Our experience at this school is nothing short of magical. The caring teachers, small and supportive community, the attention to creative development and kindness all combine to create an ideal learning environment.

Our family has been part of Pinecrest's community for over a decade. Our older son attended Pinecrest from 1st through 6th grade, and our younger son has been there since preschool and is now entering 5th grade. This school and community has played a vibrant role in both of their lives socially emotionally and academically.

Pinecrest is unique (in our opinion) due to its emphasis on community. It's a smaller school compared to the big name private schools in the NOVA/DC Metro area, but the environment is warm and welcoming. The teachers really care and know the students as learners and as individuals and they go out of their way to support and engage them. The faculty is positive and communicative, and they get to know the kids well.

Class sizes are small, which allows for a high degree of individual attention. The facilities are smaller than other schools in the area, but they are well-maintained and modern/updated. The charm of the campus adds to the school’s character, and care has been taken to ensure spaces are inviting and functional.

The Head of School is approachable, and deeply involved in the school community. He is a newer hire who replaced a long-serving and much-loved head of school, and he has stepped into the role with confidence and care. He is an innovative thinker and seems to know every student by name and takes the time to engage with families. His responsiveness and leadership have been especially valuable in recent years as the school has added more students and increased after school learning opportunities.

Pinecrest remained open for in-person studies during the pandemic and handled this difficult time with thoughtfulness and grace. Since then, it has continued to grow in size, spirit and stability. It truly feels like a school on the rise.

Our family is grateful for the part that Pinecrest has played in our children’s lives and would strongly recommend it to families looking for a nurturing, close-knit academic community.

We have been a Pinecrest family for 5 years, starting with kindergarten. My kids love going to school each day and feel safe, listened to, and free to express themselves. I see their confidence growing each day. The best part about Pinecrest is the amazing teachers, dedicated staff, and small classes. It is not a school for everyone (there are no busses or cafeteria) but it is the "right size" for early childhood through elementary school. In some ways, it has the feel of a one room schoolhouse, although there are separate buildings for the upper and lower years. The classes are not mixed ages like Montessori, but sometimes grades 4-5 or 5-6 are combined, depending on enrollment. Class sizes are about half the size of public school, or smaller. The older kids are "big buddies" to the younger students and become friends and mentors. It is so sweet! Unlike some private schools, it is not religious or snobbish. Everyone is very genuine and down-to-earth. The school is pretty diverse. Although there is no foreign language instruction, they explore multicultural themes each month. The teachers and staff encourage empathy, community service (K-Kids meets afterschool and the kids choose service projects), and socio-emotional learning. A highlight of this year was the performance/acting special, which met twice a week and culminated in a school-wide performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Our experience at Pinecrest School so far has been everything we hoped for. When searching for a school for my kids, I wanted to find a supportive environment that would not only foster academic growth, but directly and consistently focus on the development of social-emotional skills as well. This has made Pinecrest a great fit for our family.
Pinecrest’s genuine appreciation for its families is evident, as is the school’s commitment to inclusion. Every child at Pinecrest is seen, heard, and valued. This gives them room to grow into confident, clear communicators who are curious and mindful of the world around them, and who believe that they can be change-makers.
It’s truly a gift to know that in addition to preparing my kids for the academic world beyond Pinecrest, the teachers and staff are dedicated to fostering their students’ curiosity, creativity, sense of self and social responsibility.

My daughters have attended Pinecrest for three years. If we had not moved, they would have remained at the school through completion. Pinecrest is a great school. The Administration and teachers are caring, smart, consistent and truly focus on the students educational, emotional, and developmental health. They do a great job of balancing rigor with fun, so students remain engaged and enthused. The small class size enables teachers to "dig deeper" and tailor education for each student. They also do an exceptional job in communicating with parents through continuous both formal and informal communications. In addition to an outstanding and balanced curriculum, Pinecrest also offers useful and helpful after-school and alternate activities, such as field trips, annual field events, movie nights, annually holiday music event (Kids were fantastic this year, thanks to an amazing music teacher!), STEM-related after school volunteer options, and other events. Their summer camp program is fantastic and fun, and our girls have engaged it all three summers. It's nice that alumni of the school volunteer and work at these camps, providing a sense of legacy. I highly recommend parents looking for a private school environment that is compassionate, considerate, and offers smaller class size and tailored education to the specific needs of their children to consider Pinecrest. We have had nothing but an exceptional experience with the school.

