Over the course of several years and with 3 kids attending this school2 still currently enrolledweve grown increasingly disappointed with the administrations lack of responsiveness, compassion, and proactive care. When compared with similarly categorized schools nationwide, this institution falls short. The recurring pattern has shown a troubling disregard for students wellbeing and a reluctance to collaborate with parents, no matter how thoughtful or well-intentioned the feedback. Our concerns date back 4 years, when our oldest daughter was suspended for simply being honest. She had informed her teacher that while playing, her best friend fell from the bars and injured her arm. Rather than appreciating her transparency and concern for a fellow student, she was punisheda decision that baffled us. 4 years later, daughter 2 began K. Before school started, we voiced concerns about her assigned teachers cold and standoffish demeanor, knowing full well this would not be a good match for our daughters personality. The administration asked us to wait a month and see how things developed. Against our better judgment, we agreed. Sadly, the situation deteriorated, and despite our plea for a classroom change, it was denied. The result? Our daughter failed her kindergarten yeara direct consequence of avoidable circumstances. This year, we encountered another issue with our son in 5th grade. A personal conflict made it clear that a different teacher would be a better fit, and we made a formal request. Despite the presence of class vacancies, the administration declined to move him, offering no justification whatsoever. Beyond academic concerns, we also raised serious safety issues. Last year, we expressed that the process for picking up walkers in the parking lot was hazardous. We encouraged them to revise protocols before something unfortunate occurred...ignored. 2 weeks later, a child was struck. Only then were minimal changes implementeda clear case of reactive management when a proactive approach was both necessary and suggested. Weve provided input on 3 critical occasions, each dismissed without meaningful dialogue. 2 of these directly impacted our children, and one led to a kindergarten retention that could have been prevented. Principal Angulo has shown a repeated unwillingness to listen, cooperate, or act in the best interests of the students. Its hard not to conclude that the priority here is not childrens wellbeing, but administrative convenience

This school has changed a lot since C19. Teachers and administrators have changed not to the better sadly. The principal needs to really open her eyes and get in touch with what is going on at the school. It's the not the same as it was in past years

Prior to this year, I loved DVA. I thought it was the best school in Yuma. Now, after a few weeks of this new learning, I am missing KB. She always made things easy for us. The current administration is all over the place. Neither one of them seem 'in it' for the students. They seem to want the limelight. Shameful!

My son had private school education through 2nd grade. We switched him to DVA at 3rd grade and have had phenomenal teachers. I ignorantly thought paying private school tuition resulted in a better education, but I was very wrong. His teachers have been excellent!

Desert View is a great school with a not so great leader. Luckily its leader isnt the leader that is at its middle and high school. The principals are a joke. Friendly yes but a joke. The APs and office people do the brunt of the work at both schools. DVAs teachers are super but they are worked to the bone and only praised by AP. Its sad. The kids are happy there and they learn and grow. Just beware of the sweet kool aid the principals try to sell.

Both principals are among the best in Arizona if not the country. First, you have Weigel who is kind and cheery and is the face every one associates with DVA. Then, you have KB who is equally kind and compassionate. She openly shies away from the limelight but she is the one that is mostly discussed by my girls. They see her as beautiful, strong, intelligent, fashionable, and incredibly loving. She has become their role model. Both leaders are wonderful and I feel blessed to have them both in my childrens lives.

Character is certainly stressed in students and apparently it is supposed to be upheld in 'certain' employees. There are many employees the principal does not choose to enforce character with and it it a mystery as to why why picks those to target and those to let go with bad character. Meanwhile, the assistant principal, sits and witnesses EVERYTHING, and can say NOTHING. It's just sad.

The teachers at this school are creative and original in the ways that they are able to reach not one, but all of their students. They really make it so that students are having fun and are constantly engaged every day.

This school follows the seven character traits every single day. There is no need for a specific class to teach these skills because all of the staff members are trained and skilled in incorporating each character trait on a daily basis. This in turn has created virtually no bullying at this school, which is a breath of fresh air in relation to other schools in the area.

There are a couple of resource rooms available for those students that have learning differences, but honestly all teachers and staff handle students with learning disabilities with love and patience.

Every student is treated as equals because at this school they are truly seen as such.

Bullying is nonexistent in this school because if the simple fact that it is handled expertly and the students are held accountable for their actions. That being said, it is more of a positive, compassionate way of handling bullying so as to not embarrass the student for making a mistake.

I worked at DVA for several years. During my time there, there were many things I agreed and some things I did not agree with. I found most of the teachers to be incredible and some of them, to be lacking, but protected by the principal, so saying anything yielded no returns. My children thrived at DVA and I could not be more thankful for the education both of them received. They both left better people both academically and socially.
I also had the opportunity to work alongside the assistant principal, on a daily basis, for much of my time, at the school. I can say that our relationship was completely symbiotic and we had the utmost respect for each other. I saw her deal with both parents and students in ways that took my breath away. Likewise, she was the absolutely diplomatic when dealing with staff, even those, who were unkind to her, like the office manager. But she is a person who never let things like that get to her, although everyone saw the mistreatments. Nevertheless, I know the school is in great hands, because of her. KB is one of the best managers I have ever known and one of the best people I have ever worked with. If you get the chance to tour the school, please take the time to meet her. Shes a gem AND DVA is an amazing school, hidden in the Yuma valley.

After years of having our children at DVA we have decided to move them to another school. At first I thot it would be a hard decision but it was easy sense my kids were always being targeted by there teachers and the principle. It was easy to see to. They were constantly being pickt on and the principle was right in the mix with the teachers. It did not matter how many meetings we had where she assured me it would stop it didnt and she didnt stop her attacks. I know that people find her to be a great leader but I caution those fooled to beware of wolfes in lambs clothes. We were also fooled once until we found out the truth. DVA is a school that only cares about growing bigger and bigger and it is losing its magic in the process.

