Facilities are outdated and poorly maintained, with frequent issues ranging from broken equipment to unsanitary bathrooms. The overall environment feels unwelcoming and demotivating. I would not recommend Washington Irving Middle School to any family seeking a positive and supportive educational experience.

Prisons have more freedom in the lunch then the kids do word to my mother

hey I'm a fellow student at Washington Irving middle. I'm a 8th grader that agrees with literally everyone that has reviewed. Like bro the school system is not safe like if you think of bringing your child here well good luck because their going to get bullied by some wannabees. and let me talk about the after school specialist. like holy she is strict. I just ask here a question and she looks at me like I insulted her whole blood line like she be side eyeing me from across the hall acting like i'm doing illegal stuff or something. And holy are assistant principle for 8th grade just flat out rude The 7th grade assistant principle is way better than her. Like the 8th grade principle talks to use like we are in jail. Like I just be looking into her office with some new kids parents and shes acting all imperialist. So I beg to anyone if you are trying to bring an young 7th grader or a 8th grader to this school like me. They are not going to like it. But the history teachers and science teachers are chill so don't hate them.

They should film a new season of the Orange is the New Black at this school. The school administration is horrible at communication and they act more like prison guards than teachers. Running in the hall, thats a shot, talking or socializing with friends thats a shot. There will be no fun on their watch. I get it when you have disrespectful, unruly kids but this administration is just brutal Bs.

Hi,Im an 8th grader here at Irving and let me just say,this school year has been horrible so far,lightspeed,yondr,and ehallpass.
I think its all very unnecessary because I wouldnt say here at Irving the kids are bad,of course theres gonna be a bad bunch of kids but I feel like there is very minimal bad kids. The teachers are pretty good although since last year theres been a lot of retirements. Im not a fan of some of the new teachers but alot of them are ok. The lunch I feel they randomly put together.Ive never seen the same thing twice and the food is kind of scary. But what I really want to talk about is the mistreatment of special needs students.Ive seen teachers being very rude to them and very impatient. They changed the schedules since last year and they are more strict this year,I dont like the new principal shes rude and makes us have assigned seats at LUNCH and the courtyard is closed this year,it used to be open for lunch and I wish they would open it up because the cafeteria is very very crowded. I also think they need to do a big renovation on the school the building is old,and not to long back they did a very big renovation at the local high school and it looks amazing. Small school and its overpopulated this year.

My experience is pretty good. The teachers are nice, but they can be boring per usual. This school offers a wide variety of elective which is very nice. It lacks in sports, because they just started middle school sports. It lacks in after school clubs, but they are free which is good. The school is actually really not good for you. The vegetables are usually mushy and watery. The food they have tastes bad, but all cafeteria food tastes bad. There have been no fights at this school this year which a shock for Irving. I like the schedule, which is 4 periods of class a day, which alternates every other day. Lightspeed is used which literally invades a students privacy. Also the school blocks random stuff on computers all the time. Overall this is actually pretty good.

Irving Middle School offers solid preparation in algebra and geometry but lacks in overall readiness for high school. While the student body is generally okay, instances of racism are concerning. It's a mixed experience with room for improvement. The staff at this school are the worst people I've ever seen at any school. The strict policies make it difficult for students to really enjoy attending and engage fully in their learning experience. Other than that, this school isn't the worst but I wouldn't recommend sending anyone here

My nephew is constantly bullied and beaten up at this school. He once saw many people v*ping in the bathrooms and said that nobody took him seriously. He said there are many wannabe gangsters in this school. I would highly recommend you stay away from this school.

Great school. Prepared both of my kids for high school very well. Amazing teachers and environment to learn. Some of these current student reviews seem fake, not sure what the agenda is but this school and WSHS are both amazing secondary schools and some of the best in FCPS.

I am a graduate from Irving and let me tell you,
It sucks.

1. There are many fights and I mean MANY, there is an area that students go to during Fridays called the plaza where people hang out and stuff but Last year (2021-2022) The eighth graders were out of control it literally got Irving students banned from certain places.

