We heard of Hollymead's positive reputation, but we have been disappointed. The curriculum and content are inferior to our experience in Fairfax County. Students are not expected nor encouraged to excel, and there is too much emphasis on the SOLs. There are both excellent and ineffective teachers. One child was punished multiple times for asking "too many" questions about class lessons. A previously very engaged student, he now knows never to ask questions in that teachers class. "Specials," primarily music and art, are high quality. Library and computer research resources are limited. Bullying occurs in every school. However, the response of the administration and many teachers at Hollymead is to deny it exists in the first place. One child experienced almost daily verbal and physical bullying from older kids, but the teachers saw nothing. Events that happened on the bus were captured on camera, and the driver and supervisor took immediate action. The administration continued to deny any events. If you have questions or problems, the first response from the administration is to lie hoping you will go away. When caught in the lie, they will stonewall you at every point.

Our daughter is in Special Ed and we LOVE it!!! The teachers are amazing. She is just soooo loved ... it makes me tear up whenever we pop in and see the support that surrounds her. This school also has a very good reputation locally. But I don't know much about it other than Special Education.

This school is amazing I love it. It feels almost like a second home to me and my brothers. All the teachers are really nice and supportive they give us tons of tips. This school is the highest quality of any school. They teach you about rumors and cyber stuff and even they teach you how to play nicely with others. Their music and art teachers both are amazing. Their physical education is perfect never could be better. Also their library is huge it is perfect I have been going here since kindergarten so did my seventh grade brother my little kindergartner brother too. I feel really sorry for those people who haven't been able to go to hollymead. But I'm mad at those who've insulated my school. The hornets will get you evil rude mean people, you can't hide from their wrath. Now I'm sorry people whom left after a year.

This is a great school. All of the teachers are caring and creative. I have 2 kids. One that is in 6th grade now, but attend K-5 and another that is in 2nd grade. I didn't see them teaching only SOL stuff. A lot of the work the kids bring home is advanced and thought-provoking. Also, I'm not sure what the other posters mean by a lack of after-school activities. This is an elementary school... what do they expect? There are clubs and an after school program. There are also numerous sports outside of the school for the children to participate in. I think there are some parents that will never be satisfied, but as far as Hollymead goes you can't do much better.

This school has been so good with our kids, I cannot say enough. My kids are younger (kindergarten, first grade) so issues like sports and extracurricular activities and SOLs have not yet been a part of our experience. For early childhood education, you will encounter some of the best teachers in the county at Hollymead. It is small enough there to feel like a family, and everyone knows the kids. I've been very, very happy.

The teachers are caring and top notch, the community is affluent with doting parents. However- as another parent said- they are teaching to the SOL. If you have a child that does not like sports or is lucky enough to have a parent at home to help them partake in the few after school activities, your child will not be challenged. In addition- my son experienced bullying- and while there is lip service to "zero tolerance" in essence unless you have "proof" the concept is there is something wrong socially with your child... i/e he/she does not "fit in" . I am now homeschooling with greater success.

This school has been a disappointment for us. We have been in two other school districts before this school and both have been better. The learning was better in both cases.
