We had to leave. The leadership was so poor from K-5, so I only hope things are better under the new principal. My child was bullied (physically and verbally) all years (except during Covid) with no effective response. Learning became a bore based on what leadership pushes the teachers to teach. The teachers were amazing but their hands are tied on how much they can do. There were no extracurriculars at all and my child was bored. Any activities that were provided, not consistently, are not fun anyway if you are bullied and don’t feel connected.

Working at Patrick Henry was an awful experience. The principal is a bully. Students are not engaged because the principal demands that all lessons be a specific way. The principal does not follow up on her promises. She has her minions and they keep an eye on people for her. It’s very big brother. Do not send your kids here and don’t teach here. @ACPS do something about this.

My son has been here since Kindergarten, placed int the Gifted Program since the 1st Grade. Teachers and the Admin. Staff are great, approachable and supportive, Happy we are part of this School.

I think they encourage the right amount of homework.

Posted: January 21, 2019

Once the miracle school under Marcia Baldanza, Patrick Henry is reduced to robotic, unimaginative curriculum. Success for All is the reading program, and is widely derided as the killer of passion for reading.

Posted: January 21, 2019

Administration divides the students into three groups; certain to pass SOL's, those on the bubble and, finally, those who have little to no chance of doing so. This is an insultingly myopic method of instruction that smacks of education of the 1950's.

Posted: January 21, 2019

Posted: January 21, 2019

My children left Patrick Henry after 5 years having been bored, drilled to death and turned off on education.

Posted: January 21, 2019

There is a dearth of meaningful assignments. Most homework is rote based and has memorization at its core.

I am consistantly surprised at the students and staff at this school. My children have grown up here and they are better for it. I see children that are happy and working hard to get smart (logo of the school)... I am proud that my children go to this school and they can see kids from many different cultures and learn from that as well.

Posted: May 18, 2018

They have started to reduce the amount of school work in the past 2 years and I think that has been very effective. I am not a fan of the SOL testing and think too much time is spent on it and wish they could learn more application of knowledge (research project or science project, etc.). This is not a school issue but rather a state issue as it is a requirement for their accreditation.

Posted: May 18, 2018

Ms. Bynum takes a very active approach and often greets each child by name. She is setting up the older kids with jobs so they can work helping younger kids as hall monitor/doing announcements, etc. for Patrick Henry bucks to use for special activities (rewards system for good behavior.). I see my daughter is mature beyond her years by her actions and her drive to succeed (she currently in the first 6th-grade class at Patrick Henry as it is converting to a K-8 school). My sone is in 4th grade and reading in a 6th+ grade level (their reading program doesn't go higher).

Posted: May 18, 2018

Ms. Bynum is a very strong leader for the students and teachers who it very invested in the school... Often refers to the students as "my babies" and always take a minute to talk to students and listen/provide encouragement. I never wanted to talk to or see my principal after school as a child, but my children often ask to go talk to her and that speaks volumes to me on her leadership as they want to follow her.

Posted: May 18, 2018

They have a TAG program and they are adding the new middle school and will be expanding their programs for them next year (first 7th grade class next year and opening new school!).

Posted: May 18, 2018

My son was bullied when he was in his Kindergarden year with the previous administrator, but once it was found out it was quickly addressed and vigilently monitored. This school like all schools has its issues, but it has improved tremendously and actions they are taking seem to be working.

This school have one of the best if not the best principal and Academic staff in nova. If you’re looking for a school that give every child an opportunity to learn, excel and be prepared for a higher education ! then you are in the right place.

Awesome!!!!!! I absolutely love Patrick Henry. My daughter has excelled in the learning environment here. The implementation of uniforms really allows students to focus on academics by elemating the distraction of looking to impress each other based upon clothing. The kids are looking to impress each other with their achievements in academics and behavior. They also have multiple arts programs available and have implemented the AVID program as well. The staff is very attentive and are always looking to make sure each child reaches their maximum potential.

graded homework starts in Pre-K! Was a little overwhelming as parents but at that age, the kids think it's fun.

Fantastic leadership, teachers, and staff, very optimistic people.
We're famous for being the parents of this, let's just say, very emotional student during his first two to three months at their Pre-K. This kid, our little boy, cried and cried when dropped off. He wouldn't let go or take off his backpack for about two months. He was speech-delayed and couldn't express himself; it must have been very frustrating. As his parents, we were very self-conscious of this situation but received nothing but support. The entire faculty at Patrick Henry never flinched; they embraced him. They never judged or spoke any ill of the situation. The principal, Ingrid Bynum, took it upon herself to help him stop crying by taking him aside and using her cellphone to Facetime us once. She just about knows every student in that school, and their parents, grandparents, favorite TV show, food etc.. How many other principals can you say that know that? His two teachers, PreK and K, were remarkable. Oh so your little one in Pre-K WILL have homework every night by the way.. Your kid will get an excellent education there. We had to relocate due to a job and miss Patrick Henry very much. Our new school, while having a high Greatschools rating, doesn't even come close to having the wonderful faculty as Patrick Henry. We miss Alexandria.

