My children have attended MSNV and I couldn't recommend it more. Small class sizes, incredibly attentive well-trained teachers, amazing experiences in and outside school grounds. Students are kind and thoughtful, and MSNV pays attention to helping kids become well-rounded and considerate, as well as academically successful. My kids love going to school and have made amazing friends. They absorb information without realizing it and, as a result, love exploring and learning new things. The teachers' passion and excitement for learning and exploring are contagious. We have made lifelong friends in many of the parents we have met through our children.

Many of the teachers are parents with children at this school. Naturally. I am sure they all have a good opinion of the school and can give very printable accolades.
Like the other parent who reviewed, we decided to leave, as one child didnt get any help for problems with a bullying child. There were other issues with gaps in learning for the younger child. Social development was not considered at all. Also most parents here are able to pick up their children at 3 pm daily and put up with school ending a couple of weeks earlier than any other school and starting a couple of weeks after any other school start. It was a burden for us on top of it all.
Safety was never a concern.

The administration was challenging to work with. Our child attended the school and the administration made decisions, without notifying the parents, that would have had an outsized impact on our childs education. I was surprised by their lack of consideration and empathy. Our efforts to reach out to them also seemed to fall on deaf ears. While the broader school atmosphere was warm, this issue overshadowed everything else and we made the decision to remove our child from the school.
I know that some have had better experiences, but I would say that those same experiences arent necessarily consistent across the MSNV community. I would recommend doing your homework and talking to a range of parents about the pluses and minuses before making a decision on this school.

Our daughter has had a wonderful experience at MSNV. She has been there for 3 years now (2 years in primary, 1 year in elementary) and is thriving. The culture of the school is warm and feels like a family, the leadership is strong and purposeful, and the teachers are attentive to the children's needs and their development. My husband and I are very glad that we chose MSNV and we plan on keeping our daughter there up until 6th grade. We notice the benefits of a Montessori approach-our daughter initiates work and exploration (Even at home), manages her time well, and TRULY enjoys learning. We get detailed reports on what her class is learning each week, and the teachers are always open to engaging with us if we have questions or concerns.

We send both our daughters to this school despite being in a really great neighborhood that everyone moves into for the schools. We found MSNV when we were looking for a 2s program for our older daughter. We ended up moving after half a year to NYC and sending our daughter to much more expensive schools up there. However, we believe MSNV is much better than any of the schools we saw/attended in Manhattan and moved back to re-enroll our child here.
Both girls love school, we never have to convince them to go in the mornings. They are both excited to learn. The teachers are warm and caring, the other students are also down to earth and grounded as that is the type of family this school attracts. The academics are excellent as my first grader is learning multiplication, and practicing her public speaking. They have done a great job throughout COVID in protecting the children and ensuring the Montessori experience is not lost. They really focus on the whole child though and teach them to be kind, and hard-working.
I grew up in Fairfax county public schools and attended TJHSST, but I would much prefer my kids to attend MSNV, I hope they are able to expand to high school soon!

MSNV has been the perfect place for the development of my kids academically, socially and emotionally. I have found the communication to be open and welcome between teachers, staff and parents which I feel has helped build a close community.

Homework is not given at MSNV which after review is developmentally appropriate for children in this age range. My son who is now in upper elementary (4th-6th grade class) did have a reading journal to maintain after school while he was in lower elementary. Despite not assigning such work over the past years in upper elementary, he reads daily. MSNV has done a wonderful job instilling a love of learning for both of my kids.

My family has been part of MSNV for the past 6 years! With the multi year classrooms, my children have had a very special opportunity to develop strong relationships with their teachers. The teachers at MSNV are truly dedicated to the well being of the children. My youngest had to leave school for some time due to medical issues, and during her time away her teachers did everything they could to keep her connected. When it was time to return, they enabled a transition far better than I could have expected. I continue to be pleased at their attention to my children's interest in learning and supporting them to take it a step further when warranted.

MSNV has supported my children socially and academically within a community that fosters respect for one another and the environment around them. Virtues class, conflict resolution and a peace corner are pieces to the curriculum that to my family are paramount to the education of our children.

MSNV has grown its upper elementary program impressively over the past years most recently with the addition of a fine band program to its music curriculum. The school was recently renovated with all of the focus to the children's needs.

MSNV has two learning specialists available to support children though am unaware of the scope of the resources.

MSNV is magical! It has amazing teachers, staff and community. The thoughtful school environment helps instill a love for learning and its classrooms and outdoor spaces are state of the art. The best school in the area!

