I feel compelled to speak up about our experience at Holy Cross Academy. My child was treated differently because of his background and came home crying nearly every day. This was not a one time issue but a repeated pattern that caused real emotional harm.

When concerns were raised they were minimized and redirected. It became clear that protecting the schools reputation mattered more than addressing how a child was being treated. That alone is deeply troubling.

I also noticed another public review raising concerns about a possible bribery related issue involving the school. While I cannot speak to that situation personally it adds to a disturbing pattern of secrecy and image management rather than transparency and accountability. Parents deserve to know what kind of environment they are trusting with their children.

What I love most about Holy Cross is the character building and the development of executive functioning skills that is threaded through all aspects of school life. Ive had 4 children attend HCA, 2 have now graduated. It was hands down the best gift I could have given my children.

I was really impressed by the recent expansion at the school. The new middle school and cafeteria are great additions that have allowed the preschool and pre-K students to move into the school. The teachers are dedicated and I appreciate how involved the priests are in the life of the school. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved in the life of the school.

I was at this school, for over 7 years old ; The school was Decent UNTIL Our new printable DR FRY came to our school in a bad preference he hired bad teachers as our 5th grade specify they're name and our middle school history teacher HAS A DEGREE IN ENGLISH as no teachers do not want to come to this school they do not punish kids for they're action when bullying and they do not have a detention which most private school do have for its pricey amount to attend they're I would mostly not go to this school. Also i feel bad for the kindergardners as they do not have a playground

The elementary school is very good, BUT the middle school is absolutely terrible. 3/4 of the teachers are hired last minute and have no idea what the hell they're teaching. OUR HISTORY TEACHER IS AN ENGLISH MAJOR. The math test scores are in the toilet and we haven't had good math scores in 3 YEARS. There is also LOTS of racism and bullying and the school will do NOTHING about it. The principle has also MORE THAN ONCE walked into the GIRLS CHANGING ROOM with the excuse of "we were being too loud" The cafeteria food also has not passed the health check and just 2 days ago my friend's pizza was barely cooked and half dough. I've also been served EXPIRED MILK. I can't wait to get out of this school. You're better off going to a public school trust me. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T SEND YOUR KID HERE!!!!!!

I have two kids in this school and it's been a wonderful experience. It's a great feeling to know your kids are receiving a top notch education while also in a safe environment. My only hope is that the class sizes don't get any larger per teacher. Also, the teachers at HCA are very dedicated, caring, and we have yet to have any complaints about any teacher.

If you are a minority, please do NOT send your child here. They will be bullied and the administration will do nothing about it. Academics are questionable. My childs teacher claimed that he had learning disabilities yet when I had him tested independently it was determined that he does not have ANY learning issues. In fact , hes reading at 6/7th grade level and his other scores were above grade level as well.

I was a student at holy cross for 8 years.

Homework:
for 1st grade, all the way up to 8th i had from 1 and a half to two hours of homework and once i made it to 6th it was a hour a subject with test and quizzes being the same day for most of my classes. teacher would never communicate and when a student would tell them we had a lot of homework they didnt care.

teachers:
they didnt really care about us and i only had a couple good teachers but they left after the nuns got kicked out

special ed:
they tried to kick me out in first grade cause i have dyslexic but they legal couldnt and they special ed reading was really bad and made me go into normal english and spanish once i got to middle school even though i was still struggling.

bulling:
I am not white and most people at holy cross are white. anyways during 2016 a classmate told me to go back to mexico, also this kid had bullied me all year and i had told my teacher all year he had, and when i told my parents about they called the school and action finally happened. I got to the office and learned this was the first time my principal had heard about the kid bullying me and told him to apologize and he didnt, also told me to say sorry because that is what Jesus would have done i did not and will forever remember that.

the new principal:
the new principal told me i was the child of satan because a teacher falsely accused me of sleeping in class and i showed him my notes which proved i was awake and then my teacher had to apologize. this sucked cause i had to miss a entire history class that day.

dont send your kids to this school (especially if your not white) either send them to public or send them to another private school.

Both of my children spent 8 years at the school and have gone on to be very successful in both high school and college. I feel the foundation they received at Holy Cross was fantastic both spiritually and academically. I love the smaller class size and the way the Principal knows each student.

