They have securely securely tracked you at home. Anything will get flagged. They blocked educational games. There's almost nothing to do. The Chromebooks are laggy with four ram and a processor from 2001 The teachers are good but the kids are brats. I don't even remember even seeing my principal. There's three fights in the first week of school.

Alexandria schools are bad. My son is LGBTQ and he likes it, but also knows it’s a really bad school. All the schools in Alexandria are overwhelmed with low income students whose parents have to work 2 jobs and can’t truly raise them or the other type who don’t work at all and get the government and taxpayers like us to pay for everything. Either way, the kids suffer. There are success stories. Plenty! But, if you think your kid may be subject to bullying or homophobia, transphobia, outcast, or you believe they truly have what it takes to graduate from college. Alexandria is a bad choice. The housing here is cheap. Private schools are double the national average for a reason. I work for a nonprofit and I do care about all people. Don’t make your kids go to Alexandria public schools because you don’t want to drive 30-45 minutes to work. Your kids need to come first

I am a parent of a 6th grader and, I must say, I am pleasently surprised. I also attended a large public middle school on the other side of the country- many years ago and, unfortunately, bullies, kids that are jerks, kids that don't care and want to be disruptive, will always be a thing. Given the uncontrollable factors, if your kid cares, there are plenty of teachers that care and offer resources to help your child. Hammond isn't perfect, but I challenge you to tell me which school is (public OR private).

The students at this school are terrible. They are annoying and stupid, and most of them don't care about education. The teachers on the other hand are kind and eligible, my 7th grade teachers are amazing teachers and are fun, I look forward to going to their classes and learning while also having fun. The classes this school offers are not rigorous enough and the highest math class they offer for 8th graders is Geometry.

We live in Alexandria and our daughter has been a student here for almost two years, 6th grade and now 7th grade. We have known Alexandria families who sold their homes and moved to Fairfax to avoid sending their children to this school. Crazy, and premised on the old reputation of the school. ACPS has devoted many resources over the last several years to improve this school and the investment seems to be paying off. Our daughter enjoys the educational environment, teachers and most students, although the same issues faced by public schools around the world still exist - disruptive students who come from distressed families, parents who don't prioritize education, non-English speakers, bullies. These things aren't ever going away, but ACPS has done a fantastic job improving the school. We are satisfied parents /taxpayers.

This school doesn't care about the mental health of its students. They ignore the constant cries of bullying happening in the school or on the school bus. There seem to be fights and aggressive arguments every day. I dislike this school. They can't even answer emails or return phone calls. It's a joke.

This school was very amazing, although there were some problems with the kids at school, it was an amazing place to learn. The school overall was incredible. I am a rising 9th grader right now, and for the past 3 years from 6th grade to the 8th grade I have studied at this school, My experiences in the 6th and the 7th grade was incredible and on 8th grade even though it was a crazy year(Crazy in the sense that it was virtual and there was a pandemic) I was able to graduate and still move forward with the school year. So with that being said, I would suggest this school for new middle schoolers/ rising 6th graders.

The homework is the appropriate amount for my child's after school learning. Not too much to take away from family time but still enough to keep him focused after school hours.

Posted: June 27, 2018

The teachers at this school are fantastic. They have a great teacher to student ratio which gives them the ability to give quality attention to my son and others. They all seem to have lots of experience in teaching and many have advanced degrees.

Posted: June 27, 2018

The school installs these principles just as well as any other school we've seen. However, if not reinforced in the home life, the student will often not develop these traits.

Posted: June 27, 2018

I have not had an issue and leadership has always been responsive to any of my needs.

Posted: June 27, 2018

It's a diverse school but they dedicate a ton of resources to provide various opportunities to each student. It is truly impressive on how many various programs they offer.

Posted: June 27, 2018

We have not had any major issues with this and all the minor concerns which I have had were addressed immediately.

Posted: June 27, 2018

The student body is diverse, both economically and ethnically. While, this diversity drives down overall test scores, I believe that it provides a great environment for my son to thrive in. The school dedicates a tremendous amount of resources to all students (struggling, exceeding, and those in the middle) and the staff will bend over backwards to help a student succeed. My son has been extremely happy here for the past 2 years and I highly recommend it.

This school changed administration two years ago. The former principal was trying to turn the school
around, but the low work ethic with students and teachers at this school is so systemic that many revolted any change. The new principal is more interested with looking pretty and ignoring problems rather than supporting teachers who do things right. The misguided students run this school and the admin let them by ignoring any negative behavior. The students don't respect teachers and there is no support by admin. for teachers. Most everything this school does is disorganized and thrown together in a sloppy manner, but this is not bad in itself. This is made worse by most involved actually think it's the best that can be done and it's the same everywhere. This school is an example of insanity - doing the same things expecting different results but then feeling sorry for ourselves because it just is our lot in life. Even sadder...teachers are paid the highest in the state in this district (lots of Federal money that also is mismanaged).

This school is great. The teachers are great and have high expectations for the students. The administrators and counselors are easily accessible and available to help. The student population is wonderfully diverse. I love that my child is exposed to so many different cultures.

Posted: October 17, 2016

Yep. School leadership is great about handling bullying situations once they know what's going on.

