The sports and clubs here are pretty good and supporting, from my experience only a handful of teachers actually teach, motivate, help, and are there for you when you need it. if you want to take any languages, I wouldn't recommend French as the teacher, despite there being little work, she cannot teach well at all, disrespectful at times, and when you take a test and cant pronounce something right, it is because she teaches pronunciation once and never again. some admin here aren't helpful either. I was in obvious danger and was getting assaulted ON campus for months, but when I reported, they did absolutely nothing because the guy that was doing stuff "seemed to calmed down.". But, a lot of the students here are nice and respectful, look out for you, and more. Besides staff, I had a pretty good time here.

Mount Vernon High School receives some negative feedback, especially given the quality of schools in Northern Virginia and the expectations of parents, students, and the community that come from living in a great school district. However, I have had nothing but exceptional experiences with Mount Vernon. I believe it provides exceptional educational experiences, there are some very caring and talented teachers, and the recently hired Principal is a phenomenal communicator who really cares about the community. The physical building/infrastructure can definitely be improved, but I can't hold much of that against the people working here - these people care about the students, the families, and the experiences that prepare students for life.

This school is amazing! I got to have a diverse experience while pursuing advanced classes! The teachers are amazing and truly care about you as both a student and a person. Small class sizes helped me excel in academics and having success in college!

This school is HORRIBLE!!!!! Do NOT EVER send your children here. They will most likely get into all sorts of horrible things such as drugs, drinking, smoking, GANGS, and more. This school is absolutely the worst and the teachers are very disrespectful and rude to parents AND students. They don't care about the students in the school but the money. This school has test scores WAY below average and same as graduation rate/success. Graduates are failing crucial classes to succeed with there careers and this is all due to the things they were "taught" in high school. They have been trying for many years to get rates up but it CLEARLY hasn't been working. This school is one of the worst in the county.

Really diverse school that advocates for inclusion and for all students of all backgrounds. There is a club/activity for all students ranging from the arts to Championship winning teams.

I like the school for my kid. some parents complain about too much school work and some complain that the teachers are upset when the kids don't do their work. I have to say the school hasn't given my kid anything they cant handle. It is a large school. There are a lot of different students with different backgrounds. I think it adds to the appeal. Our kids are mixed and they seem to do just fine. There are some kids who's parents come from different countries that have trouble with the work, because English isn't their first language. my kid liked to help them out. he also got to learn a language that wasn't common. I thought the opportunity to pick up another language was good. Also my kid helping out others was a bonus.

My daughter liked the school, and she got into the college she wanted. she has a good handle on whats going on in the world. The school set her up for success.

It seems like a normal school. everyone gets along. the kids do well. They have AP as an option. I cant say anything bad about it.

Way too much homework is given to students for them to actually be able to learn what they are being taught. My daughter often has to spend up to three hours a day to keep up A's and B's because of this issue. She does not procrastinate her work, this is simply what the workload is.

Teachers here look down at students, they are not seen as people following their education. The biggest reason why students begin participating in bad behavior is because of how rude the teachers are. Some of them simply need to be fired.

Absolutely does not. Students are mistreated and results in them not taking any faculty seriously. Faculty also cannot be trusted with talking to students about their issues, and counselors are never available when they need to be.

Our child spent her K-through-8th grade years at catholic school. Initially, we were very hesitant to enroll our child at Mount Vernon High School. Thank goodness we took a chance on this school. The school's leadership is solid, the teachers are available to assist their students outside the classroom, and the students' behavior overall is of good character. We have found that the parents who have never had a child attend Mount Vernon, are the very individuals spreading negative and false information about the school. We, without hesitation, recommend considering this high school over private school; the education is equal if not better. Go Majors!

Excellent, My kids had a wonderful experience here. The students respects each other, and as for educations my kids were well prepared for college and were able to get into top notch schools . My daughter is in med school right now.

I'm utterly shocked that MVHS is rated as a 1. I graduated from MVHS a few years ago and now I'm an engineer. I can attribute my success to the staff at MV and semi-dedicated parents. Although I didn't see the point of going full IB, I did take multiple advanced classes that helped me critically think, explore and improve my community, and effectively communicate with others.