My stepchildren have been attending Desert View for their grade school years. Our oldest just graduated. The thing that makes the school different is that the staff knows the children more than just about grades. Our sons teacher and the assistaent principle asked us to come in for a meeting to talk about behavior. We were not happy but when we realized they were conserned about him emotionaly we realized they saw some things we had overlooked at home. That neeting changed our relationship with our son and it changed him completely. We will never be able to thank DVA enough for that. I remember Mrs KB saying it was her great pleasure to meet with us and share about our son and how wonderful he is as well as some of her observetions. It is my great pleasure to recommend Desert View to people because of her and all of the people that work there.

Leadership is okay. I rarely write reviews but today I saw something online that made me upset. The principal posted pictures of herself and one of the students in a hospital. While that may be a grand gesture I have had a sick child in a hospital and she has never visited and I am sure other parents have also had sick children that she's never visited. Her double standards are sickening. I much prefer the honesty of the teachers and the assistant to her fakc over the top lipservice. Yuck. What a foney.

The teachers and support staff are wonderful. The office staff is so so. The principal is unapproachable and the assistant is overworked but nice. If you want a school where your children will excell this is the place to send them. They will love it and it will feel like home after you get past the office ladys.

Our experiences at DVA have less than we had expected. The communications from administration, specifically the principal, regarding staffing changes has been lacking, especially when our childs class went through multiple teachers in a short period of time. It actually seemed as if the principal did not care about parent concerns or student wellbeing. Bullying was also an issue that was brought to her attention and she talked in circles and failed to do anything. Our son told us that the assistant principal was the one that finally acted on the situation. While she is much more direct than the principal and not nearly as fluffy, we appreciate her actions. The long and short of this review is that the school is supposed to be the best in Yuma but the lady in charge leaves quite a bit to be desired. We will look for another school next year in the hopes of finding a better fit and a better leader with a tad bit more integrity and honesty than she has shown us.

I was very scared of the principal because she only talked to me when things went wrong, She never listened to me and ultimately fired me for a small mistake. I never trusted her and now I wonder if I should have trusted KB.

When one of our children was talked to about a mild incident we understand that KB talked about the 3 Bees and made our child accountable for his actions according to the Bees. One of our children recieves additional help with her learning. DVA does a remarkble job with making sure all students recieve what they need. The only concern we ever had was with note lady. I can not tell who leads the school. When we applied it seemed like the lady with the office by reception was in charge. She was not overly nice or accommodating but she seemed efficient yet cold. The reception ladies were wonderful. The principal is very nice but our daughter does not talk about her. She's said the principal is happy but that's all she tells us. Our daughter talks about the light haired principal who has a strange name KAy Be. She likes her and says her friends are good when she is in the class. We don't know who runs the school for sure which is concerning. We can not give a good rating here.

Leadership at DVA is interesting. The office administrator seems to run things and the principal seems to ask her for permission to do every thing. On the other hand, the assistant principal deals with every thing head on and is completely respected by every one especially students and parents. The dynamics of the leadership is talked about by staff often and they all worry that the assistant will leave which leaves the secretary in charge.

I would describe my experience as mixed. My children until this year were both growing academically but one is starting to slip because of not having teachers. My child that has special needs is doing well but I know it is because the assistant principal is very involved in her growth. My other child is falling behind because of all the teacher changes. We have met with the principal but we have not gotten any answers all we get is stories and smiles. It is unnerving. Just tell us the truth. We love DVA. We drive across town to get our child there when there are many schools closer. The reason we choose DVA is its reputation, the teachers, and the overall school climate. We also, for the most part, believe in the administration: the district people, KB and the office ladies. We are struggling with the principal and the spin she puts on things. We really want renewed faith in the head leadership but we have lost confidence in her. The only reason our child is still at DVA is because of the assistant principal and the CEO. If you are considering a school in Yuma, this is somewhere you really want to investigate. It's an amazing place and my child is learning a lot. Just beware of the principal...if she seems too good to be true, go with that feeling. The rest of the staff is authentic. Great place.

Ok. This is tricky. Both principals are good but in different ways. One seems to need and seek attention and the limelite. The other does not in fact she runs from it but is instrumental in the schools success. The one that seeks attention tries to draw the other into it but she prefers not to be the focus. The main principal and her office lady love being the center of attention. This detracts from others and how hard they work.

I really love this school. It is a incredible place to work and one of the best places for children. I cannot state howmuch I believe in the teachers at DVA and howmuch I love the culture. We have been very pleased with the teachers at DVA until this year. This year there have been a lot of different teachers in our childs' classroom over six. There have been at least four subs and three teachers that have left. It is scary to think about how our childs' education is being infected.

Our children have been at DVA for a few years. We have been very happy until this year. In the past we dealed with Kb a lot and we respect her and find her fair. She is also to the point and honest. We like that. This year we have dealt with Weigel. She is very nice but cannot answer our questions about teachers and it makes us nervous. The school is a good school but with out teachers who stay all year it is not as good as it could be. We are worried about our kids futures and we want answers from the principal.

Good question. I was sold that the school is the best in the area and I was told that included the people that work there. What I found is the people are great. The principal is obviously only interested in appearances. The assistant principal is up front and offers advice to help people. The principal fires people on a whim and her secretary smiles an evil smile while everything happens. The two of them are not what I thought the school was about. Very unhappy with the whole sitution.

Desert View Academy is a school filled with nice students and parents. The environment is positive and if something happens that is against the rules the assistant principal is quick to handle situations in an appropriate fair way. She keeps order in the school and that is nice to see and be apart of. Teachers for the most part work very hard but there are some that do not and there lack of work ethics is ignored by the principal. It may be because she has favorites or because she knows their parents. She is a nice lady but only remembers student and staff names if it benefits her. I worked there for a while and she never could remember my name which was sad. I am not sure the staff gets the credit they deserve for all they do for students and familys. The principal will sometimes come around and leave post it notes for teachers but that is not the same as telling people they are doing a good job. The assistant at least does that and she texts the staff good and funny things all the time. The office ladys try to support the whole mission statement but it is hard because their boss is mean and twofaced. I love the students, parents and most of the teachers. The school is really terrific. A few of the leaders could take some classes on how to deal with others evenly an fairly. If you are looking for a teaching position in Yuma only apply if you are friends with the principal or her secretary. If you are looking for a great school for your children get them on the list for Desert View and make sure you meet BOTH principals. Good luck!

