My son attended this school for a month and was in one of the enhanced autism classrooms. They didn’t even have a teacher available for the first day so we got stuck with an older retired substitute teacher who had never taught children that young. Needless to say they were unprepared. I pulled my son from this school a month into the school year because he came out to me with fingernail scratches on his arm to which the teacher nor the two aides could tell me what happened. I never got the opportunity to speak to the teachers and they didn’t respond to any emails. The staff was not empathetic and tried to protect the teacher and the aides. He is nonverbal and unable to tell me what happened and they completely took advantage of that! We sadly moved to Fairfax county for the supposedly “great schools” but I experience none of this greatness. I would not recommend if your child is special needs at all.

Seems to be more administrative personnel than teachers. Also seems to have a high turnover rate. School staff can feel unwelcoming and do not like parents to be involved. If you raise your concerns, your voice is unheard. Perhaps the board of education needs to look into this school and find out where all the money is going.

There is no homework and my son’s teacher told us to “…log into his apps if he needs to do more work.” My 3rd grader wasn’t told how to do multiplication tables because “…studies show that it causes anxiety.” Same with reading aloud. They take time from academics to “educate children on how to deal with their emotions and how to be more empathetic.” The directory sends out overwhelming emails and think they are good communicators… Nope, they aren’t. We are selling our home and leaving here this summer because of this school.

My son has attended this school for the last 3 years and is currently wrapping up 6th grade. I have nothing but positive feedback to share. Welcoming, inclusive, supportive and effective communication are the first things that come to mind. My son has a 504 care plan and both the counseling department & teachers have been considerate of all accommodations needed. They have gone above & beyond. We will miss the sense of community that Lane has fostered.

Overall, I am not impressed with the staff. The teachers and the principal do not give you a warm welcoming feeling. I sometimes feel like they don't want me to be too involved, so I won't ask questions. Also, I've witnessed a few behaviors that made me raise an eyebrow, when it comes to how some parents are treated and talked to over others. This school also needs to work on its policy and attitude for when parents enter the school to pick-up children or drop off for activities. Sometimes, the office staff are rude or harsh when asking you why you are there and others they let walk by. If I had the option, I would consider another school. It would be nice if the front office could work on their interpersonal skills. However, there is no shortage of "activities" and events for the kids and family- sometimes I feel like it's too many things going on.

I have a first grader and a fourth grader. The first graders get a thick packet of stuff that a parent has to explain and complete with the child. It doesn't seem to be just a reinforcement of what was learned in class. My fourth grader is always confused as to what is really due for math the next day. There has been a subtle improvement after talking to the teacher.

There seems to be a high turnover of teachers here. Lots of inexperienced and ineffective teachers; however, we did have some positive experiences. The principal does not place emphasis on the Gifted and Talented program as the teacher is only part-time and there has been a lot of turnover there, also. There is no designated workspace for the students as they are shifted around the building. We did have some positive experiences with some teachers, but the overall feeling at the school seems to be to cold and unwelcoming. Not the neighborhood school you might hope for when settling in the area. It appears emphasis is placed on special needs and low income students, which there are a lot of. We were happy to move out of the area and glad we did. The school/area are declining.

I love Lane Elementary! The staff are great and all the teachers my children have had are AWESOME! One of my children was below grade level and the teachers at Lane turned this around and now he is in the AAP! My girls love it and I strongly recommend this school.

After working in the public school system and having a child enrolled here, I can confirm I have never experienced a more unorganized administration or a snarkier staff (front office and teachers). I am so happy my child is not going here next year. I know it starts from the top down. I overheard the vice principal (I believe she just transferred to another school) bad mouth parents, as well as a member of the front office staff and two teachers. On the first day of school (2 years ago), I overheard a teacher say she hated when all the parents "were in the building and in the way" - I can confirm it has not improved in years. They don't even have the sense to be discreet. Choose another school if you have an option. Children deserve to be in a better environment.

