Some of the courses taught are reasonable, but this school is not a great fit for academically gifted students. The course material tends to be repetitive and a lot of busiwork, even in the honors and AP courses. My children were challenged with the workload, but not with the sophistication and thought-provoking nature of instruction, more just the myriad of often boring assignments that needed to be handed in for grades. Over the years, I think my children learned more from their own personal pursuit of knowledge than they did from attending this school. That certainly makes me question the investment. Also, Flint Hill administration is horrible! They do NOT act in the best interest of students and take a my-way-or-the-highway approach. They are incapable of understanding nuance, dont act in sophisticated way, and cant handle basic communications with decorum and professionalism. They also treat athletes and kids whose parents donate to the school very differently than other kids - definitely a two-tiered system. They dont have policies for disciplinary actions and make up everything as they go along. Don Paige, director of the Upper School, was a HUGE problem. He is now gone (my guess is he was pushed out) so maybe it is starting to come around but the problems with the administration were pretty deep seated when my kids were there.

I am a current student at Flint Hill and I love it here! My teachers are always so helpful to answer any questions I have and they explain the material that we are learning very well. They try to teach in a way that we can all understand. Class is mostly fun and we have projects and assignments that are fun and educational.

Enriching and structured, Flint Hill is an exceptional institution. Learning accommodations and support from staff come in abundance here. There is a reassuring balance between fun and work. Teachers are certified in making sure you are your best student. Athletics and clubs are plentiful. Fine arts is well-funded and luxuriant.

Flint Hill combines excellent academics with a warm and welcoming community. We have found the teachers to be bright, engaging and invested in the development of each child. There are terrific resources available for students with mild learning disabilities and there is no stigma in accessing those resources to the extent they are needed. Importantly, there is an environment of mutual respect that extends to the way children interact with each other. Our child has a number of friends from a variety of backgrounds. We could not be happier at this school.

Flint Hill has been a fabulous experience for my very different children. Rather than inundate students with ridiculous loads of busywork, the academics focus upon the pursuit of knowledge, teamwork, and building strong study and work habits. Classes take on a college prep feel as the students matriculate through high school. Flint Hill challenges the academic all-stars and the grade level students alike. Finally, the mutual respect between the teachers and the students creates a unique classroom environment in which the students engage in deeper debate and dialogue rather than merely checking off the list of items to be learned that day in class.

We are new parents just finishing our first year but I wanted to post a review for a few reasons: (1) the comment about the playgrounds someone made is not current; the lower school has great playgrounds; (2) we've been very pleased with the school's efforts to strengthen our daughter's reading skills--the resources are great; (3) I have seen bullying addressed thoughtfully. I believe the comments about bullying are either overblown or outdated. I have observed incidents that were handled well or perhaps more apparent in the upper school. Was a huge issue for me when I first joined. I recall hating school, And coming home crying. Teachers did nothing. I dont know how I would have survived that first year without the unconditional love and support I got from my parents.

Once I managed to handle the bullying and get a good group of core friends, the experience changed completely, and my high school years at FHS were some of the happiest memories I have of my childhood. I was well prepared for college & excelled academically. Socially, I had no problems adjusting to college life, and was comfortable in my own skin.

We were planning on sending our children to Flint Hill. The admission department was impossible to speak with in person; they only want to communicate through email. When you are planning your childrens' future, this method of communication is totally unacceptable. Fortunately there are many excellent private schools in the Washington, DC area. We found that Holton Arms, Nysmith, and Potomac were more than happy to speak with us.

The core values of this school are what make it exceptional. Each student is accountable and responsible for their actions and their education. Grit and integrity are incorporated in daily learning. Class sizes are small, around 15 in a class. Teachers are eager to help students succeed. Innovation, individualization, and devotion to learning are tangeable reasons my 2 children have become such good students. They love their teachers! Their college counseling services are an invaluable resource!