2. The amount of racism in this school is CRAZY.

3. The school lunches do not provide real nutrients, the cheese they use is literally plastic and does not make you full

4. Some teachers do not deserve to be teachers such as the Facs 1 7th grade teacher (They talked wrong about me PLUS had been racist to my friends)

5. This school made me get deeper into depression.

The only good thing about this school is the teachers who actually have a passion for learning, which is mostly the elective teachers that cause trouble)

The teachers at this school are somewhat decent and have made a good impact on my school career. If you asked me about one thing I learned in algebra I wouldnt be able to tell you anything though, they make us soak information and regurgitate it onto a digital test for letters that determine our value. The worst part about this school is the administration team, they will either do the bare minimum or do the absolute most when it isnt needed. My whole time at irving was hell because the administration team constantly followed me like little puppies around the school thinking I was selling drugs. I am an above average student with straight as. They have searched me multiple times without explanation and have found nothing, yet they would still persevere to find the massive amount of narcotics they believed I was distributing in middle school. While they were putting their effort into this, I had friends being beat, abused verbally and they did absolutely nothing for them. Now, for the safety at irving. There are fights pretty much 3 times a month at irving. There is this energy there that instigates hate and anger. Violence is promoted within irving, as if it brings you higher in the social ranking of the school.
Another problem I have with this school is the fact that they absolutely cripple you of your rights. Im not sure if I mentioned before. They have this thing called the Students rights and responsibilities(or s r and r) that they make you sign at the beginning of the school year. Literally signing away your rights on school grounds while creating a false sense of freedom. The administration team would try and exploit me in certain situations because they thought I didnt read the 67 page book they gave out. I got out of some pickles by now basic rights, and if you are going to this school I recommend that you know yours too. Dont let a middle school fool you with their little contract.

this is my first year of attending irving middle school and here's what i have to say:

1. the school lunches are very small and don't fill me up so I think the portions should be larger
2. some of the teachers actually care about your learning while others don't
3. i think there should be more field trips
4. the water should be free
5. fights happen very often (mostly in the plaza) and it's not ok
6. some students that I've accoutered are very racist and rude
7. i think there should be a vending machine because some people forget to bring a snack
8. the breakfast on fridays which they serve poptarts, often finish even though some buses haven't came yet which always happens to me

Fights are above average in this school, i cannot count how many times ive been threatened. the teachers are decent but some (facs teacher) get on my nerves a lot. but the good thing is that were being taught.

Irving is a wonderful school and my son has really enjoyed his first year of middle school. We are so glad we chose a smaller middle school experience for our kids. Irving has a great atmosphere and our child didn't experience any middle school drama. Our son had a great year and learned the new pace of learning with a lot of support from his teachers. I was also amazed by how much he learned and enjoyed the classes he took. Great school!

A school that cares about your kid, located within several tight knit communities. This school is very organized and efficient at preparing your child for the rigors of high school. Cannot say enough good things about it.

We are a military family, so I have the experience of my child having attended several other schools/districts previously. This school is top notch, and I'd have no hesitations recommending the school to anyone relocating to the area. Teachers have responded quickly to emails. Emailed progress reports are sent often, and there is always online access to your child's gradebook for each class. You can always know how your child is doing at any given time. During breaks such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, it was the school's position that those are truly periods of time for family, and no homework or projects were assigned to be completed over breaks. There are numerous free after school clubs and activities that appeal to many interests. There is a real sense of community at this school. Our child has not personally encountered or witnessed any bullying at the school.

The only negative I would point out is repeatedly not letting the kids go outside to play during what is called their Learn & Earn time. The weather would be sunny and in the 60's and the kids would have to stay in the gym to play. After a long winter primarily spent inside, kids really want to get outside and burn off energy.

Overall, the experience at Washington Irving Middle School has been very positive. Great school. Great teachers. Great kids.

