I think this school is an amazing place and community! I am a former student of Waynewood elementary school! I loved how involved all the staff was! Especially my principal! I have created so many bonds and friendships at this school that I want to carry next year through high school. All the teachers I ever had were hands on and invested in my learning! The staff makes everyone feel included! There are always fun events that take place during the day or afterschool! Overall I think this school is a 10/10 experience!

I had much higher expectations for Waynewood Elementary School. Communication has been frustrating, concerns about academic progress have repeatedly felt minimized, and meaningful support seems reactive instead of proactive. When a child is clearly struggling and showing little progress over an extended period of time, families should not have to fight this hard to be heard.
There are some caring staff members, but overall the system feels more focused on checking boxes than truly helping students succeed. I would strongly encourage parents to stay heavily involved, document everything, and advocate early and often.

A Fort Hunt gem. What a fantastic school in a safe, charming area. Between living in Hollin Hall and attending this school, there isn’t a much better place for a kid to grow up so close to the city. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Waynewood, and I’m proud it’s a part of the community.

I have autism and my experience at this school was terrible there was little to none help with my disability way too many fights and at one point in time I had to sue the school for their mistreatment

This is a wonderful gem of a school, outstanding and enthusiastic teachers and staff, very active PTA that helps make the school community fun and strong. This school has all the charm of a small town with big city/suburban amenities and resources. My child is very happy at Waynewood.

We moved to the area because of the reputation of Waynewood Elementary and have since moved to private school becuase we were dissatisfied with our experience. The current principal is dismissive of both parental and teacher concerns and the school has lost the sense of community that made it so special under the previous principal. Bullying incidents are swept under the rug and the spring 2020 virtual learning experience required the school board to get involved to end the principal's bizarre practice of allowing teaching to be done in one classroom per grade, ending up with 160+ students in one Blackboard classroom.

Additionally there are teachers at the school who aggressively push politics and social issues on kids as young as 5, encouraging them to explore their gender identity and if they really feel like a boy/girl in kindergarten. There is a large number of families trying to leave Waynewood for Stratford Landing for AAP in 3rd grade becuase of the myriad of issues at Waynewood and that trend will likely continue.

It's been a joy to have our children attend Waynewood. This morning, we rode our bikes to school and it seemed like half of the neighborhood was also walking or riding to school. My daughter has completed 4 years at Waynewood and my son has completed 2 years. Almost all of their teachers have been excellent. The one "ok" teacher stands out among a sea of exceptional educators. Leadership is top notch - responsive to parents and communicates well, which has been critical during COVID. Both children had minor bullying situations last year and in both cases, the teacher's intervention was swift and effective. The new renovation is lovely. I wish that the Kiss and Ride line wasn't so long and the playground was bigger (while new, it's tiny for a school this size) - but those are minor annoyances. Overall, I'd highly recommend Waynewood.

It is a wonderful school. Kids will be kids everywhere and what nurturing we as parents provide emotionally and educationally as a family makes a difference in how they perform at school or engage with their peers. Kids are so young at this level that any nonsense they bring to the school is a reflection of what they see or deal with at home. Most unfortunate. I do not blame the teachers in any way. I empower them and I am grateful that they do everything they can to educate and mold. School has an excellent open door policy and the principal is very hands on just like the rest of the teachers.
For parents in general :)
Effective ways to deal with a bully would be not to keep your distance and take the abuse or complain but reach back. You like it or no is the fact. Teach your kids to be assertive but respectful. Stand up for themselves and understand the difference in consequences.

I'm impressed with the teachers and the parents in this school. Parents are encouraged to participate...and they do. It's fantastic. My kids are loving school and I like the atmosphere of the school. My kids are doing well in each subject and I feel like I have a good idea what's going on every week because communication is great plus I can volunteer in the classroom and help when they need it. Plus the PTA has some really fun programs that lets newcomers like my family join the community. The teachers are also kind and seem to really care about the students. So far my kids seem to be having a great experience.

