Fantastic school! As a former student, I can say that learning was actually fun and exciting at Steller. Previously, I had attended a public school where I was unmotivated and frustrated and absent around 15 days out of the year due to severe anxiety and stress.
However, after attending Steller, my grades improved dramatically. Plus, I was excited to go to school, as the students and teachers treated me with respect. Students are given more freedom and responsibility. While at Steller, I looked forward to class and was only absent 2 days out of the year. Needless to say, my academic interests skyrocketed.
If you have a kid who is independent-minded and the traditional public school system just doesn't seem to be right for them (or maybe it isn't challenging enough), don't hesitate to have them try it out.
If more schools modeled themselves after Steller, the education system in the US would be much more successful.

There are no locks on the lockers and many times you can find an array of student property in the hallway. No one steals there. The students are responsible for their choices and they have a student government set up to include all the students. Everyone has a say and are truly heard.

As a parent I was concerned about the core rule of self responsibility and accountability. All students (7-12 grade) are allowed to leave campus at will as long as they sign themselves out. After having a student there for 2 years, I recognize the value of the system in place. The students must be motivated to go to school but this school is organized to achieve that goal. In traditional school my child was always bullied and friendless. Not any more. At Steller the staff and students respect everyone for their uniqueness. It's ok to be different here and there is no expectation to fit into a perfect mold. Academically, socially, and in every way possible that a parent could hope for their child; this school and staff go above and beyond. As a parent thinking about this school, it's the best decision you could make to prepare your child for success in life. We moved back to Alaska specifically for this school.
