As a current student at longfellow, I feel amazing. Have I gotten an F in several different classes before, maybe... But, I am a student in advanced academics. Honestly, it depends on which teachers you get, but most genuinely care about you and your grades. My counseler has also helped me through tough times. This school does have a rampant problem when it comes to racism and discrimination though. Students face barely any to no punishment for saying racist things and slurs.

I am a former student of this school and can tell you firsthand this school was awful. Although I had a few good teachers, most of the teachers there were either incompetent or had no desire to teach. My 7th grade science teacher didnt teach, they instead they sat at their desk going through emails the entire class, on the few occasions that they did bother to teach they stole slideshows from other teachers. In class we would only do projects about the Chesapeake Bay over and over again for months at a time. My 8th grade science teacher would yell instead of teaching and openly told all their students that he hated them and teaching by extension. The students at the school were bullies and in combination with the teachers created a hostile environment. Overall this school was detrimental to me and every other students mental health. I hope one day this school will change, but I doubt it ever will.

Longfellow Middle is a wonderful school. My daughter loves it and has had a great experience with all her 7th-grade teachers and the staff shes interacted with. Dr. Patrick is an excellent principal, and my daughter, who is Asian as well, has always felt supported here.

Weve seen the difference compared to her previous elementary school, where the teachers and principal seemed completely oblivious to the real problems. There, common sense seemed to be flipped upside down the good kids were blamed, and the kids causing trouble walked away as if nothing had happened. At Longfellow, its clear that the teachers and staff care deeply about creating a safe environment.

While I understand and agree with concerns about bullying, I dont blame the school at least in the past year, I dont have any concerns. My daughter stands up for herself and works with her teachers to address any bullying she encounters. I know the teachers do everything within their power to minimize these issues.

What concerns me more is that some of the kids who bully others might not be getting enough guidance at home. It has to be a two-way collaboration between home and school. Inappropriate language and negative behaviors have no place at school, and my daughter has seen how quickly teachers respond when these issues arise. But we have to wonder: how did these children learn these words and behaviors in the first place if not from home or social media?

Kids are innocent. When theyre exposed to these attitudes from a young age, they dont fully understand they just mimic the behavior because they think its cool. Its heartbreaking to see this happening.

One important piece of advice I always share with my daughter is to hang out with a good group of friends. Friends stand up for each other and help keep each other safe. Having supportive friends is so important because kids often spend more time at school with their peers than with their parents.

Im sorry to hear that your child has been affected by these mean behaviors. I hope all parents can step up and ensure their children arent bringing toxicity to school. It truly takes a village, and we all need to work together at home and at school to create an environment where every child can thrive.

My child came home the majority of the time extremely upset. This was due to many reasons. The student body, surprisingly for northern Virginia, promotes racism against all people from Asia and antisemitic things. These things were said over and over again through different insults. Also, the students say, in front of teachers, suicidal language, and the school does not discipline any children for it. For example, many students told my child to jump off a bridge or shoot themself. In addition, the school administration creates a hostile environment. For example, if the target reports the bully, then the bully gets talked to. However, the administrative staff doesn't do a good job of keeping it private of who reported the bully/bullies by dropping subtle hints. This causes the bully/bullies, who are usually popular, to tell everyone that the target is a snitch which makes the situation even worse. My child came home every day upset. We noticed behavioral changes in our child, such as less talking, not participating in class, grades slipping, and not participating in extra-curricular activities. I hope this review provides insight on to the types of things that goes on in the school and that could be prevented if teachers were paying attention to their class during work times instead of sitting down, stuck to their email.

Im a former staff member of LMS, and my child is a current student. Ive never worked alongside a more dedicated, caring, and professional staff. As a parent, the teachers communicate appropriately and are great at responding when I have questions. Additionally, the school administration, counselors, and other staff are always helpful and kind. My experience as both a teacher and a parent have been nothing short of amazing at LMS.

LMS is a horrible school. LMS does not care about the mental health of it's students.LMS's ridiculously early start time stresses students out. 2 years at LMS are miserable for students. LMS's test scores are not because of it's teachers. It is because of expensive programs and tutors outside of LMS. Last but not the least, one of LMS's 8th grade Science teachers does not care about teaching and talks to much. This teacher does not teach! This teacher expects students to understand everything that's being taught, though and doesn't prepare for test's.

I am a student at this school and am very disappointed in LMS. I've been bullied about my body and the teachers have done nothing about it so it still continues to happen. this school doesn't care about its students or the parents, only their grades.

I have had two students go through Longfellow now. My second is in High School and Longfellow prepared him really well for AP and Honors classes, as well as helping him find the extracurriculars he was interested in due to the extensive afterschool program at Longfellow. My younger child is in 7th and a very different type of kid. She has learning disabilities and has needed a 504 plan from the school. They have supported her and our family throughout this process in a really great way.