I have had nothing but a great experience with my child the 4 years she has been at Lane. The staff, administration, and teachers are responsive and very helpful. Additionally, the administration likes to get to know the children and participates in various activities. Last year the principal and vice-principal agreed to be duct taped as part of a contest for the 2 classes producing the most Box Tops. Their attitude is refreshing. They are friendly, but are not push overs and do what needs to be done. I would highly recommend this school to anyone. My daughter has received a great education here.

The administration is a disaster at Lane. One indication of this is their teacher retention rate. Last summer they lost 20 teachers. Two other teachers told me privately that the reason they left and went to another county to teach was because of the administration at Lane. I've watched as the rating on this website has gone down over the years. We pulled one of our kids out of Lane after an experience with a teacher who was illiterate. She couldn't properly grade papers, she couldn't spell and she couldn't string together a sentence when she would email. It was embarrassing. Another issue we had was their response to bulling. We requested that the group of mean girls who bullied my daughter all year be broken up into different classes for the next school year. The administration responded that they would do their best to make sure that our daughter wasn't in the same class as these girls. That wasn't what we requested. We requested that the bullies be broken up so that other children wouldn't be bullied by them as well. The administration's answer was to simply displace the problem instead of addressing it. Not acceptable. The other issue we had was the way the teachers and administrators dressed. Once the weather turned warm, they were consumed with the dress code, sending home reminders and making comments to children who were dressed inappropriately. In addition to the few children who were not properly dressed, it was the teachers and principal who were inappropriately dressed. I was shocked to attend my child's strings concert and the principal was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. On a day where you know you are going to have to stand before parents and welcome them to a concert, to wear jeans and a t-shirt!? How can you set a good example for the children if you can't even come to school in appropriate clothing? Very disappointed in Lane Elementary. To think that we moved to Fairfax County because of the schools is sad.

The teachers at Lane do a very good job of explaining basic civic values to the kids without running afoul of political correctness. They just talk about right and wrong in a non-sectarian way. And they enforce the rules -- crucial to kids.

Our daughter has attended Lane since Kindergarten, and she's in 2nd grade. She has done extremely well at Lane. Teachers and staff really seem to care about the kids. Facility is always immaculate. Very involved PTA. We are very likely to move into the school district so we don't have to request a transfer renewal application to the County each year. The student body is diverse without being monolithic.

The majority of the teachers at Lane have gone back to school to earn their Masters degree in education. The teachers are innovative and strive for the success of their students. They are a tight knit community.

Lane is a diverse school in its students and staff. They are very up on the times. They focus on student creativity and success. All of the teachers integrate technology in their classrooms. The teachers are highly qualified and build wonderful relationships with their students.

Absolutely no diversity in the faculty despite the extremely diverse student body. Very little opportunities for physical activity and too much emphasis on test scores rather than instilling a love of learning at an early age. If your child starts his/her education in an environment where they're encouraged to love learning rather than having information drilled into their young brains, then be prepared for a very harsh transition.

Too much and typically on areas not covered in class. Follow Montgomery county. Homework is not helpful and in fact is discouraging to the average student. Particularly with the lack of recess and free play. These are still kids!!!

My children have had an excellent experience at Lane. They have had very supportive and responsive teachers every year. The administration has been inclusive, open and approachable. We initially considered a private school for our children, but we have been thrilled that we decided to enroll at Lane.

I have a first grader at Lane Elementary. I am very happy with the school in general. In my experience the teacher's are great at communicating, my child feels safe and happy at school, and the after school activities offered onsite (I.e. all sports, running club, zumba, karate, and others) are fantastic. Kingstowne is a well kept area and very convenient. I recommend Lane Elementary School, and residing in Kingstowne.

Overall we have had a positive experience at this school. There is good school spirit and the students seem to take pride in the school. The only problem we have had is with the lack of recess and inadequate PE experience. The children need more physical activity!

My daughter is in her first year at Kindergarten at Lane. We have been so pleased with her wonderful teacher and aide. They are caring, organized and supportive with the class. My daughter just loves them and has a big smile every time she sees her classmates. Lane is on the ball with learning, discipline and creatively mixing fun and learning during the day. The teachers and Administrative team are very approachable and helpful. The PTA has great after school activities for the kids and parents. We feel very lucky we are at Lane!