Our child is new at FHS this year and has had a fantastic experience. From creative assignments, to active support from teachers (she is not in the learning center) to competitive athletics, she is absolutely thriving. Character development is a focus, and that is one of the elements of the school that appealed to us. So pleased with our choice!

As a parent, I couldn't be more pleased with my child's experience at Flint Hill. The academic program offers both challenge and ample teacher support and access. The teachers go above and beyond and truly care about a student's success in and out of the classroom. Our familys experience has been tremendously positive - I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to other families looking for a great independent school.

I hate this school more than anything. This school has terrible teachers. I highly doubt they care about your future. They care about their paycheck. I am probably going to get expelled if they find me doing this. They are so strict if you don't put a website at the bottom of your page then you get an in school suspension (good luck getting into college with that on your transcript) . If you chew gum detention. If you cuss detention. If you ever talk about your teachers and say that they could be better then you are probably going to get suspended for at least a day. The kids are mean and like to leave you out. Do you really want to develop an anxiety disorder like at least ten of my friends which is over half of them, Flint Hill is your best bet.

We've had nothing but good experiences with Flint Hill. Top notch communication between teachers and parents, and our child has always felt like he was part of a larger family. So far the return on investment has been worth it. Some of the reviews from parents here make me question whether they've actually been to the school. As with any educational program, the more you and your kid puts into it, the more you'll get out of it. I'd recommend it to anybody.

Pay a college tuition to get MacBooks and a public school education. My physics and spanish teacher were 23 years old and they were terrible teachers. People are way too cliquey but will be nice to you sometimes if they don't know you. No real friends but people you who hang out with.

We recently left Flint Hill and we were very disappointed to find out that our kids were way behind their peers and we had to hire tutors to get them to grade level. We were initially enamored by Admissions and the Administration. What they say and what is actually done at the school seem like 2 different things. Don't take the school's word and "trust the process" like we did. Please do your research or else it could be a very costly mistake. They seem to follow a very progressive education approach and the teachers are lenient; hence, why it is not a pressure cooker school. The school is a Learning Center school. A funder and founder of Flint Hill made the Learning Center a huge priority when the school was set up and it is not going away. The school should embrace it, rather than trying to hide it. If your child needs help, struggling in public school or another private, this might be a good choice. Look elsewhere if you are looking for a solid academic school.

My son has been a student of Flint Hill since Kindergarten and is now in the 5th grade. I think the best way to judge a school is to look at the students, Flint Hill students at all levels are exceptional. Flint Hill has made it possible for my son to push beyond grade level on many subjects, explore topics in depth, develop into an outgoing leader, be a compassionate friend and competitive athlete. Throughout Lower School and now Middle School he has had teachers that are passionate about their work and their students. I think that Flint Hill students are the most well rounded and happy graduates of all area independent schools. We look forward to the next 7 years at Flint Hill and the young man that our son will become because of the school.

Flint Hill one of the best kept secrets of the metro-DC area. It is a school filled with passionate and compassionate faculty and administrators at all grade levels. My children have had one master teacher after another from Lower to Middle to Upper School. The school's dedication to relationships, character and academics shine through every aspect of school life. Students are encouraged to be themselves both by the faculty and by peers. Small classes that are not focused on the SOLs allow the children to truly learn how to think. Worth every penny of the tuition!!

The school is academically fine but not great. I feel that there is more focus on rules and regulations than really educating. For example, in high school, students sometimes do not get back their tests to learn their mistakes for fear of sharing their tests with others. Socially this is a very conservative school and not a great fit for all. It is a tough atmosphere for new students as families and students keep to themselves and one must really make an effort to make friends. As a result, the school doesn't really know how to handle the social scene and has gone and hired a director of diversity to solve this issue. Little will change as its the community which is so conservative. If you are in to sports, it is a good environment but its really not a great school for the arts and theatre as much as it claims to be. The school is really trying to make technology their main focus but doesn't still offer coding as one of their science requirements. Most teachers are very caring but over the years, the better teachers have only stayed at the school just about two or three years maximum. If I were to repeat it all over, I am not sure I would send my kid here.

