The principle Consolla is a witch. She trespassed my son for knocking on the door to use the bathroom after school hours. Avoid this school at all costs.

We have 2 students at Fort Hunt. Both are in the Spanish Immersion program, and are thriving at the school. The teachers are fantastic, administration is attentive and engaged without being overbearing and the local community very welcoming and supportive of the school.

We understand that both the Principal and Assistant Principal are both leaving the school. Also, about 10-14 staff members have also left the school. Is the school still a project momentum school?

The principal is unresponsive. He does not respond to emails from parents offering their help in various ways to improve the school, offer enrichment, etc.
There is no communication from the administration regarding long - term substitute teachers. For example, when a teacher goes on maternity leave, your child will have a substitute for an undisclosed amount of time. If the original teacher does not return, the time your child has a substitute could be entirely unknown. Zero communication is provided.

I thought that there would be some interaction between the general ed students and the autism program students. There is none. It could be a great learning experience for all the students.

Disappointing. There is not much enthusiasm from the administration around the Spanish immersion program which is the cornerstone of the school. There are no school events that connect the classroom to the community. Your child will never sing a song with her class or perform a skit that the parents come to see.
Parents are really nice. But they are not active when it comes to improving the school from an academic/enrichment perspective. It would probably help if the principal answered emails from parents willing to volunteer their time and implement new programs. Yes, the PTA is active and puts on good, non-academic events.
The school also does not appear to recycle.

Kindness month is in April, but as far as my kids have told me and from what I've seen, it's simply a matter of seeing some posters about being kind in the hallways.

For anyone considering moving to this area, this is a really good, community-minded and effective school for children to learn, grow and be nurtured in. The PTA is very active, and every teacher is hard working and committed. The surrounding neighborhoods are also safe and beautiful, this was a discovery for us so close to DC and we’re delighted we moved here.

Excellent experience at Fort Hunt -we have the opportunity to transfer to another school based on testing, but my kids are staying at Fort Hunt for the diversity and more important benefits gained from being in the Spanish immersion program. The staff at Ft. Hunt are extremely proactive and helpful and I could not be more pleased with this school.

Hidden gem. The way great schools rates schools is based on quantitative indicators like test scores (which are known to favor white, privileged students) and misses qualitative indicators. This school is much better than the elitists at the rating agency can process.

A school's quality goes way beyond the standardized test scores. And unfortunately for this school it gets lower ratings because it's test scores are lower than the neighboring schools. There are plenty of reasons to account for this ( lower income children that are bussed in, top performers are moved out the school to attend the AAP at a neighboring school, and the school is home the special education program in the area). That being said this school offers so much more for children than most of the neighboring schools including the Spanish immersion program, a strong arts program, a very strong music program that all grades participate weekly, as well as choir and instrument instruction (strings starts in 3rd grade and band in 4th), after school enrichment programs, fleet foxes running program, tutoring, word masters, math olympiad, odyssey of the mind, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) program weekly for 3-5th grades. The students of this school are very diverse, which brings a richness to all of these kids experiences and prepares them for real world situations. On top of all those wonderful programs, this school has an amazing principal ( his child attends this school) is who totally dedicated to this school and fantastic teachers that love their job. I hope that in this wealthy and educated area, that people do not attempt to judge this school based on hearsay. My kids love their school and as parents we feel this is an excellent school.

I love the families and students at our school. Our new principal has really energized the school and engaged the students in learning. School started off with a bang as all the students who completed the summer reading program got to see the principal get slimed! My kids were thrilled and were eager to participate in all the reading programs offered.

We have enjoyed the PTA led Fleet Foxes Running Club, Wordmasters, After School Enrichment (pottery and sports) and Odyssey of the Mind.

Both my kids are in spanish immersion. However, even if you are not in immersion, conversational Spanish classes are offered to all students.