This is our first year at Lane Elementary and we like the school very much. Our son joined in January and he is a much happier child since. He loves his teacher and his school and so do we. Due to work schedule we can only participate in a limited number of activities, but the PTA seems very involved and there for the children and their teachers. So far we are happy with his academic accomplishments and challenges, we were impressed with some of the projects that they are assigned for homework, projects that involve a lot of research and also parent support (known as Family Projects). We see our child grow every day and for a first grader we consider that he is doing very well. We highly recommend this school.

Amazing to be a parent with a kindergartner there. He has troubles anxiety with new surroundings and they make it such an easy transition for us. They go the extra mile to make sure your fears and worries are settled. Great learning environment. our teacher implemented a behavior plan for him in the classroom to award good behavior which turned him around 180 degrees on focus, attention, listening skills and responsibility for owns actions and things. He's incredibly smart, reading 2nd grade level and moved him into a reading class that challenged him rather then being bored with what they were doing. I'm also on the PTA board and they really care about their school and their kids. They have amazing fund raisers. My son is doing very well. I'm proud to be a Lane lion.

This is our second year at Lane Elementary, and we are SO HAPPY to be here! I have two children at Lane. My first grade son is thriving, after a rocky start. When he struggled in Kindergarten to adapt to the our move to Alexandria, to the schedule and the expectations, we found the support of Mrs. Contreras (the principal), Ms. Holtzman (the school counselor) and Ms. Reynolds to go ABOVE and beyond to ensure that our son had a positive school experience. This year, in first grade, he is thriving in all areas! He has asked if he can stay at Lane FOREVER! It's a bright, happy school, with amazing teachers, administration, and the most active and welcoming PTA that you could imagine. We had NO trouble integrating into this community. My daughter, a Kindergartener, is reading, writing, and thriving with her teacher. The class size is big - but teachers really do set boundaries early on, and the responsive classroom style teaches respect and kindness to peers. 5 stars, all around.

This is our second year at Lane and we couldn't be happier!! Our son is thriving and exceeding expectations in reading and math. His teachers have made sure to keep challenging him to help him grow. They have a wonderful extracurricular activities and programs...our son has done sports and engineering. Mrs contreras is a fantastic principal and under her leadership the staff is exampling school spirit. Our son is so proud to be a Lane lion and we will be sad to leave this school when we move in the summer.

My children are at Lane Elementary, and we love it! The teachers know their students well and are always available via e-mail or for a quick chat. The additional programs that Lane offers (such as band and after school programs) along with the dedication to extracurricular activities (such as gym, library time, art, music and computer education) is great. The PTA at this school is fantastic and raises much needed funds through fun events --- and the Principal/Vice Princ. and many teachers attend the PTA meetings.

Lane is a wonderful school where the staff as well as teaching staff are great! The school has state of the art equipment making the learning environment that much better. The PTA is awesome in always having something set up to generate money for the school and the parents involvement is wonderful. All the schools in the area are great. But what i like that stood out most about Lane is the administrative office. From the Principal to the Nurse, everyone was very warm and helpful. When the nucleus of the school is impressive that feeds throughout the entire body. I have a 3rd grader and a 1st grade at Lane. They both love the school. And many of the teachers call them personally by name just from knowing them in the hall.

We Love Lane! I have two children that attend Lane Elementary, and they have enjoyed every minute! I like the way the teachers care for my children and keep me in the 'loop' about their progress. They have an open-door policy and welcome parent helpers and volunteers. My children look forward to the educational field trips and I like the way the trips are connected to their learning. I looked at several schools in the area before moving into this cluster. I wanted a school with diversity, small class size, an acitvie PTA and great leadership. I'm happy to say, I've found all of these qualities at Lane!!

We moved here mid-school yea, our daughter is in 6th grade and the transaction has been rather seamless for her. The faculty and kids have been wonderful in welcoming her and helping her transition to their structure. The one issue my daughter did encounter with another child, was handled quickly and professionally by the teacher, and I am happy to say no other incidences have occurred since. Very happy with Lane Elementary.