The academics were challenging, yet interesting. IB Anthropology, IB German (level 5), Anatomy (A&P) and Stats were my favorite classes. For freshman biology, I had to conduct a year long environmental scan of a local lake, do experiments, and write a 10 pg paper on my analysis. The teacher intended this to be 'hands off' so the student could learn how to problem solve, critically think and have long-term thinking. I hated that assignment but looking back, I see how beneficial it was.

They see potential in students and push them outside of their comfort zone to do assignments that challenge and expand their minds. I don't think I would have taken IB classes without the encouragement and support of the staff. I also think the diversity of the school helps the teachers better interact with students. I have never had a teacher at MV say I should take an easier class or had condescending tone when giving advice, whereas, in previous schools (outside the county) I had mostly remedial classes. I'm happy my parents moved because at MV they see students as individuals and really try to make us our best version of ourselves.

I absolutely loved that students come from all walks of life. Trailer park kids and yacht haven kids are friends, we have army brats and first/second generation immigrants that bring their language and culture. Its more 'real world' and not cookie cutter like other FCPS schools.

My daughter played two sports while at Mt. Vernon so we were concerned about balancing her time between sports and school work. We had a few rough nights early in the year, trying to figure out a schedule and how to balance it all but after that it wasn't a problem at all. She was not overwhelmed with homework but had the right amount to encourage practicing what she learned in school that day.

My daughter, unfortunately, only attended Mt. Vernon for her 9th grade year. We moved before her 10th grade year. We loved everything about Mt. Vernon. She was involved in sports and had wonderful experiences, especially with softball. Her teachers were great. Of course, like with any school she liked some teachers better than others but we were happy with all. The administrative staff was also wonderful. We really can't complain at all about the school. We all wish we could have stayed for her whole 4 years.

The teachers seem overwhelmed and in my experience all communicate via email every two weeks to give you a grade and feedback on assignments and test scores. I have had two children graduate from this school, we moved from another state here and I saw my children take a nose dive here. They became disinterested, did not do as well academically and didnot thrive. One child had an IEP and the school changed him from a standard diploma to an attendance diploma without consulting us or asking. We found out because we are proactive parents and repeatedly questioned schedule changes and demanded my son be placed back into his regular classes. At one point the meeting became so contentious we brought in an outside expert to evaluate the schools actions and the response was one administrative calling my ex husband to inquire as to my legal status because I speak with an accent. ( I was born a citizen so took offense to that) I quickly squashed that and had that person removed. It has been a struggle and not at all a positive experience and I am saddened by that. There were good moments but it felt like the staff selected who to encourage based on performance because they had such limited time. My kids are not sports minded or academics so they were left behind. That was sad.

Just a struggle to get teachers involved, and with one child with an IEP a struggle to get the school to not label him disabled and tell him he was disabled so he could graduate with a standard diploma. This was not their agenda not their plan and it was a yearly fight for the school to keep him on track to graduate with his class. with my daughter she just needs lots of encouragement and she did not get that and it was the same fight to get the teachers on board to help her succeed.

I am about to graduate in June..... I can tell you that I never liked this school. Freshman year I had a bad biology who missed so many days, and end up failing me for the year.... Sophomore year I had a mediocre geometry teacher who wasn't a good teacher and ended up failing that class, and our sols scores are joke. Since Freshman year they might of replaced half the math teachers, and English teachers. none of my English teachers I had Freshman, Sophomore years, junior year are there anymore. Now the principal removed 0s cause too many people where failing so now the lowest grade we can is a 53%

We have a freshman at Mt Vernon, were hesitant at first because of bad reviews, comments about the school. We are glad we decided to stay. Our child came from a Catholic middle school and feels very safe and happy in the new environment. The Principal seems to have the student's best interest on mind, has seniority, commands respect, and is very involved. Teachers, counselors, coaches and others have been very accessible and responsive. Students have a lot of extracurricular activities to choose from, including great athletics. All kids, no matter their race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status are encouraged to succeed. GREAT SCHOOL!