An exceptional year under the direction of our new principal. The PTA is extremely active and works well with the administration and faculty to further cultivate a positive learning environment for all students. I've been very pleased and impressed with the personal attention my children receive from their teachers. The Spanish immersion program is excellent. I was very skeptical of the program at first, but two years into the program, I am very happy to have my children in this challenging program.
One final testament to the improved environment at FHES. A significant majority of the raising 3rd grade student who qualified for Advance Academic Placement LVL 4 are choosing to stay at FHES instead of moving to a LVL 4 center.

Both of our kids are doing great. Good teachers/staff and an active, supportive PTA. The Spanish Immersion is challenging, and not for everyone, however.

It baffles my friends & family that we have such average ratings?!? We have a FANTASTIC new Principal with energized and motivated staff who really care about our students! Big effort to present higher level thinking in classrooms. My 3 children are thriving in the Spanish Partial Immersion Program and the arts programs. They could have gone to an AAP center but the diversity, Spanish and academics exceed our needs. Our Spanish FLES program bridges helps unite immersion and non-immersion students. There is also big emphasis on Music and Art: 1/3 of students are in band or strings (strings starts in 3rd grade here! LOVE that!), 1/6 of students join Chorus! High participation in Reflections Art Contest. I love how engaged and vibrant our PTA/parent volunteerism is! This brings loads of extra-curricular activities and events to our school: Spanish and English Spelling bees, Chess Club, National Geographic Bee, science and sports nights, Junior Great Books, Math Olympiad, Word Masters, Odyssey of the Mind, Fall and Spring running clubs with Fall fun run & Spring track meet, dances, family school picnic, spring auction, etc., etc. It's wonderful and gets better every year!!!

Ft. Hunt is a wonderful school! The teachers are so caring and supportive of the children and committed to giving them a top notch education. Parents are very involved with the school and my child thrived in the Spanish Immersion Program. If I was offered the chance to send my child to Ft. Hunt or a nearby school that was rated higher, I would choose Ft. Hunt. A good education and a good school experience are very important to me and I know my child is getting both at Ft. Hunt.

I cannot understand why this school does not get better ratings. There was definitely some strife between the previous leadership and teachers, but the quality of the education is excellent. This school provides more diversity than most of the other schools in the area and has the Spanish immersion program. The test scores may be lower than some of the schools nearby, but the closest school has the AAP program which certainly helps to inflate their scores. The other local school does not bus in children from the lower income areas, which may influence their test scores. I hope this school eventually gets the credit it deserves!

This is a great school in a great community. I am really proud to send my kids here and feel that they are learning in a rich thriving environment. I work full time and am so appreciative of so many volunteer parents that are able to contribute their time and energy. Its a great neighborhood school that is not reflected by this school rating.

Fort Hunt is a great school. It focuses on bilingual languages wich are English and Spanish. I like this school because it has an expanded library of more than 18,000 books.

My child has Autism and is non-verbal...he has made progress by leaps & bounds this year! My daughter will be participating in the Spanish program starting in 1st grade. Amazing office staff!

Again, the rating is not an accurate reflection of FHES. My children have had excellent teachers and the poor ones are no longer there. Their teachers provide great, experience rich in-class and at home assignments that help ensure the education/information "sticks". We are in the immersion program and am very pleased with the level of understanding and ability my kids have. The parent community is fantastic ... involved, helpful.

This rating makes Ft Hunt look worse than it is. Ft Hunt is a wonderful school. Parents are very involved, most of the teachers are caring and capable. Whenever I have contacted the administration or teachers concerning any issues/concerns, they have been highly responsive. We tried the Spanish immersion option, but it did not work for our kids, their math skills started to wane. This might be part of the problem with test scores. But in the non-Spanish track my kids have had some of THE best Math teachers we've ever encountered.

When I got back to VA after two years in a different country, I forgot almost all of my english. The formal principle took my brother and I under her wing and guided us through the school year. She put me in the ESOL program and introduced me to my current best friends.

Kindergarten and admin are wonderful! The campus has a lot of space. The neighborhood is also excellent.

Excellent school, teachers and a very active PTA. The school offers a Partial Spanish Immersion curriculum (math and science taught in spanish).
