Our children have thrived at Discovery for the past several years. While one needed more social-emotional/behavioral supports and the other needed more academic support, we have been so impressed with the caliber of resources and time the school has to help every student. All the teachers are so skilled, intelligent, and connect with the students- at pickup I see students running up to their old teachers, excited to say hi. The facilities are top notch, beautiful, spacious rooms with tons of natural light and calming corners/reading nooks in every classroom. It really feels like a neighborhood school with the academic rigor of a private college prep school. Great place to learn and be involved as a parent.

Very high staff turn over in recent years, even in the middle of the school year. Behavioral issues are not addressed effectively

Kids are not getting enough homework even in the 4th grade. They don't learn accountability and studying skills and parents don't know what is going on.

Best elementary school in the country. State of the art building and brilliant teachers.

Posted: June 27, 2018

While they have nightly expectations for reading and other avenues to practice & reinforce their learning (like Reflex on their iPad) homework is all but non-existent in the lower grades, as the philosophy maintained is that they work so hard in school all day that when they get home, they should be experiencing other activities like family time and getting out to play and engage in other areas of physical and mental enrichment. I kind of like it! Once they hit 4th grade, homework begins to take a more prominent role. So far, the only drawback I see with the no homework policy is that it creates a distance for me in knowing exactly what they are working on and being able to have easy hands on time to help them engage in practicing it at home. As a parent, you can always find what they are working on by visiting the virtual google classroom and following the teacher's email and online updates. Just a little different than the experience of sitting down with your kid to work on math problems after dinner.

We have had a variety of teachers between our 3 kids attending Discovery and we have honestly been very happy! This past year's teacher's were all so wonderful, my kids almost don't want to move to the next grade! Discovery has a staff of super passionate, fresh minded and engaging teachers!

Posted: June 27, 2018

At Discovery they practice a school wide program called C.A.R.E.S. where they work on teaching about and promoting behaviors in different aspects of character building. It seems to be a great model and our kids are always really proud to come home with a bracelet/band that they earned for being recognized by another student or a teacher for an action hitting on one of the C.A.R.E.S principles! (Compassion, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, and Sharing)

My 3 kids LOVE Discovery! Having had our kids attend several elementary (& pre) schools, overseas and across the US through the years, we are very happy with the quality of education and whole child centered mission at Discovery! Our kids are learning to be effective, ambitious learners and self reliant, responsible globally minded citizens with passions and curiosities beyond their years! All this is happening every day, through the dedication of the teachers and staff at DES who you can tell REALLY LOVE their jobs and care about the well being of each of their kids... MY kids!

The green initiative & sustainability efforts that Discovery is so well known for, are a refreshing change in pace and a wonderful way to build a much needed foundation for the next generation. My kids have all excitedly embraced being Green Leaders through the Eco-Action Team. The effects of the seeds planted by our DES community have spread to so much of what we do at home, it makes me a really proud Mom!

My kids don't just LOVE being at Discovery because they have an indoor slide and have amazing hands-on arts & maker opportunities, but because the teachers & administrators make learning truly fun & rewarding and fill their days with engaging chances to learn! From the open door of the Principal's office, to the lunch & custodial staff, our kids don't just know the names of almost everyone, they sincerely appreciate & adore them! I'm glad that my kids spend their days here exploring so much of what the world has to offer. There is such a great sense of community and a staff who sincerely care and love what they are doing! I love that my kids are not just learning that they can be just about anything that they want to be, but that they truly believe it! A true testament to this school and the amazing things that go on inside those walls everyday can be seen in how much my kids have grown since moving here! Daily, my kids are taken through empowering learning experiences that go well above and beyond the typical academic model, to a world of unending possibilities.

Discovery has very little to no homework until 4th grade - the kids have a jam packed day of learning and can focus on play or other activities after school...the way it should be!

Posted: May 21, 2018

All of our teachers have been great.

Posted: May 21, 2018

In as short time, Discovery created a unique culture of integrity, respect, caring for students and its environment, and being responsible citizens of our community.

