The teachers and staff are excellent. They continue to exceed expectations when it comes to helping communicate with parents in an attemt to resolve bullying issues.They also help students with disabillities be able to thrive in learning, communication, and socialabillity.

Teachers have been very impatient with my child's attention deficit when I have been unable to afford his medication

Absolutely not. My child has been a victim all year long and I feel the teachers could care less. My child has received and injury and been called names year round. I've had to persistently visit with administrators just to feel like something had been done, and I still feel my child is suffering

Again bullying is a huge problem, within the school and at its events

This school has a huge bullying problem which my child has fallen victim to time and again. Very little has been done to protect my child. Communication is also a problem pertaining to school events. Sending home a small form with no email or other correspondence is not an effective way to communicate to parents when their child has an attention deficit

A lot of the staff is rude, aside from a few teachers that are excellent. They give about as much courtesy as a DMV employee most days

Teachers are effective and driving the students the right way. The orchestra teacher is adored by the students.

My son doesn't have much, but I know others that bring home a few assignments. It does not seem overwhelming.

There is both accountability and a "pride" in doing the right thing. One student found a significant amount of money at a local store and turned it in and was honored in the public media, but also interviewed on the student "broadcast" network about what he did and why it was the right thing.

Our son has done very well at Mayfield. He loves the orchestra teacher (while we also hear great things about the band teacher as well). He also has plugged into the robotics team. The schools across the system are improving over the last few years -- even with some moves of teachers and administrators between the schools. We were slightly skeptical before 5th graded started, but after a great year, it looks like 6th grade should be good as well.

The Principal of this school understands what community is. This is the perfect subset of students to segregate and nurture in their own school. 5th graders get to practice "moving on" in a safe environment and 6th graders get to stay in a more structured day to day setting than a true middle school allows. This 5/6 set up allows our children to learn to adjust to change in a wonderful and supportive way. We love the choices our city schools make.

What a wonderful place for my son to spend 2 years of his life. He has been at Mayfield for a year and a half now and has thrived! The two year program before middle school has had a great effect on him. He has grown so much socially as well as academically. All the teachers he had as well as the administration took an interest in him. We are looking forward to Metz but being my youngest we sure will miss Mayfield next year.

Ok, so this school wasn't the best, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I have come from both sides of the equation. I was in non-GT my 5th grade year and GT my 6th grade year. I was underchallenged my 5th grade year. It didn't help that I was put in my opinion the lowest teir. The teacher I have nothing against. The students needed work. My 6th grade year was phenominal (thank you Mrs. King and Mrs. Groundwater) I sometimes quote it as one of my top 5 years. And yes, the GT program sometimes is a lot of work, especially getting into it. The administrators were great when I was there. Though I am aware that a power shift had occured.

As the parent of an autistic child, I had some concerns about my son attending Mayfield. The teachers and staff made a point of inviting my son and his classmates to visit the school prior to the beginning of the school year so that he could get "the lay of the land" and an idea of how he would move through the building before his first day. As a result, his transition from elementary school has been fantastic, and he is excelling. He enjoys going to school, and comes home in a good mood. Pretty much the entire staff, from the principal on down, has been communicative and receptive in helping my son learn and grow. My daughter attended Mayfield from 2008-2010, and had an excellent experience there as a GT student. She moved forward well-prepared for the next step in her educational journey. Schools really don't get much better than this, even the private schools. Two children, one GT and one special needs, have attended this school and excelled with the help of an incredible staff. One more to go (he'll be there in two years), and I look forward to it. I'm grateful to have such a high-quality school available to my children.

Students are intermingled regardless of capability. If your child is not GT you have to fight for attention and challenge. My child is being assessed for GT - if she doesn't make it we'll be getting outside assessment help because there is way she can thrive in a "regular" classroom.

I finished Mayfield this year. And I've been there for 5-6th grade. And I agree. That the teachers don't get what GT means.we were the only class with so much homework! I had to eat dinner like at 11 and go to bed like at 12 am! And I started doing my hw at 4pm. The teachers don't understand that we are STILL KIDS! NOT some robots. We got double the load of regular classes. My teacher expected us to be quite when she was talking to another teacher that interupted the TEACHING TIME!! We are kids, and are going to be kids. No matter what. And the kids who are not in GT are respectful and take school serious. Some GT kids are HORRIBLE!!!!!! Over all, Mayfield is AWESOME!

I went to Mayfield when it was brand new, three years ago. . I was in the GT program and I loved it, but the older you get the more you understand what is going on. The majority iof the teachers don't understand what GT is really about. It is about being on an advanced level and wanting to learn. However, we are still kids and are going to act like kids, the teachers don't understand this and put us on a pedestal like we are the statue of perfection. It puts a lot of pressure on us, sometimes a little too much pressure. The teachers dont understand that wse are supposed to get advanced work, not just double the load of regular classes. Just to give you a sample of what GT is really like.