Teachers at DVA are out of this world. Our children attended until mddle school and they were very successful.

My husband and I were disappointed last night when overheard several young ladies talking about DVA students and their experiences at the school in a way that made me ill. We were sitting next to them and could not help but listen after they said DVA. The school is fantastic and the things these women were saying were horrible. They talked poorly about students and people they work with.

We assumed they were teachers celebrating cinco de mayo and we were sad to hear them say what they did about students and working at DVA. We gathered that the two are moving but we were still saddened by their negativity.

Please do not listen to negative talk from people like that. DVA is a true gem and a wonderful school.

I am at DVA a lot because my children attend the school and I am involved in their education. One thing I have noticed is that the leadership style of the principals is very polar. One smiles and addresses very little. She is lovely principal of school and beloved by all, The assistant principal is the one that walks right into storms and deals with problems. She has the respect of many but I have a feeling its a silent respect. I am sure she doesn't know her impact. Before DVA I often wondered which approach I would prefer and I believe it is the latter. KB always calls things like she sees them and she is not afraid to ask questions. I respect that. She also has a core group of teachers that seem to believe in her and follow her direct approach. My friends and i all appreciate that and it is because of the staffs honesty that I refer the school. Yes my children have grown but there is something special at DVA because of the leadership. It is well worth looking into if you are considering switching schools or if you are PCSing to Yuma.

This week was a great week for my kids. They had two christmas concerts and they were both great. The whole DVA staff was welcoming and helpful. If you are looking for a school that is strong in academics and that stresses behavior education DVA is the place for you. We have a great principle and an assistant principle that makes sure order is kept. The two of them and the awesone teachers make DVA the best school in Arizona. There is no where else I would send my chidren.

My daughter start DVA last year. She had trouble. The principle and sssistant principle call me to talk to me about her progress. My daughter have to do kindergarten again. I was so sad. I just have a meeting with assistant principle and lady that helps my daughter. They say she is doing very good. I was not so sure but they know her very good. I am a teacher at DVA. I have never worked in an environment that is so fast paced, positive, challenging, and fun. DVA has the best students in the county and they work harder than any students I have ever been around. I can also attest to how hard each staff member works and I can absolutely say that our administration is by far the best I have ever worked with. We have had our children at DVA for two years. Overall, we are very happy with their education and their teachers. In addition the office staff, Mrs Anita, Mrs Weigel and Mrs KB are extremely helpful. The special education teacher Mrs Trugeon is also wonderful. She goes out of her way to meet the needs of students that need extra help.

I have been fortunate enough to be on both the school and parent side of DVA. When I was a teacher, I knew that student concerns would be handled by Mrs KB. If she wasn't around, there was no use referring them to the office. Nothing happened. I still see the same. Both principals are very approachable and kind. Their leadership style is just very different.

DVA has a very good reputation in Yuma for how the whole staff effectively supports students with learning differences. I credit Mrs KB and Mrs Trugeon for that. The two of them have build a strong program and are constant advocates for students. I have seen them in meetings almost every day and if I remember right, those meetings are to help students with special needs. I tip my hat to those ladies. They are incredibly patient and hardworking.

The administration at DVA is very good and very approachable. One thing that bothers us is that we never see Mrs KB receive credit for all she does. That woman is constantly on the move and she seems to have many of the answers parents and students ask. Just yesterday, it was her who was sitting with very active students at an assembly trying to keep them focused. One little boy was actually in her lap most of the time. Yes, Mrs Weigel is great but Mrs KB is never recognized for all she does and we love and respect her very much. She does wonders with our children.

My children have had a wonderful time at DVA. They are flourishing and both seem love school. My issue and caution is regarding the office staff and principal. They do not seem to value parents and only seem interested fluff and school image and more fluff. Parents concerns seem scoffed at and minimized. Yes it's a good school with fantastically caring teachers but administration seems our of touch except KB who will face problems head on and is very very honest. Sometimes her honesty can hurt because she tells it like it is but overall she is highly respected. She's not nonsense and nothing is sugar coated. She'll do whatever she can to make every person happy. She doesn't put up walls or blocks like the office staff and principal. My praise is for the teachers and how hard they work. My caution is for people there that turn a deaf ear to issues. Great school = yes as long as there are no issues.

This is a subjective question. I have found the leadership to be opposite in how they approach issues. One is very political and one is very honest. The school is doing well so they are effective the perception is just very different. If you want sunny stories go to one of them if you have problems go to the other one but be very ready for the truth. They seem bring a good balance to the school and while I don't like the big differences in style at least I know who I can go to to be heard.