With average academics, an uninspiring campus (no cafeteria, low library volume, no real playground - kids play on blacktop parking lot), this middle and lower school seem to have lost their way. With tuition skyrocketing, families are fleeing. A new MS director seems to have made things worse; the school needs a better leader with more experience and skills. The leadership either does not recognize the need to improve or is not acknowledging it. Either way FHS has an odd character to it where the school puts the needs and interests of its administrators above its students and families. HS may be better. A safe, friendly spot to put your children if you are not from the U.S., not paying tuition yourself, have a child with a learning disability, are here a short time or academics/child development are not that important to you. Also if you are on faculty (much reduced tuition.) Otherwise, keep looking. This MS and ES are not nearly worth their enormous price tag, a disappointment to many long time families.

My daughter has been at the school for over 2 years. We are an international family and have traveled a lot with our children. FHS is a very international school. The different nationalities and cultures represented at FHS made it easy for my daughter to find friends. I had concerns about the intense technical nature of the curriculum, but I now see it is excellent preparation for my daughter college career. She has learned to measure out her work and discriminate among websites for research projects. Lastly, the teachers at FHS are very well and broadly educated, providing excellent intellectual models for our students.

Flint Hill school mainstreams gifted children with different learning styles. Our daughter scores very high in all areas tested, but struggles with focusing while in class. She bores easily, and needs a stimulating environment. Her psychologist suggested Flint Hill, and we couldn't be happier. Although she is not starting until this fall, we are already impressed with the school on many levels. Very warm and engaging headmaster.

My daughter has been a student at Flint Hill for the past seven years. My daughter has a passion for all things math and science, and we find that Flint Hill course keeps her engaged. The curiculum is very demanding and taught by excellent teachers. As a military family, it was very important to find a school that would make our daughter filled safe and appreciated. Flint Hill has an excellent program and Top Notch Teachers/school administration.

My children have been at this school for 11 years and it has been nothing short of amazing. No school is perfect but this school is as close as you can get. Small class sizes great teachers and a fantastic differentiated learning program. When I talk to parents of children that have moved on to college they all say the same thing about Flint Hill: "Their children were well prepared" not sure if a school can receive a higher compliment.

Flint Hill is an easy school in the Lower school and middle school. I haven't been to the upper school. I mean 1/2 of the grad got A's in all subject in 5th and 6th grade and 1/4 of the class got A's in all subjects for seventh through eighth grade. It has one of the best Latin programs, a strong English and Social studies program, an okay math program; however lacks in Science. Sports are decent there. I would definitely go there if you are looking to be a lawyer, or something that English or social studies can help.

Our child was at Flint Hill for 4 years. We were told in the Spring of 8th grade that we were not going to be accepted into the upper school. Our child was originally admitted to Flint Hill knowing we would be using the Learning Center. The school is changing direction & does not really want these children. They instead 'council them out'. Don't be fooled to spend your time or money with them if your child has any learning processing issues. Our child is doing well in his new school & we couldn't be happier.

fhs is awesome!! i'm in 8th grade, and i've been here since 1st grade, and the transitions from each grade are very well done. the work gets harder in 7th and 8th grade, but nothing unbearable. i have a sister who graduated just this previous year, and she is amazed by the teachers of flint hill, and how much they really do care. this is the same case for me - i've probably had ONE teacher whom i don't like, and the same for my sister. the price one must pay for flint hill is expensive, but DEFINITELY worth it.

This school has been amazing for me. It has 5 different language courses, band, chorus, percussion, and even orchestra! Academics there are of the hook! They are challenging but very rewarding! It is a very safe environment and haven't seen any bullying or harassment. Flint Hill school is top notch.
