We moved from Orange County in California and we are overwhelmingly pleased with Jefferson Houston. We see our children thriving. The principal knows and greets all students by their first name! The classes are small allowing teachers to give attentive care. The electives are once a week! In California we were lucky if they had P-E or art twice in a month. And the middle school art program is phenomenal. We highly recommend Jefferson Houston.

I was nervous in general about sending my daughter to school but JH has really helped. The teachers have really helped her adjust to a big school and new environment. They are really responsive to our concerns and have encouraged my daughter to blossom. I love the diversity and friendliness of everyone weve encountered.

I have atwo children at Jefferson-Houston. Both kids are doing amazing. They love school, their teachers, and love learning. My older one is well above grade level in reading and math, and is in TAG for both. My younger one is excelling in reading and math - when he first started kindergarten, he resisted learning, however in two months, his teachers had him reading above grade level but more importantly, he found a love for reading. His reading teacher is so kind and encouraging. She regularly rewards his growth with certificates or hand written notes of encouragement. For his birthday, she and his teacher gave him a birthday gift to celebrate all his accomplishments. This is a testament to his teachers' passion as educators. All the teachers we have had have been incredibly dedicated, responsive, and so kind towards each of the kids. During the year we were virtual in the pandemic, our teacher that year went to every child's house to set up their laptops and show them how to use it so they would be prepared the first day of school. Our teachers this year have been so excited to be back with the kids. We received weekly communication via email and class folders on what's ahead each week, a paper newsletter in the weekly folder. For kindergarteners, folders were sent home each week with graded work to review progress. The teachers are very responsive, even calling after hours when I have sent an email with a question. These are just a few examples of many in how teachers at JH go above and beyond. The administration is also extremely responsive. I recently emailed the Head of School with a question and he called me that afternoon to talk through it, then talked to the appropriate teachers the next day, then called me back to let me know what the update was. ACPS is a large and diverse urban/city school district with many different needs of students and there will always be people who have had an issue with a school for one reason or another. It's important for parents to tour the school, speak to administration and teachers, and current parents to see for themselves whether a school is a fit. At JH, the parent community is amazing and very involved. There is a vibrant sense of community that celebrates our diverse neighborhood. The PTA is very active and hosts a large number of events, both virtual and in person.

Not an academically competitive school at all.
Our bar is set high for our child. We sold our big home and relocated to a smaller home in a different city and never looked back. The sacrifice all worth it.

I feel like this school has been very supportive. My daughter was nervous starting kindergarten, but the teachers worked with me to help her with her big feelings. Mrs. Shelton is amazing. She is so communicative and invested in her students. I will always be so grateful that she was our daughters kindergarten teacher. The classroom is set up well, lots of different areas for the kids to work in. Early literacy and math skills have been focused on. They make sure that each student is given work on pace with their own learning which I appreciate. It is a great model for a school.

If you are a parent that is involved and active in your child's education, your child will do fine in Jefferson Houston, as they likely would in any school. There are some truly excellent and engaged teachers; there are also a few mediocre teachers, as would be the case anywhere else. Ultimately, my child is happy at the school, and I am not concerned about the education she is receiving. In addition, the school has a kind and welcoming community, and an engaged PTA.

My son has been at JH for 2 years. We absolutely love the staff, administration and the very involved PTA. My son unexpectedly lost his father this year and the Principal, his teacher and the counselor were so supportive. It feels like a community and what a great foundation for my son.

JH is a great school and doing its best to reach its full potential. It has come a long way in the last 6 years we have been at this school. My kids love and enjoy being part of it everyday. It allows them to fully express themselves and makes them feel loved.
I was particularly impressed with the way it navigated through Covid. We were ready for virtual learning from day 1 and we successfully completed both years academically.
We have seen great improvement in the areas of communication, participation and mental well being. We have also seen an increase in parent involvement in the school and city which has helped this school tremendously. I am so glad we enrolled with the school and not opt out purely based on the school rating because there is so much more to it than meets the eye. Both my kids are in TAG and are thriving.

Jefferson Houston has made strides in recent years. First off the facility is excellent. Teachers and staff were really able to be nimble during the pandemic. We appreciate how the bring their students along through the course of the year and we find that during our parent/teacher conferences give us a good road map for our children's progress.

Our daughter is a rising 3rd grader and we have had a very positive experience at JH. The teachers have gone above and beyond during COVID to connect with the students and educate during a very challenging time. The administration is responsive and approachableone of the Assistant Principals gives out his cell phone number to parents should we need to reach him urgently. The classrooms are filled with diverse and energetic students and our daughter comes home happy and excited to learn. In my opinion, that is success!