Many teachers at the school have been there for more than 20 years, this is both good and bad as its great teachers want to stay and speaks well of the culture, sometimes new teaching methods need to be introduced, this is more apparent in the middle school than the lower grades

Definitely a bad experience that makes me mad to think about. Bullying on the basis of race was plentiful when I attended. School work was overwhelming for being in the elementary side. It was very annoying going to a new teacher to meet them and they tell you "oh I've heard about you." The comment not recognizing first honors, but rather your reputation as a problem student. The school is very disconnected from the outside world and doesn't help kids feel like diversity is normal. Its lead to many xenophobic high-schoolers I had known. If you're not white, I especially do not recommend sending your kid here. Save the tuition money and focus on getting your kid into advanced programs in public schools. They usually allow for students to be on the same math and language level as HCA students when entering high school, and can even let them be a grade level above. Public schools teach the value of diversity better, and people find more people like them, whereas at HCA bullied children may not even find another kid they can rely on or relate to. This is all aside from the fact that Religion is a class and only teaches Catholicism. This is a part of the curriculum and distracts from learning more applicable classes. Also forces kids that may not be Catholic, to participate in this class. I do not recommend this school.

Teachers like to pass information about their "problem" students to the next teachers and make preconceived ideas about how direct the new teacher should be with discipline towards the student. Its unfair that a kid isn't quite given a fresh start at the start of a years

My friend with ADHD was having trouble focusing in our 1st grade class. He had trouble finishing our work, but my teacher must not have known, because she screamed at him, calling him lazy, and making him cry. She sticked around at the school and is still there.

My older daughter attended Holy Cross for Kindergarten and First Grade and it was simply a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, we ran into financial difficulties and with our younger daughter getting ready to enter school, we decided we had to stick with the public schools. My older daughter did fine in the public schools until she was bullied two years ago. My younger daughter has not. I'm considering applying for financial aid for next year (2019-2020) and, if financially feasible and she is admitted, switching her to Holy Cross for 6th - 8th Grade. Even though I actively participate in the school's "PTO," and have regular teacher conferences, I am very unhappy with her current public elementary school, particularly with its administration. I remember Holy Cross with great respect, admiration and fondness.

Overall for a private, paid, Catholic education, it leaves a lot to be desired in the way of teaching Christian values and practicing discipleship anongst the students and staff. We have had three children attend and this will be our last year at this school. It is unfortunate because there were a few great teachers in the lower grades in the past. If you do choose this school, plan on pulling them by the time Middle School rolls around.

The culture of the entire school needs to change. If you pay for private CHRISTIAN education. You expect the staff to be examples and uphold those values. That piece should be first. Again, everything goes unchecked, and it is not addressed in any way. Guidance is non-existant and there are no campaigns ongoing that are anti-bullying. It is basically ignored and there are things that go on in the middle school that my daughter should not even know about. There are clicks of girls and boys who say and do things that you would expect from a public high school. Teachers dont notice or dont care.

Sister Susan Louise, our principal is 100% devoted to this school. It is her life's work and she approaches it daily with a kindness and love that you won't find elsewhere. She is definitely a leader and has earned the respect of faculty, parents, and students alike.

Parents often only see one side of this issue: the side that negatively affects their child. Parents of the child being accused of bullying see it very differently. There is a constant amount of education that the children receive regarding bullying, kindness, empathy, and conflict resolution as you would see at any school today.

Going to Holy Cross Academy benefitted my children tremendously. Throughout High School and College they often referred to things they learned here and I felt tremendously blessed to have the Sisters to help guide them spiritually. They have had long lasting friendships that remain to this day well into their adult years. Holy Cross Academy is a place where parents are super helpful in and out of the classroom and the staff is dedicated to a higher purpose, making it an exceptional environment to help guide your child on a path to developing character and responsibility.

The teachers at the school care. As previously stated by an unhappy parent many give up their free periods to help their students. Of course this cannot always be done due to the other responsibilities that a teacher has. Many teachers stay after school and tutor. I wonder if those who have complained have taken advantage of this service. I doubt it. Teachers seem to be very willing to work with families to address their various needs/concerns.

