Potomac Crescent Waldorf School was the soft and nurturing landing spot my family aimed to find when sending our oldest child to school for the first time five years ago. My two other children have since begun their journey at this nature-based and screen free school as well, and we continue to wholeheartedly believe in the programs it offers. The teachers are dedicated and warm, and are specially trained in Waldorf education.

We came to Potomac Crescent Waldorf School looking for something we couldn't quite name and found it immediately. As a bilingual family raising kids in Northern Virginia, we wanted an environment where learning would feel joyful and rooted. PCWS has delivered that and more.

Watching our daughter grow through the Early Childhood program has been one of the quiet joys of our family's life here. I didnt know what to expect, as I wasnt familiar with the Waldorf curriculum. We chose the school during COVID because classes were held outdoors and it offered a screen-free environment. Ive since learned that time in nature and teaching concepts when children are developmentally ready are central to their philosophy. This is truly a screen-free school. We now have two kids at the school and have been here several years.

The program is academically rigorous, with reading and math taught through storytelling and play. Students also learn Spanish and Mandarin from dedicated language teachers. The school avoids teaching to tests or arbitrary metrics; instead, teachers are attentive to each childs unique pace and readiness. Teachers provide robust and customized assessments for parents so they understand where their child is developmentally with various topics.

Ive spoken with alumni families, and they consistently say their children excel after leaving PCWS, showing greater confidence and longer attention spans. One friend recently shared a funny story that their child was surprised by how many of their public school friends are glued to their phones and miss out on whats happening around them.

My son has been at Potomac Crescent for three years in the Early Childhood program. We were looking for a nurturing, caring environment that would offer an easy transition for him into school and could not be happier with his experience. The teachers go above and beyond to work with each individual child and their particular temperament to help them thrive. I've been amazed at his social-emotional as well as physical growth at PCWS which I attribute to the beautiful rhythm of the school week that incorporates art, storytelling, singing and movement, alongside play and plenty of time in nature -- including two days of the week entirely outdoors. We have also felt welcomed by the active Parent Association and love getting to know the other families in the Waldorf community.

We feel so lucky to have found Potomac Crescent Waldorf School in Alexandria, Virginia. As a military family moving from abroad, we wanted a school that would ease our son's transition and match the play- and nature-based learning he was used to. We werent entirely sure what to expect from a Waldorf school, but what we found exceeded our hopes.

From day one, our son has thrivedhe especially loves the forest days spent entirely outside. We've watched him grow from a cautious five-year-old into a confident, joyful six-year-old who truly looks forward to school. The teachers are incredibly nurturing and deeply committed to the childrens development.

Were excited to enroll him in first grade this fall and to continue as part of the Potomac Crescent community. While wed love to see more flexibility for dual-working parents as the school grows, we couldnt be more grateful for the experience so far. Its a place that nurtures the whole childbody, mind, and spirit!

My son attended PCWS in Alexandria from K-5 (2019-2025) and its been a wonderful experience for the whole family. Small classes and an extraordinarily nurturing culture and faculty team were essential to my sons learning, friendships, and his enjoyment of school. The Waldorf approach, which is screen free and includes strong emphasis on creativity, movement, and outdoor play naturally accommodates some differences in learning styles and social-emotional development. Teachers often stay together with student cohorts as they progress through the grades, which really helps in building on a childs strengths and addressing his or her challenges.

My children absolutely love the teaching staff and admin at Potomac Crescent Waldorf School. The teachers are loving, patient, kind, and encourage my children to learn and play in a beautiful community. The classes at PCWS are academically rigorous while encouraging a love of learning, wonder, and joy. Highly recommend if you are looking for a welcoming community of families and teachers.

What a wonderful school and community. Finding this school was a blessing for us and our child. Having the same teacher all the way through provides continuity in learning that is very unusual. The teacher and the kids develop a special bond year after year. Highly recommend!

This school was a nightmare!! My child was treated in a very racially hostile environment. They were never treated fairly and a teacher was allowed to be disrespectful and obnoxious. When we complained to management, they met with us but never took corrective action. If you have a child of color interested in this school, I suggest you think very carefully before wasting your time and money. In addition, my child didn't learn anything while attending this school.

My son attends PCWS and we have absolutely loved it. Like other families, we were drawn here because of the promotion of outdoor play, imagination, interpersonal skills, and no reliance on screens/technology. We knew very little about the Waldorf philosophy but have been very happy with it. Our son is more confident, gravitates towards playing with friends/outside versus wanting screens, and has thrived here. He is excited to go to school every day. Despite some misconceptions about Waldorf, he has also learned a lot academically (just in a more organic, less classroom-based way), and we believe the grades program will set him up well for when he needs to transition to another school. We also have zero concerns about his safety.

My son attended Potomac Crescent from the early childhood program through 5th grade. He thrived throughout his years at the school and graduated this past June.

PCWS fosters creativity, critical reasoning skills and a love of learning. Teachers are skilled, passionate, and engaging. The new building in Old Town is beautiful.

The rich use of story in the classroom facilitates learning and instilled my son with a love of books. He and his classmates were avid readers and would regularly share books and discuss their favorite series.

The school is a wonderful fit for families seeking hands-on learning, small class sizes and a nurturing environment. Highly recommend!

When we first came to the school, we knew nothing about Waldorf education. We were simply looking for schools in the area that offered lots of outdoor time and did not rely on screens or technology for teaching. We stumbled across PCWS, and it has been an incredible experience for our family. Our daughter thrives in this attentive, patient, and gentle environment. The school is often misunderstood as not being academic because it teaches children when they are developmentally ready rather than for specific results. However, alumni typically excel academically once they move on to other programs. My daughter's math skills are comparatively stronger than a lot of her peers that go to more traditional schools and she learned it all organically through Waldorf play.

