This school really improved and the school has hired new teachers this year. The students here will be successful and graduate. I reccomend your child going here because the community is so supportive and the students are very kind.

The kids aren’t learning because they’re too busy having to deal with mistreatment, harassment, and bullying from peers/teachers. If your child is labeled in a negative way, they will allow your child to be bullied and mistreated by other students and teachers.

Most teachers are unsupportive, disrespectful, unprofessional and discouraging. If you bring it to the attention of admin, they will invalidate your experience, minimize the issue, target your child, retaliate, gaslight and completely disregard your concerns.

They are not beneath using other students and parents against each other to hide their incompetence and inconsistencies while covering up their lies and inadequacies.

Staff at this school are highly protective of their athletes even when they are unruly, disruptive, late, disrespectful, and bullying other students.

The drug use at this school is unbelievable. The exclusion and biased nature of many teachers at this school contribute to the poor mental health of the students. Again, if you bring it to the attention of admin, they will place a target on your child and begin to conduct random searches.

The diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are fake and simply an illusion. They only care about a certain demographic.

If your child has an IEP, forget this school all together. They don’t hire qualified and licensed teachers to support students with disabilities. Resources are not provided. They do the bare minimum. They do not encourage progression. They lump most kids with disabilities in the “bad” box instead of providing them with tools to be successful. If you hold them accountable for doing bare minimum, they retaliate and take it out on your child. The meetings are a box checker for them. They have no true concern to help your child if they struggle with a disability. In fact, students with disabilities are punished the most primarily because they rather not have to deal with them. They rather create narratives to get rid of them.

The only thing teachers are quick to do here is find a reason to get rid of your child because they lack the skills and ability to encourage, teach and develop students.

Rules are arbitrarily enforced. Self serving agendas mixed with a total lack of integrity and accountability from staff.

Avoid this school at all costs. Nothing but a bunch of lies and empty words from admin. Your child’s self esteem and mental health will diminish in this unsafe, untrusting and toxic environment.

I love my school! They offer lots of different classes for everyone's interests. We also have amazing sports teams, and the school has gotten better at organizing things. It's a great place to learn and have fun!

Hayfield secondary is a great diverse school for kids. Not only are they learning from Great teachers, but there learning with kids that look like them. There is multiple afterschool groups that support's each and every one of our kids unique interest. Yes there is fight's and problems that occur with students, but that is expected. I would recommend this school to any parent that is looking for a place for there children to learn.

My kid goes to Hayfield and so far I have no complaints. They have student from different backgrounds and perhaps because it is so large, the teachers or the administrative staff do not create a bond with the students and parents, which should improve. As for the rest, in my opinion, it is a very good school. It’s also very competitive in sports.

This school looks good from the outside and that's all there is. It's a travesty. Bullying goes on and on and on. Drugs, fights and nothing but talk from the administrators. Certain kids get away with anything but if one kid is a certain type, nothing will ever come their way. Not to speak of the corrupt sports teams where the same kind of kids make it. Rejection after rejection and again the administrators and so called coaches have excuses. You ask something, they are fake hurt and vehemently defend their nepotistic way. It's a chaotic school that screams Hawk pride while feeding on their young. Worst school by far. Blatant disregard of any kind of fairness while they claim to be so inclusive. An honor student goes to C- yet they advertise their academic programs that fail to address even the most basics in education. An outgoing kid is beaten into submission and anxiety with teachers standing by high fiving the perpetrators. An always athletic kid can't make any of the teams. The disconnect between their always empty words and slogans and propaganda and the reality of projecting fear, disregard, disrespect and exclusion is deafening and scary.

