Horrible school. Do not send your child here. I used to go here and the blatant targeting of students by teachers is ridiculous. You can literally shoot something in a trash can and miss, and the teacher will think you were throwing it at her and give you in school detention (this actually happened). The school itself is in terrible condition. Food festers within unoccupied lockers. Trash also fills the locker houses on the floor, no one bothers to clean it up. This school won't be rebuilt for another 10 years. So, don't send your child here until its been remodeled.

I am a student at Hidden Valley. This school is terrible. I have experienced bullies, racism, and sexist boys. I am a plus sized girl and I get fat shamed on the daily. This school is a terrible environment and frankly bad for my mental health. Also the bathrooms have profane language and some.. interesting drawings in there. The teachers overwork us and the school is a MESS. Get your school fixed, or you might lose a few students.

Bullying is rampant. The responsible adults are absent from every interaction my daughter has with peers. The counselors are not helpful. The student culture is out of control, reports of blatant sexist behavior, racism, and cruelty. It's amazing a student hasn't suicided or become violent on site.
This administration refuses to get ahead of the culture to influence it into something we would want our future generations to be a part of. They are reactive an ineffective, and largely ignorant by choice.
Looking at private school options. Public education has become singularly focused on SOL scores and is grooming predators and sociopaths.

The administration is horrible. The majority of the counselors are not helpful at all. The principal "Mike" is unprofessional, ignorant, and bias. I wish that we still lived in Salem, so that our children could attend the schools there. This school is the worst, and the people running it need to rethink about their job of choice. They are despicable.

I'm a student at HVMS and the teachers are absolutely great at teaching and they're very nice and helpful. Most of the people are super nice and are always there for you. There are many great classes to choose from that aren't in other schools, such as photography, art, crafts, keyboarding, foreign languages, and many other subjects. Although, some students happen to be very mean, by that I mean judgemental! If you have a mental disorder, you're most likely going to be bullied and made fun of. It's the sad truth. Even the teachers don't pay attention to the bullying in this school!! Just to let you know, this school is known as the "rich-kid" school, so almost everyone wears brand name clothing. I think this school is pretty okay, it's just not the best one. I've been to schools nearby and they're better, but that's my opinion. So, basically, the education is superb, yet some people are judgemental.

HVMS shares the same name as a nearby country club causing many to mistakenly stereotype it's students. The truth is that HVMS students come from diverse backgrounds from both ends of the economic spectrum, with most reflecting the middle class majority of Roanoke County. The teachers and administration truly care about each student's well being and success. Their commitment to students's needs and academic excellence has twice earned HVMS the distinction of being named a Virginia School to Watch. No school is perfect, but HVMS teachers care about doing a good job and the leadership has successfully created a culture of learning and high expectations for all. This school is truly special!

It does not get any better than Hidden Valley Middle! I have read plenty of positive reviews here of schools where low expectations, teacher laziness, and administrative intimidation prevail. It seems the misinformed opinions of a few vocal folks can skew a school's rating. Over the past few years Hidden Valley Middle has gone from good to GREAT in part because changing demographics have made the staff step up its game and sincerely work hard to meet the needs of every child. Middle school can be a rough time if life but this school tries hard to help kids through.

I think this school is very relaxed in some ways, but VERY STRICT in others. There are two policemen at Hidden Valley, and one comes every now and then with a dog to sniff lockers for drugs. And the students are vile! A family member of mine has been bullied constantly when she was in 6th grade. There are uncountable fights which happen almost on a daily basis. When my eldest family member first came to Hidden Valley Middle, the school was very good. It has rapidly gone down-hill, and now since I have been here I can say that it is really not a very good school at all. Just last Friday there were two fist-punching fights in the eigth-grade hallway. I would not say that this school is unsafe, but I would say, and I am, that it is not a good school to send a kid to. The kids who go there view you exactly as how you appear to be and are very judgmental, and drama and making-fun-of-poeple is apart of everyday school life here at Hidden Valley Middle.

THis school is not for students who has disabilities. If your child is non-white, low income, low IQ, they will NOT be treated fairly. IF they are good in sports none of that applies. I am looking to move to a new school district. Going to the school board hasnt really helped.