All three of my kids have had wonderful experiences at Discovery. The facilities are amazing. Plenty of opportunities for my children to in excel in activities outside of basic academics. The teachers are very accessible and enthusiastic.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Homework is limited to meaningful activities and projects and is not assigned merely to have homework.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Two children- grades 5 and 2-4. All teachers have been very effective in their own ways.

Posted: May 16, 2018

CARES program, responsive classroom, and overall environment lend themselves to this. It is strongly enhanced by teacher support.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Leadership is responsive and effective. They had the unique responsibility of creating a new school culture with the first year of Discovery which both my children were a part of. It has only grown since then.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Both my children are identified as gifted and have been appropriately challenged and supported throughout their time at Discovery.

Posted: May 16, 2018

The teachers and administration have been very responsive in the few situations I have been made aware of, though nothing directly with my children.

Posted: May 16, 2018

Overall excellent. I never hesitate to recommend Discovery to other families looking in the area. We had an excellent experience at Nottingham prior to Discovery as well. On top of all the great teachers, supportive administration, and the great student/parent community- you can't beat the amazing physical environment of the school and the opportunities for learning it presents.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Minimal homework until 4th grade. Any homework assigned is meaningful and/or project-based. No worksheets.

Posted: May 15, 2018

We've had fantastic teachers at Discovery. Personal experience with 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Discovery has an incredibly strong C.A.R.E.S program to reinforce the importance and value of showing compassion, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and sharing.

Posted: May 15, 2018

I have been very impressed with the principal, Erin Russo. I got to know Erin during Discovery's first year when serving on the Executive Board of the PTA, and I was routinely impressed with her approach to problems and commitment to putting the kids and teachers first.

Posted: May 15, 2018

I've had experience with this via the IEP and 504 programs. My son has received the extra services needed.

Posted: May 15, 2018

I haven't had personal experience with this.

Posted: May 15, 2018

I've been very pleased with Discovery. I feel like the whole school is constantly innovating and shaking up "typical" ways to do things. Impressive projects, student-led, great school-wide celebrations, really nice sense of community.

Posted: May 15, 2018

While students were not overly burdened with homework, as they got older, they were given assignments that encouraged them to work over several days and allowed them to develop both their academics and organizational skills.

Posted: May 15, 2018

The teachers are well aligned to the school vision both academically and in terms of behaviors, and support their students including through collaborative efforts.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Posted: May 15, 2018

The principal and vice principal have done an exceptional job selecting staff that share their vision and offering opportunities for training and professional development to the staff. Having them hand-select their team has meant much greater convergence around the common vision, and I see the positive impact on the learning environment.

Posted: May 15, 2018

While the support has been exceptional, I would suggest that the team revise upwards their expectations for kids with learning differences.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Posted: May 15, 2018

Exceptional! I am very happy that my daughter joined the school as soon as it opened and has had a nurturing, positive and empowering experience at the school!

Posted: May 15, 2018

There is a school wide focus on differentiated leaning. Instead of pull out programs, Explorer Time during the day allows for the individualized experience.

Posted: May 15, 2018

The answer to bullying is not expelling students but rather making sure they have the supports and controls so the behavior stops. School environment is always something that can be improved.

Posted: May 15, 2018

This is an elementary school that focuses on learning but also on kids being kids. While ensuring that reading is still a high priority, students focus only on meaningful homework and many teachers will tailor for specific student needs.

Posted: May 15, 2018

I could not speak more about how great the teachers are at the school. My child has been in the school since second great and has had three teachers who have each challenged him in a different way. My youngest is having a similar experience in kindergarten. The teachers see a true partnership with parents for the benefit of the students.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Discovery explorers are expected to be learners who are constantly making connections with the world around them.

Posted: May 15, 2018

There is a lot of student and educator support. Like most schools communication and transparency can always be improved. But overall it is good.

Posted: May 15, 2018

We have been more than pleased with our kids experience. They love going to school. they are learning more then I could have ever expected. It is the feeling of going to a private school in a public school setting.

My child attending 4th and 5th grade for the first two years the school was in existence. He had a wonderful experience and I was so impressed with the dedication of teachers and staff. The building is lovely, but it is the community that makes it terrific. My kids have attended both ASFS and Discovery, and I feel like both provided them with excellent elementary experiences.