The teachers at Longfellow are dedicated to their students. My kids foreign language teacher reached out to her counselor when she was struggling in class. Her math teacher has helped her multiple times after school and offered to help as much as she needs. And her other teachers have offered support and understanding as she navigates a difficult diagnosis.

This is a really special school. It is demanding, certainly. But it actually prepares the kids for high school, and offers ways for kids to get help if they are struggling. I'm really happy we are part of this community.

I've had two kids here and overall it has been great, this school is far ahead of many private schools. The teachers are highly qualified and have excellent experience either in the classroom or in a related field. I have never waited more than 24 hours to receive a reply when I reach out to a teacher or counselor. My daughter is challenged but not overwhelmed. There is a wide range of electives and lots of choices for after-school clubs. We came from Haycock, and the diversity at Longfellow is better, although there are still very few low-income students. The downside is that it can be high-pressure, some of the kids in the AAP program are great and some are way overconfident. And the start time is painful, but it is the same as every other middle school in FCPS and the area, schools are going to start early. Honestly, I just wish we had more than two years at this school!

My daughter only attended here for part of one year, due to the pandemic, but overall the experience was very positive.
Highlights for me:
-- very international, well-traveled, articulate student population
-- lots of interesting opportunities, including a wide variety of sports and clubs
-- outstanding orchestra and band opportunities
-- a very responsive administrative and counseling team; especially since my daughter was joining in her 8th grade year; they had opportunities for her to meet other transfer students in a supportive, safe environment. Also she was placed in appropriate-level classrooms after a few weeks' observations by her teachers
-- appreciated that they placed students in "teams" to help make a large school feel smaller, and had fun team-building activities
-- an absolutely outstanding PTA with great speakers and great fundraisers (Frozen yogurt Fridays!!)

Cons: - the early morning start hour...was rough. But on the flipside they got out earlier, and, it's only for 2 years.
- my daughter did hate using MathSpace in math, because if you get an answer wrong, it adds more problems for you to do, which could end up taking waaaaayyy longer than the homework needed to do. Maybe they've resolved this issue with the online learning and having more tools available. On the flipside, she was very prepared for her high school math courses.

Geometry classes have a "Due Monday" assignment that is not aligned with curriculum, stresses the students out, solution is not ever explained by teacher, but assignment is counted as a test grade. It is an exercise in futility.

Teachers have no subject area knowledgability and obviously have no interest in student success. They are extremely rude to students and are often completely unqualified.

The LMS experience makes students feel hollowed out and unable to learn. The school's ludicrously early start time leaves students feeling stressed out and unable to learn. Those students who give effort and try to have a good experience are left worse off than those who don't care at all.

Extremely disappointed with the school. LMS cares more about test scores than the mental health of students. It is a miserable 2 years for most students. Most of the teacher are just ok. The excellent test scores come from expensive and time-consuming programs and tutors outside the school.

The school is good on academics and athletics and other things like that, with great teachers and classes that are suitable for the people taking them. The AA program is great, and all the classes really help you. However, there is a problem with discrimination in the school: some teachers will look down upon kids taking honors classes; there is always bullying around you, especially for the minorities, like race, sexual orientation, even short people; there's a strong sense that if you aren't rich, you aren't good enough; and then administrators and counselors pretend that these things don't exist. One of my friends was being harassed by a creep and the principal and counselor didn't even care until we mentioned the sexual harassment, and even then by the end five months had gone by and we reported him SIX times. I think it's sad that they all say that Longfellow doesn't have a problem with bullying. It doesn't mean that there isn't any bullying at the school, but that they all tolerate it. I don't know why they act like they care: we've watched this video on harassment five times, yet my friend still lived in fear everyday for five months. Also, many people at Longfellow, especially the boys, are homophobic. I know some people that come to school everyday and their first priority isn't learning, it's avoiding certain people and prying nothing bad will happen that day, so even though I've been treated well, other's haven't been.

This school sucks. There is too much homework and most of the teachers don't really care. Some teachers feel as if people of certain ethnicities are more intelligent or responsible than others and give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to who will be punished for certain acts. I've also had experiences where teachers have made it obvious that they prefer one gender above the other and their treatment of students reflected that. I think the ways most teachers teach are ineffective for people's who don't have time to go home and learn what they should have learned in class. If you have an array of extra curricular activities this school is not for you seeing as most of the teachers prefer a sink or swim method where they don't teach you in class, give you homework and then give you a test every once in a while.

I graduated from the class of 2015 and am very proud that I went here rather than Cooper.

I never witnessed bullying at Longfellow, nor did I witness (or even hear about) drugs.

Longfellow is very demanding, especially in the math department. Geometry is absolutely brutal for those who do not study. However, the math department is taught by mostly excellent teachers (vern).

After-school activities are phenomenal. Science Olympiad and Math Counts win states every year, and do well in nationals.