I have two children who have attended Jefferson-Houston from kindergarten onward. Overall we have had a very good experience. We've had excellent teachers who truly care that the students learn and do their best to create an organized, supportive classroom environment. My children are at or above grade level according to standardized tests that track national averages. My kids really enjoy the "encore" classes, which include Spanish, PE, art, library, and music. Older elementary kids can take Band and choose an instrument, which both of my kids have looked forward to. The school handled the pandemic better than I expected them to, with HEPA units in every room and MERV-13 filters in the HVAC system. They also encouraged masking and did daily temperature checks. My kids also love the playground and the big field. Admin has communicated well over the last year and is responsive when I have questions or concerns. I could have sent my kids to private school or moved at any point over the past 6 years while we have been at J-H, but I have chosen not to -- both because I actually like the school and because I think it is important to support our public schools by being there.

My oldest started at JH in 2016, and my younger kiddo is a rising 3rd grader. My kiddos teachers have been incredibly dedicated and motivating and the administration very responsive. I cant say enough good things about how the school handled COVID through the virtual year and return to school last year. JH is also small enough that it feels like a real community.

JH is a great school. This will be our third year there. My child has made amazing friends, and Ive found the parent community to be engaged and loving. Ive never had a problem communicating with teachers or administrators. They are all so responsive. As a family of color, we also appreciate the racial diversity of the school. The school places a very high emphasis on matters of equity. The only downside, if you can really call it that, is that perhaps the curriculum is not as academically rigorous as my kid would like. But, its elementary school, so Im not very concerned about that.

We have a rising 2nd grader and rising 4th grader at JH. Both kids love school, have had great teachers, and have made good friends. They have never complained about going to school once. I personally would appreciate less technology in the classroom, but I think this is the nature of school these days and is likely not different in other ASPS schools. As a parent, I've found the community to be engaged. In our experience the teachers and administration have also been very responsive. This school provides a very diverse experience, racially, ethnically, and economically, which is an asset in addition to the academics. And, for what it's worth in the world where global pandemics are a thing and online school a possibility, JH did a FANTASTIC job during the 2020-2021 school year. I heard many horror stories from other schools within the same district and from surrounding districts and really never had complaints about how JH handled the responsibility.

We moved to Alexandria when our child was only a year old an were hesitant to purchase a house in the J-H zone, but we loved the neighborhood and after speaking with other families we decided to give J-H a try when our child was school age. Our child finished kindergarten this year and we have been happy with J-H. We have found the teachers to be responsive when we reached out to them, and our child's teacher even met with us in person (outdoors and masked!) when we had concerns, to talk through their progress for almost an hour. We have received notice when our child was hurt, with a call from the school nurse and messages from the teacher. The class size is actually better than other "better-rated" schools, with around 20 students in the kindergarten class this year. Friends in Fairfax have had classes of 27 or 28 kindergartners, which would not be allowed under Alexandria's rules. Our child learned to read and can also do addition and subtraction, and seems to be enjoying school. The PTA is also very active and has held many events, and parents have come out to support and help for events and gatherings. We have been happy with J-H and are looking forward to the next school year.

My family moved from the Midwest to Alexandria and chose J-H specifically because we wanted a diverse learning environment for our 3 kids.

For us, this meant an engaged community who knew our family, teachers who understood our children and knew how to challenge and support them, and a student body that reflected the community around us in the DMVnot a closed bubble that lacked perspective and engagement.

Covid and its impact on all schools in Virginia and the country were challenging (not just ACPS). I agree with some posters here that AVPS and J-H might have done things differently in hindsight (and I think the teachers and admin would also agree!)

But, our familys original objectives for choosing J-H remain the same, and our 3 kids are thriving in ACPS. We love our community school. We are so glad we choose Alexandria when we moved here and we would do it again.

We believe were lucky we get to be a part of their education here at J-H and give back with our time. The teachers and the principal are always grateful, and I know that big picture: the diversity, community, engagement and learning experience they are getting here in ACPS and at JH far out weighs random test scores and arbitrary school rankings on Redfin.

When we moved into area, I heard the school was not great. But after two years at the school, I can say that my kiddo loves school. She is engaged, learning lots, and has made some wonderful friends. The teachers I have meet are nice and responsive to my questions/concerns.