This place is magical. My son was there for a year of pre-school. Teachers, staff and administrators are all exceptional and deeply care about the kids. You can probably find more expensive or elite preschools/elementary school, but you youll be hard pressed to find a better team or better adult:student ratio than at PCWS. The teachers/staff work at PCWS because they believe in the Waldorf teaching style and many have their own kids in the school. My son particularly loved the two days per week outdoors (forest days). He was happy to go to every day of PCWS in contrast to his previous preschool. The price tag will be a barrier for some families but they do offer scholarships.

This schools community is active and very welcoming. There are numerous opportunities to be involved that fit ones schedule. My son has been going here since pre-school. He has really been able to grow in his interests, encouraged in his curiosity, and he loves going to school.

I highly recommend the grades program at PCWS. Our child started at the school three years ago and, at the time, we didn't know much about Waldorf pedagogy. As a parent, what I've seen is that the teachers at PCWS have an extraordinary understanding of physical, academic, and emotional needs of the students and integrate that into all aspects of learning. Things like multiplication are taught while jumping rope and building manipulatives, so that math facts aren't just memorized, they are wholly understood. I can see that my child is learning perseverance, how to think creatively, make observations, ask questions, and solve problems - skills that aren't widely developed elsewhere. Even though we only have one child at the school, our whole family has enjoyed being part of the community.

Potomac Crescent is a special school and we are so grateful to have found it. The teachers are exceptionally dedicated to educating whole children. They are are very knowledgable about child development and think carefully about the lessons they present to children--how the they will support the children at their specific age. Most of the teachers at PCWS seem to have been with the school for a long time, and therefor bring a lot of wisdom about the Waldorf method.
We value that unstructured, child-initiated play is supported in the early childhood and kindergarten year, and that everyday children are spending time outdoors. For the grades, we value the school's commitment to teaching the important skill of handwriting before introducing computers.
Prior to the coronavirus, the school community was very vibrant with numerous events throughout the year, like the autumn festival or the winter carol sing-along. During the pandemic, the school has organized a number of virtual lectures to help connect the parent community and deepen our collective understanding of how children learn.
If you are looking for school that will teach your child important content in a memorable way, while also model for your child how to be a caring individual, consider PCWS.

I love the school. The teachers are well-qualified (and sometimes over-qualified) and passionate. We have two children in the school, and can't be more pleased.
Also I enjoy parent association events (bonfires, weekend camping trips, sing-alongs), educational opportunities (Waldorf education experts giving talks in the evenings, parent-teacher evenings learning about child development), and the beautiful school events like the Advent spiral garden and lantern walks.

The whole approach at Waldorf is to meet each child where he/she is at. They utilize, in all children, lots of movement, songs, and artwork, in delivering the curriculum. As long as the learning DIFFERENCES are that - the differences, they are embraced. The class sizes are small, and the teachers are very much interested in each student's whole development. The school does not have the resources to support DISABILITY, and the child will need external resources to address those challenges.

I would say that they are not quick to label the aggressor as "bully" too quickly, which is important to me. I believe it is important that the young children (preschool, K, and even first couple years in grades) do not have those labels. The teachers emphasize kindness in all aspects of the curriculum, and do clearly show children the acceptable boundaries of all sorts of behaviors but especially hurtful ones. Throughout the curriculum, the students are lead to become kind individuals.

It's a small school and simply does not have the resources to provide extensive support for those with learning disabilities. However, the small class size does allow for teachers to modify their approach to each child's specific learning patterns.

We've been parents in the school community for almost 7 years now, starting with Parent/Child classes. We were initially attracted to the play centered learning in early childhood and the focus on outdoor activity; we have stayed for the values and the way in which the pedagogical approach matches the development patterns of the children. We simply love the fact that the arts and physical activity are integral parts of the curriculum and are actually used as part of the tools for teaching fundamentals such as reading and mathematics. The icing on the cake is the outcome, a happy, resilient and insatiably curious child who enjoys school and loves to learn.

BEWARE. I put a deposit down for the parent/child class. I signed up for the required nelnet payment service and purchased the optional tuition insurance (in the case the child was unable to continue school due to health, family relocation, etc.). I called the day before the 1st tuition payment was scheduled to no answer. I left a message saying we had a last minute relocation, would be unable to attend school this fall, wanted to employ our tuition insurance and not be charged for the 1st half of the tuition payment ($500). I received no call back. I called 2 more times without a return call. I called again at the beginning of this month and spoke with the office. I was told: 1. I would not be receiving a refund for the deposit (which we expected) 2. I would not be receiving a refund of the $500 half payment, even though I gave notice months before school started and you are able to fill my daughters vacant spot with another applicant and collect their tuition 3. The tuition insurance policy cannot be used because we didn't attend school for 2 weeks ( which would be 2 classes). The situation sounds a lot like what we call in the legal world as "unjust enrichment."

Potomac Crescent is a hidden gem. This steadily growing Waldorf school offers a warm and home-like environment for children from age 2 to grade 3. We moved to Arlington for its public schools, but after experiencing this private school we kept our children here for the grades and couldn't be happier. Now fours years at PCWS with two kids, my only complaint is that they don't currently have space to add more grades! I love walking into the school and smelling fresh baked bread and apple crisp which the children and teachers have prepared together and will share as a snack. The community values food that is real and healthy. I love that children play outside regardless of rain, snow, or sunshine - there is rarely bad weather, just inappropriate clothing - bring your rain gear. There my children sing every day, create beautiful art, work with wood using real hand tools, bake, cook, and sew. Oh, but this is school, right? Yes, every morning the grades have main lesson where they work on reading, writing, and math skills. The art, music, and storytelling are often incorporated as part of the main lessons which are deeply internalized. A great mix of imagination and realness.
