This school isn't horrible but it's a far stretch from great. I've been here for a few years and not every teacher is good or enthusiastic about their job (there's actually quite a lot that aren't, unfortunately). Fights happen every now and then, and many students do not respect for each other so the social atmosphere is pretty toxic. Counselors also struggle to reply to emails if at all regardless of how important the matter is (it has caused me to miss some deadlines), and a lot of teachers don't really care if students do well or not since they place a heavier emphasis on it being the student's responsibility- making the classroom environment feel pretty unsupportive. Also, while it's not often, teachers here can be surprisingly petty too and take on a less professional demeanor at times. As for the workload, it can be tedious but it's usually not overwhelming in numbers. However, on some days, you can have multiple tests on the same day which makes things pretty stressful because it assumes students are actually loaded with free time outside of school to study for all of them, which isn't the case for many. The curriculum can also move very slow and it's not good for students way ahead academically. Overall, Annandale High school is quite below average in many ways.

I'm currently a junior and AHS is really good. I was worried because the reviews are always so bad but the school is great and the students are really nice. Great teachers who are very nice. I did track and I'm terrible but the coaches and team were so supportive. They have good communication about events and opportunities. I like the weekly newsletters. From what I can tell, the special education system is great too. I was a TA for a remedial/I have no idea classroom and the teacher and students were awesome. Mr. DeRose is good too, a nice guy. The workload isn''t bad either its just that you'll often have multiple tests on the same day.
Not a lot of violence. Actually, none at all this year. I can't remember any fights. Some vaping in bathrooms but it's definitely better than before. The stalls aren't super crowded now!
IB diploma is super hard but the teachers are very helpful and Ms. Bradshaw gives good advice. I wish there were better books in the library though.
The extracurricular are great! There's every club you could imagine, seriously. Even if there isn't one you want you can start one. I think it's pretty easy (?) lots of leadership opportunities either way

I swear, I've had so many great teachers. Especially this year.

Our daughter loves her teachers and the courses offered. Annandale coaches care about their athletes. The school does try to connect with the community.

Total chaos with current principal derose and his administration. Crowded classrooms, some with no heat or air, unsafe halls, bullying in cafeteria. Teachers care, some more than others, but some good ones have left and so many seem stressed out and unhappy. Feels like school is coming apart. So glad to be graduating this year. So sad my hs experience wrecked by covid.

The above teacher has no integrity what so ever instead of helping demoralize,

Posted: June 9, 2020

no one to talk to effectively, why do you have white staff when the school has only 16% white

Posted: June 9, 2020

teachers not willing to see students after classes, rush you are never there

Posted: June 9, 2020

we had the worst bullying experience that made me cry by the staff member

Posted: June 9, 2020

nightmare especially senior years I mean 12th grade the final when preparing for higher study

Posted: June 9, 2020

teachers are below average, put you down, and make your future less, discourage you depending on your race. there is a social study teacher who plays with boys and never helps you if you are a female student. There is so much to say about her but sensitive issue

Posted: September 26, 2019

there is many good and bad teachers but the overall experience ive had with all of mine were great

Posted: September 26, 2019

The school barely has school spirit and doesn't really focus on the students itself.

Posted: September 26, 2019

Staff is terrible especially security and office team, anyone that isn't a teacher

Posted: September 26, 2019

They make sure that everyone is treated equally with all rules

Posted: September 26, 2019

nothing about bullying, if it happens it happens there

Posted: September 26, 2019

Always depends on the teacher, some think homework is important, some dont

Posted: September 26, 2019

6/10 mainly as a student there i found that my freshman / sophmore year were so great but as the years went by school spirit was lost, the staff have gotten absolutely ridiculous, so many just bad things in the school itself and the rules they set, but the memories and friends and teachers you meet there do make up for it, but one great thing is that they are very diverse and treat everyone the same which is great

AHS offers the full IB program instead of AP so any low rankings based on AP scores or particiption are misleadingly low-AP tests were all taken elsewhere. Re equity: rates reflect refugees with limited and interrupted previous education. They are well served and catching up, but don't always make 10 years' progress in 4 . Honors and college prep at AHS is the equal of any school- they are not negatively impacted. The school is safe, orderly, well maintained, and most importantly, supportive and inclusive for all.

Our two sons went to school here and were well prepared for college. They were able to take advantage of the excellent IB program. One son went to the Universty of Florida, then UVA Law School. The other went to Stanford University and Harvard Law School. We appreciate the dedicated teachers they had at Annandale H S.

I have a rising senior and another who graduated from Annandale in 2016. The teachers and staff really care about the students. The school is one of the most diverse in the country and we feel very lucky our children were exposed to the diversity, as it is a huge benefit to them. Diversity, inclusion, acceptance, positive environment, real-world preparation, caring. Those are words I would use to describe Annandale High School.

Review of a parent: I've had two children go to AHS (currently one is a rising Senior). It's a wonderful school. The IB program is fantastic, and the school is very well run. My children have been exposed to diversity from the beginning of their education and it has only benefited them. The curriculum is very challenging and they are well-prepared for college.

This is my forth and last year at AHS and I love it! Its incredibly diverse but everybody gets along with each other (for the most part), the teachers are awesome and if you ask theyre always happy to help. The reviews on here that say its an awful school because they got kicked out are BS clearly you did something to get kicked out or get yourself in trouble dont put that on the school! I TA in student services and I can assure you all the Counselors work incredibly hard everyday for their students. Please dont rate this school down when you dont know it because if you've been to this school you would know just how amazing it is. Both my sisters went to Annandale before me and loved it just as much if not more.

Weary at first with all the chatter of those who do not truly know Annandale HS but pleasantly surprised! This school is a TRUE prep for the real world! Filled with wonderful real people and an excellent example of what our area is...Diversified! Every student gets a true chance in a sport or club and is able to build self worth with all the opportunities this school provides. Keep your kids busy in school, stay involved and you too, will be very happy.

This school is ridiculous, I've attended here for a full year and don't like this school at all. A teacher curses out his students and calls them names. He kicked me out one day (after getting cursed out and feeling horrible), for making a small paper order error. After this, I was sent to the office, and eventually was given detention. How is it that a school teacher can do such things and still get away with it (let alone the student having to get detention). This school is beyond ridiculous, It was only my second day there and that happened.
