Manhattan is where many families (who are seeking off-post housing) choose to live when stationed at Fort Riley. It is about 20-25 minutes outside the base, but it is the only real area nearby that offers fun activities and nightlife. Poyntz Avenue should be the first stop for you to check out when you arrive. On the north end, it leads right up to the Mall, so shopping is convenient. It seems to be the old-town center for boutique shopping, cute hair salons, gift shops, and upscale, independently-owned restaurants. On my first visit to Manhattan, I got my hair done at Gaia Salon (owned by Aveda) and they were fantastic- would definitely go back! I also went shopping at some of the boutiques on Poyntz, and loved some of the styles they had to offer. For eating out, check out Della Voce, a classy Italian Restaurant, or Harry's, for a date night. For pizza, I can't imagine anything being better than AJ's NY Pizzeria!