Some love to brag about the diversity, but they turn a blind eye to the inequity with test scores and minority students. They like to blame ESL kids, but that’s a small portion. They pat themselves on the back for donating to the Hawk Pantry instead of addressing the inequity issues. “Diversity” isn’t something embraced here. It’s just a badge to display.
Counselor is never available, even if you leave a note. Some teachers are great. Others are awful. Administration is TERRIBLE. Problems are ignored. If you bring an issue to the admin, they paint a target on your kid’s back. All of the sudden rules that are never enforced (dress code, bathroom pass, random bag search, etc) are suddenly enforced for YOUR kid only. My kid knows the school is not fair and to keep their nose clean so admin can never find a violation, but boy do they try!!! Bullying, drugs, fights and mental health are serious issues that are ignored. That’s what admin should focus on instead.

How many times must I ask for an IEP meeting before I get one? I’m in the double digits now! AVOID THIS SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD HAS AN IEP OR A 504!
Don’t get me started on the bullying! The only solution offered is to remove MY kid (away from their only friends) instead of the bully. Shouldn’t the offender be punished and not the victim?
Teachers are hit and miss. Many do not follow FCPS guidelines for minimum grades and weights. One of my kids classes only had 7 grades and it’s the second quarter.
Rules are arbitrarily enforced. My kid sends me videos (cell phones aren’t allowed, but some teachers allow it anyway). It’s crazy to see kids playing inappropriate music and dancing around during SOAR, kids fighting or kids looking up inappropriate things on their school computers.
My kid never has homework and some teachers refuse to follow my child’s IEP. My requests for meeting are ignored.
Can’t wait to PCS!

I got a DECENT education with honors and AP classes. Some teachers are great. Some are not so much. I’d say 75% prepared for college.
As one who experienced bullying first hand, it was rough. Tone deaf administration made it worse. I was born the way I am. Telling me not to be so “out there” about it instead of punishing the bully was bad. Teachers were pretty good and used correct pronouns, but regular parent volunteers were allowed to purposely not use correct pronouns and complaints about it led no where. When kids see parents do it, they feel they can do it which leads to more bullying. A vicious cycle. A change in leadership may help. COVID helped bc I got a break from the bullying for a year. Can’t wait to graduate.

My student keeps telling his teacher he doesn’t understand how to submit his online assignments the way she wants them (different from all other classes) but has yet to explain so he keeps getting late points taken off. Seems if a kid tells you over and over they don’t understand it would be decent to explain...

Completely useless! Starts at the top. A lot of lower admin have left because of issues. Discipline issues are not handled well at all. Only advantage of online is not having to deal with an incompetent principal who does not handle bullying. Even in the zoom meetings before school started the PTA advocate had to correct his bad information. Then in parent Facebook groups she explains the issues are his fault because he dropped the ball, didn’t give clear/accurate information, etc.

The only reason my child’s bullies stopped was they took it off campus (after a year on torture on campus) and we were able to pursue it legally.

Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say. There definitely needs to be more training for the administration on how to effectively address bullying. I’d say about 75% of my student’s teachers have been great. I thought everything was great until I had an issue that needed to be handled by an administrator. However, the administration is a mess. More training and/or some change ups are needed or it’s going to get worse.

Some teachers use their own online turn in for homework. I’ve stood over my student and watched them turn it in and then the teacher would claim it wasn’t turned in. Another teacher claimed work wasn’t turned in, but my student handed it to the teacher with the teacher’s grade on it. So the teacher had it, graded it, but didn’t put it in the computer several times. Some teachers assign homework but never grade it. This is discouraging when the student works hard on it and needs the points to boost their grade and then it simply isn’t graded. My student currently has over a 4.0, but that is only because we had to stay on top of some very ineffective and unorganized teachers.

Truly hit and miss here. Some have been outstanding and some have been total messes. Admin will not address issues with teachers. Admin should back their teachers, but not when the teacher is blatantly wrong with their behavior or lack of teaching.