I don't usually write comment about any thing but I have had some very great experience with people at Desert View in particular the assistant principle I have gone to her with problem that were not really related to school and she has listened and offered solution. I really think she has the answer to many things. I value her advise and I think she is one of the smartest people I have ever met if she does not know something she type on her computer and find answer and she does it really fast. She also offer hugs when she see people are not right. I like Desert View for a long time. My kids have done very well at the school. the teachers and every body are super helpful and kind. The one thing I remember most about my time in Yuma and with DVA is the positive leadership. There is no one else more kind and focused on relationships than Mrs Weigel. She's incredible. Likewise Mrs KB on the surface seems to be the opposite but she loves and cares for people just as much. She's just more direct which takes people back know if they don't know her heart that is completely dedicated to students parents teachers and the school. I worked with DVA staff for about a year. I found everyone to be helpful and approachable. There were days I would go to the school just to see KB. She always without fail had a kind word and a smile no matter what she was doing. The whole staff is incredible but since I have left it has been her that has kept in contact. U appreciate that. I was very impressed with the special education department. I came from a different fields and working with DVA staff I learned a lot about special education. I learned that the teacher and administrator fight for the students and they work very long hours with out complaint. They also love the children and parents and do whatever is best for them. I have been a part of the DVA team for several years. I can honestly say that have felt like a family member since the very first day I stepped onto the campus, which was then located on Kennedy Lane. All of the teachers, staff and administration were warm and welcoming. Everyone jumped in and helped me learn 'the ropes' and there was plenty to learn, as DVA is a rigorous environment for both teachers and students. Along those lines, I have never worked at a place where teachers and staff work so hard, simply because they love their students and their craft. Likewise, it is very common to see administrators at the school from very early in the morning to the early evening hours. I am convinced they work just as hard as the teachers, for the same reasons: love of teachers, students, parents and the school. I cannot speak highly enough of DVA. Every grade level, the specials teachers, the special education department, the office staff, the cafeteria personnel, the custodial staff, and the central office staff are extraordinary. In addition, I would be remiss if I neglected mentioning the DVA students and parents. I've never worked in a place where parents were welcomed as volunteers and celebrated as partners in education. If you are an educator looking for an outstanding school to join and make a home, DVA is the place for you! If you are a parent looking for the very best for your child(ten) please tour the school. There's no place I'd rather work and there's no other school I'd recommend for students in kindergarten through fifth grades.

DVA is our school of choice but this year we have seen a lot of changes. Teachers are leaving and students are withdrawing. Teachers and staff has a game face on and smiles on there faces but something just seems off. Both principles are approachable and friendly. but something is not right. we cannot place our finger on it. We know that the school is number one on the Amerit test and we herd that the special education program is rated high by ADE. the special education teacher and assistant principal are to thank for that but those two women seem very overworked and look much more tried than they did last year. The principle looks just as happy and cheer as ever. She does not seem to age. Why are so many people leaving? DVA teachers are the greatest and we love the school but something is amuck. Please fix whatever it is soon and please keep the good teachers, and Mrs Anita, Mrs Margo, Mrs Sandra, Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Trugen, and Mrs KB. They all work very hard.

I have read a lot of comments on social media over the past few days about how horrible DVA is. Instead of post to the negativity I decide to post something positive on this site. I have my daughter at the school for three years and I have nothing but positive experiences. I seen all teachers work very hard and I seen administration very visible each and every day. The only grumblings I EVER heard been about inconsistencies and favoritism shown to particular staff members by one administrator and that is the opposite of other administrator who from what I heard treat everyone the same and hold everyone to the same high standard. I had dealings with both and found them to both be pleasant, approachable, knowledgable, and cartable. I see them both as very best of DVA. I do hope the social media posts stops because is is the best school in Yuma. For sure.

My daughter has special needs. Before bring her to DVA she struggle a lot. We could not understand why she was not learn like her peers. Once she start at DVA the teachers notise she need extra help. The past two years she has thrive in her classes and she is keep up with her friends. She feel success and she feel smart. Leadership at DVA is effective. Mrs Wiegel is the principal and she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She hugs the kids and makes parents feel welcome. Ms KB is the vice principal. She is friendly and funny. She also hugs the kids and makes parents feel welcome. Her sense of humor is what makes us seek her out. Mrs Anita runs the office very good. She answers any and all parent questions with a smile and she is very efficient. Teachers and staff are also efficient and loving. The school is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I have the pleasure of having my children attend DVA and I could not be happier. Previously, we were at a district school and our children struggled daily with their academics. My husband and I didn't feel that our children were getting all that they needed and made the decision to leave and go to DVA after room became available to us. Our decision to move has been the best we have made in our children's education! Daily, our children come home and are eager to tell us about their day and what they learned that day. My youngest, who is in second grade, can be a bit rambunctious and has had a few day in which they "got in trouble". At DVA there are two sets of school rules which everyone abides by, one of which is based on something called Whole Brain Teaching. My child has a bit of a problem following these rules at times and must practice these at recess. While most parents would be upset at this, I am ok with this. It is teaching my child responsibility and the value of following directions, no matter how unimportant they may seem at the time. Since we have started at DVA, these instances have dwindled and the confidence in my children has skyrocketed! MY children are not just another body in the class. They are individual students with different needs than their peers and are treated as such. DVA teachers work hard to individualize the learning of every student in their class. Finally, the leadership at DVA is far above anything that I have ever seen at any other school in town. It is not uncommon to see administration walking about campus talking with students and teachers. In particular, Mrs. KB is always around campus when I have visited for various reasons. At first I thought she was the principal, though I have since learned she is actually the assistant principal. To that end I vary rarely see the principal around, which is discouraging, but I am thankful that DVA has Mrs. KB. She is a warm spirit with a smile on her face no matter when I see her. I think it is important for all to understand that DVA runs unlike any school you have ever seen. As happy as I am with DVA, I do wish that the principal would be as much of a presence as Mrs. KB is. It does seem that there is a bit of inconsistency in leadership. Thank you DVA teachers and Mrs. KB, because of you, I know my children are valued and are treated as such in their daily learning!

DVA is an amazing school with many wonderful teachers. We have been here for four years and have loved it. Mrs. Weigel is the most involved principle that I have ever met. But there seems to be a huge problem in second grade. My other child loves it but my 2nd grader is very unhappy at school. My child has lost confidence and is constantly yelled at never feels successful. One time had to walk laps Around in circles during recess chanting I will make my teacher happy. How can I expect my student to be happy if the teacher never looks happy. I am not the only parent who has had issues with 2nd grade either. We love DVA but are considering pulling our 2nd grader before it's too late. This is not a reflection of the entire school but a negative part that needs to be fixed!

