There were several instances where I felt unsafe for children at Oakridge and recently had to withdraw my son because a child in his class repeatedly touched my son in his private parts without any repercussions. The administration team is laughable. The principal wouldnt even come into a meeting to address the sexual abuse that was taking place at HER school. Shame on her. I have called CPS and the superintendent, but I would steer clear of this school.

Our experience here has been truly amazing! As parents of a first and third grader, we are grateful to be part of such a supportive and welcoming community. The teachers are dedicated and communicative. We have a close relationship with them, working together to reinforce learning at home and supporting our children with their homework and academic progress.

Our children, whose first language is not English, have made incredible progress in just six months, thanks to the outstanding support and encouragement from the entire staff.

We believe that parental involvement is key to a childs success, and volunteering at the school has allowed us to build strong connections with other families, creating a wonderful sense of community. While no school is perfect, we truly feel this one is the right place for our children to learn, grow, and thrive!

i graduated from this school a few years ago, and there was so much that happend that was wrong. they dont deal with discrimination, bullying or racism. i went to this school from k-5 and multiple teachers left. it was good until covid happened. i wouldnt recomend this school. the only time i felt at ease was in extended day which the service there was so perfect for a child. (sorry for my horrible grammar, spelling and punation). ALSO THIS IS A NO HOMEWORK SCHOOL NOR GRADES.

My family and I had the most awful experience at Oak Ridge Elementary.
Though we left a little over a year ago: I experienced constant conflicts with the staff, there were multiple teacher changes during the year, most of whom English was not their primary language. And, now that Im attending a good public school in another district, my child was almost required to be held back a grade due to a serious lack of skills and inability to perform at appropriate grade level.
There is nothing positive that I have to say about the school, I would recommend that if youre in this district that you seek private education because your student will be left behind if they are forced to go to this school.

Oakridge staff and principal are great. They love the children and work hard for our children. Overall many parents love this school. This place and the staff. The principal promotes equity and inclusion in all practices within the school. I truly appreciate my child being seen and heard.

Would be a 4 star review but taking away a star for the awful pick up and drop off procedures. Super inconvenient for parents in both instances. As a former teacher there are far better ways to change this. The teachers my kids have had are awesome. They have multiple ways for parents to be involved. 0/10 for the bus drivers, theyre rude, will run you over or fuss you out. Ive personally seen this happen.

I could not be happier with this school. I have three boys attending Oakridge, and we have only been there a year, but this school has completely impressed me. The teachers, counselors, and principal truly care about the kids. They listen, they are responsive, and they are trying to meet the needs of every kid. In particular, the teachers and staff involved in the special education program have been phenomenal. The principal cares deeply about the kids and does not hesitate to get involved when needed. She personally has addressed issues such as bullying. I cant say enough about this principal snd this school.

This review is based on 1 year of Kindergarten (in person) and half a year of distance education.

Our year of Kindergarten was excellent, our child had no complaints about going to school, he learned a lot of site words, basic reading and math. His social skills really blossomed as well. Learned many positive lessons about getting along, following directions (using appropriate voice level, etc. He loved the after school activities as well, all of the counselors seemed really nice.

The distance learning was a struggle for everyone; fortunately we moved to an area where classes resumed. I would love to have my child back in Oakridge for in-person classes.

The principal never appeared to be fully aware of what was going on. At times she would promise one thing, but the staff clearly hadnt gotten the word. She and most of the admin staff seem overwhelmed on the best of days, and so completely unprepared for the pandemic, during which Arlington Public Schools delivered the worst performance among any of the local districts - even the superintendent apologized for it at a board meeting.

The school has a no-homework policy, which would be fine, had there been better communication between our teacher and home. We were issued a folder at the beginning of the year for communications - there was literally never anything in it.

We are a military family and we move often; our child typically forms a strong relationship with his teacher; not so at Oakridge. He was one of five non-minority children in a class of 23, and at parent-teacher conferences she would just tell us If know I dont have to worry about your son. Im not sure he ever got much attention.