Posted: October 17, 2016

Posted: October 17, 2016

Yes, the school leadership is great! Ms. Hall is making positive changes. I do wish the district leadership communicated about serious issues more effectively.

Posted: October 17, 2016

Yes, they discuss what it means to be an Admiral, but I feel there is little incentive for positive behavior and too much focus on "taking things away" if a student does something to annoy a teacher.

Posted: October 17, 2016

I believe the teachers know their content and may teach well, but not all of them have kids' best interest at heart. I've sometimes felt that teachers behaved more like gatekeepers and wanted to prove students couldn't do the work instead of actually helping students move forward. In the two years my son has been at the school, I have seen an improvement in teacher quality.

Posted: October 17, 2016

Teachers are very intentional about having students write homework in their agendas and communicating with parents when necessary. The 7th grade teachers are great with this.

Posted: October 17, 2016

My son is now in 7th grade and even though the transition to middle school was a challenge, I felt that the school leadership was extremely supportive even when the teachers were not. Ms. Hall is an outstanding leader, and tremendous change has happened in one year. Also, Hammond has the BEST orchestra instructor period. Ms. Jackson rocks! Ms. Ortiz rocks! Mr. Rademacher rocks! Dean Diggins rocks!

There has been quite a bit of turmoil with the schools coming together but my child and I agree that this was his best year of school. The 8th grade principal actually does her job. By that I mean she treats the students fairly and consistently and is always professional. I have quite a few visits to the school for various reasons and she has never greeted me without a smile. I know working with children, some with good behavior, and some without, could make for frustrating days but one could never tell that based on her demeanor. My son tells me that she is always visible and willing to assist.
Based on the conversations I've had with other parents and students I believe Hammond is on it's way to better days. Having three different schools wasn't the best to begin with.
We are on our way out, but to those coming, best wishes. Hammond is a middle school, there will be problems. However, if the students are lucky, Mrs. Ortiz will become the head principal.

Posted: May 7, 2015

Hammond is a mess. No tardy policy, no consistent discipline. Lunch time is a mess - food fights. There are some great kids and teachers, but learning doesn't take place, when the principal won't deal with the "high fliers", kids who continually disrupt instruction. Inconsistent consequences range from 1 day in school suspension for hitting a faculty member to 4 days ISS for breaking a door. Why? Ditch the principal! Get the teachers on board. Get the parent community members involved. Stop sticking your head in the sand ACPS. Put kids first!

Posted: January 29, 2015

First of all this school has 600 6th graders and 1500 kids total from 6-8 grade so you know it's not going to be good. This school is one of the most dangerous school I've ever been to, there are at least 3 fights a day everybody knows about. Most of the teachers are unsupportive, disrespectful to students, and also pick on students. Changing classes is the hardest and worst part of my day, there are pushing, hitting, and fights left and right. I'm leaving this terrible school to go to a way better school which is a K-8 school which only has 400 kids total, but for all the kids going to Hammond good luck to you and your parents.

thsi schol has good teachers and stuff but the safety is very low i remember obe day my child came home with a black eye and a busted lip amd and bruises she was so hurt she cane home crying and begging me not t go back i felt sb ad i couldn't beleive it she had said that soneobe was picking on her and i told her to tell the teachers but it seems like they didnt help i chose this school because it was close to our bew neighberhood and it looked lje a good school but now i know what goes on there my daughter said that they do that alot and there are many fights and they usally endup on all social media and some kids even get cyberbullied this was my daughter last year which i am glad and im hopping this review will make other parents think twice about sending tge children here i can honestly say mad a mistake chossing this school

Posted: August 24, 2014

I admit that this school can be a a excelent it cud be however, you always get picked on If you are a guirl the girls would try to pick on you and if they are a group they wud not let let you sit with them at lunch and youll panic as to where you could sit. if you are also a boy the other boys would pick on you and try to get you involve on a fight. this school hashas been known as a very rude school. there are also many videos of fights going on especially in instagram. If i coulf choosr where i shud have been for 7th to 8th gd. i wpuld not cjpose this school

Posted: January 2, 2014

The school has the best test scores out of all 3 schools but they still aren't as high as other counties. There are fights ocassionally which I don't think is a safe school environment. The honors classes are good yet they keep kids in if they are struggling. Some teachers are really new and don't know the curriculum and constantly say wrong answers. Sometimes the school lunch ladies don't where hair nets and hair gets on the food which makes the frozen food it is even more gross! As residents in the City of Alexandria parents and students should have the rights to pick and choose which school they would like to attend. Our schools could be better if the administrators reinforced the rules inside the schools. I believe that ROTC class should apply to every student that has bad behavior. These are the kids of the future and I believe that we can change and improve many things if we stay firm.

ok here it is... this school is totally horrible! i was a student there for two years and i am now homeschooled. the students are rude and disrespectful. I was in the office once and this boy was sitting there cursing at the guidence counslor. i was in 7th grade then and that was soo shocking to me. the level of disrespect for teachers and staff is REALLY bad! all though some of the staff was no better. some people will have a different opinion on this school but i am telling you that my experience was terrible!!! the only plus was the teachers. they were cool but some had a hard time with the studennts also...