Weve been at JH for five years and have had a really good experience. My kids love being at school and have had great teachers. The family community is really strong and parents come together to support each other, the teachers, and the students. Weve had an exceptional experience in the TAG program this past year and my child was challenged and had significant growth in both reading and math. There is always room for growth in a school that is coming back from challenges and it has been a tough year nationwide for teachers and students but the staff and parents are dedicated to helping the students thrive.

My son attended JH as a Kindergartener this year. We had a great experience. There is a community feeling to the school. My son has made a ton of friends, and hes excited about 1st grade.

Our teacher was very communicative, and overall my child is excelling. Any time I had a question the teacher would call and talk to us about it.

When there was an issue in the classroom with another child, I emailed the principle and received a prompt response.

Ive been so impressed by how engaged the teachers are. All of the teachers I have encountered have been very engaged with the students, even those that teach extracurricular subjects like art and PE.

We were nervous about JH because of some of the negative reviews on this site. But weve found those concerns to be baseless.

To say that this school spectacularly failed my child this year is an understatement. This was our first and will be our only year at this school. While I understand that this has been a unique situation and trying times for schools across the nation, Jefferson Houston trails behind even other schools within ACPS. When I first toured the schools in pre-pandemic times, I was impressed at the size and modernity of it. The kindergarten teachers I met were promising. I noticed even then, issues communicating with administrative staff but overlooked it because I was encouraged by the diversity of the school and wanted that for my child. My child's kindergarten teacher was the only bright spot this year (and the reason school earns even two starts in my review) because the teacher did her best to help my child gain some enjoyment out of virtual learning. The other kindergarten teachers I encountered at the school were similarly trying their best to make the year fun. The administration is another story. If you need records or to speak with someone from the administration, good luck because you will not get a response. The administration is also incompetent to deal with even basic obstacles such as internet outages. Near the end of the school year, an internet outage hit the school and the administration seemed paralyzed to take any action. For an entire WEEK, students went without the pitiful four hours of virtual instruction they were supposed to receive each day. If it were the beginning of the pandemic, I would have given them a little more grace. However, it is unacceptable that after over a year of virtual instruction they were unable to fix an internet issue for an entire WEEK. In addition, they could not plan even a VIRTUAL kindergarten moving up ceremony until just days before, despite other schools within ACPS planning and executing lovely in person, outdoor kindergarten moving up ceremonies. My child's class had 16 students. These are not overpopulated classrooms. Our school did not have a yearbook this year, while other ACPS elementary schools had them. By the last quarter, it seemed the school would just throw up its hands in response to any issue because the year was over in their mind. The school had many indoor and outdoor spaces available to them and could have come up with creative solutions to make this year a little better for these kids but failed to do so.

They try to get the students to be all these things and what not - it would also be nice if the teachers act the same way. My child has been discouraged and dislikes school so much that my child has BEGGED me to go outside of Alexandria City. My child even found out online that Alexandria City has been rated nearly at the bottom if not at the bottom.

My child has been bullied in previous schools in Alexandria City and it happened here too, but not as bad as before. I know they promote anti-bullying, but I am not sure if they really are effective.

My original rating was 3 stars, but as I went through all these questions, I knocked it down to 2 stars. I am debating if I should knock it down another notch, considering I don't think they distinguish between "honors" and "general" classes. And how some of the teachers act towards students - Why bother teaching if you are going to be mean, rude, and what not towards students.

Some of the teachers seem like they might be helpful. There are a few that play "favorites" or single out other students, such as giving dirty looks or blatantly ignoring the student, which is very unprofessional. Some teachers are so unhelpful they tell the students to "figure it out themselves", they are not in high school-college yet. They need some guidance still.

Weve had an excellent experience here - far better than anticipated. We will definitely be back after a wonderful kindergarten year. We are just one of many families attending JH that have been thrilled with the progress in 2017-18 and can substantiate the upward trend. We no longer feel the need to consider moving to another school system, as the schools accreditation is being reinstated in Fall 2018. The greatschools.org scores provided here seem to be rather outdated.

The kids are concerned with helping each other, participating in clubs, growing their garden, attending concerts and events to support their peers even if they aren't participating. There are awards given for character, leadership, citizenship... and the student council is really dedicated.

My daughter is a kindergartner at Jefferson-Houston and we couldn't be happier with the school. Her teacher is wonderful, the class sizes are relatively small, the IB program is great, they have Spanish instruction once a week and -- most importantly -- she comes home every day excited to tell us what she has learned. Not only is she thriving academically but she loves the after school clubs such as yoga, chess and robotics. I would encourage anyone who is hesitant about the school to please go and take a tour. I think what you will find is very different than what is described in some of the outdated reviews.