Kids are kids. People are people. I know the teachers work hard to instill a friendly safe environment for the children. I have found that the parents who reinforce kindness and compassion at home and who have an open supportive relationship with the school community ( principal, teachers, other parents etc ) understand this and tend to do well

Learning differences are supported within reason. Classroom teachers do the best they can however HCA does not have a special ed teacher. There is 1 resource teacher. Some students are taken out of Spanish to get extra support in reading. Parents must sign off on this. Students are never pulled without parental permission. 99% of the time the resource teacher helps students in grades 1-5 with reading skills. If your child has learning issues it is the parents responsibility to find schools/services to address them. If your child is several grade levels behind in any subject area HCA probably isnt the school for your family. No special ed services and 1 resource teacher. Impossible for 1 person

HCA is a great school with fabulous teachers and administrators. There are pros and cons of every school. I have found that those who support the school and its teachers have a better experience. Most of these negative remarks on this site are coming from those who were not supportive and did not see true reality. HCA might not be the best school if your child has learning issues. Parents need to realize the capabilities of their children and find the help their child needs.
Parents are their childs first teachers and they must work together with the school ( whatever school they choose) to benefit their children. The teachers at HCA want to work with parents to help each child. It is a positive, safe learning environment where each child is able to feel success. Our experiences at HCA are positive

They pile it on even in the primary grades. Second grade was an hour to an hour and a half a night for us. Our child was struggling with certain subjects and their solution was to send it home for homework. In one evening she had 81 math problems.

Many teachers do as they please with little repercussions. Our experience with one last year was horrific. When the school was presented with things that had occurred they did nothing. In 5 years there we had 2 amazing teachers. The other 3 were not the best and resorted to screaming at their students to get them to follow directions.

The children at this school often go unchecked. My own child had been acting our for a year and half before we found out. AND we found out from staff only after our child was openly defying them. We had no idea and we were appalled they had let it go on so long. As parents you can not correct behaviors you aren't aware of. Many children at this school bully and are bullied with no support services. This school is ineffective and lets children off with warnings. Nothing is done. Children instead learn to lie, cheat and steal here. Our child had something stolen that she had worked hard for. She cried and we were told "Her behavior isn't normal" I should point out it was the first time she had ever had anything stolen from her and it was at her catholic school in second grade. That is not teaching the values we thought it would.

They make assurances that your child will be taken care of and get the help they need. Do not make the mistake we did. Remove your child immediately. It comes down to the teacher. We had a teacher offer to tutor our child for math then found out she had been dumped in a special reading group for slow readers because the teacher decided she didn't have time for that. We were notified of this change a few months later by our child. This school has zero follow through and ZERO resources for students with disabilities. Discipline for teachers is non existent. Despite us paying every year for an academic assessment. It will come down to if the teacher feels like adhering to it. Do not keep your child in this school you are failing them if you do and they will end up further behind.

There are children each year from Kindergarten up that bully. We left at the end of 4th grade. Last year sister the principal presented our teacher with a list of students bullying and those being bullied. It was at the end of the school year. It had been going on all year. Their solution was a list that the teacher then took. She kept ALL GIRLS ONLY THE GIRLS INSIDE FROM RECESS EVEN THOSE BEING BULLIED and yelled at them "This is so stupid don't bully". That was how they handled it. We learned our child was being bullied all year and the school was well aware. Nothing was done or reported other then her teacher admitting in writing "I told other teachers to keep an eye out" Not effective and we should have been notified.

We had 2 good years out of 5. This school was not a good for fit for us and we should have left years ago. They do not follow through on their policies and many children and teachers face little to zero repercussions for their actions. We left the school and would not recommend it to anyone. Several families that had been at the school with multiple children as long as we have left this year as well. We weren't the only ones very unhappy here. The school needs major changes.

The principal runs a very tight ship. She is responsive and well informed and tries to keep the parents involved. There are some areas that are in need of improvement, such as the expansion of the school, improving the caliber/resumes of teachers, especially middle school, and fair treatment of both boys and girls. There seems to be favoritism for girls because they don't have the discipline issues. Also, there doesn't seem to be a fair approach to leadership, especially in middle school. A child threatened to bring a gun to school, was suspended, and it was investigated, but he was still allowed to graduate and receive awards with his class. It doesn't send the right message to the rest of the school and community. Also, a child was seriously injured on the playground, and they called the parent rather than calling an ambulance for fear of the imagine it would create or need to report it.

There is little to no support for those children who are struggling. They have an honors math program, but nothing to help those on the other end of the spectrum that require extra assistance, such as reading help. You pay a lot for this school, but if you need extra help, you need to pay extra for a outside tutor. Teachers don't spend extra time with the students unless you pay them separately.

