My children attended Hayfield Elementary from K-6. A lot of the same teachers are still there working. The staff is caring and go above and beyond to help out students and parents. I would recommend Hayfield to anyone.

My daughter been in this school since 2nd grade she’s in 6 now the teachers go above and beyond to help the kids out.

For bully week our child had food thrown at her while wearing the suggested Anti-bully clothing for the day.

I love the school for learning. My kids have made many friends and feel included. Unfortunately I do not feel welcome with PTA. Over the past 2 years I’ve signed up to volunteer, get someone to watch my kids, show up and have been told I’m not needed after all. Then they turn and continue their conversation. New ideas have not been welcome. I’ve witnessed new ideas presented or ways to improve events and then the person get verbally jumped for “being negative” or how the volunteers work so hard and don’t deserve to be attacked. I’ve never seen anyone attack the way things are. I have seen constructive suggestions to improve and a willingness to help, but it’s shot down. I’ve even been willing to just work and not try to offer suggestions for improvement but when I show up to work my time, I’m not needed. One year I offered to be on the board and shared my abilities but was only offered jobs that don’t fit with my abilities. I don’t look like most of them, but my English is good. I’m not welcome, but I hear all the time how they need volunteers and help. I have even heard specific parents discussed for not volunteering. I wish the PTA was more inclusive with all parents from all cultures and backgrounds. For now I am generous to my kids’ teachers to be a support.
Also the new PTA website is not as easy to use and hard to sign up. The old one was nicer.

The schools keeps homework to the minimum allowing students time after school to spend with family, extracurricular activities, reading and just being kids.

I’m at the school at least once a week volunteering. Most of the parent complaints I’ve witnessed are actually deflecting for their kid’s poor behavior.
Class size is big, but that’s the county’s fault. I think the teachers and staff do an amazing job despite that. My kids are happy and enjoy their school.
I agree with th previous poster that PTA has gone downhill, but that is because of poor leadership and it’s parent run so it’s not the school’s fault.

Everytime I visit the school, I hear teachers and other yelling at the kids and leave feeling so depressed that my child is subjected to that every day. The cafeteria during lunchtime is awful since someone shouts over the intercom at the kids almost the entire time to 'be quiet.' That is one of the only times during the day that they have to socialize but they can hardly hear each other over the constant shouting intercom with frequent announcements along with the constant interjections to be quiet. Most of the teachers seem quite good and do seem to really care about their students, but I've also witnessed several teachers berating the kids to be quiet and stand still in lines after lunch is over and just hate to see that. ...not gentle reminders but really yelling. My child is an introvert and being yelled out all day just seems to deflate him. I really hate to see that. Unfortunately, I do understand that teachers may resort to shouting just to get their classes attention since their class sizes are so large. They are far too big to be effective learning environments. Maybe that is why the school ranking has gone down so much? The lower ranking appears specific to Hayfield since neighboring school's scores have remained consistent.

My daughter has been going to the school for two years now. The first year the student to teacher ratio was 16 to 1, and she had excellent teacher that school year. This year her teacher is ok and the student to teacher ratio 28 to 1. I spoke to the front office about it. They said, it was the norm by the Fairfax county. I was very bother by this since the previous year was better ratio and allow more productive to happen.

I’ve had kids at HES for the last 6 years. School is very respectful and sensitive to other cultures and religion. We are not in the majority in either and my kids have felt supported and loved. We love being given the option to participate in American holidays, but don’t feel excluded if my kids don’t want to. My kids are encouraged to share their culture and beliefs if they want. Everyone is included and welcomed. PTA has gone downhill this year, but that is run by parents so I don’t blame the school. Maybe it will be as good as other years next year.

It is clear the administration works as a team with the teachers and parents. They seem to enjoy their jobs and care about the kids.

My IEP student and my 504 student are well supported. It is clear that everyone works as a team with the parents and everyone wants to do what is needed to help the child. I’ve been in a school district where modifications were resented. Not here! Everyone wants what is best for the child.

I can’t say enough about how great the school is. The school spirit is strong. The kids are welcomed and love and each kid is encouraged to reach their highest individual potential and is celebrated.
Lots of kids from around the world so diverse ideas, traditions, experiences are here. This was nice as my kids have been Expat kids. Love the teachers and administration. It’s a very caring school. PTA is amazing and puts on a LOT of great events for the families.