I feel so blessed that my child is attending this school. He is gifted and I'm constantly impressed with how hard the school administration and faculty work to keep him engaged intellectually and support his emotional needs. The school also truly views its diversity and inclusiveness as a strength and leverages it in a way that serves all the students and families. I love being part of the PHES community and can't imagine my child going anywhere else.

My daughter couldn't read when she started Kindergarten and that was one of my major concern when we first started. First day of school, her Kindergarten teacher promised that all of his students will be reading before the end of the school year. He was absolutely right, my daughter read fluently before the end of the school year. She is now in first grade. She is excited about reading and completes her homework by herself as soon as she is home from school. She now reads chapter books all by herself with no aide from an adult. She is doing such a wonderful job in all of her classes. This tells me that her teachers are doing such an excellent job and are very supportive. The principal, Mrs. Bynum, is very very kind and respectful and work hard on getting to know the parents, which is a plus for me. She cares and love every single one of her student. I am amaze at how wonderful she interact with the kids, parents and staffs. The staffs at Patrick Henry are very friendly and respectful.

My son, who is in 4th grade has been at Patrick Henry since Kindergarten. I've noticed many drastic changes in the school since Mrs. Bynum has been principal, and overall I am very pleased. Almost all of my son's teachers have been very dedicated to my son's learning and overall well-being. Even the school's administrators are excellent. Mrs. Bynum, is very engaged and knows most of the students by name. Down to the cafeteria staff, I always get the feeling that my children are cared for while at school. Most recently, I received a call from my son's teacher because the cafeteria staff were concerned because my son wasn't always making healthy food choices on days I didn't pack his lunch (e.g., he would only eat whatever snacks they had that day). My daughter just started Pre-K at Patrick Henry, and her teachers are no less dedicated to her overall well-being. For a public school, I must say that I am very impressed. The school is very diverse and many of the staff members make an effort to learn and speak other languages so that they can better communicate with parents who aren't native english speakers. There are also a lot of after school events during the year, such as literacy and math nights, family dances, family movie nights, etc. Overall, I am very pleased with Patrick Henry and its staff.

My son is in pre-K and he is reading. The teachers are dedicated. The low score on Greatschools.org does not represent this school, in my opinion. I will give PHES a rating of 6+.

The staff and teachers are nice, however, I feel that my 2nd grader was not challenged at all. He came home with 1 page math homework of 2+2 and 4+4.... he did this when he was in Kinder. I feel that the school did the very minimum requirement to teach our kids and our kids miss out on a lot. At home my 8 yr. 2nd grader was doing 2 digit multiplications where at school he was doing 2+2. Aside from this, the school was low average.

Our daughter is in the preschool program.. We LOVE it!!!! Her teacher and teachers aid are amazing. They are so patient and kind. The student to teacher ratio seems manageable as well. We have been so impressed with her growth and improvement. We think the principal is wonderful as is her entire staff. Something else we have LOVED is the diversity of the school. Im not sure of the exact number but over 25 countries are represented. What a wonderful way to live what we believe... Our child is getting to know children from all around the world. We absolutely recommend Patrick Henry.

The Patrick Henry ES staff are very dedicated, professional, hard working and approachable. The test scores have improved considerably since the new Principal is in charge. They keep parents informed and involved in all aspects. So far it has been a great experience for my child.

Patrick Henry has made major changes to our school since Mrs. Bynum took over. Most of our children are reading above grade level and I can speak for both of my kids they love to read and love books. Their test scores have improve greatly and they really enjoy their school. The teachers take the time to know the parents and don't hesitate to call or email if there is some concerns. Our test scores are not what is listed here and not sure what it takes to update but these scores are not correct. I wish I could attach the correct scores. I love that all the administrative takes the time to get to know you and know your name as soon you walk in the door. They keep you involve in all aspect of the school process and testing. The school is much better than what it use to be and each year is improving. They have tutors if children are behind and need assistance. The teachers stay late if a student needs help and if not they will email you and work with you. PH is an up and coming school which will soon be a Pre-k through 8 grade school making it more of a family for the children and easier for them to transition to High School.

My daughter has started 4th grade in this school and although I must admit, I was not impressed at all with the previous review on this school; Ms. Miller has been a fabulous teacher I don't think my daughter could be in better hands, the people in the TAG program have been very supportive in helping with the process for my daughter to get in the program. The school definitely needs some improvements but of course we cannot expect the school to do miracles if our kids don't have the right attitude "remember a good foundation starts at home" People always blame the schools but us as parents also need to take more responsibility on how we're raising our kids.

Posted: September 23, 2013

My daughter just started Kindergarten at Patrick Henry. Clearly the school has challenges it still needs to overcome, but the new Principal is excellent, the teachers seem wonderful and everyone is making a tremendous effort to improve the school. And I love the diversity! So far my daughter is really enjoying Patrick Henry.

We were NOT impressed with Patrick Henry Elementary. Our child's teacher seemed overwhelmed, harried, and was highly unprofessional. They constantly made mistakes with which child walked home versus taking the bus. We pulled our child out and are very pleased with the new private school that he is in. It was a horrible and stressful experience for our family and I would never recommend this school to anyone.
