All three of my kids have loved Burgundy. I currently have two enrolled and one that graduated last year and is in High School now. From the moment you step onto the campus, you can feel the warmth, intention, and authenticity that make this school stand out. The teachers are not only highly skilled but genuinely invested in each childs growthacademically, socially, and emotionally. They take time to understand every student as an individual, creating an environment where kids feel seen, supported, and encouraged to explore their interests. This carries with them as they attend high school and college.

The schools hands-on, experiential learning approach is a game changer. Students dont just memorize factsthey engage with the world around them, think critically, and develop a real love of learning. The campus itself is beautiful and thoughtfully maintained, offering plenty of outdoor space thats actually integrated into the curriculum.

Communication with families is excellent, and the sense of community is one of the strongest Ive experienced. Parents, teachers, and staff truly work together, and it shows in the confidence and joy you see in the students.

If youre looking for a school that combines strong academics, compassionate educators, and a nurturing environment, Burgundy Country Day School deserves to be at the top of your list. Highly recommend!

I have a child that attended Burgundy from K-8. In grade 6, we were already to move on from Burgundy, but decided to stay through middle school to maintain consistency for our child. The small class sizes are amazing from K-5. In grade 5, social and emotional issues start to arise that the school is not prepared to deal with. Burgundy certainly tries and throws a lot of talk at the issues, but not much action. During the middle school years, which are hard years for every child, the small size of the school became too socially limiting for my child. I have a biracial child and although Burgundy touts itself as being diverse and inclusive, other students began to make my child feel unwelcome. When my child and others asked their teachers and administration for help regarding school bullies, the adults did nothing. This eroded trust in the faculty. These things turned Burgundy from a place my child loved to a place they couldn't wait to get away from.

In short, I'd recommend the lower school (JK-5) for rambunctious, younger children, but I would not recommend the upper school (6-8) to anyone.

Pre-k thru 3rd grade, Burgundy Farm is a good learning environment. Faculty/administration is not equipped to respond to more mature social concepts/challenges that are introduced to preteens and teens. School administration retataliates against families that try to voice concerns within the school. There is no real diversity or inclusion. Do not recommend Burgundy Farm as a supportive environment for children of color.

Burgundy is a remarkable school offering a comprehensive progressive education, supported by caring, engaged, and talented teachers and administrative staff. My son is thriving at BCDS - academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. We are very pleased with our decision to send him there and see significant returns on our investment across all hard and soft childhood development indicators.

Burgundy offers much more than an excellent box-checked education; it enriches the childhood and learning experiences of its students. Pedagogy is purposefully tailored to take advantage of the school's natural endowment (25 acres of school campus, excluding the recent addition of the neighboring Burgundy stables purchased in 2022, and over 600 acres at 'the Cove', BCDS's remote learning campus in West Virginia), opportunities for peer learning and collaboration, and learning through play.

No education experience is perfect, but I have been impressed by the school's responsiveness when we have raised concerns or leveled complaints to the administration. The school has demonstrated a positive problem-solving attitude, working with my family to proactively address concerns and remedy missteps. My son has some atypical challenges. Burgundy has been extremely accommodating of his needs and facilitates his full participation in the school's robust physical life.

My son loves going to school and routinely complains that he doesn't want to leave when we arrive at pickup. The voluminous sand that emanates from his shoes and random bandaids that appear on his body is a testament to outdoor childhood experiences increasingly rare in large metro areas. I look forward to continuing our educational journey with the BCDS community, particularly the offline (no screens) learning facilitated at the Cove - a thread of Burgundy experience and enrichment that deepens with age.

Burgundy is like nowhere I have worked before. It is a highly collaborative, supportive, and understanding environment. Not only do they want to see the students grow, but staff & faculty as well. Very excited to be working in such a strong community. Additionally, the students seem so happy! A hidden gem in the DMV area.

This school needs to revisit its charter and reason for existing in the first place. It claims to be progressive, inclusive and diverse. It really isnt when you scrape away the veneer. If you are really looking for a place that invests in its teachers salaries and resources that can effectively, and purposefully manage differences (race, academics, social), dont bother with this place. Their approach to everything is ad hoc, and meandering. Their head of school looks good on paper, is an excellent talking head, but a mediocre administrator.

Awful, poor communication among professionals there and with outside professionals. Not much effort to truly communicate with parents, especially in 2nd and 3rd grades.

Minimal amount of homework in the early grades. Reasonable in later grades but some work was not clearly explained as to the purpose of it.

Kindergarten and first grade experiences were effective. At the second grade and third grade level at the time the school had students go for two years with the same teacher. This was not helpful for our child and our child felt very uncomfortable with the teacher. Administration did not let a change occur.

This is where I think the school was very weak, although the school advertised itself as being progressive and attentive to other types of learning and learners. Teachers appeared to not be well versed in learning differences and alternative ways of learning. They were not receptive to listening to outside professional perspectives or to parents' experiences. As well, the speech language pathologist that worked at the school had much power and influence there and had a big private practice at this school. Her word appeared to be the final word and was not questioned.

Both in the Lower school and now in Middle School we have been pleased with the amount of homework and the teachers willingness to meet each child where he or she is relative to the assigned work.