We feel very lucky to be part of the Pinecrest School family. Our son is currently a 5th grader who moved from the public school system. This is a small and intimate school where all ages mix in an inclusive environment with exceptional pastoral care. Our son has developed ahead of his age group in all areas and their attention to all round development is weaved into everyday curriculum activities so that the children are confident young people. Most impressive has been the graduated transition between grades that sets realistic expectations and just the right about of accountability as the children grow. The size of the school may make people think that it would lack opportunities and challenge. That could not be further from the truth! The inventiveness, creativity and dedication of the staff (who know every child) delivers an outstanding program both in and out of the classroom; after school activities, field trips, whole school activities and plenty of outdoor and physical running around time!

Without reservation I give the school 5/5 in all areas. If you ask my son what's is best about Pinecrest - he says 'the teachers'.

I can't speak highly enough of this school. My son started Preschool here at just 2 years old (November birthday), and to have him in such a wonderful classroom setting with enrichment classes that young is amazing. He's now in his 3rd year of Preschool, and I have no doubt that he will be better equipped than most for kindergarten. We have adored all three teachers and staff, and have gotten to know them on a personal level. Parents have multiple opportunities to get involved - from park gatherings, movie nights, weekly assemblies, class parties, parades, etc - I have a great understanding of what goes on during class time from hands on experience. The staff is exceptional, motivating the students and parents to be involved in their educational experience.

Our family could not be more pleased with the education and support Pinecrest offers. This is truly a community and our daughter has learned more in Kindergarten (spelling, reading, math – and routinely comes home eager to share her latest knowledge – i.e., “the water cycle”). She is excited to go to school each day, enjoys the special program that Pinecrest offers each week (yoga, mindfulness, music - and plenty of outdoor adventures and fresh air). The teachers and entire staff are nurturing, supportive, and provide plenty of communication and reminders each week.
We also utilize the before and after care – which is such a blessing for working parents that are back to the office after Covid!

The two years our son has spent at Pinecrest have been integral in his development. The individualized whole-child focus has been exactly what he needed moving through Kindergarten and 1st grade. Great teachers, amazing support from the administration, and a healthy environment that really does nurture a love for learning. It's been worth every penny and we look forward to the years to come.

I am so happy my daughter is learning and growing in a school surrounded by genuine care, love, and support from extraordinary staff. Pinecrest is family and community at the finest and I highly recommend this school for your child.

The staff and teachers feel and act like family at Pinecrest. We started sending our daughter here because she was having school anxiety at her local public school and the classes were so big that she was overwhelmed. We were anxious at first about changing her environment - new friends, new teachers - but we are so glad that we did. Everyone at Pinecrest is so supportive. Not only are the class sizes smaller so the teachers have more time for one-on-one, but so many of the adults outside of the classroom have been there to support too. Our daughter's teacher is also amazing. She builds her students' interests into the lessons she teaches, and she has really nurtured our daughter's passion for the natural sciences and reading. Our daughter still has anxiety but she is in a much more supportive place and we feel like she is building the skills she needs to manage her stress and still be successful in school.

Pinecrest is a wonderful school and is a hidden gem in the area. The school promotes the idea of creating a thriving and positive community amongst its student body, staff, faculty and parents... and in my experience of having sent two of my children there, they really are successful in doing so. The class sizes are small, which has been a huge benefit to both of our children, but especially our older child who tends to get lost in larger class environments. The principal and staff know our children by name, and the teachers create a nurturing and stable environment for learning.
Pinecrest promotes the practice of mindfulness during the school activities. During our children's time there, they have become focused and engaged students. The principal’s leadership and communication is exceptional and she and the entire staff work together very well to create an open-hearted, inclusive and supportive atmosphere.