I'm so glad I'm finally out of Irving Middle School. In seventh grade, I had the best year ever. Ms. Hofman was my math teacher and she made math fun and understandable. My Science, History, and English teachers were all excellent as well.
In 8th grade, I had a horrible experience. It got to the point where I didn't even want to go to school anymore. I was being bullied by one of my peers. This person repeatedly told me to go kill myself and just enjoyed making me miserable. The worst part is, my counselor (at the time) did nothing to fix the situation and neither did the assistant principal. So it continued to get worse. Verbal harassment became Physically harming me.
At one point, all of my friends my bus driver, my parents, even some of my teachers all got involved. Eventually the bullying stopped on the last day of school. 98% of experience at Irving was bad.

I am now going to be a sophomore in high school but I still want to tell y'all about my experience at Irving. I went both years. The teachers really push you to succeed and my 7th grade math teacher Ms. Hofman was the best teacher I've had in my whole school career! I had As the whole year and I used to suck in math. The rest of the 7th grade teachers are alright but she was the best! In 8th grade my best teacher was my science teacher Mr. Dailer. He prepared me for high school better than any of the other 8th grade teachers did for me. I did have an issue with one of my other 8th grade teachers of which I will not name. She was extremely rude to me and singled me out in front of my class. I am not a quiet person so I stood up for myself, she got offended and told my counselor who then told me to apologize. I refused. I was not a bad kid but I got accused of skipping twice during 8th grade year. I did not skip intentionally, I was comforting a friend and I got screamed at and ridiculed by one of the Spanish teachers. When the counselors found out they didn't have a privacy policy whatsoever. The kids there are alright, as long as you mind your own business was you won't have drama.

As a mitlitary family, we rely on websites like this one to help with areas/schools to move to, to ensure a great education for our children. With that said I must spread the news of this great school. My daughter has attended 7th grade at Irving this past year and we couldn't be more pleased! It is a large school with lots of students but the kids are divided up into colored teams that share a group of teachers for their core subjects. The school is very diverse with children who have lived here all their lives and many from all over the world. My daughter made many friends fast and loves all her teachers. The teachers send you updates on student grades weekly. Parents can also access student grades and assignments through "Blackboard" at anytime. Parent involvement is excellent. I would recommend this school to anyone.

Engineering classes in middle school!!! The teachers here rock. My son adored his tech education teachers. Even though there is always one teacher my didn't care for he always respected them. Highly recommend this school. Counseloers and principal are tops. My son excelled at this school, far better than his elementary school. Finance park and science field trips are highly anticipated by the students.

This school was the best when it came to fun teachers and great kids. Anyone can adjust here, since everyone has different personality. The schedule prepares you for high school schedule. Wednesday and Thursday are block days (1:30 min of class) They also let you take some high school classes. 8th grade teachers will push your maturity, and it will change. Every teacher in 8th grade has different rules, but honestly orange and white team teachers were a blast for me. Counselors pretty much suck, yet some will help you. Bullying here is rare unless you pick the wrong crowd. Learn and earn is great time to socialize. Learning here was just great.

Irving is a nice school with lots of diversity and many nice teachers. I went here all of seventh grade and I'm sad to have to be moving this summer. There are some issues with bullying but the school has a zero tolerance policy, so most issue are quickly resolved. The conselors are so nice and helpful! But the seventh grade assistant principal is mean and strict (and I've never gotten in trouble, so when i say that its not biased). They have a really uptight dress code (which you'll hear all about). But overall it was a nice experiance going there.

Washington Irving Middle School. I didn't like this school because it did nothing to prepare all of the kids for high school. At Irving, there are retakes on every test, and you can score a 100% on the retake. Also, they have "Work Completion" and this is where if you don't do your homework, you just sit in a room. This is no punishment what so ever. Some kids would just do no homework and just say it was easier to go to work completion. Irving needs to become stricter and make the courses much more challenging.

I was a student of WIMS for 2 quarters of seventh grade. We just moved and I absolutely loved WIMS. Everyone was so nice and there was none to slim amount of drama. My new school is horrible and I wish I could go back to Irving. If you want to choose a school, choose Irving!