I worked at DVA for several years. I loved the students, parents, and staff. I can honestly say that working there was one of the hardest jobs I have ever had in my life. It was also a job I loved because of the students and people I worked with. At DVA, the teachers and administrators go well above that of other schools. Teachers put in well over 40 hours per week. They work on weekends holidays and vacations. They do all of that because they all believe all of their students can grow and achieve great things. Administration is also pretty good. Deb Weigel is pretty much the face of the school. She goes out of her way to make people happy. KB is the glue that holds everything together. She goes out of her way to make sure everything is just right and to make sure everything is fair. She is consistent and very much respected by teachers, students and families. The office and custodial staff are equally great. If you are looking for a school that will make a huge difference in your child's life you need to at least tour DVA. It is by far the best school in the area.

The second week of school just started. It was just as great as last week. I heard from friends that there kids first days were not so good. I cannot imagine. My children are happy and they cannot stop talking about DVA. At dinner, they ask us to speak in full sentences and they use sign language. We think is some sort of program that all the teachers use and it must be effective because both my first grader and my third grader are having a lot of fun.Mr Klemme and Mrs Kelso are wonderful. They are both outtathisworld. My husband and I also met Mrs Wiggle. She made us feel like family the the ladies in the office equally great. Margot helped us allot with enrollment and Anita seems to know the answers to allot of things. They smile all the time even when there are a lot of people in the office. There are so many people there that we think are great. The other principal Miss Kb like the toy store is constantly on the move smiling and laughing. She has also been helpful. I cannot think of one thing that has not been great about DVA. Except when we pick up our kids in the afternoon sometimes It can get a lithe hairy but we have been told it gets allot better. The people in the parking lot are very nice in the 120 degree weather and believe it or not they are always smiing. Overall, we are thrilled we decided to put our children in DVA.

I want to give a public praise to the staff at DVA. Yesterday was the first day of school and it was incredible. The entire staff was dressed in aqua shirts and black bottoms so it was easy to know who worked for the school. They were also all smiling and helpful in the morning they waked up to us and welcomed us when we walked up to the school and after school they walked my children to the car. It was like no other first day of school we have ever been apart of. My children had rave reviews about their teachers and new friends. They also said they met the principals on the playground. We saw them greeting people in the morning and walking students to cars in the afternoon. I did not think principals did that. The whole experience was neat. This is going to be a great year.

We recently found out that we are moving out of Yuma. We had hoped to be here for another 1-2 years. The move was a surprise and telling our children they will be switching schools was very hard. They've been at DVA for a while and really love it. From the teachers to the principals everything is out of this world. This is a school that deserves many good reviews and many great families. I was fortunate to be a teacher at DVA. During my time there I felt supported by both my team of teachers, parents, and administration.Mrs Weigel was very supportive. In addition I cannot tell you how many times KB, came into my classroom, to just visit and be a part of what was going on. She always offered guidance, support, and a good joke. Today was the last day of school at DVA. It has been a fantastic year and our memories are bittersweet. We were only at the school for one year but threwout that time we came to see why every one raves about DVA. My son has some learning difficulites and the beginning of the year was rough for him and our family. I feel blessed that his teacher, the assistant principal and the special education teacher worked with him and us to help him be successful. He sobbed today when we left the school and he begged for us not to move so he oculd return in the fall. His love for his teacher, his special education teacher and for the assistant principal is apparent. It is equally apparent that they love him and wish him all the best in the future. As a military spouse the first thing you do when you get orders is find a new school for your children. As I reached out to other military spouses Desert View Academy was highly recommended. I could not be more proud of how well my children have done at DVA and how much they have been challenged academically. It is the BEST school we have attended. The staff is extremely hardworking and friendly. Administration is very involved and makes an effort to get to know their students. If you are looking for an elementary school in Yuma DVA is by far the best. It will be incredibly hard to find another school that challenges their students AND is a school of character. My son has been attending DVA for two years. I have been extremely happy with the education he has received. The reason I am writing this review is that I want to comment on the level of emotional support and advocating school staff do on his behalf. Specifically, I cannot thank Mrs Weigel and Mrs KB enough for working with him and for trying to understand how to best meet his needs. My children have been at DVA for two years. They love it and so do we. The school does so much for my kids. If there is ever an issue the teachers are quick to respond and so are Weigel and KB. I sometimes wonder how the principals are able to be so involved. I constantly see KB talking to students and encouraging them. I know she deals with discipline but I think she also does a lot of counseling on top of that. My kids absolutely love her and love talking to her. Weigel is such a fun person and she makes everyone around her happy. I think they are the absolute best and they are one of the reasons DVA is so amazing. We are new to Desert View. We could not be happier. The whole staff is incredible. We have felt welcomed from the very first day and it just gets better. Not only does my daughter's teacher speak to me every day when I pick her up but other staff greet her as well. Today, she lit up and ran to a blond woman for a hug. It was the assistant principal Miss KB. She knew my daughter by name and was so lovely to her.she immediately introduced herself to me and was just as friendly as the office staff and principal. When reviewing schools in the Yuma area I found Desert View to be the most helpful. I called in the spring time just before moving & had called other schools to see what programs they had & was not impressed with the front office staff. They were very short with answers & quick to rush you off the phone. Calling Desert View was different. Ms. Margo was extremely helpful & seemed to be very knowledgeable in the school & activities that we're going on in the school. She seemed genuinely happy to speak about Desert View. Honestly this was the reason I chose to bring my daughter to this school. The 1st impression lasted with me to the day we went to walk thru the school. I immediately liked my daughters teacher & other staff I was introduced to also.
This school is such a welcoming school & yes I'd recommend them to others that are on the fence of switching their children to a better & more organized school. We started the beginning of kindergarten at a different school. My son was being bullied and his spirit was absolutely broken. I was nervous about switching schools so we went and toured Desert View. He got in the car and immediately asked if he could go to school there.

The atmosphere in this school is like nothing I've ever experienced. You can tell that every single person loves being there- from teachers, office staff, to the students.