Pinecrest is an amazing school and an incredible community. Both of our children have attended Pinecrest since they were 3-year old preschoolers, and our oldest will be a sixth grader for the 2022-23 school year. Over the past eight years, we have been blown away by the curriculum, the teachers and staff and the administration. But even more impressive than academics is Pinecrest's ability to focus on and nurture the development of the whole child. During their time at Pinecrest, our children have thrived academically, but have also become more self-confident and self-assured thanks to the dedicated administration, teachers and staff, who are always engaged and accessible. We have not once questioned our decision to send our kids to Pinecrest, and we are incredibly grateful that we have found this school and become a part of its wonderful community.

My three boys have had the gift that is a Pinecrest education during their elementary school years. One is now off to college, one is a rising high school junior, and one is still marinating in the magic of Pinecrest School as a rising 4th grader. Our time as part of the Pinecrest School community has spanned 15 years and one pandemic. The consistent quality approach to education is unfathomable. This school does not stray from its mission. What I love the most about Pinecrest School is that I know that my kids received the best academic education possible in the best social environment possible. They are 100% prepared academically and show up in life with quiet confidence rooted in honesty, integrity, and kindness. #ThisIsCommunity #ThisIsPinecrestSchool

Pinecrest has never failed to provide the kind of environment that has helped our kids learn and grow. We have one son now in high school and he has excelled thanks to the great foundation he built at Pinecrest. From the head of school to the teachers to the other support staff, it's always been obvious that the type priority was the students.
It was never more obvious than during the height of COVID when a variety of safeguards were put in place that supported a positive learning experience for the kids and kept them safe.
The academics are excellent but the school does more than that. It's place where the social and emotion development is as important as the academic. I see it in my kids and their Pinecrest friends -- caring, kind, independent. You would think that a small private school would be conducive to a helicopter parent type of situation but that is not the case. My sons have learned to advocate for themselves and think for themselves. There a multiple activities that build confidence and self-esteem such as the monthly class presentations that each student gives.
For parents, there also are opportunities to connect and get involved.
The school has been a big part of our family and we are extremely grateful to be part of the Pinecrest community.

Pinecrest is an absolutely amazing school! We found Pinecrest for our son in the fall of 2020 because they were able to offer safe, in-person instruction for all students. We are in our second year at the school and can't say enough about what a great community school this is. The Head of School, admin staff, teachers, and enrichment teachers are some of the kindest, warmest people we have ever met. Each child is appreciated for his/her individuality and are supported both academically and emotionally. Class sizes are small and intimate. The school has a weekly communication cadence that is very detailed and helpful. The teachers are easy communicate with and are very responsive to questions/concerns. From an academic standpoint, our son is thriving. We really appreciate the well-balanced approach Pinecrest provides to academics. Lessons are often held outside and STEAM is a huge part of the student's curriculum. We highly recommend Pinecrest!!

Pinecrest is an amazing school! We moved our daughter here for first grade last year as we wanted a smaller and safer environment during COVID. We love the whole child approach of the school and that in addition to traditional subjects, she spends time doing STEAM, yoga and mindfulness. The leadership at Pinecrest is phenomenal and we can always count on Ms. McDermott and the Board to be accessible, communicate frequently, and have the kids' best interest at heart. This year they've added a Creative Movement class that my now 2nd grader loves. The sense of community at Pinecrest is great and even though they no longer have in-person family events, we are happy to Zoom with other families while doing Pinecrest Bingo or Trivia. We highly recommend this school!

We made the decision to move our two children to Pinecrest this fall and couldn't be happier. Leadership and communication are excellent and we've found the teachers to be both competent and compassionate. Instead of staring at iPads all day, our little ones are thriving and enjoying learning in a positive environment with small class sizes. As a smaller school, Pinecrest has a community feel and delivers an outstanding education at a reasonable cost compared to the large, so called 'elite' private schools in the area. It was a difficult decision to move our children out of a highly rated public school district but Pinecrest has exceeded our expectations.

I have two children at Pinecrest and am so pleased with our experience at this school From the teachers to the administration to the other families, it is such a wonderful community. During the current environment, (a global pandemic!), I felt compelled to write this review. I have been so impressed with the effectiveness of the school during this time (and all of the time really, but especially now). The kids have been engaged since Day 1 of the "new normal" and have had daily connection points with teachers, friends, and even PE, STEAM and music. The kids are engaged and learning in a creative and challenging matter, yet in the most realistic manner possible, making it feel doable for families. The teachers fondness for the students is obvious in every video session. It makes me so happy that my kids have these relationships with their teachers. The administration supports the teachers, kids, and even the parents. I am just really impressed with the quality of education at this school, and the attention paid to instilling curiosity, kindness, creativity, and individualism into the students.