MVHS is probably the worst school in Fairfax County. For one thing, most of the teachers either don't care if a student understands something or not, hate MVHS as much as the students do, or are just plain rude. Students get in trouble for silly reasons. The counselors are barely there. When they are, they are always busy. The dress code is ridiculous, the principal walks around every morning searching for people with something on that she doesn't like. Ex) ripped jeans. It could be the tiniest hole, and they send them to AIA. They don't allow leggings, but do allow yoga pants. They are basically the same thing, some yoga pants girls wear are even more inappropriate than leggings. These students have to miss a whole day because of something "distracting" even though the student will be sitting for 90% of the day, for no one to pay attention to. But they allow students to wear full on costumes to school for no reason which is way more distracting than leggings, ripped jeans, a skirt, or shorts. Most girls want uniforms, instead of being embarrassed by a lady shouting out "DRESS CODE!" in the middle of the cafeteria, and grabbing a ruler to measure your skirt in front of everyone.

After looking at all of the parent,s reviews I have seen many low ratings. Before you make up your mind that Mount Vernon is a bad school, consider what you are about to read. All if not most of the reviews are by parents. PARENTS AREN'T THE ONES GOING TO SCHOOL. I am a student , a real freshman student and Mount Vernon is the best school I have ever been to. I now go to a school with a 5 star rating because of parents liking the school, although students don't like it very much. Since I have left my confidence has dropped, significantly.

As a military family with many years in DODEA schools where I served on the school board for many years, we are very disappointed in MTVHS. We thought MTVHS would be the right school for our child because of it's smaller size, other schools in F/FX County are huge. We were very wrong. This school is light years behind DODEA in every aspect. The sports program is bad, the arts program is poor...the musical program is a joke. Their IB Program is minimal in comparison to others. The admin seems to be clueless to the problems in the school, too. It is very diverse, which we like in a school, but the student social levels are very much a problem. The pep rallies and the basketball and football games are more like unto prison break outs with screaming out of control unattended rude students everywhere. School spirit does not mean vulgar rude behavior at such events. I have never seen a member of the admin try to control the students at these events and I attended every football game at MT

My daughter is a freshman in High School. she never failed a class till she step foot in Mount Vernon High School. Her teacher is always giving her a hard time. the Principal leadership is failing. she needs to hire better teachers.

Cannot say enough about this school (positive). Yes, there is a diverse student population, I enjoy that, as do my kids! Students, faculty and staff are very friendly and it's very cool to see the different students interacting. There is a top notch ROTC program, great sport programs, drama/other extra curricular activities, good parental involvement, and so far the teachers have been top notch!! I'm particularly impressed with the leadership and guidance departments, and how they truly support the teachers, students, and parents! For such a large student body, so many cultures and personalities (in the students and staff) it's certainly a fantastic school.

Let's try this again. We have only been at Mount Vernon for a year. My daughter came from a very small school and we were concerned about the size. My daughter also has a 504 education plan, another concern: would it be adhered to, would she fall through the cracks, would she fit it? I am THRILLED to report that we have had nothing but positive response and assistance in helping our child succeed through this transition, and she is thriving. We love the diverse population and the students and staff seem to be happy!

With the exception of 1 or 2 teachers over the course of our 4 years and 2 of 6 kids at Mount Vernon High School (and any issues with a teacher have been promptly and courteously handled appropriately) we could not be happier with the teachers and the counselors. As other reviewers have stated-there is a sincere interest in the individual student and and a genuine warm and caring staff from the front office on. We could not be more pleased!!

With the exception of one awful biology teacher, I have been happy with my daughter's teachers at Mount Vernon. She is being challenged in most classes, although some teachers have a hard time getting the classes under control from disrespectful students. This has made the learning environment difficult for my freshman.

Not a great school. I have two kids in this school, I have a freshman at this school and his teacher don't seem to care about him. His failing 2 classes, and he said Soar time doesn't seem to work because his teachers are failing half the class and all they do is busy work dong that time, and they don't even help him when he needs help. Graduation rates are low and not a good school.

Mount Vernon is an excellent school with excellent faculty. Very responsive to parents and truly dedicated to their students. My children had all been through elementary and middle school in private school, my oldest two through private high school. I am so much happier at Mount Vernon than I was with my oldest two boys private high school. Truly a team approach to education! Can't say enough about how truly pleased I am!