His teacher and teachers aide are literally nothing short of AMAZING. Their passion is so obvious. They took my sons broken spirit and helped put him back together. You can tell they are extremely attentive to each student and can even tell me his interests and what exactly he ate out of his lunch box that day. I can ask how he's doing in a subject and they will know off the top of their head without having to check the gradebook. They expect more out of the children academically and support them each step of the way.

The principal is so caring and accessible to both parents and students. Her amazing leadership and focus on both academics and character make this school feel like a family.

We have to drive over 25 minutes to get there but I assure you, it is worth every sacrifice to have my son attend this school. Having been to another "good" school here in Yuma, I can confidently say to you there is no comparison to Desert View.

Our children love DVA. When we first learned that the school was moving to a new location we almost decided to try our neighborhood school because it is much closer than driving into town to DVA. now that the first quarter is behind us we are thrilled we decided to stay. We love the teachers, principal, assistant principal and other staff. Everyone goes out of there way to make sure students get what they need. When ever there is a problem with any behavior Mrs KB talks to students about making good choices and about doing what is right. My kids love her and are very comfortable going to her with any kind of issue. Mrs Weigel is absolutely amazing. She is always smiling and friendly. Both ladies are very approachable. The office staff are kind and the teachers are without a doubt the best in the area. We are moving to a new duty area within the next two years. My child has been on the school's waiting list for several months. We finally got the call last week that she was accepted. Even though school already started and she was going to another school we accepted. We were greeted by first by Margo who showed us all around the school and made us feel welcomed. We love the new school and ALL of the staff. This year, we have been impressed with how responsive everyone is to fixing issues that have already risen. For example, there is a terrible gridlock of cars picking up kids at the end of the day. It seems like all of the teachers, the principals and other staff are working hard to fix the issue. We have never been at a school where the staff worked so hard to fix something that wasn't working. The principals and teachers are outside in 110 degree weather smiling and trying to make everyone feel special. With attitudes like that we are confident that the end of day pick up will get ironed out and run more smoothly in the days to come.
All in all, we wouldn't send out children to any other school and we are excited for a great school year.

My daughter started at DVA last year. She had some tough spots and the school administration and teachers rallied to her side. We are grateful for how much the staff at the school care about her and the other students. not only did she have a great year and earn good grades but she also learned some important life skills. The only homework my daughter had was reading. We appreciate the fact that the teachers know we have lives outside of school and don't send home lots of homework. Our child learned everything she needed during the school day and at night we just read with her. Love that.

The staff at DVA are wonderful. Our children have gone to DVA for three years. During that time, we have had outstanding teachers. They always go above and beyond what is required. My husband and I especially like the principals. Mrs Weigel is always out front greeting students and Mrs KB is equally accessible. We have seen Mrs KB at Sam's Club, Olive Garden, and Harkins. I have been looking at new schools in our new duty area for my child and I have been reading comments on this website to try and find one that is close to DVA. We are struggling to find one that compares. The staff is out of this world and Mrs Wegiel and Mrs KB are phenomenal. Every time we visit the school we felt welcome and important. I cannot say enough about this school. My children have attended DVA for 3 years. They love it. This week was testing week. My daughter's could not wait to get to school to take tests. The principals greeted them in the morning and awarded prizes to students for paying attention to their tests. I never liked tests and I have no idea what those ladies do to get kids excited about tests but it works. The whole school is amazing. All the teachers care about my children and that is comforting. I recommend DVA often and I could not imagine sending my girls anywhere else. If you are on the fence about the school, don't be. Check it out. You will be glad you did. It's an A++ school.

Fantastic Charter school with teachers that really care about each and every student. We are a military family and have lived many places. We were very nervous about moving to Yuma because we had heard such terrible things about the schools. If your child is working above grade level they are adequately challenged and allowed to soar without being held back. They have an Odyssey of the Mind program that has won the State championships two years in a row in some age levels and made it to Worlds as well. They will be competing in Michigan this year. I have heard great things about their resource program and the support given to special needs children. The school is growing and moving to a new location. The only reasons I have given four stars instead of five are: lack of parent support, no on-site guidance counselor, and lack of an anti-bully program. Other than that I was thrilled to have my children attend this school and would do it again if I had the chance.

This was my daughter's first year at Desert View. It has been a true joy to have her there. We are moving at the end of the month and we are finding that the schools in our new town don't compare. The staff at desert view are very caring and compassionate. My daughter had a rough time at the beginning of the year and her teacher and the assistant principal worked with her to help her fit in and become the student we all knew she could be. We are new to Desert View this year and we could not be happier with the school, the teachers, and the principals. Our children actually love going to school. They come home each day with great stories to tell. There attitudes are great and we believe it is totally due to the staff at the school. In edition to the teachers the principals know our children. We are moving back to Yuma in a few months and we just started looking at schools in the area. We have lived there before and our kids attended public, private and online schools before enrolling at Desert View. After seeing that our kids favorite teacher is now the assistant principal we will be enrolling all of our children there. The principal and vice principal are very visible and they are extremely involved in everything. We see them all the time and the kids love them as much as their teachers. We have been pleased with the quality of teaching. My student struggled at the beginning of the year to meet the high expectations but eventually understood the requirements. HOWEVER- the administration is horrible. The only amicable front office member is Margot and the leadership is completely jaded. Sometimes it seems like they are running a concentration camp instead of an elementary school.

Desert View is an awesome alternative to traditional under performing public schools. I enrolled my 3 children at DVA and they flourished there. They went from falling far below to meets or exceeds in all core subject areas in the first 2 quarters of the school year. For the parents that want to see how well educators do when left to their own teaching devices and merits, our public charters are the way to go. They do far more with less funding and without all the bureaucratic red tape and teachers unions our traditional public schools use. These educators aren't teaching to test they are actually teaching core subjects along with good character traits. Be respectable, be responsible and be safe!