We have had an overwhelmingly positive experience at Pinecrest from the community to the opportunities offered for our child. The school just went through their most recent reaccreditation process and received a score of 349/400 - this score is much higher than the average (280) given by the accrediting body (Advance Ed) and speaks to the high level of social emotional and academic education that Pinecrest offers. If you are looking for a student-first, nurturing and supportive educational experience for your child, you have found it :)

The entire school practices mindfulness, and the teachers reinforce a growth mindset – both of which have greatly benefited my daughter. Everyone demonstrates respect and caring for each other. Older students are friends with the younger students, and they all help each other.

Posted: April 15, 2019

The head of school is very effective. She communicates clearly and effectively. She demonstrates care for all the students, and always has time for the parents.

Posted: April 15, 2019

Students are not required to sit at their desks all day. Rather, they are encouraged to find where they work best, whether that's in a comfy chair, at a table, in a different spot in the room. The teachers work with them to help them. In my daughter's class, the students had rubberbands on the bottom of their chair that they could bounce their feet on if they were fidgety; this helped them focus. The teachers provide individualized attention and help each student with his or her challenges and strengths.

Posted: April 15, 2019

The teachers and staff are highly encouraging of everyone respecting each other. They are quick to address any issues of disrespect. I have never seen or heard of any instances of bullying.

The teachers are strong in their skills and provide individualized attention. If my daughter struggles with confidence or tackling a new task, her teachers work with her and help her as an individual, giving caring support while encouraging persistence.

Pinecrest is an incredible school with fantastic teachers and staff. My daughter is thriving here. It’s not just the academics – it’s how the school cares about each individual student. One morning, I was dropping my daughter off for before care and as we were walking in, one of the teachers (not my daughter’s teacher) was also walking in. My daughter started running and told the teacher that she was racing her (even though my daughter had a head start). And without missing a beat, that teacher also started running. They then had a nice banter about my daughter’s sparkly, special occasion shoes that we allow her to wear on non-PE days. I loved watching the interaction between them. I regularly see similar interactions between my daughter and other teachers and staff. They aren't even her teachers, but my daughter clearly feels comfortable and feels she can playfully engage with them without fear of rejection. I have watched this since our daughter was in preschool. I don't know that I have any memories of teachers engaging with me like that when I was a child – I definitely have memories of stern lectures and of disappointing my teachers with sloppy penmanship, so maybe that's why I feel pleasantly surprised to see these types of interactions.

It just really means a lot to me to see such care and respect for my daughter. She isn't just a child and they aren't just authority figures. It really is truly community with mutual respect and care. I appreciate that when I drop my daughter off, I know that she is happy, safe and flourishing and loved. This will all make her into a strong, confident young lady. My biggest desire for my daughter is for her to truly know that regardless of anything she does or accomplishes, she is valued and loved for who she is just the way she is. The teachers and staff show her this daily.

I really appreciate his teacher Ms Ferrier who I feel has wisdom in her approach to teaching. My son loves to play with his friends and toys but this year he has also been grasping what he is taught in the class. One afternoon under the care of Ms Marble, I walked in to pick up my son and I saw a group of 5-6kids sitting and discussing a book. I think they were taking about the story based on the pictures. I was so impressed.

Posted: December 20, 2018

I am totally satisfied with my son’s character development. He is in the unlimited aftercare with Ms Marble who teaches him proper manners. He impresses me when he says excuse me when he burps, please and thank you when asking for things. I know he learned that at school. He immediately cleans up after he spills.

Ms McDermott is one of the most dedicated principle I have ever met. She keeps parents up to date on current events and school activities. She sends out information on free lectures in the community that I have attended and found very useful.

My son spends his afternoon on some days playing with older grade boys and that is his most favorite part of the school day. He complains if I pick him up early. He had not experienced any bullying and has not talked about anyone being bullied.

It is a hidden gem in Annandale. I highly recommend this school for anyone. As a minority parent, I feel lucky to find a school that my son feels like he belongs.