Students are engaged and learning constantly about right from wrong, moral decision making and respect for others. The students have real world conversations about people and feelings. It is one of the things we treasure the most.

The Head of School as well as the Lower & Middle School heads are engaged and present. Everyone is only an email or phone call away and makes a concerted effort to know each and every parent by name. Obviously the students are the first priority - but parents are treated with respect and listened to about even the smallest concern.

There are learning specialists in both the Lower and Middle School who will work closely with parents and students to determine what kind of accommodation may be needed and how to work with your child so that he or she will maximize their potential. The classroom teachers do the same.

Teachers and administrators take this very seriously. Small group talks are held in class and in homeroom if topics need to be addressed in a group setting and parents are continually looped in to make sure that issues are addressed.

My son is currently 1st grade and has attended Burgundy since JK. The growth that I have witnessed socially and academically in this comfortable environment has been refreshing. Burgundy focuses on the whole child and is critical for my family.

School doesnt understand learning differences although they say they do. They dont want to truly listen to parents experiences with their child and only recommend certain professionals. They wont consider different points of view when discussing a childs learning profile. The public school does a far better job with students with learning differences. School staff limited in their knowledge and skills for learning differences and can be rigid in their approaches. Public school does a far better job.

As a parent of two kids (one in elementary and one in middle school), I can say without hesitation that the school is very effective at creating an environment where students can learn and focus on their areas of interest. In my experience, giving students freedom to explore creates a very positive attitude towards school and teachers. All kids and teachers are on first name basis, which at first I thought of as odd, but have grown to appreciate the confidence this gives kids in expressing themselves in class and other places.
As an added bonus and in addition to a campus where students can enjoy the outdoors and nature, the school owns a large property in West Virgina, where environmental science and other subjects are interlaced to make the learning experience quite unique.

I will update this review once my older child is closer to finishing middle school and here readiness for high school is more apparent.

We have attended BFCD for 8 years and it has been a wonderful experience. The teachers are amazing and give their all to help our kids be scholars ,responsible citizens , and good stewards of our planet. Im proud to be a part of this community.

I love how they get most of their work done at school where they are able to ask questions and have guidance. The homework level does not cause stress on our family time, but I feel the work is getting done!!

After having out son evaluated for ADHD, the lower school learning specialist worked directly with us to determine an accommodation plan. The teachers have all been very supportive and extremely helpful in implementing the strategies we came up with.

Our kids love their teachers and can't wait to go to school each day. Their love of learning is encouraged and nurtured. We have enjoyed becoming a part of the Burgundy community. Their mission to focus on the whole child is what drew us to the school and what keeps us coming back each year. We hope to keep both our kids here through 8th grade!

The teachers are loving and supportive. My child loves going to school each and every day. Home work is age appropriate and engaging. There is a collaborative learning environment. Coming from a competitive environment I've seen my child transition back to learning for the love of learning rather than completing things for praise, sticker or ranking. Children practice the virtues of kindness and inclusiveness here. Class rooms size is small and effective. Communication is amazing. Feedback regarding our child is specific and demonstrates that the teacher "knows" our child. There is no "clocking in and clocking out" here....everyone cares. Leadership is amazing. Heads of school are very accessible (I read otherwise before transitioning to this school and cannot imagine why). We are so glad that we chose Burgundy!

Our child started in JK, for which we primarily applied for with the intention to ensure Kindergarten admission the following year, for which we are glad we did due to a long wait list for K openings. But that JK year was instrumental in building a foundation for our child to learn and love learning! He approached kindergarten with full on confidence, joy, and determination. The journey ever since has been a fun-filled learning adventure. Love the small class sizes, social and emotional development, and building an appreciation for nature, the environment and people of all backgrounds and walks of life. No where else does a child get sad when summer vacation arrives because they would rather be in school!

Honesty, integrity and fairness are taught in a way that encourages self-direction in problem-solving, learning to become self-advocates and being able to trust others to help with conflict resolution when help is needed (whether it is adult support or peer support).

Our child loves the school and the close-nit environment has really helped our child gain confidence. We also feel that the academic environment is appropriately challenging. We are surprised and disappointed at how unresponsive and dismissive the administrators can be toward parent questions, suggestions, or concerns. While the weekly newsletter helps keep parents informed, it can take days for a call or email to be returned, and, even then, little follow up to see if the issues raised have been addressed. Indeed, we have even found an air of arrogance if suggestions are critical to the current structure -- as though parents couldn't possibly have anything to offer when it comes to educating children. Disappointing, to say the least.

I am one of the Class of 2012 graduates, and I attended Burgundy for 10 years. Not only does this school have rigorous academics, but also helps each student learn who they are as a learner, a thinker, a friend, a person, or a leader. Burgundy cherishes and strives to maintain the rich diversity and to engage the whole child in hands-on learning that instills respect for themselves, others, and the natural world. I could not recommend Burgundy more for any child. I had the most amazing experiences, made strong friendships, and enjoyed the interesting and intense academics. I loved every minute of it and will definitely stay in touch with the school!

I am an 8th grade student at Burgundy, and I have been going here for 9 years. I cannot recommend it more highly, and I think that if you are looking for a nurturing environment with excellent teacher-student relationships, Burgundy is the place for you. Definitely consider sending your child to Burgundy--I have loved every minute of my time here!