They really care about the kids and it’s clear they want what’s best for the student. Expectations are clear academically and behaviorally. The teachers have a lot of school spirit which makes the kids excited to be there.

Our first year was awesome and I'm looking forward to the coming school year with my daughter in 2nd and my son starting K! The PTA is large and very involved. Staff are nice, helpful, and overall wonderful!

We have had a great experience at Hayfield ES. We will be sorry to leave this Summer. We have had one child there for 3 years and another one is completing their first year. Great Principal and Vice Principal. The teachers have been amazing with the kids and excellent communication between teachers and parents. We receive newsletters from the teachers about what is going on and many updates through the month. The PTA does a lot for the school. I have enjoyed being involved with them.

Love Hayfield Elementary! The principal, Ms. Lewis, has been very responsive with problems my children have had with bullies and other issues. The teachers have all been great. There is a lot of parent participation in this school, which makes it a great community. I highly recommend this school!

what an amazing school. Ms. L Joseph is an amazing teacher and she took time from her personal like to tutor my son in math. She was ALWAYS available if I had questions or concerns about my sons day to day school workload. If your child is lucky enough to get her, it will be the BEST learning experience they will every have ******

I love the teachers and staff. My kids are quite happy. Couldn't ask for a better place. PTA does a lot of great things. However, don't expect to get to help with PTA unless you are part of the "in crowd" (you can usually find them outside the school at pick up and drop off gossiping about those that aren't there). They happily took my dues. I've asked several times to help and have been told things like "we will let you know" but several events have come and gone and no chances to help. Maybe it's because I don't look like them? Not that big of a deal. I'll just bring my family and enjoy the events. Just felt I should give a little instead of constantly take.

The school is awesome. So helpful and supportive. I love how the parents are really involved and PTA does a great job. Teachers are great and you can see that they love their job.

We have been thrilled with this school for both of my children. My older son had an IEP and I was impressed with how organized and attentive the staff was (he no longer has an IEP currently). The schol has a small town school feel in a big metro area. The office staff is friendly as are the administration and teachers and school spirit abounds. I'm very pleased with the education my children are receiving.

I volunteer at this school and I find the school to be very exicited in it staff and also with the students. The school has many new on-line programs from IXL math, myown reading and also e-books. Great staff and great environment.

Don't be fooled by the score this school received. Yes, it looks great on paper, but that's about it. If you are concerned with your child getting a good education this is not the school for you. They are obsessed with testing; pre-tests, tests, standardized tests. I'm not sure when they actually teach, or how much time they actually devote to teaching versus preparing for the next test. They don't seem to want to help kids who have learning difficulties. Instead they just keep passing them along to the next grade. I'm sure there are some good teachers at this school. Unfortunately, out of the 4 teachers my kids have had only 1 was good. We've been in constant contact with the teachers and haven't gotten anywhere. Have even had meetings with the Assistant Principal, only to have it dumped back in our lap to deal with. But if your child fits nicely into the mold of the ideal public school student you'll be fine.

Hayfield Elem has provided the perfect environment for my sons. They made a lot of great friends (we're military). The whole community is so welcoming, but most important THIS school's faculty seems to put more time and effort with "sincerity" into the students and parents. It definitely shows in VA standard testing-ALL grade levels(3-6grd) passed well "above" the "state average". I'm really concerned with English/Reading which they scored over 90% (avg 80+%) and Math which they score above the State average consistently. I love that this school is NOT overcrowded. The principal is so actively involved. I always know what's going on via email and voice recordings. I like volunteering and was surprised at the huge volunteer appreciation party that the faculty put together for all volunteers. This is a GREAT school and I'm so glad we're a part of it!

Hayfield has some great teachers. I do believe that they do not provide enough help for the students that need it. Most of the time the school is a safe and happy environment. However in the 2010-2011 school year their was a fight in the classroom. Most of the test scores are average at best. I find many students to not read enough or only reading material suitable for 2nd or 3rd graders. Plenty of the students turn their projects in late or never. Along with that this comment made by a fellow student shocked me. "My mom said I have to get a C on my science project." These students are only trying to cruise through their homework instead of striving to learn and do better. They are not interested in enjoying their time learning. I find this school to be average and lacking spirit in the education department.