I just finished going to DVA I have been there kinder through 5th Grade. Through all these years I have learned so much. Not just about math, social studies, and other subjects. I also learned how to be a better friend and learned lots of character. And got lots of friends. Sometime the teachers go hard on you but some of them are really nice and fun. My favorite activities were the pennies for patients fundraiser and pool day. I really enjoyed my 6 years at DVA. Sometimes they will push you hard to do something. This school has people that were great teachers. They really connected with students. They were caring, respectful, loving, and awesome. This school is horrible. They fire everyone that the students like. The principal made some vice principle so then she could help with writing. The assistant principle thinks she owns the whole place. I am responding to a post that states it is a requirement for the staff to post positive reviews and comments about DVA being an excellent school and positive comments about the principal. Great Schools was running a contest, and a school was going to be awarded $5000. The requirement was to post a minimum of 10 reviews during the month of May to be eligible for the contest. Staff and parents were encouraged to post reviews regarding their experience at Desert View Academy. Our administrators never required us to post. I love teaching at Desert View Academy, and have every confidence that my own children are receiving a top notch education from caring staff and administrators.

My son has attended DVA for two years. I am so impressed that everyone knows each child and even takes the time to say hi when they see them in a store. The teachers are great! They are really invested in him living up to his potential and communicate with me often. I see a lot of complaints regarding the office staff in these reviews, however I would have to say that is unwarranted, they have been great to us always. I wouldn't have my son go anywhere else to school. We love DVA!

Both of my kids have had a wonderful experience at DVA. The teachers and support staff are dedicated to helping each student. The principal is enthusiastic and inspiring. Character education is a prominent and school-wide focus. I have seen other reviews say they focus too much on testing and I have not found that to be true at all. I volunteer in my kids' classrooms on a weekly basis and I have found the focus to be on getting each student to understand material and concepts, not test prep. I like that they have small groups and interventionists that provide another layer of ensuring all kids get a quality education.

Desert View has been such a blessing for both of our boys. Our oldest son has been here since Kindergarten and soon will be heading to 4th grade. We absolutely love the character based education and most of all the staff and teachers. They truly care. This year our son had AIMS and he was a bit nervous. The first day, all the staff were out front cheering and high-fiving all the kids. In fact, most days you'll see our principal at the gate, greeting every student with a handshake. Any concerns we've ever had have been appropriately addressed (I was worried about some of the new technology courses and was completely assured by the staff about privacy and their media usage). Although our oldest has thrived here, we weren't sure how our youngest boy would do. He's had a phenomenal year. Kindergarten has changed just in the past 4 years but I find that the teachers are truly looking for the student's best interest. If you're looking for a school, DVA provides an A+ education in a safe environment, where parents and teachers work together in partnership.

Over the last several years I have worked in multiple schools, and have found Desert View Academy to be one of the most student- centered educational facilities in the area. DVA has high standards for both their students and their staff. Many feel as though this is equates to a single-minded focus on testing. However, as with many professions, we use testing to collect information about our students so that we can best meet their educational needs. If you want your son/daughter to enjoy an above average education in the city of Yuma, then this is the school to attend.

I am a first grade teacher at Desert View Academy and could not be happier where I teach. It is so great to work at a school with so much support, parent involvement and sense of community. As a teacher it is nice to know that your classroom size will never be above 26 students. Also that each grade level has one interventionist ( aid ) per grade level. We focus a lot on small group instruction which can help us target all ranges of students. We do not just help one, but set our schedules, classrooms and mind on helping all of those who walk into our classroom. It is also a plus that we have so much technology in our classrooms. It is amazing how much my students have learned this year in technology class, and how they are applying it in the classroom. I think others need to know how fantastic this school is, and how hard the teachers and staff work to keep this schools amazing reputation going as an A plus performing school.

Desert View Academy is truly an extraordinary school. Our students educational achievements are forged on the most influential and long lasting foundation there is... CHARACTER. Not only do we teach the six traits of character but it is our school's culture. Most recently our "Because we care" motto helped raise $14,000 for Pennies for Patients. Our students are being taught to live out Caring, Fairness, Citizenship, being Trustworthy, Responsible, and Respect. What an amazing community these children will one day make as they live out their character. Additionally, DVA's personalized teaching simply rocks. Students of all levels receive interventions. Whether it's to close some gaps to achieve benchmark or to thrust them yet to a greater level by raising the bar and challenging those that have already exceeded. Both my kids have been recipients of this personalized attention. Their foundation at DVA greatly influenced their success in the years that followed. My 16 yr old daughter has recently been invited to apply for the Flinn Foundation Scholarship. Desert View Academy (DVA) is where I work, where I send my kids, and where my heart is. As a military spouse I take my kids' educations seriously and look for excellent schools so that when we move my kids aren't far behind, but rather ahead of the curve. DVA provides quality education with heart and character. I'm sure there are many schools that educate Yuma youth and do so well, but DVA does it best. I am proud to work at DVA and strive, like all of our staff, to provide our students with knowledge and skills to prepare them for the future. DVA is leaps and bounds ahead of schools with technology integration programs nationally recognized by the Department of Defense and has state ratings of excellence. I've known Desert View Academy since 2007 when my oldest child was enrolled as a 1st Grader and I still have 2 kids there. The teachers are amazing and have very interesting teaching methods which help my kids thrive and succeed academically. The principal is very professional, has very strong leadership traits and her office is always open to everybody. All staff of DVA make sure that all students are empowered with what they need to help them succeed and become good citizens in the future.

Desert View Academy is an amazing school!! I can not say enough wonderful things about the school! Have two children that go to DVA one of my kiddos has some special needs, I was extremely nervous about putting my child with special needs in a Charter School I was not sure if they would have the resources needed. Before placing my children at DVA I met with the Principle and the supportive staff, I left the meeting in tears, I was overwhelmed with tears of joy. They were so supportive and positive about having my child there. I knew there was no other school in Yuma that my kids should go to. I am very pleased with the education and attention both my kids get. The Principle is AMAZING!! She greets the kiddos with a hug, hand shake or high five every morning as they walk into school, she knows every student by name! To me that shows how much she cares about her students!!!! In the mornings there is staff that lines the walk way greeting the kids as well. This school takes pride in our kiddos education, they nurture our kids and encourage them to do their best!! Bottom line.....DVA is the best school in Yuma!!