I know of 3 specific people who have been repeatedly reported for bullying behavior. The only solution offered to victims was to remove the victim from the class or club. Victims are punished/blamed. Sometimes the bully is talked to. It doesn’t deter the bullying. If the victim is targeted again they are blamed for not wanting to change their schedule or for being too close to the bully’s table in the cafeteria, etc. I’m not sure if they truly know how to address bullying. Unfortunately the current approach gives the bully freedom to continue and the victims are given the choice to change their schedule or just put up with it. Either way, they know reporting it will lead to more problems for them.

Hayfield is an underrated school. The best parts about Hayfield are its diverse student body and strong school spirit. The academics are strong at the most advanced levels and there are many nationally-recognized clubs and sports at Hayfield.

The most underrated school and staff in Fairfax County! We were initially apprehensive about buying a house in this district due to the overall greatschools.org rating, but could not be more pleased! I would absolutely rate it a 9/10. Amazing, amazing, amazing faculty who care and invest in the students (they even come to support my kids at their extra-curricular activites), and tremendous academic and athletic opportunities for whatever you desire. The population is diverse, which is a significant strength, as it has helped our kids develop genuine life skills in learning how to bond, communicate, and appreciate differences in our society and has helped them become much better prepared for life in the real world.
100% recommend Hayfield!

My son is in 7th grade and so far the first year experience has been amazing. He is the Avid program and it has really helped with his overall curriculum. I love the school so far :)

So were do I begin....

First: the entire school is way understaffed. Too many kids fall through the cracks because of this.

Second: there is ZERO and I mean ZERO to bare minimum accountability for everything in this building. No consistency in initiatives, discipline, school rules, EVERYTHING.

Third: Discipline- what a joke; no consequences for delinquent and disruptive behavior whatsoever.

Fourth: If you're a parent of a child with and IEP my advice to you is to ASK QUESTIONS to your child's case manger, administrator, SPED department chair, and especially the SPED administrator.

I'm also sorry to say that the majority of the administration has really fallen hard as there is no true leadership and teamwork to make the school a better place. In addition, the majority of the teachers at this school are uncaring and highly unprofessional. And the counselors.... forget about it.

Parents: please support your child in everything in this school. The place is so big they cannot keep up every kid!

Our son has had amazing teachers at Hayfield, especially for his AP classes! His councelor and the administration were very helpful when needed making the college application process much easier. We love Hayfield!

Any issues my son has had, which have been few, have been addressed by his teachers and counselors quickly. They have plenty of opportunities during and after school for kids.

My daughter recently graduated from Hayfield, and we couldn't have been happier with her experiences there. The school is large but accommodating especially for students with special needs. She transitioned from almost complete isolation to actively enjoying and participating in many of the social events there at the school until her graduation including the dual enrollment option at NVCC in the 10th grade. Our experience has been that you get what you put into as far as involvement. The neighborhood is nice, clean, and safe compared to others in the area and there are so many ways for kids with varying interests to get and stay involved. Sure, there are some teachers who aren't on the same level as the superstars, but our experience has been overall very positive.

Very large school, 7th through 12 in same building. For the most part, middle schoolers are separate from the high schoolers. I don't like the block scheduling- seems that most of my son's teachers have a difficult time trading for a full 90 minutes and keep the students engaged. Also, when a teacher is absent, the sub gives a "time waster" assignment and they lose valuable teaching time.

I am one of the original alumni from Hayfield...class of '73. So sad to hear what happened to this school over the years since I left. I have such great memories of my time there. I was in awe of the place. When it opened in '69 it was a wonder to behold for sure. The biggest high school on the east coast for a while. The planetarium was amazing and the gym was HUGE. Great sports coaches and teams, and outstanding school spirit. I think I still have my Harvester yearbook. The teachers were great and really cared. I haven't even seen what the school looks like now but hopefully one day soon I will drive by and go down memory lane.

Hayfield is a nice, big school. The staff is very professional and the schedule is amazing. I've had a great experience at Hayfield Secondary and hope to create new memories with my friends and teachers! -Class of 2015 :)