My child is in Primary and so far she has not had any homework which is completely developmentally appropriate.

Teachers at MSNV are highly skilled and knowledgeable as well as deeply caring. They take time to get to know each child at a very deep level. They have a strong professional development program with ongoing observations. The teachers approach to learning, discipline and motivation is like seeing magic unfold- the kids know exactly what they need to do without being told and are gently guided and redirected as needed. They foster a love for learning and promote curiosity, exploration and inquiry. My daughter loves her teachers and sees them not only as mentors but also as lifelong family friends.

MSNV teaches children to be active and engaged citizens - in the lives of their families as well as in the school and other communities. Children learn to take responsability for their choices in developmentally- appropriate ways and participate in helping others and helping the classroom.

Leadership at MSNV is solid. The team has a strong background in early childhood and is professional, warm, and inclusive. They truly partner with parents to help kids succeed and create a sense of community through meaningful activities and parent engagement/participation activities. Communication is excellent as school employs several tech platforms to deliver messages and keep parents informed.

As current parent we have felt so fortunate to be apart of the MSNV community for the past six years. Our child is thriving in the upper elementary program and genuinely so excited to go to school everyday. The Montessori curriculum is so valuable in allowing the children the creative freedom and the interpersonal social skills that will serve them the rest of their life. The outdoor opportunities throughout the day are fantastic and the incredible caring, nurturing environment truly provides an incredible experience for the children and the families of MSNV.

I've been thrilled with this school for my preschool and Kindergarten age children. I see that they teach both social/emotional skills as well as academics. The Montessori materials give a strong foundation in number sense, and the values of independence, peaceful conflict resolution, and respectful communication are an excellent match for our parenting style.

Their approach is in line with current research showing that rote practice homework doesn't improve student achievement. Students need time outside of school to play: be creative, exercise, socialize, and sleep!

Longevity of staff and their high standards for training and ongoing professional development demonstrates the quality of the staff. They are loving, knowledgeable, and friendly.

We are so grateful to have our children at MSNV. The teachers are kind and attentive to our children, and wonderful at their profession. The school has a wonderful culture and environment, and the community of families who attend is a huge bonus. We can't recommend it highly enough!

After a year at MSNV we're still excited about having our children to be a part of the community and, most importantly, so are they. We have children in both preprimary and primary programs at Valleybrook campus. We love MSNV teachers and staff, we highly recommend this school.

We are thrilled with MSNV - the school community, teachers, administrators and students are truly exceptional. Our child has learned so much from an academic stand point, but has thrived in terms of life skills and social development. When our child is around children outside MSNV, there is a notable difference in demeanor, respectful behavior and discourse, and social interaction. We truly believe our child is better off for attending MSNV.

There is no regular homework. Instead, students are assigned projects they design and complete independently.
Posted: September 11, 2017
The teachers are focused on not only the students' academic development but also emotional and social development.
Posted: September 11, 2017
MSNV is about developing self-sufficient, independent and socially conscious human beings.
Posted: September 11, 2017
Focus is on student and community development. Parents are a key component of the community experience at MSNV.
Posted: September 11, 2017
Montessori education is inherently self-paced. Each student progresses at a pace that allow him or her to truly learn life and academic skills.
Posted: September 11, 2017
I have not noted bullying as a problem at MSNV. Students are taught mechanisms for positively and peacefully solving differences.

We feel truly blessed to have found a school that has helped our children to learn respect for themselves, others and the world around them. The teachers truly care about each student's physical, emotional and academic growth and the result is a balanced school environment where kids learn and they are allowed to be kids. The environment is conducive to both quiet learners and active hands on learners. As all parents are part of the cooperative, there is a sense of community at the school that I have not seen elsewhere. For our children and for our family I cannot think of a better place to have our children building the foundation that will last a life time.

The Montessori School of Northern Virginia is a true gem of a school. This is our 5th year at the school for our 3 girls and there is hardly a day that goes by that we don't thank our lucky stars for having found this very special school when we moved to the area several years ago! I wish every child could know the magic of MSNV. The teachers and staff are unfailingly compassionate, deeply dedicated to each and every child, and masterful in their art of teaching. The philosophy, mission, tone, vibe, personality, leadership, people, and overall general daily 'feeling' of the school constantly proclaim and live what we most want our children to experience in their education: a deep joy of learning, a respect for others, a stewardship of their social and emotional well being, a commitment to the development of strong values, a guardianship of their natural environment, and a deliberate nurturing of their individuality and the diversity in those around them. MSNV is authentic montessori AND SO MUCH MORE, that we cannot imagine our children going without!