Posted: December 20, 2018

My son has been attending Pinecrest for two years in preschool. He doesn’t get homework but the teacher sends home alphabets that they have been working on that a parent can review if needed.

Ms. McDermott leads by example and is a strong advocate for encouraging students to see their own gifts, contribute to their own educational process, and seeing the joy in contributing to our greater community.

Posted: August 22, 2018

Both the head of school and teachers work together with parents to determine how best to support each individual child.

Posted: August 22, 2018

I have never seen any bullying at the school. I think the is primarily due to the fact that the students support each other and are encouraged to develop strong social-emotional skills and empathy for others.

Posted: August 22, 2018

Pinecrest provides its students with a strong sense of self in relation to their academics, their peer interactions, and the broader community. My child is encouraged to growth and thrive, but still be himself as he explores what that means on a daily basis. We love seeing how his classmates truly support one another and even in a young grade apologize if their inadvertently say something that stings. This not only comes from home, but how the students are taught to think of others in addition to themselves.

Posted: August 22, 2018

Younger grades have very little homework because most of the instruction is effectively done at school. Only when additional support is needed does homework really come home.

As indicated above, the school's motto is "This is community" because there is a strong emphasis on social-emotional development, care and concern for your school and greater community, and respect for each other.

Pinecrest is dedicated not only to classroom learning, but also to providing each child with a positive social and emotional environment --simply put, they focus on the whole child.

Posted: June 15, 2018

Given the school's size, the head of school knows each and every child. Like the teachers, she is very accessible and communicates effectively with the community.

Very reasonable guidelines are in place that increase in time for older grades. The focus is on learning in the classroom so homework is meant to reinforce what's learned there instead of introducing new material. Most days there is no homework, except maybe to read something.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Very engaged. Class sizes are kept small so teachers can better track how each student progresses through the year. I have found them very approachable and anxious to partner with parents to make sure each child is challenged and gets what they need.

Posted: May 16, 2018

The kids are taught to respect each other, to work together on academic assignments and during free time. They are given plenty of opportunities to share their interests with peers and learn from one another. There's also a great community service organization run by the students associated with Kiwanis.

Posted: May 16, 2018

School is run very efficiently. Parents are kept informed of what's happening and of opportunities to volunteer. The Head of School not only knows every child but also how each is doing and what they are capable of achieving.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Preschoolers are mostly kept separate from K – 6 (except in all-school assemblies), but otherwise the kids are encouraged to work together throughout the year. They have book buddies, science and math project teams, etc. so they get to work with different kids in different settings. This fosters an environment where kids know each other and are not likely to be unkind. Class sizes are small and teachers are never far away so if anything does happen that needs attention they're right there to address.

My oldest son graduated from Pinecrest two years ago and went on to a public middle school. He was well prepared academically, earning all As in all honors classes because of the knowledge he had going in and the work ethic and self-advocacy he had developed. He transitioned nicely from a very small class setting to a much larger school environment, where he’s thrived socially. Pinecrest gave him a strong educational foundation, encouraging his natural curiosity so it developed into a true love of learning. Pinecrest also embedded in him the belief that school is a good, safe place where he can take ownership of his own growth; because of the positive early schooling experience he has the expectation that all educational institution serve this purpose. He actually wants to be in school, which makes it much easier for him to be an active participant and net positive results.

Our younger child has been at Pinecrest since preschool and will also be headed to middle school soon. Pinecrest has not only been wonderful for academics but also for grooming them both into the kind of people I want them to be – kind, confident, generous, optimistic, motivated, engaged. We’ve already seen how this has benefitted our oldest after 6th grade. We have every confidence that our youngest is also well-prepared for the next phase when the time comes.

Pinecrest has been such a gift to my kids. I have seen them bloom into kind, ambitious, curious, hard-working people. They are excited to go to school every morning, and come home full of stories about things they learned. Some of my favorites this year include a 3rd grade unit exploring the physics of paper airplanes and a 1st grade unit on geography including teaching songs to help the kids remember all of the continents and oceans. The teachers are dedicated and creative, and my kids are thriving. The small community means everyone at the school knows and looks out for my kids, and it allows the school to plan fun, intimate community events.