A+++ I am surprised great schools didnt give this school a higher rating as we have been very happy here. My daughter reads and does math well above grade level. She has blossomed from a shy and timid child to a confident and friendly young lady. She has had opportunities to participate in choir, band, swimming, book clubs and much more. She has made many great memories at Oakridge and we will miss Dr. Wright and all of the teachers and staff as she is now going into middle school. Thank you Oakridge, for the wonderful job and love you have to our family.

Give Oakridge credit: Academic studies have shown that homework does not help elementary school kids learn. So, there is no homework! That means our daughter can read on her own at home, go on play dates, or do her extra-curricular activities, such as music and sports. Perfect.

Oakridge could use some new leadership - the principal has been there awhile and her methods I think are not as effective as they could be. The population of Oakridge had changed over the past few years and she has not adjusted - just because the 2 assistant principals are diverse do not mean any diversity within the school is being valued or factored.

Oakridge is a good elementary school primarily due to the dedicated teachers. The school administration still continues to over emphasize the needs of the affluent homeowners and PTA leaders in detriment of the very valuable influx of international families. Oakridge could use some new leadership - the principal has been there too long and her methods I think are not as effective as they could be. The population and needs of Oakridge has changed over the past few years and she has not adjusted. I think without a hard look in the mirror and better representation of the entire Oakridge population in the PTA and school programming, the ability of this school to be rated highly will continue to decline - just look at those testing scores among the lower income and more diverse students!

I agree that useless math sheets are unneeded, but Arlington County's decision to eliminate required homework sets a poor precedence for developing strong reading and writing skills for elementary school students to take into middle and high school. Additionally the policy creates unneeded tension between parents and students.

The community and diversity in Oakridge is great. While the academics are decent depending on your teacher, the extra activities such as art, music, PE, language and science are really great and make the students really well rounded. The no homework policy while good on paper, is not great for the parents because we have no idea how or what the child is doing all year long. The big problem I have with the school has been the principle. While I do think principles have a very hard job, this one is 100 percent a dictator who does not work well with parents, or the PTA who provides so much for the teacher and students. I also don't think she supports her teachers and staff very well. If you happen to have a bullying problem with your child, she would rather you leave the school to get rid of the problem. She is very also condescending to parents which is just tough to take.

Overall experience has been very positive. My daughter loves her teachers. No homework policy was a courageous step that pays off. Almost every night, my daughter wants to practice what she learned that day. Effectively doing homework without the stress of completing an assignment or a deadline. This makes learning fun and exciting for her. I wish it had been the same for me when I was a boy. School communication could be better. Sometimes follow through from admin on concerns doesnt always happen. Every once in a while well have an issue with a classmate misbehaving. For the most part, its handled well. Some of the kids in Extended Day can be a little rough (some) but, overall, OES is one of your better schools. My wife and I are very happy that our daughter says she enjoys school
and teaches us what she learned that day.

My two children (8 and 10) have been attending Oakridge for almost three years now. The teachers for the most part are great and truly care about their students. Both of my kids loved their 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Burgin and a few others like Mrs. Fishbein and Mr. Papola. However there is a general lack of discipline at the school that traces back to the principal. She gets a lot of publicity but rarely enforces any consequences on kids that bully! High turnover of faculty every year and treats her close friends on staff much better than others. Stay away if you have options.

My child was at Oakridge for 2 years- Kindergarten and 1st grade. While we had a wonderful experience in Kindergarten, I cannot say the same for 1st grade. First, my child was singled out since day 1 in first grade. I received phone calls several times a week because his teacher didn't want to deal with him. Secondly, I was told that my child needed special education classes because of a supposed learning disability (which is false). Third, I was in a 3 week transition of moving apartments within the school district and the principal, (whom is a total joke) asked me to remove my child IMMEDIATELY from school because we were not meeting housing requirements during that transition. She gave us 1 day notice on a FRIDAY! Who in the world does that? She made me take my child out mid-year, away from his friends and his learning environment. I am so disgusted in the way my son was treated that I should've made it a news story. I was so disappointed that I never want to send him to that school again. He's been at his new school for 2 months now and is THRIVING. I have not been told once that he needed special education classes or has a learning disability. His new teacher absolutely ADORES him,

Overall, the parents at Oakridge are very nice and well involved with the PTA, the majority of teachers are good, but the principal needs to be evaluated immediately and possibly removed. She's very condescending and does not seem to truly care about providing an excellent education experience.

