this school is so cool it has a wonderful staff, nice people , nice learning and more, my child has a nice time there

We have been extremely impressed and satisfied with MCES. Even from our first tour, the staff and faculty are truly happy to be there and go out of their way for parents and students. The Principals ability to know so many children/families by name is also above and beyond!

The school generally has an attitude of no take-home homework other than reading every day. Teachers provide plenty of practice in class when the students have the opportunity to ask questions and get support if needed rather than sending them home with busy work that just frustrates them. My eldest daughter went to a different school before Mason Crest was built and the daily homework struggles were epic and frustrating for parents and child, and I can see the difference in the girls' approach to learning and education.

Teachers are very communicative and available. I have been surprised by how many stay at the school for a long time. They are very good at meeting each child where they are and making sure that everyone has what they need to succeed. Each grade level forms a team to ensure that they can individualize for students and have cohesive lessons and approach to teaching.

I appreciate the way the school encourages students to care for one another and treat everyone with respect. They recognize good acts and intervene when necessary.

Yes. The leadership at this school has really worked to create a team-based environment (as noted above). From the time it opened the goal was to challenge each child at their own level. Whether that is a student that needs extra help just to stay at grade-level, or one who is gifted and needs extra challenges to stay engaged.

From personal experience I know that the staff is very helpful in this regard. I have a child who has diagnosed ADHD & Anxiety, but is also scoring above grade-level, which limits the school's hands. They have been amazing working with me to determine what is most helpful to address problems with concentration and panic attacks as well as testing anxiety. And helped my child learn how to advocate for herself when needed. They make sure that all students are included and treated with respect, regardless of special needs.

Bullying is tricky, especially at the elementary school level, as children aren't always the most reliable narrators. Teachers keep an eye an try to intervene before anything happens, but if they don't see something, they have been very responsive to me when I go to them with a concern. They try to use a variety of options to protect students who tend to be targets as well as addressing children who are doing the bullying and using teaching moments with the school counselors to help children learn how to better express themselves and not bully in the first place.

I cannot say enough good things about Mason Crest ES. First I'd like to point out that the test scores can be misleading. MCES has a high number of students coming from extremely difficult circumstances, both financially and otherwise. There are a high number of students who don't speak English. That can have a great impact on the overall test scores, but does not accurately reflect the quality of the school and teachers.

My daughters are very different from each other, and yet have both had wonderful experiences here. There are personal and interpersonal struggles at every school--it's part of how the children learn about working together and having relationships! But the staff at MCES works to nurture the children through the process so they learn and grow.

This stems from the incompetent administration. There is a clear lack of any follow-through on bullying issues.

The teachers at Mason Crest are great, but severely overworked. Which is why many are leaving. However, I am noticing that the replacement teachers seem to be younger and less experienced, which is probably why test scores are dismal here. The administration, however, is seriously lacking in any sort of professional. They are rude, uncaring, and if you're not a favorite parent, they won't make any effort for you or your children.

The principal and vice principal were engaging and honest. They went out of their way to make sure we were informed of our child's progress. What I liked is their assessment of where the child was in learning ability with respect to their peers.

This is the best elementary school I've seen in this area. The school actively tries to group kids by learning ability so they are challenged at their individual pace. By encouraging the child to reach his or her max potential, they give the kids an opportunity to excel at their pace.

Yes, they get both sides of the story and inform the parents. They create an environment to minimize or outright prevent bullying from occurring.

My children loved Masoncrest because the teachers really cared for them and challenged them to do better. I don't know why the ranking is so low but Masoncrest deserves a 8 or 9.

The school gives out enough homework to challenge the kids but no so much that they are stuck indoors all afternoon trying to complete it. The school has a good approach to homework.

The teachers paid attention to my kids. We met with each one and they kept us up to date on each child's progress and weaknesses. If the teachers thought the kids needed more of a challenge, they would notify us and make us part of the decision process. We never had a bad teacher at Masoncrest.

As a military spouse, it is difficult to know what a school will be like before choosing to send your kids there. We moved to the DC area a year ago, knowing no one at Mason Crest, and we continue to be amazed by our good luck in stumbling upon such a fantastic school. The 3 principals are always visible, know every student, and cultivate a professional, positive, and loving culture among their staff. The student population is diverse, which creates exactly the environment I want for my kids.

For the past year, I have been a substitute teacher at Mason Crest. At first, I was concerned that maybe it wouldn't be as amazing at I thought it was, once I saw 'behind the scenes.' But it has surpassed my expectations, and my kids and I have loved being there every day.

The teachers and wonderful support staff really do meet the needs of EVERY kid, and it's a privilege to be a part of this award-winning school.

We can't say enough good things about this school and are lucky our kids attend here. Mr. Butler, Ms. Kerr and the outstanding teachers at Mason Crest are wonderful and care about the kids so much. They also communicate well with the parents. 5 stars.

Strong academics, wonderful teachers that work as a team to best find the perfect fit for each child, and the administration is fantastic! Mr. Butler and Ms. Kerr are always out of their offices finding ways to engage students and are very personable and welcoming. The staff and educators make families feel like part of the team. This is truly a very special place and we are so happy and privileged to have our children attend here. There is a reason that everyone who works here is smiling all day long, they are supported and know how special a place this is.

This is a brand new school with excellent infrastructure and outstanding professionals. I'm very happy having Mason Crest Elementary in the heart of Annandale, VA. Keep up with the good work!

This school in only two years of existence is making a name for itself. It is one of the best schools in the area and having traveled extensively with my family I would say in the country! The teachers are fabulous! They take the team approach to helping all students. The PTO is welcoming and actively seeks support for the school. The office staff is as friendly as they come. They make you want to work there! It is a friendly and welcoming place and my older daughter who did not have the pleasure of attending Mason Crest says it is like Disney World for learning! To give this school a 5 would be a disservice! The Administrators Mrs. Kerr and Mr. Butler are extremely visable and are very willing to share their vision of Mason Crest and how it functions as what the call a professional learning community. We had friends move from private school to come here. Amazing Atmosphere to learn and thrive!

Absolutely the best. Brian Butler is a wonderful principal who is engaged and really cares about his students. He gave us a personal tour because we moved to the area just before the school year started. He knew the names of all the students we passed in hallways and classrooms. Front office is very helpful and friendly. Communication between teachers and parents works well. Our child loves to go to school every day. Needless to say, the school is brand new and thus they have the newest technology, great gym and library, as well as art, computer, and music rooms. So glad that our child can go to this great school.

Where do I start? The Administrators are simply the best! They know the students and call them by name, they care about and support the students outside of school, they expect excellence in their teachers, they support the PTO 100%, they support and address parents concerns in a timely manner, anti bullying atmosphere so all students feel safe and I can go on and on and on about how great they are. The teachers are much of the same, fantastic! The PTO is like no other; you'll want to get and be involved! This is where you want your children to go! GO MASON CREST TIGERS :)

Mason Crest is absolutely wonderful, not only in terms of strong academics, but also excellent teacher involvement, support and leadership of the outstanding Principal and Vice Principal, and amazing after school student and family events that celebrate learning and inspire a strong sense of community. This is a new school and it's amazing. The Principal is phenomenal, warm, kind hearted, energetic and talented. The teacher staff are mostly young, energetic and devoted. I'm so grateful that my kids studying here.
