Worst school in Fairfax county, do not let your kids come here if you don't want them to be around a kid who threatened to shoot up the same school and get praised by the county for it just because they had "good behavior"

The energy that the school has throughout the day is not great, the principals are so mean they make learning not fun and they ruined my middle school years. Most of the teachers are fine not really any complaints there but really just the principals. I went in to middle school thinking I would have more freedom from what I had in elementary school but no, the first month of 7th and 8th grade we had to sit with our class and couldn’t turn around and face the table next to you. Matter of fact teachers had to walk us down like little kids and then pick us up when we were done eating to then take us back to class. This school was not safe there were a bunch of drugs and at one point we had a shooting threat again not safe environment and a place where I did not want to be also lots of fights happening in bathrooms when teachers don’t know this school needs more security and better principals until those two things are changed I don’t recommend this school. Also forgot to add if you ask teachers they would most likely say they need to get rid of the principals because they do not make the place safe and happy. 1/5 stars in the place do not recommend for new people moving to Fairfax.

Recently, there was a school fight, and all the teachers said was "If you have a video delete it NOW! Do no post it on social media you will get detention or suspended. Neither of the kids got suspended, or detention.

It’s a great school with lots of after school activities. If a student is eager to learn, he/she will always find the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills. Teachers are nice and very supportive.

It is a terrible school. A lot of the teachers are rude and bad stuff happens there. There is assault, sexual assault etc… The teachers and admin don't do anything about it. The only decently good thing about the school is that it is diverse, and some teachers there. Not many kids like going there and when 1-5 students do something bad, they discipline EVERYONE not just the kids who did it.

When political theater goes over teaching logic it is a sad day in this country.

Lanier (soon to be Kathrine Johnson) is honestly not a good school. The school culture is toxic because of the overly high prestigious paradigm and culture the administration cultivates. Because of this, both students and staff are miserable. The school tends to focus more on maintaining the status quo and looking good to the community rather than fostering a learning environment for students. Most of the teachers here do not give good instruction and expect the students to know everything before teaching the content. I would not recommend Lanier. I wouldn't even recommend having your child go through the Fairfax pyramid. Lots of questionable politics taking place in it.

I've been a teacher here for 6 of my 20 years of teaching. I don't ever want to leave. The staff and admin are the best I've ever worked with, and the students are awesome. The afterschool program is like none I've ever seen ANYWHERE - we have so many choices for students, there is no reason they can't find something they can enjoy! I love that we have different teams that address ESOL, SpEd, Avid, etc. As a professional, I'm home here. If my son could attend here, he would.

The teachers at this school teach very well and help their students stay on task. It is a wonderful school, and all the students are friendly and talented! As long as you stay on task and try your best, you will succeed in this school.

As a military family we chose to live in Northern Virginia among many options due to the quality of the schools. LMS proved to be very good ('11-'13)--with caveats. Strengths = diversity & quality of options in core, elective and extra-circular classes and activities. We were very happy with our son's 7th grade experience. He was appropriately challenged in all of his classes & truly enjoyed playing in the band. We felt like his teachers did an outstanding job helping him & his classmates transition from elementary school. We were not as pleased with his 8th grade year. After a successful 1st semester, we thoroughly briefed all of his teachers that he would require a watchful eye during my upcoming deployment. We expected some fluctuation in his grades. We did not expect to find out that our perma-honor roll student was failing several advanced classes on his midterm report (that's a red flag!). After conferring with the appropriate teachers & having our son draft his own "recovery plan", we expected more regular updates--and were completely surprised when he "relapsed" without further warning. Bottom line: great options, but in a big school, parents must stay on top!