Posted: May 15, 2018

It follows all the studies that show reading is the most important thing in the early years.

Posted: May 15, 2018

They listen to feedback and provide great guidance. Always on next level with different teaching methods.

Posted: May 15, 2018

The school follows the responsive classroom methodology and I see it work in my kids

Posted: May 15, 2018

Striving to always improve the school in many ways

Posted: May 15, 2018

They school has several programs in place.

Posted: May 15, 2018

Posted: May 14, 2018

The teachers do an effective job of teaching our kids that allows them Tom to play after school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

We have had wonderful teachers who engage with our children and with parents.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The school focuses on training students to care for others and our environment.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The leadership team is great at providing a great learning environment for our kids and communication with parents.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The school has an amazing team that actively wired to support the needs of all students.

Posted: May 14, 2018

We have not encountered bullying at school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

No homework until 4th grade is an excellent policy and in keeping with numerous research studies indicating that homework does not correlate with learning in elementary school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

My daughter loves to go to school every day. In three years she has grown from a shy and uncertain kindergartener to a confident, smart second grader, and I credit Discovery's excellent teachers and supportive environment. She is learning academically, but she is also learning to be kind and to treat others with respect. My son went to Taylor and the two schools have a very different feel, but the quality of education at Discovery is at least as good as that at Taylor. (And the space is much, much nicer and not overcrowded!)

Posted: May 14, 2018

Great leadership team that is very involved and responsive.

Posted: May 14, 2018

My son has an IEP and the special education team is wonderful! They are super responsive and keep me in the loop.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Posted: May 14, 2018

They do not give busy work for homework. Typically just reading every night in the lower grades.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Great teachers who care about their students succeeding!

Posted: May 14, 2018

School teaches kids CARES- cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control.

Posted: May 14, 2018

WeÂ’ve loved our Discovery experience! We were redistricted from Taylor Elementary and I feel Discovery is just as good, or even better despite being a brand new school. My oldest son is going to middle school next year and he is going to miss his Discovery family. The building is state of the art- LEED certified, high-tech, gorgeous light filled design- and the teachers and support staff are dedicated and caring. My youngest son had one rough year with a not so great teacher, but she has since left the school and he has had a much better experience in subsequent grades. The PTA is very active and there is a strong sense of community. Highly recommend Discovery!

Posted: May 14, 2018

The CARES programming is emphaized. For children who struggle with relationships, the counseling team is amazing. My younger son participated in the Zones of Regulation curriculum, which helped at school and at home.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Drs. Russo and Concha believe in a responsive classroom approach and have heavily invested in professional development for their staff. They are responsive to parents inquiries. They show up for PTA meetings (monthly), as well as numerous after school events. They are terrific representatives of the school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Both of my children are gifted and have been given numerous opportunities to stretch their capabilities. In addition to being gifted, my older son has ADHD and Mrs. Olmsted and the Discovery team worked with us on implementing suitable accommodations to help him succeed.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Teachers and the administration are responsive. However, kids can be mean. Discovery also teaches children how to stick up for one another. Even when there have been incidents, it also requires the families to hold their children accountable - so some issues are beyond the control of the school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Focus is on learning and doing rather than homework. Both of my boys love their experience at Discovery. I wish the middle and high schools also taught this way - much more effective way to retain information.

Posted: May 14, 2018

My older son had Mrs. Olmsted for 5th grade the first year that Discovery was open. She was critical in getting my son on an effective 504 Plan before middle school. She cares about the children she teaches and developed a strong bond with my son. My younger son started in 2nd grade and is now in 4th and his teachers have also been engaging. Especially Ms. Coulouris for 2nd grade. Discovery is a caring and safe environment

Posted: May 14, 2018

Outstanding! We started off at Nottingham and had a great experience there. But Discovery is something else all together. It is an amazing environment for children to learn and families to bond. Plus itÂ’s a public school!!!

Posted: May 14, 2018

Posted: May 14, 2018

There is a meaningful homework policy, but I feel come 3rd grade kids should have a few sheets of homework per week.