My Daughter started here this year and our experience has been wonderful. I find the engagement with staff to be regular and valuable in monitoring my Daughters progress, the facilities are excellent and the range of after school care programs extend what is already a balanced curriculum. I was initially reticent to enroll my Daughter here based on very dated reviews of the previous school (prior to the rebuild), however one should not be misled by those reviews! This is a wonderful school which is ably supported by a very motivated PTA.

We are very happy with the school and our daughter's experiences there. The teachers are dedicated and caring and able to provide individualized attention and instruction to all of their students. The kids are kind to each other and the facility is top-notch. We especially like the wide array of choices for after-school clubs, organized by the PTA. Robotics, yoga, cooking, running, acting, and chess are just a few of the offerings.

Our first grade daughter has about 10 minutes of homework a night, and we use it as a way to wind down after playing and dinner. There is no excessive pressure to complete the homework, so if she has a busy week and is keeping up in class, it is ok if she doesn't complete all homework.

I've raised my review, mostly because of my kid's first grade teacher. I know that this is the age where character comes out (the "Age of Reason"), but I feel so blessed that she has a good guide in her teacher as she navigates her newfound character traits.

I have been so impressed with the teachers. Granted, they have the advantage of an amazing ratio, but our teacher started a book club for the first grade readers at the highest level and still keeps the class chugging along. Yes, it's hilarious that my first grader is in a book club, and says things like "I've got to finish my chapter for book club." I'm hoping that the teacher doesn't serve Malbec, like at other Alexandria book clubs!

We sent our daughter to JH for kindergarten. She is now a first grader. Our child is reading us chapter books written for kids entering the third grade. She describes plant life cycles based on the school garden (and eating lettuce from said garden's bumper crop!). She understands the root concept of fractions, decimal places, and basic math functions. She loves school.

Just as important, the school loves her - from the new building which says "you matter enough for investment" to teachers who are making test scores climb while still making school fun. The flexible common learning areas are fantastic, and she's looking forward to picking up an instrument in second grade - we are one of the few schools that starts a music program that early - because we can.

We are looking forward to the smaller middle school in a few years and putting our second into Kindergarten at JH. When the eldest hits middle school, always a tough time, it will be with her elementary school friends and in a smaller setting. And she'll be taking her little sib to school with her.

Jefferson-Houston does have a bad reputation, but my wife and I found that reputation is a lagging indicator for progress. If you've already made up your mind, a review like this won't change it. But if you're open, visit the school. You might find that the reputation is about five years behind.

J-H has an enthusiastic community of students, teachers, administrators, staff, and parents. It also has fantastic facilities: a new building and K-8 means elementary students have resources not available elsewhere. Test scores are improving as investment in the school has turned the corner. I encourage everyone to visit the school and be impressed by the level of learning taking place.

My daughter is a twice exceptional child - extremely gifted, but also with special needs. The teachers and staff have been very sensitive to her needs and issues and work with us to ensure her needs are met. The smaller school and class sizes (for middle school) as opposed to what she'd have at Hammond make a very big and positive difference for her. We greatly appreciate the levels of communication and willingness to work with families to ensure a positive education experience for the children.

When we compared homework loads between our daughter and kindergartners (kindergartners!) from other schools, we were pleased to see that our teacher wasn't a drill and kill teacher. A full day of Kindergarten is plenty for a 5-6 year old. And we haven't missed it.

This school has changed principals often. The new building has not changed the staff. They only offer Spanish and middle school students have to go to GW for after school activities. Spend time at this school in the classrooms and meet with the current principal before making a decision to send your child here.

Jefferson Huston middle school is a great school am very happy Faculty and staff focus on developing students are learning independence and take personal responsibility for their assignments. This school is now a way to big building, the classes are small, the student population is not as diverse as it used to be. The parking is tight, and it is not easy to access the building. One can not enter from the rear of the building for after hour programs. The floors are all cement so not good on legs or feet. If I were not in the designated area for attendance, I would not send my children there.

Jefferson-Houston offers three preschool programs. My children attend the PLT program that combines typical developmental children with children with delays in their development. Is a wonderful program with a great team of teachers that families should take benefit of.

Jefferson Houston has the potential to be a good school but the bullying is out of control. I had to pull my son from the school and the administration is not proactive enough to handle the students that are causing the problems. I recommend to do your research before enrolling your child.