Have read all the previous reviews. It is NOT hard for non-WW community kids to assimilate (moved here with daughter in 3rd grade - no issues; adopted two boys (K and 2nd grade aged) from overseas with NO English language skills AND learning disabilities - no problem). We live well outside WW. Assimilation complaints are idiotic. Supposed issues with diversity issues once kids go to Sandberg and WePo are also moronic. We have experienced no such troubles at Sandberg or WePo. To the contrary, my kids have accumulated dozens of friends from the Rt 1 Corridor. If you want additional diversity exposure join Gunston or LMV soccer, FHLL and other FHYAA sports or BSA/GSA. At WW itself the Special Ed, Speech Therapy, ESOL and Reading programs are outstanding. Staff generally have LONG tenure at the school. Mr. Meyer (principal) stands at the Conover corner every morning assisting the student crossing guards. Teachers maintain excellent comms with parents. Parent volunteers coordinate activities for every class room. Fields/playground are in pretty good shape. With 4 kids I currently have a consecutive 12 year history with WW, with 2 more years to go. Excellent school.

My family currently has three children enrolled at Waynewood Elementary. As a military family, we have seen a number of schools across the nation, and this is one of the best. It has all the ingredients for success: Great teachers, great administrators, great neighborhood of families with a common prioritization of the importance of our children's education.

Don't understand why some of you are so worried that children aren't prepared to meet the the "real" world, when children transfer to a middle school... Children aren't blind and they have enough exposure to real population of this area via sports, camp, rec center activities...Don't you worry about them adjusting to it! More important for this age group is to learn what ideal world should be like, how to be polite with others and take care of people and environment, with minimum expose to crime and violence. I believe this school raises great future generation, sensitive and kind to diversity and poor.

This school is like a facade. It's nearly all white. There was one Asian in my daughters class. I think the children are in shock when they are thrown into the fire of middle school with a much more diverse population. The parents further try to skirt the elephant in the room by continuing with AP classes in middle school and will do anything to insure that happens. It makes for a one dimensional child. I had two children (a son and a daughter) at Waynewood who came from a diverse advanced academic background, they found it academically boring (son) and socially full of drama (daughter). We opted for a diverse private school and haven't looked back.

Comments like the one below on April 3, 2012 have no place in the discussion. The school is either effective at teaching today's youth or it isn't. If you do not like the school, then leave. It really is that simple. So much for the desire to have a color blind society.

When you look at test scores by subgroup you will see that our school has no diversity if you didn't already notice by looking in the classroom. With the neighborhood resources available and the extremely active PTA, these test scores should be hovering the 100's. There is also a significant difference in scores between girls and boys. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to teach to an all white middle class group of kids without disabilities who's motivated parents can afford all the classroom amenities and tutors. These children will likely not be prepared for middle school when they meet their true peers and neighbors from Rt. 1 I'm surprised Great Schools gave Waynewood a 9.

As a mother of a current K student, I have been extremely impressed by WW so far. My son loves going to school and his teacher is truly second to none. At first I was a little worried about the larger class sizes (25 kids), but it is truly amazing how well run the classroom is. Lots of parental involvement. This school almost feels more like a collaboration with the parents, but not to the detriment of working parents (both my husband and I work). All in all, I am very pleased with the school.

We, too, have three children in Waynewood and have nothing but accolades for the administration and teaching staff. I agree that the class sizes are larger than any parent would like (in our experience @ 27 students per classroom), but this is a problem throughout Fairfax County Public Schools. Because a good number of the Waynewood teaching staff live in the area, they interact with students and their families outside a purely academic setting. This, in turn, fosters a sense of community and mutual accountability; I think this is the secret to Waynewood's enduring appeal.

We have three children and they all attend this lovely school. We do not live in the neighborhood, but most of our neighbors attend this school and to my knowledge, none have been "discriminated against" because they do not live in the waynewood neighborhood. It is academically solid and the teachers and staff are unsurpassed. We cannot say enough good things about Waynewood.

Waynewood is another well oiled machine. The PTA is amazing. The principal and vice princal are top notch administrators. The students are thriving. Students have a ton of extracurricular activities to choose from: sports, chess club, girl/boy scouts, Lego club, foreign languages, dance, etc...