We have had a great experience tab Discovery. It just opened 3 years ago so had some kinks to work out in the first year but has now hit its stride. Wonderful teachers. Great “extras” like Poetry Slams, Book Battles, 5th grade play, multi cultural nights, fitness focus, kid friendly community volunteering opportunities etc. Great family community as well.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The quality homework policy is amazing. Kids have time to play sports, take music classes, play OUTSIDE and do all of the other things kids should be doing instead of hiding inside doing homework for an hour or two. They have plenty of time to learn so-called "homework skills" when they get to middle school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Both of my children have had amazing teachers at this school. My daughter was well prepared for middle school.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The CARES program is well taught and makes kids mindful of how they treat each other. We have not had any issues of bullying as we have seen in other schools.

Posted: May 14, 2018

Dr. Russo is an excellent principal and does put up with parent garbage which is why some parents don't like her.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The SPED team is really, really great. All of the teachers are very strong and help all kids even those not identified as special needs.

Posted: May 14, 2018

The CARES program takes a strong approach to combating bullying. My kids talk about it a lot.

While this is a beautiful new school, there's definitely room for improvement in other areas. Administration has not satisfactorily dealt with peer aggression situations.

Posted: March 13, 2018

There is a no homework policy because the principal thinks it doesnÂ’t add anything of value. However, when students move on to middle school they have no habit of doing homework and no time management skills.

Posted: March 13, 2018

One of my children had an amazing teacher, but because she thought outside the box and was creative, she battled with the principal and then left the school. The principal does not allow teachers to adapt to the kids in the class. Every teacher in each grade must teach the same material, in the same way, at the same time.

Posted: March 13, 2018

The school does nothing to stop bullying. Instead they will tell you that the behavior in question is not actually bullying, so they donÂ’t have to address it.

Posted: March 13, 2018

The principal and assistant principal like to tell parents what they want to hear, but then do whatever they want instead.

Posted: March 13, 2018

The general answer from the administration is to say specific behavior is not actually bullying. ThatÂ’s their way of avoiding the topic and pretending itÂ’s not happening.

Posted: March 13, 2018

Mediocre. I had one child who had excellent teachers and thrived academically. And another child who, after 2.5 years at the school, still makes me question what is being taught. I have no clue what is happening in the classroom because so much is done online parents never see things. And the administration makes it difficult for parents to get information by not allowing teachers to send emails updating parents.

Posted: March 5, 2018

Posted: March 5, 2018

Posted: March 5, 2018

Bullying is rampant. The bully wins when the administration does nothing about it.

Posted: March 5, 2018

The two women that run this school say the right things, but one on one, are ineffective and dismissive of anything anyone else considers a problem.

Posted: March 5, 2018

Discovery Elementary supports students with learning differences.

Posted: August 26, 2017

There have been multiple bullying instances, and the involved students have not been dealt with by the principal.

Posted: August 26, 2017

While the supporting staff is wonderful in fulfilling this task of building strong character, the leader teacher does not.

Posted: August 26, 2017

Please see comments above. Not much was done after multiple parents complained to the principal about the aforementioned teacher.

Posted: August 26, 2017

Sadly, our child's experience wasn't the perfect 1st grade experience you'd want for your kids. While all supporting staff is wonderful and does such a tremendous job, one particular first grade teacher either doesn't like children or simply doesn't like her job. And unless there is another grown-up present, she won't shy away from letting the kids know that she feels this way. She has her favorites and openly shames kids for the way they dress, their school gear, and the way they wear their hair. She also openly questions parents' decisions (during their absence, of course). This teacher will crush your kid's confidence. We were very disappointed in this teacher and have talked to multiple parents that felt the same way. We talked to the principle a number of times and voiced our opinion in the school's survey. We're intently hoping that this teacher will grow into her roll, as she's certainly not someone to look up to as of right now. She's unkind, visibly moody, and with her stinging and at times hurtful remarks, highly unprofessional.

This is an amazing school. My children have thrived in the last 2 years at Discovery. The teachers and staff are amazing. I cannot say enough good things. And the building itself is beyond anything else in the area!