Sending our kids to Pinecrest has been one of the best decisions we have made as a family. My children started in preschool, and we immediately became hooked, not only from an academic perspective, but because of many of the values they instill in our children – such as kindness, teamwork, creativity, work ethic, and giving them the confidence that they can accomplish even the most challenging things. The teachers are top-notch, and in our experience, they see each child as an individual and care about their academic experience, as well as their overall well-being. The Head of School is extremely involved in all aspects of the children’s overall experience, and is one of the key drivers behind Pinecrest’s tag line of “This is Community”. I have two very different children, but one thing they both have in common is their fondness for Pinecrest. They wake up genuinely happy to go to school. It is just such a great feeling watching them skip into school with a smile each day, looking forward to learning (and of course seeing all of their fun friends and teachers).

My son is in his 7th year at Pinecrest, he started in Kindergarten. We are dreading his upcoming graduation (no more Pinecrest), but are looking for a new school that will continue the nurturing and challenging environment that has helped to build his confidence and love of learning. The staff at Pinecrest has been wonderful, steering us through the application process better than we are able to do so on our own. Not only have they made all his years at Pinecrest wonderful, but they are going the extra mile to make sure we have the best possible transition to the next school. I wish I could give the school a 6th star rating.

Pinecrest school is quite an amazing school! We have three children at Pinecrest that are quite unique. and Pinecrest has figured out a way to meet each child where they are. The teachers are so creative, knowledgeable, and caring. Our children absolutely love school. We love the well-rounded curriculum for preschool and grade school. Even in preschool the kids have the opportunity to explore a variety of subjects including science, social studies, math, writing, reading, Spanish, art and physical education. I have seen it first hand, in the same classroom the teachers challenging the child that is super advanced while tailoring the same subject to a child that is behind while building self confidence. It's partly due to the small classroom size and mostly due to the quality of the teaching staff. Pinecrest is a true community school and it speaks volumes how eager the students, teachers, and staff put so much energy and effort into volunteering in the community and for those in need. We couldn't have found a more well-rounded school that fosters personal growth, embraces individuality, celebrates diversity, and excels academically.

I have nothing but good things to say about our two years at Pinecrest. Let me start with the most important thing: my two children are thriving, excited learners, and good citizens thanks to the thoughtful curriculum that Pinecrest and its amazing teachers create. There is a balance of rigorous academics, nurturing/TLC, and consideration for making 'whole people' that I love. My son's teacher last year read his lengthy occupational therapy assessment and gave him classroom strategies that aligned with the therapist's recommendations, my preschool aged daughter was given TLC and a make-shift lunch one day when emergency dental surgery prevented my husband getting her on time, and my few minor classroom concerns have been addressed quickly and thoughtfully. This would be plenty for me to rate this school highly, but the unsung other factor is the 'pay as you use it' before and after school care - you are only billed for days your child uses the before/after care program, which is an unbelievable benefit for anyone on a flexible or need-based work schedule like my family. A quick email to the administrator the day before, and there has always been a spot available for my kids.

Top 10 Reasons we love Pinecrest School: 1. My kids can't wait to get to school in the morning. 2. Small classes, never more than 15. 3. My children are receiving an AMAZING hands-on, well thought-out education. They are well prepared for AAP in public schools, or any local private school. 4. They re conversationally fluent in Spanish by 6th grade graduation. 5. They don t teach to the test. 6. The communication is fantastic. I have never once been lost in the shuffle. 7. They greet me and my children every day with a genuine smile and by name. 8. They make learning fun! 9. It is a real community with people from all over the world, right here at Pinecrest, and I love that! 10. Parents are welcome to help and be a part of the school. It s encouraged, but not mandatory. So if you want a wonderful education, a nurturing community and a safe place for your children, come take a look. The view is going to get even better when we have our new lower school building in place. Oh, and it doesn t hurt that our tuition is considerably less than most non-parochial private schools in the area. Bonus! Bottom line: We couldn't be happier.