My two daughters have been attending this school going on three years now, and while the teachers have been great, I cannot say the same for the administration. During the first three months my youngest daughter had a difficult time in kindergarten, not because of adjustment to school, it was because she was being bullied. On four separate occasions within the first three months of school my daughter had an object thrown at her which caused a scratch on her face, she was slapped in the face by the straps on the other student's backpack, pushed which made her fall over and most horrifically; the other student stood behind her and chocked her with his arms. The teacher sent the child to the principle's office and when I confronted the staff I was not told any disciplinary actions that would happen to the boy. Instead it was determined that my daughter had to move her table in class and there would be extra supervision on the other boy while at school. The Principle even suggest I move my daughter from the class. She is out of touch, in my opinion under qualified to deal bullying situations. While the rest of the school year did improve for my daughter, after I taught her to defend herself and with countless meetings with the teacher to ensure my daughter was in a positive school environment, I truly felt the principle was not as attentive to such severe issues in her school. My daughter was not the only child in that class to be bullied by the same child, and throughout the year the teacher's aid had to hold this boys hand and stand next to him at all times keeping an extra eye on him. Sad, that additional measures were not taken to ensure all children were safe and comfortable in a school environment.

However, the teachers are great, I jsut wish the administration would have acted much differently in a the case with my daughter being bullied.

This school is in Arlington County, which means it has a ton of money being poured into it and it has a stellar reputation. You'd think this school would be incredible. It's far from it. I had my child there for 3 years while living in Arlington and I couldn't be more disappointed in this place. The principal is a total joke, the teachers are lazy and can't grade your child's school work accurately (parents, get ready to add the job title "teacher" to your resume because the teachers here don't teach), and there is absolutely NO discipline in any way for the kids who are being mean/bullying. Like I stated above, the principal is a joke and literally does nothing to help your child succeed unless you're a millionaire and kissing up to her, like many of the moms do.

Oakridge is a great school, I have two children, one who went through Oakridge k-5 and is now in Middle school. She was very well prepared for the higher level math as well as juggling taking 7 classes. My younger child loves Oakridge and all her friends. Each year she starts the year wishing she could stick with her beloved teacher from the year before but a month or two in she has a new favorite teacher. Can't say enough good things about the teachers at the school. The PTA is active and contribute greatly to the school hosting many events and a big school carnival every year. With a fair number of military and diplomatic families moving in and out each year, there is terrific cultural diversity and a very welcoming environment.

Well, my kids transferred from another Arlington County Public elementary school within the last year. Unlike the other school that embraced us from day 1 until the time we left and afterwards for some administrative issues (to include the principal and VP), we unfortunately have had just the opposite experience here. Such a breath of fresh air, diversity of staff and students in Arlington is tough to come by, Oakridge is by far the best school we have been involoved with. While there are one or two "top of the ridge" parents who are upset about not recieving special treatment from the principal, from our perspective they were just upset that all the "poor" kids went to "their" school, even telling some that their children should have been forced to attend other schools. Other than that the community as a whole has embraced us from the start. The PTA always puts on great family friendly events that are well attended by staff.

LOVE, love, love Oakridge Elementary. Our kids are not only learning they are having fun with so many after school activities and good field trips. We're lucky since we have neighbors who walk their kids to schools so ours sometimes join them. Summer school/camp is also offered. The school is in a quiet neighborhood. Teachers have been spectacular (Ms. Burgin, Ms. Guevara, Ms. Dickerson, Ms. Flannigan and her assistant Ms. Bayne): you can tell they love being there. Ms. Burgin has a goldfish that my son's class got to watch grow up. The annual Science Fair is awesome. Always enjoy the friendly welcome from the Principal, Ms. Wright at every event. The annual "Oakridge Spring Fling" is also a blast. Academics are good - there are a lot of activities, parks and libraries around Arlington as well to keep kids occupied.

This is a great neighborhood school. Both of our kids have had fantastic teachers who are involved and responsive. There are good after-school activities, the neighborhood is safe (our kids walk to school or take the bus as we're about a mile away) and the school is nicely tucked in the neighborhood away from the main roads. We were new to this area, absolutely love our neighbors, and like being close to the school, library, and many parks including the new Long Bridge Park! Our kids are thriving here.

