Matthew Maury is now Naomi Brooks Elementary School. My child likes the school better than I do, but I’m happy she’s happy. There is very little communication between parents and teachers outside of teacher conferences. Now with Covid, you basically don’t step foot in the school. There’s opportunities for parents to be involved (which I am), but that involvement is PTA related and really doesn’t provide insight into what’s going on with your child. I’d say each year, you probably talk to the teacher less than 60 minutes total (and I attend everything). If your kid is average/high average, it seems that no one really encourages their strengths. If there are are concerns issues, they don’t seem to think outside the box, instead they stick to their party line. I don’t know everyone’s situation, but I think this is part of why I’m seeing many families leave for private school.

Three children in our family have attended Maury and all were tested as reading on a 12th grade level before they completed fifth grade. One was in the gifted language arts class and the other two were not. Our experience is that school’s reading program is solid and supports all students. Maury provided wonderful science and math education to our children, too. The educators there are focused and talented. We recommend the school highly.

Maury Elementary is a wonderful community with strong academics and amazing resources. Our kids are successful there and over the years, the teachers have focused on our children individually and provided customized education plans and supplemental resources when needed. And Rosemont is a terrific place to live. The PTA and community of families which support Maury are amazingly resourceful, too.

Some of the homework was just busy work when I went there; it did not help some of the time and just made us mad. If your kid is going there, though, they don't give that much homework, which leads to lots of free time for other stuff.

Posted: October 14, 2019

I had many teachers that did nothing for me at Maury, and I had teachers that were some of the best teachers I've had even through High School. If you get the right teachers, your kids can have a great time at Maury.

Posted: October 14, 2019

This school is where I shaped my life and has created most of my compassion and has made me had excellent friends with people that I wouldn't have if I was exposed to a different crowd of people.

Posted: October 14, 2019

Parents and Teachers all know their roles at this school and help the kids all they can and are very nice about it.

Posted: October 14, 2019

When I went to Maury, most of the kids with learning disabilities were out of the school within a couple of weeks; the program didn't support them even though they tried to.

Posted: October 14, 2019

In my experience, if you don't want to be bullied, you have to get lots of "friends" Teachers wouldn't help you, my fifth-grade science teacher got fired for bullying other kids and talking wrong about them behind their backs and to other teachers. The Principal was a great principal and was very effective at shutting down bullying, but she couldn't be everywhere at once, so it happened a lot when I was there, and you need friends that would protect you.

Posted: October 14, 2019

I would rate my experience an 8/10 because I loved Maury, and even though it has its ups and downs, I would suggest it to everyone.

Maury Elementary and the Rosemont community are jewels. The School’s academics are solid. The Educators are skilled and create an environment where all kids thrive. They take special care to support all the kids as individuals. The school’s leadership team is talented, diplomatic and focused on the right things as well.

Posted: September 2, 2019

I don't know if it was because my child is a minority, his 2nd grade teacher could care less about his homework and gave reports that were inconsistent with my son's actual academic performance. She would rate him high but when I tested him,he would fall extremely short of expectations.
A nightmare where kids of lie income patents who don't have the time to fully invest in their children's academics are left way behind. And this us coming from a mom who was actively invested in school activities. I basically felt like I was home schooling my kid.
Terrible! Pray your child gets a good, dedicated teacher who's a minority, emphasis on 'good dedicated' or else you'll be left in the loop.

Posted: September 2, 2019

Teachers seem to lack a passion for kids whose parents do not reside in the neighbourhood and cannot constantly be monitoring the performances of their kids in class.
There is more attention given to kids from the wealthier neighborhood than others from lower income families. Very sad!

Posted: September 2, 2019

The school is basically administered by the neighbourhood parents who determine what's important to emphasize with the kids.

Posted: September 2, 2019

New black Principal who seems to be way over his head in handling the very domineering white parents who feel they own the school. He appears too scared to implement programs that would help the underserved in that school.

Posted: September 2, 2019

Cannot speak to that as I never experienced any interactions with kids with disabilities

Posted: September 2, 2019

Teachers lazily stand by and never get involved while students take matters into their own hands. There is a very palpable fear of parents and their influence on the school board

Posted: September 2, 2019

Very sad. Made friends with a few of the parents who seemed open to other cultures, but most of them are very close minded and breed close minded children with regards to race.

We are happy we made this choice and encourage others to check out the school and the effective community of educators and community members who support the Maury students. Academics are strong.

Our family has nothing nothing but accolades for the Maury Elementary. Also, the class sizes have been small for our children (17 and 21 kids per class at present). Because all the students, and some of the teachers, live within walking distance of the school, the students have the opportunity to interact outside of an academic setting, too. We think this fosters a sense of community and is one secret to Maury's enduring appeal.

Maury is indeed at "Great School" and the skilled teachers produce great results. The Rosemont neighborhood community is also a wonderful community for the students. The only downside is the high cost of housing in the jurisdiction which is partly driven by the excellent public schools - not just Maury Elem., but GW Middle and TC Williams High as well.

I wish all families could have a school like Maury to educate their children. The educators at the school consistently exceed our high expectations in almost all aspects of education. As a bonus, the school will soon begin construction on a $1.4 million playground renovation.