This school makes learning fun, and the smaller classes lead to a very individualized experience for the kids. The highlight of each school year is the class play, which the teachers often co-create with the students. The kids have a great experience, and learn about the subject matter, from US History to Insects, and more. I have had all three of my children attend Pinecrest, and headed there to benefit my oldest, who was overwhelmed by the large, loud classes at public school. But my two youngest have also thrived in this very personal learning environment. The school follows the standards of learning set forth by the county, then moves beyond the approved curriculum with team projects, after school programs, and many, many field trips to DC, Williamsburg, local nature centers, etc. Finally, my kids love the voluntary K-Kids group that is part of the Kiwanis-- the children learn about not just ways to help others, but why it is important to help others. The school does offer financial aid, and can be very generous in special cases-- but it is also one of the most affordable private schools in VA.

My kids are thriving at Pinecrest and truly LOVE school. The teachers are PHENOMENAL -- dynamic, creative and really are committed to actively engaging students. For example, my kids' classes have baked a giant cookie in the shape of Virginia and iced it to identify the regions, created resumes and applied for classroom jobs to make enough money to write checks for their monthly mortgage (their desk) utilities, etc, mentored the younger students by reading to them through the school's weekly Book Buddy program, made their own mini movies in computer class, complete with voice-overs and take home CD's.... and so on. I am amazed at what they are learning and retaining at their ages -- and think it's largely due to being so happy and engaged there. So thankful for Pinecrest!

We pulled our daughter out of public school and have watched her confidence soar since day #1 at Pinecrest. I have been brought to tears seeing the changes in her and seeing her find her way. She was admitted into our base school's AAP program and is not only learning more than she was, but is loving going to school every day. The kids look out for each other and the Head of School reinforces that behavior on a daily basis. There is a spirit of kindness here that we have seen her completely embrace. Among her favorite Pinecrest special events is a Thanksgiving feast where all of the students are served by parents and are then seated with students and teachers from other grades. This tradition epitomizes the school's "This is Community" mantra, which makes for such a successful learning environment for our daughter. Pinecrest is a rare find, and we are thrilled to have discovered it.

Pinecrest is about community. As a parent, you must be willing to contribute as much to your children's educational experience as the wonderful staff who work with them daily. The children, knowing that mom and/or dad are also dedicated, naturally tend to step up and engage fully. The results are unbelievable and the kids love going to school. Pinecrest focuses as much on the emotional and social development of young children as they do the academic development. And with small class sizes, the kids get significant individualized attention. Each child is pushed according to his/her abilities and supported individually to stay on grade level. Enrichment classes, including Spanish, PE, Art, Music and Computers begin during Pre-K and drive a comprehensive curriculum. We have two children at Pinecrest and like many other parents, wanted an environment driven by a love of learning, not of testing and frustrated teachers. We've been rewarded by teachers who love their work, kids who love their school and a community of parents who devote their time to helping make it all possible. And the tuition is far less than many of the other private schools in the area. We could not be happier.

We cant believe we have found such a warm, positive, intellectual, creative environment for our son to spend his school days! The local public school offered a "traditional education." Our son cried every morning and dreaded going back the next day. The faculty seemed impatient and exhausted. Toward the end of 3rd grade, we decided to look for a private school within our price-range that might salvage his impression of learning and ease his anxiety. Pinecrest seemed to match our criteria, but we had no idea how much it would alter his educational experience. He BEGS for school in the morning. At pick-up time he spills all of the fun details of the day. This is hands-down the BEST decision we have ever made. Gifted students may excel further, while students with needs are given time and attention needed. Discipline is handled in a supportive/appropriate manner (which gives my son relief from worry/distraction.) Music, art, foreign language, computer and a phenomenal gym "coach" make this place feel like summer camp, every day! Pinecrest has put our son's attitude about school in the right direction, and will leave him with deep roots and strong wings for secondary school.

I cannot say enough positive things about Pinecrest. It is clearly a hidden gem! I have 2 children that currently attend this school and they both are so eager to get to school each morning. (A huge turn-around from their previous school where they would be crying when I dropped them off and picked them up!) The teachers are not only adept at gently pushing each child to their full academic potential but they are very nurturing and concerned about each child's emotional development. The Pinecrest Community focuses on the whole child and each child gets the attention they need. Class sizes are considerably smaller than other schools, both private and public, and the parents are very involved in this tight knit community. I appreciate the recommendation I received from another parent that steered us to Pinecrest! Kudos to all the staff and teachers!!!!
