As someone who attended this school for 7 years, I can say that if you want your child to grow up to be a self sufficient and independent teenager/adult, this school is great. This school shaped the person I am today and I firmly believe that if I had gone to a different school I would not have been as successful as I am. One of My main criticism for this is school is the ratio of students to teacher (30-1 in my experience) because at times is definitely limited how much individual attention and aid you could get from your teachers. I guess you could also see the positives in that as it can teach you to use critical thinking and solve your own issues, but it can be challenging if you are not that kind of person. While at times I did not love attending this school, I think in the long run it really will help your child become a self motivated and open minded person.

Montessori doesn't really seem to do much homework. Some of the teachers have little simple homework assignments, but I'm really not sure how well this is preparing students to go to other, non-Montessori schools in their future. I like that, in lower elementary, my student had time to be a kid and to go and play, but I worried in upper elementary that she wasn't being prepared enough for middle school.

The method is set up to encourage children to teach each other and themselves. The teachers are involved, but there are about 30 students to 1 teacher, and they're more of a guide than someone lecturing. This can work for self-motivated students, but has proven to be a problem for my lazy child who needs firm structure and guidance. Additionally, most of the teachers are both new to teaching and new to Montessori, so they're not the most effective at both guiding the students academically, nor working with their emotional needs.

I think this school tries to teach the usual morals that most schools teach (tolerance, compassion, free-thinking) but the parents (and therefore their students) tend toward elitism and intolerance of non-liberal, non-atheist viewpoints. They pretend to be tolerant while ganging up and shutting down opposing viewpoints in an orchestration of sickeningly sweet, logical fallacies.

There's plenty of bullying here. If your student is not very liberal-minded, is Christian, is Muslim, has a learning disability, or is otherwise different from the majority of the students at the school, they will be teased or talked down to by multiple students (and parents who aren't very left-wing and atheist will also be outright mocked and ridiculed by groups of other parents). Students at this school also tend to have an air of elitism (and so do parents) - one now-adult former student I know admitted that "we thought we were better than the non-Montessori students, because we WERE better."

This school is highly desired by parents and there's a long waiting-list. Unfortunately, after being lucky enough to make it through the lottery and be accepted, I ended up transferring my student out after giving it a four-year trial. Their unstructured approach to education did not work for my student, and left my gifted (but lazy and unmotivated) student behind in several subjects. There is also a lot of elitism and teasing that happens at that school, by both students and parents! And the teachers didn't seem to know how to respond to my student when she would cry 4 out of 5 days each week, because the other students were, once again, being cruel to her. If you're very left-leaning (politically), and/or you're fortunate enough to be a mom who stays home with your kids and can volunteer for everything, you'll love this school. If you have any hint of a conservative thought (yes, including moderates), are Christian, have no time to volunteer, or are low income, prepare to be mocked/disapproved by other parents and to have your student mocked and teased by other students. Given the fact that Maria Montessori was Catholic, this school is wholly intolerant of Christians (the staff are not, but the parents and students are), and they believe that anyone who doesn't believe their very liberal, atheistic viewpoints (and also doesn't worship the Montessori Method) is literally less-than, wrong, and stupid. The educational style at this school simply does not work for all students (only self-motivated kids who can work independently), and the culture among the students and the parents is horrible unless you are one of "them."

Excellent. Love this school. Authentic AMI Montessori. Not just about the grades, but lifelong learning.