I am really happy with Lane so far. It is such a great environment, both from the inside with caring teachers and administration and outside with parents who really talk to one another and watch out for one another. There really seems to be a community here, with parents very willing to be involved and PTA and school events to help build that community feel.

My kids & I love Lane ES. My oldest came from another school, and he compare the 2 and says that Lane teachers' always have an smile on their face, people who works at the school is friendly, etc. Their worse fear is to stop going to Lane if we decided to move. Teachers are well qualified, homework, communication is excellent. I wish they could more field trips & outside activities but I guess this situation is the same across the board in Fairfax county. PTA has good fundraising but should look for new Tecniques to engaged Lane families to do/assist to more activities. Overall Staff, teachers, Directors, are great and well train for their position.

Lane is an amazing school! The teachers are dedicated to the kids and to providing a rich education to each and every one of them. My children love going to school everyday and have developed loving and trusting relationships with their teachers. I have been disappointed by the lack of involvement of many parents with the PTA, but the PTA is an incredible source of support to this school.

The community at Lane is very engaged - the teachers, administrators and parents are all involved in the successful education of our children. It's a very positive atmosphere and the children benefit from the involvement of so many different people from different backgrounds. The children also get to benefit from a variety of specials throughout the week - library, computer lab, music, PE, art - as well as a variety of extracurricular activities the PTA sponsors. Our experience at Lane has been very positive! And, the SACC program there is also great!

I have a third grader and a Kindergarten student at Anthony T Lane Elementary. I am in my 4th year at Lane and absolutely love the school. We have a fabulous Principal who is a parent as well which keeps her balanced between the parents and the administration. Our Assistant Principals also bring fabulous leadership to our school. We have fabulous PTA run after school programs and an unbelievable curriculum as well. Our Art and Music programs keep our kids well rounded. Our PTA is fantastic and family oriented. I feel lucky that we are in the Lane district lines and feel my kids are blossoming because of the education they are receiving.

The staff and the administration at this school are top notch. The demographic mix of students and the multicultural exposure my son receives at Lane is an added bonus for my son. In addition, the PTA is very involved with the school and raises slot of money to assist the school in getting items on teachers wish lists.

Lane has an incredibly diverse population of students, coming from countries all over the world. This diversity is used as an advantage by the teachers who emphasize collaboration and caring. Furthermore, students learn about responsibility to their community through integration of special needs students in the classrooms, attention to the environment, and pride in their school property. Principal Contreras is engaged in long-term planning to improve the school property through installation of art and raised gardens, which will be used in teaching projects. Parents are heavily involved in the PTA, raising thousands of dollars each year and providing opportunities for professional development of teachers, purchases of technology, and extra-curricular activities of students.

I have two children at Lane - 2nd grade and Kindergarten - and we love it! My son is in the multiage program which is amazing. I believe Lane may be one of the few schools in the area that has this multiage program avaialble. Our principal is in her second year at Lane and is terrific. The PTA is very engaged and has been able to provide wonderful enhancements to our school over the last few years.

My son attended Lane for Kindergarden (we moved because of a work transfer to southern VA). I can't say enough about the positive experiences he had with the teachers, staff, and other parents. His teacher, Mrs. Ableman, provided a caring, yet structured, environment which helped him blossom into a focused, enthusiastic learner. The PTA supported many after school sports and activities. We love our new school, but we miss the Lane community.

I have two sons that attend Lane Elementary and we are extremely happy with this school. The teachers are amazing, they really care about the students academic growth and overall learning experience. From our experience at Lane, the teachers are very well versed, poised, and have a great attitute. Having a positive teacher makes all the difference to your child! The adminstrators and counselors are extremely communicative with parents if there are any issues that need to be dealt with. They also take great attention and consideration to place your child with a teacher that they feel is the best fit. Overall, a very awesome school.

When we moved here, we discovered the curriculum is actually behind compared to our previous school. Each grade level curriculum tends to teach toward the SOP testing required for that grade. Therefore, other subjects such as science seem to be neglected to an extent. This is not necessarily unique to this school system; unfortunately, this is commonplace due to new federal standards. The staff is nice, rules are strict as previously mentioned, and the facility is clean and appropriate for the number of students enrolled. . I do not understand why every Monday is a half day in addition to teacher work days and 'student holidays' that are unique to Fairfax County. The response is always teacher collaboration but my children do not change classrooms or teachers except for specials. This is very difficult to accommodate with schedules of working parents.

