Gruening Middle School

As a parent, I’ve been really impressed with Gruening Middle School. The staff is incredibly supportive, and they genuinely care about the students’ success. My child feels welcomed and encouraged every day. The school has a great sense of community, and the range of activities keeps the kids engaged both academically and socially. It’s been a wonderful experience, and I couldn’t be happier with the environment they’re creating for our children!

Excellent! Teachers and counselors are engaging and work hard to create a school community.

Class sizes are very large and getting even larger. Some teachers cannot control their classes which results in more detentions, etc.

We had high expectations of this school but we have been very disappointed. Although there are some excellent staff there is a higher proportion of below standard teaching. We have to spend several hours a week teaching concepts that have not been taught correctly. My daughter maintains her honor roll status due to the study and teaching we do at home not the classes she attends. Some non teaching are extremely rude, do not expect a warm welcome. However the majority of students are very nice and this is the only reason I have not moved my child to different school.

This school like most in ASD have great teachers and garbage teachers. If your kid gets on one of the good "teams" then no doubt you will think this school is fantastic. I take issue with the staff administrators, specifically, principal, vice principal, and security staff. I personally have witnessed discriminatory attititudes towards military kids and their families. I believe this is a byproduct of the typical liberal elitest philosophies that ASD wholly embraces. They have actively encouraged the military chains of command to pressure parents and their children into modifying their behaviors for the sake of "safety". The kids that live on the JBER Richardson side are routinely counseled by the garrison commander and garrison CSM on "higher standards" of behavior than civilian family kids and the school administrators welcome this! This attitude along with a one size fits all approach to discipline in my opinion make this a poor school. If you are PCSing to JBER do not send your kids to this school. Get a zone exemption to a different school where they treat the military kids like every other kid as they should be.