They have a system of blue slips that go through the guidance counselor, but it is kept in a file rather than communicating to parents and dealing with an issues. They monitor but don't effectively deal with it.

The elementary school side is EXCELLENT. The middle school side needs improvement with the way they handle behavior issues, treating both boys and girls equally (just because boys are harder to handle, doesn't mean they should be treated unfairly), and improving the caliber of teachers.

I have many friends and teachers that I will remember always. However I have also had the worst times of my life there. Sometimes I feel like I am a overwhelmed and that teachers wont do anything about it to help. I would rate 4/5 for elementary and 1/5 for middle school. This is a current student.

I feel that children should have time after school for extracurricular activities, family time, community involvement and playtime. While I understand the need for homework, I feel strongly that overall homework should be kept to a minimum to allow those activities.

The teachers and administration have far exceeded my (high) expectations during the past three years that my child has attended K thru 2nd there. Each year I am amazed with the creativity and passion of the teacher and each year I worry that the upcoming year could never be as wonderful. AND each year we are again met with a heartfelt teacher and a challenging but exciting and engaging curriculum. It is difficult to send your child away for 7+ hours each day and trust that they will be taught, guided and loved the same as if they were in your own care. Here at Holy Cross, it is not difficult to drop my child off there every morning. The teachers, faculty, and school community provide an environment that lives their faith, supports and encourages one another, and where my child is met with both academic challenges and success.

My son just completed Kindergarten. He was very happy and loved going to school. He loved his teachers and they loved the kids as well. I used to teach Kindergarten myself. He sang songs, played, made things. I went in once a month as a helper and saw what it was like. It was a very loving environment. I did not give 5 stars because I feel that there is always room to grow I never give 5 star to anything.

I strongly encourage parents to spend time at this school in their children's classrooms, particularly kindergarten. I have my masters degree in Early Childhood Education. I taught 1st grade for 6 years. My son attended kindergarten here for 5 months until my husband and I pulled him out. He was miserable. He cried every day before school and at night before bed. He told me horrible stories of kindergarten. I heard about a child having her paper thrown in the trash because her writing wasn't neat enough. I heard about how he never used the bathroom in the room because his teacher made them leave the door wide open while they went to the bathroom! On top of this, the school's teaching methods are extremely dated. Kindergarten consists of completing workbook page after workbook page. No manipulatives are EVER used. There are no learning centers for free exploration and hands on learning. There is absolutely no movement. They sit at their tables most of the day. Books are not read to the students by the teacher, instead they are played on the active board along with movie after uneducational movie. His teacher did not like noise. Her room of kindergarteners is often silent, not what kindergarten should be! There is no music, no fun educational songs to teach the days of the week etc. it is a very very sad place for these little ones and sadly they don't know what they're missing:(
My husband and I wrote 2 letters to the principal, about our concerns. When we didn't notice any changes, we then met with her and her assistant principal to discuss our growing concerns. Despite us sharing that we would rather not confront Our son's teacher directly with our concerns due to it having a possible negative effect on how our son was treated in class, the only solution that was offered was that we discuss our concerns directly with His teacher. So after several more weeks of no change and a child who cried every morning because he didn't want to go to Kindergarten, we made the very difficult decision to pull him out of Holy Cross Academy and put him in public school. He loved his new school. We saw an immediate change in him and he actually said he loved going to school now! Please take my advice and spend time in your child's classroom during everyday instruction. This was our experience with Kindergarten and the leadership at Holy Cross.

These teachers care about their students, not their union. This caring makes them more effective, and the openness of contact with parents makes the school and home work together in a way that is much more effective for the growth of the student.

One example: a young student who cheated on a math quiz provided an example of the fact that humans fail morally sometimes. While she got a zero on the quiz, she reminded the other students that they are only cheating themselves when they cheat at school. Good, empathetic teachers reinforced this lesson without lambasting the young offender any more than was necessary and an important lesson about honesty and fairness was introduced.