Posted: April 30, 2015

The field trips funded by the Maury PTA and managed by the teachers and staff provide wonderful educational opportunities. Our children have seen the following on Maury class field trips: Jamestowne and Yorktown; The White House; U.S. Capital; The Kennday Center; DC's Decatur House; George Washington's Mount Vernon; Alexandria's Gadsby's Tavern, Ledbetter Apothocary, City Hall and Masonic Temple; Alexandria's Winkler Nature Preserve; and Alexandria's trash incinerator/power plant; and Alexandria's water treatment falicility.

Our family loves Maury Elementary and would highly recommend it to others looking for a high quality education in a wonderful community.

Posted: April 9, 2015

Our child tells us he loves this school. We as parents love it, too. The teachers and the administration are great at communicating with families. We have noticed over time that the educators consistently deliver the message to each child that he or she is expected to do his or her best at all times. Of course, the staff support the children in this. Class sizes are small and the music and art teachers are exceptionally talented educators. On-site afters school enrichment programs are run by the PTA and provide excellent additional opportunities for learning.

Posted: January 8, 2015

We highly recommend this school. Our boy thrives there and the teachers he has had have been highly skillled. The administration focuses on all the right stuff and the PTA is resources beyond imagination.

Our child has spent five years at Maury School. Each year, he has developed skills beyond his grade level and his highly-skilled teachers have been dedicated. He has loved this school and his community of friends in Rosemont. We, as parents, think his experience at Maury has positioned him well for academic success going forward. We like to think we focus on academics in our family. Maury focuses on academics, too.

I cannot say enough great things about Maury Elementary. The faculty and staff are very effective leaders. The Rosemont Community provides an unbelievable level of positive support for the school. I have become friends with many people and the PTA's raises a large amount of money to support curriculum enrichment programs for all grades. Abobe all, Maury provides a nurturing and caring environment for our children.

Maury Elementary School meets our high standards. The faculty/staff display amazing skills daily. The community supports the school in amazing ways. The school systems provides abundant resources. There is a wonderful positive culture around the Maury Community as well. We are pround to send our children to this excellent school.

Our family moved to Alexandria from Europe where our children attended excellent schools. We have found that Maury Elementary provides our kids with a very high quality educational experience. The active Rosemont community is very engaged as well. It is an amazing convenience that all our children's school friends live within a short walk of the school and our home. We highly recommend this school.

Posted: July 28, 2014

We are first time parents and Rosemont residents. Two years ago as our oldest started Kindergarten, and we analyzed many school options (public and private) in detail before deciding to send him to Maury School. The school has been terrific for our child and we highly recommend it. The staff is caring and skilled. The community is incredibly involved. Our child does well academically and socially at Maury. W are very happy that we have become a Maury Family. We highly recommend this school to other families.

Posted: June 12, 2014

Our child has been at Maury for a number of years and achieves far beyond our expectations academically and musically. We credit the top teachers, the focused school administration and the supportive community for creating an excellent school.

I am an educator by profession and I believe Maury is one of the best elementary schools in the National Capitol region.

Posted: January 1, 2014

Our two children continue to thrive at Maury School and continue to be excited about learning year after year. The teachers challenge the students in a positive way. The enlightened Alexandria City Public School System and Alexandria City Government provide great resources for a full range of student needs from talented and gifted to special needs. The soccer field could use some work but the school system and the PTA have an initiative to improve this in the next year.

Posted: December 8, 2013

Generally a good public school but with poor central administration. It's sort of assumed that you'll get all of your information from other parents. Very strong pta, which sponsors a number of great after-school clubs.

Posted: December 7, 2013

Maury's teachers and staff, the PTA, and the community at-large are all focused on the kids and their success in a loving, supportive, welcoming way.

Posted: October 23, 2013

Awesome academics, wonderful teachers, superb staff and a super caring environment. Maury surely meets our high standards!

Posted: October 16, 2013

We just enrolled but already feel so luck to be at this school. It's something special and once to enter you feel it.. The principal is amazing, teachers appear caring and well prepared, and the children are respectfully and orderly. They run a tight ship. Very loving environment which fosters a successful learning environment. I question some of the ratings on this website having moved from another elementary school in town. If find it hard to believe that their student body is testing as high as reported.

Posted: September 26, 2013

Maury is a excellent school. The staff took time with my child to make sure he was on track. They put the students needs first. Ms jackson really is a great leader. She is definitely taking the school in the right direction.

Our daughter and son thrive at Maury School. We find the school to be well-funded and the educators to be highly skilled. It is hard to imagine a better learning environment or supporting community.

Posted: May 27, 2013

We think Maury provides an outstanding education for our children. We are particularly impressed with the quality of the science and math instruction. However, the basic classroom instruction has our child (and most of their classmates) reading at a level which is 1-2 grades above expected.

Posted: January 25, 2011

This is our third year at Maury and we are very happy. It is a very nice school community and active parents who work to provide access to programs for all students. All of the teachers we have had so far have been very good and the school has a very positive culture. My daughter loves it.

I actually opted IN to Maury and it was the best decision we ever made. It truly is a community, not just a school. Ms. Jackson is a beloved principal, by staff, students and parents alike! My daughter is in her fourth year there and each year we are happier than the one before.