I hope that someone from Longfellow will try to intervene for the young people who are suffering as the result of bullying (see below). There is a major problem with bullying in the school and it is a result of the leadership and culture of this school. My child was bullied at Longfellow as a result my child got pulled into weekly session to help these kids to not be victimized. NOTHING was done to stop the bullies or call them out. It sent a message that something is wrong with the victims not the bullies. That sums up the attitude of the admin at this school. We used to pray on the way to school for God's protection every day because there was no one to stand up for my child each day , not teachers, not counselors, no one.

Longfellow isn't a good school at all. I have been bullied everyday for this whole year until last week when I brought a teacher in. I didn't want to go to school at all, despite 'loving' learning and having high grades. My grades started to slip. I failed an SOL. I am likely transferring next year, I can't deal with this anymore. The teachers are mainly rude, discriminate students because of their race, weight, sexual orientation, etc. The teachers at Longfellow listen to gossip and use it against you. I can't believe how much of a bad school this is. The teachers and administration are so obsessed with perfection; THEY'LL DO ANYTHING.

I am in seventh grade, and I attempted suicide twice after attending Longfellow. It is a horrible school, you are expected of so much and feel like you constantly have to be perfect. I am bullied on a daily basis and none of my teachers care at all. I have severe anxiety and no one does anything at all. My life is falling apart, and no one cares about your well-being, just you getting all A's.

I think Longfellow is an exceptional school. I am in 8th grade, and the classes are very challenging (all AA classes) , and the math course I am taking is taught extremely well by the best k-12 math teacher in the country. The orchestra is incredible, we placed 1st at a big competition last year. We play very challenging music that rivals High School and College orchestras. All in all, the level of academics is outstanding, and many of the teachers are quite frankly geniuses! An amazing school to go to, but make sure to take honors or AA classes, as they will provide a great challenge and unique ways to learn. Bullying is not much of a problem, but be wary of cyber bullying and gossip. To not get bullied you should be neat, but not excessive. You should be nice, friendly, and always smile, because the bullies like to pick on insecure kids. Incredible school, it will no doubt impact my future in a great way.

Longfellow Middle School is a great school. The classes are great and even the worst teachers teach everything you need to know. The music department is really awesome with the coolest teachers and great orchestras, bands, and choirs. They even offer guitar! LMS is a great school and I can't think of another school or any other place I would like to go to. Yes the hallways can be a bit crowded, but its not hard to navigate in them at all!

This is the worst prison a person can stay at for 7.5 hours. All the teacher are horrible. This school has high expectations and wont tolerate even if you're 2 seconds late to class, or even if you miss 1 question on a homework sheet.This school gives huge amounts of homework,torture. If i had one word to describe Longfellow, it would be prison.

Longfellow's test scores may be good, but the teachers grade incredibly low and will lower you high school GPA if you choose to take a high school course.

I am a student at Longfellow and it has been a good school for me, but for other kids it is a nightmare. I am taking all honors so that makes it easier popularity wise other than the constant grade comparing. For the kids who are taking some or no honors classes are looked down apon from the teachers, staff, and other kids. There is lots of bulling between kids ( especially with the girls ) but it is hidden so well that no one notices, or even if they do they just pretend that it never happened. Academically the school does very well and copes very well with the AAP parents getting mad that their children are in the same math class as the math honors kids, even though the AAP kids are taking algebra 1, but you gotta know the GT ( AAP ) parents. I like the school, just make sure that if your kids that are going to attend Longfellow that you put them in abercrombie or whatever is in style and put them in all honors, it will help ALOT.

My daughter is an eighth grader this year. Mostly, she has had a positive experience at LMS. She has made lots of new friends and has learned a lot from her mostly great teachers. She had has two teachers who did not measure up and the administration wasn't as helpful as they could have been in terms of addressing the problem or approving schedule changes, but what are you going to do? I guess take the good with the bad. The school itself is lovely, newly renovated, and the after school activities are great. There's a wide range of activities to choose from. For the most part, we can't complain. It's been a mostly positive experience.

Longfellow is terrible. I was bullied everyday and nobody did ANYTHING to stop it. I told the principal an the admin and they just sat and watched as my life fell apart. I was bullied for taking general ed classes I was called stupid at least twice a day. I hate it and had to transfer to Copper.

Longfellow is a great place for AAP or GT students, as well as other kids. They have extracurricular activities ranging from anime club, to rocketry (GO ROCKETRY!), to Dr. Who club, and Volleyball and other sports. They offer Honors, AA, and regular classes, and all of the classes I take are challenging. The teachers are nice, but the school has way too many kids for its size, even though it had a recent expansion. There is a lot of cultural diversity at LMS. Another thing I love is the music program. The band teachers are amazing, and work really hard, like all of the other teachers there. In a certain part of the school, there is a case showing all of the recent awards that our math team, band, Science Olympiad, and art kids have won. It's truly an amazing school.