Parental involvement and Teachers are great. Principal is awful...Dr. Wright divides and conquers both staff and parents. Vice-Principal just resigned due to disagreement (cover story is for illness). Some parents fear retribution on their children and will not confront her; many teachers feel the same way. Dr. Wright would best serve Oakridge by leaving it.

Amazing school in S. Arlington. My son has been here for 4 years. Every teacher he's had has been engaged, positive, and communicates regularly with us about his progress. From the principal to the teachers and staff to the parents and kids - this is a wonderful, safe neighborhood school with an active PTA, teachers who like their jobs, and kids who walk and bus to school together. I would not recommend this school, for the administration there. The teachers, if you get a great one, are amazing and they do seem to really care about the kids and try their best within the constraints placed on them by the admin and the county/state. I've seen poorer district schools run better than this school. There is no running allowed in PE, only skipping, fast walking or galloping. There are NO school celebrations allowed- because of a few exuberant parents and an overreacting principal, which they tried to claim was related to food allergies(but wasn't), which was made worse by the lack of clear and concise communication from the school. If you are new to the neighborhood, forget about fitting in-the PTA won't help you, nor will your neighbors. There is an obvious snob factor involved between those who have lived here their entire lives and those who haven't. A parent was ripped to shreds at a school meeting last night because she bravely disagreed with the party line. There are much better run schools in Arlington. Choose wisely.

This is our first year at Oakridge. We were apprehensive with the last minute move and concerned that our daughter would have a difficult transition to a new school. We couldn't be more pleased! Ms. Are is a wonderful veteran teacher who truly enjoys her job and loves my daughter. We are so lucky to have her as our first grade teacher. She replies to our emails and notes within hours and she is so welcoming! We are very impressed with the resources available to ALL students not just students who need remediation or who are labeled gifted. The only issue we have is with the school's principal and vice principal who don't seem to know what is going on in the classrooms or with the students. It seems like the school test scores have continually declined since they became the leaders of the school. Nevertheless, I would STILL recommend anyone to enroll their child at Oakridge. The teachers are hardworking and dedicated to our children. I see that at the PTA meetings.

My twin daughters are in kindergarten with Ms. Garcia and Ms. Walker. I loved that we were able to decide whether my kids were in the same class. We opted to separate them. While this made the transition harder for my girls, their respective teachers were SO supportive. Both kids love their respective teachers and it's clear that their experiences at school have faciltated their emotional and intellectual growth. I feel fortunate to have had such a positive initial experience.

My son in Kindergarten and this is his first year in public school, we had our fist PT meet and we are pleased with the support my son is getting from Mr. McConnell. He and Ms. Bayne are very much liked by my son and developed great understanding skills in the first quarter. He is able to develop great interest towards reading and enjoying his school.

I am very happy to be working with such fabulous staff and students at Oakridge. The teachers and administration are dedicated to high expectations and achievement for all students. Students come from many different backgrounds and are engaged in learning every day at Oakridge.

Today was my daughter's first day. We attended orientation and met her teacher to allay her fears of attending a new school. Then today she was turned away by that teacher and told she had been moved to another classroom, I did not even know this had happened until after school. The principal said that she had been assigned to the brand new (hired 1 day after orientation) teacher all along.Then her forms packet came home with original teacher's name on it. You can't trust a word that comes out the mouth of the leader of this school which makes me worry about the integrity of the entire place. Not to mention, they had NO concern for my child's needs or confort level her first day at a new school.

2011-2012 As a US Military family, this was my daughter's 6th school building in 4 school districts for 5th grade and my son's 4th school building in 3 school districts for 3d grade. We LOVED Oakridge!!! Excellent education and very welcoming to the military. Dr. Wright is a wonderful principal and very involved with the students! The teachers and staff are excellent! Mr. Nelson(5) and Mrs. Treadwell(3) were exceptional teachers who cared about each of their students and met their needs individually. They are very welcoming to parents helping out and volunteering. It is truly an International School with over 50 countries from around the world represented--a lot are children from International Military familiies whose parents are going to the National Defense University for the year.