I remember attending this school during my 4th and 5th grade years. I enjoyed it a lot and loved the diversity back then. I am currently a freshman in high school but Lane had to be one of my favorite Elementary schools.

We are a military family, and I have a child in first grade at Lane. The school has been very good. Communication is great between the school, PTA, and parents. It can be quite strict; however my son does not complain. I have heard this comment from other parents (military) and students, and we have seen a diverse group of schools moving around a lot. It is strict, but I don't think it's detrimental. The after school programs and classes are great. They are diverse and so nice to have as an option. PTA is great, but not well attended..this school could be even more awesome if parents would put more effort in...it seems done by a few. The building is nice, bright and kept very clean. Student lunches are good, and students seem to have a good variety of outside time, art, music, and PE. The teachers seem focused and work together well. We have a new principal this year (Mr. Nocco who left was very well loved) and she seems really great. I am very happy so far, and I love the surrounding Kingstowne area.

What a blessing! Ms. Gnazzo is a phenomenal special education teacher. My child is diagnosed with autism and ADHD. The last school he was enrolled in was like a glorified day care. He didn t learn anything; he wasn t being taught anything. And he had multiple behavioral problems. He didn t meet any of his previous IEP goals and they told us he d never learn his alphabet or read. Being with Ms. Gnazzo has been a success for him. He has no behavioral difficulties in school and he s learning. She knows how to manage her classroom, how to keep kids motivated, how to teach them, and makes it fun! He loves going to school! Ms. Gnazzo has challenged him and taught him his alphabet, not only so that he recognizes it, but he is writing his letters. He cannot read just yet, but I feel there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Some good stuff and some bad, the teachers are SUPER strict, but that keeps the kids in line.... but i think your kids are lying some times because your revews are (mostly) the oppisite of what i know because im a STUDENT here at lane.

My son attended Lane for Kindergarten and is currently in first grade. This school has been amazing in providing a great curriculum. The staff here are very friendly and I have been able to reach out to the teachers when needed.

Both of my kids have attended here the last 1.5 years. They have had excellent teachers and a strong academic curriculum. The PTA is very active and there are lots of after school activities (math night, International night) etc. Office staff is friendly and I enjoy volunteering in the classroom. School leadership is excellent and approachable. Great opportunities for extended learning for those who need a more challenging curriculum. The school is very diverse and and I'm glad that my kids have the opportunity to experience different cultures.

My daughter is starting 4th grade and has attended Lane since kindergarten. I couldn't be happier with this school. Her teachers have been fantastic and they're always responsive to my emails or phone calls. They pride themselves on providing extra assistance in a fun way (i.e., "Math Night"), and on developing outstanding after school programs. Way to go, Lane!

Moved here the middle of my son's 5th grade year. The teachers, students, and administration welcomed us into the Lane family. We are very excited about 6th grade so far. The communication between the school and the parents is more than I have seen at any of the other 4 schools my son has attended.

This school embraces it's diversity with a well attended International Night each year. There are also a lot of military children at this school which is a plus and minus. It's a plus if you are a military family. It can be a negative if you are not a military family because you have to say good bye to close friends every 2-4 years. Academics are geared to the SOLs. This is not unique in Fairfax County. This school also uses the Interactive Notebook as a teaching tool. From what I've seen this isn't unique in Fairfax County either. Unfortunately, the Interactive Notebook isn't very interactive with cutting, pasting and filling in blanks. I suppose it could be used as a resource to back up lessons but it appears it is used as the primary way to teach toward the SOL goals. Although "communication" is part of the school's motto, it has slipped considerably this academic year. Weekly e-mails are inconsistent at best and not timely. The school also fails to take advantage of Fairfax County's media outreach (Media Tips) to emphasize positives (a successful International Night for example). The loss of an excellent Assistant Principal is definitely felt this year.