This is far and away the best K-8 school in the Fredericksburg area (and the preschool is pretty fabulous too). Academically, the advanced students are given challenges commensurate with their abilities while those who need some extra help receive devoted attention to catching up. This happens in the same classroom under the guidance of the spectacular faculty. The Salesian philosophy of learning, which makes compassion a major part of intellectual achievement, ensures that the children are grounded in a moral center that emphasizes kindness, courtesy and understanding. A can-do work ethic is also emphasized, which is a life-long attribute hard to come by in schools these days. Another rarity: actual diversity, with a student body whose parents hail from every populated continent and whose backgrounds include most major religions, philosophies and political views, all interacting respectfully under the watch of the Sisters who make the school run so well. I'd give them six stars if they'd open up a high school, and seven (seventeen?) if they'd move the school downtown. Still, well worth the trip.

God has entrusted six beautiful children to us and we are doing our best to insure that they are raised in the manner that will allow them to grow with His teachings. God has and continues to bless us so that we can send our children to Holy Cross Academy. People often ask why we have invested so much into Catholic education when they can attend school for free. I can tell you that listening to your youngest child (since kindergarten) sing to God every night, enjoying going to school, then advancing classes in high school because of the curriculum, makes it worth every penny. Four of our children have graduated HCA and high school but I remember them often coming home and saying that they missed HCA; praying and talking about God in school; but missing all their teachers. They mentioned that they were ahead of their peers because of HCAs curriculum, which is geared toward college readiness. The middle school teachers are always available for all students needing extra help. I have asked some of the middle school teachers to wait for my last child to go through their class because I know them and appreciate their hard work. As with any school public or private there are instances that I dont agree, however, we find a way to make it work. Our family has been there since the school commenced and it is our hope that the grandchildren can attend as well on day.

Elementary level was fine. Middle school math methods are uninspiring and outmoded. Discipline is so-so. Girls are favored. Religious atmosphere is solid and in line with the Magesterium.

I attended Holy Cross MANY years ago, and my 4 year old daughter has now attended their preschool for two consecutive years. The staff is superb! The teachers foster a relationship with the parents and students that supports and encourages each child to be the best that they possibility can achieve. I have no hesitation in sending my now-2-year-old there next year and cannot wait for my eldest to start at HCA in their kindergarten class next fall.

St. Mary Preschool is such a blessing. I cannot say enough good things about the teachers there. Mrs. Bain, Mrs. Bertram, and Mrs. McManus are so kind, patient, and loving and make each child feel loved. Would recommend to anyone!

This is our 2nd year at H.C.A and we couldn't be happier! Our kids are challenged on a daily basis! Lots of parental involvement, community is great, the Oblate Sisters do a good job running the school! Yes, it has its hiccups like any other school, but we couldn't be happier!!

HCA is a blessing to both children and parents. Extremely fortunate that the Oblate Sisters and the amazing staff give of themselves for the benefit of the kids. No school is perfect, as no person is perfect, but this little school is a gem! We have been lucky to call it home for 14 years and counting!

God created Holy Cross Academy (HCA), and I cannot be more happy and proud that he did. My two children attended HCA from kindergarten through eighth grades and the benefits and rewards that my husband and I see from their experience there is wonderful. HCA provided our children with a great elementary and middle school education, in addition to enhancing their knowledge of God s love in the Catholic faith, and it was due to the loving environment and exceptional administrative staff and teachers that have dedicated their lives to them and America s youth. As we look back, we feel so blessed that our children attend HCA.

My kids attended Holy Cross Academy for 6 years. We chose a parochial school for the benefits of our children learning and practicing their faith. We liked the idea that it was essentially run by nuns. However, the culture of the place does not represent a place of faith. I have known many families that have left due to children being bullied and the administration doing nothing about it. There is absolutely no consistancy in discipline or standards of behavior. Even physical assaults went unpunished. The culture is as much about adult clicks as those in the student population. There are 4 sisters in the same family working there as teachers and 2 of the nuns are blood sisters. That leaves very little room for fair professional behavior. Very dysfunctional place.

My children attended HCA 4 years ago. My husband is military and we unfortunately needed to move on. Of the 5 schools we have attended HCA is by far the best, The community is amazing. I always tell people this school has a heartbeat, and you can feel it when you walk in the doors. There was no mandatory volunteering like many other schools we have attended, but there didn't need to be. The parents were a rare crowd of people who stepped up to help wherever needed. The Sisters are sweet, unbiased, loving women who make this school "all about the children"!

My daughter went to Holy Cross for 7th and 8th grade. Excellent school. She played field hockey and made many friends. There were about 60 kids in 8th grade, so the teachers knew all the kids. My daughter is in public school now and I really miss the small school atmosphere.