Desert View Academy (DVA) is an outstanding school. Having taught for over a decade, I have been exposed to a plethora of school cultures and instructional ideologies. I have found that DVA is head and shoulders above other educational institutions. The success of the school can be attributed to committed leadership, dedicated staff, devoted parents, and focused students. Those four elements are entwined, so that the school environment is much like a family, with each member working toward the same goal, the success of all students. The school s curriculum is excellent, but it is how the curriculum is implemented that makes a difference and sets this school apart from others. At DVA, the faculty assesses each student, in order to determine his/her needs, and then, an individualized educational plan is put into action. With support like that, all students have equal opportunities for success. In addition to individualized instruction, students are also encouraged to become better citizens, as evidenced in the school s character-trait based practices. I highly recommend DVA, as the best school of choice in Yuma.

Exceptional school! Both of my children have attended this school since they where in kindergarten. My oldest child just left DVA last year and is in middle school now, making A's and B's...though there were struggles in reading and math. I credit DVA though the years building up my childs confidence and abilities. My youngest is about to leave DVA and I could not be more confident in how the next years will go. I have toured a couple of Yuma middle schools recently and when they found out my children attended DVA, both schools told me that they have always been pleased with how DVA students perform and their repectfulness for peers and staff. I am so grateful for our elementary years at DVA and feel I have given my children the best start to their future educational goals.

This is a terrible school on many levels. If your child is a good student and a good test taker, he or she will do well at this school. Some of the teachers are competent however, some are marginal. Desert View Academy is only concerned with test scores and nothing else. The students spend a lot of time practicing for the AIMS Test. Do not waste your time sending your children to this school. When your child attends school somewhere other than Yuma, they will be behind. The principal is not to be trusted, she will say or do anything to protect her school and to keep her test scores high. If your child is having any problems, this is not the school for them. Test scores are the only thing this school is concerned about. If you want your children to get a poor education but have good test scores, then this is the school for you. They have minimal resources to offer students. Participation by parents in the PTO is simply a joke. The school, has to almost trick parents into attending PTO meetings. ATTEND AT YOUR OWN RISK, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!!!........

My children attended Desert View Academy and while I agree that the staff is not exactly A grade, everyone has also stated that the teacher quality is above standard. In Yuma we are not presented with many options and with so many substandard public schools, you have to know when to pick your battles. If you send your child to school in uniform everyday with the appropriate materials, you won't have to deal with the office staff! Our kids are not properly prepared for higher education in Yuma. The way to plan for this is to give them the best teachers possible with the most challenging curriculum that they can handle. Desert View Academy is one of the only public schools in Yuma where you will find this combination. There are two other schools in Yuma that make the grade but good luck with getting your children in to them.

Thank you to all of you for your honesty, after reading all of the reviews and how horrible the staff there is, I'm glad that now after reading all this I will not be sending my kids to that school. Such a shame because it sounded like a really good school.

My child attended DVA from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I am delighted on how the charter school offers encouragement and teach individually because every child has different needs. The school offers character education, and is well recognized for it. My son is now an AVID student, with AIMS scores that meets or exceeds performance levels. I would definitely recommend this school to parents that care for their child's educational and individual growth. :)

As a parent who was very concerned with the extremely poor education system in Yuma, Desert View Academy stands alone above the rest of the schools. The teachers are amazing and are always helping my children in the necessary areas. They also encourage them to succeed and improve. The school encourages and cultivates character development. It also offers computer, art, music and physical education to complete a well-rounded elementary program.

I have two children that have attended Desert View Academy for the last three years, and I couldn t be happier with the school. It seems to get better and better each year. Every teacher we have had has encouraged my children and set them up to succeed from day one. They recognize their strengths and weaknesses in learning and work with them at their level so children aren t getting frustrated or discouraged or bored with the work. I love the incorporation of interventionist and small groups. In my first grader s class, if she does poorly on an assignment the teacher will sit with her and go over and correct every problem she missed and makes sure she understands the material. Both of my children are reading above their grade level. I continually see improvements in their work from week to week. Communication between the teachers and parents is great. Students bring home daily planners that let me know of any problems or events coming up. The school also uses Power House School online which allows me to check my children s assignments and grade. Any time I have had a concern or a problem I was able to email the teacher, and I quickly received a response that same day.

My daughter has attended Desert View Academy the past three years. Each year she has had a great teacher. She has excelled in reading partially due to the great AR program this school offers. Each teacher has pushed her to do her best academically while encouraging her to demonstrate good character. This school also promotes the learning of technology. Her third grade classroom contained 15 computers which were used to effectively enhance learning. The Principal truly cares for the students and wants to help each child succeed. The smaller class size is a big plus for this school as well. Each classroom is capped at 25 students. This school has many great qualities.

I cannot comment on other parents experiences, but I can give another prospective into Desert View Academy. I have 2 sons, now a 6th and 3rd grader, that have attended DVA since Kindergarten. My 2nd son was diagnosed as being ADHD in 1st grade. Instead of my child being ignored, Mr. Ogsden, Mrs. Ogsden, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Weigel and Ms. Sandy called a meeting and presented numerous techniques and ideas in order to help my son succeed. The teachers and staff know each child by name. They are aware of the students needs and education. The students successes are important to them. They are constantly striving to better their methods of teaching, improving our childrens future. They are setting in place a firm foundation of knowledge, respect, techniques of study, character building, methods of solving problems, responsibility in each of our children. Desert View Academy is a great school. I believe that Mrs. Weigel, the new principal since January 2013, will bring amazing contributions to the development and success of this school and our children.

Almost every parent has a concern about this school's office staff. School's clerk is rude over the phone, inattentive, makes numerous mistakes, and never calls back if needed. They all seem careless about children's needs-color of the socks is more important than having lunch, children are working with lights off (supposedly they see the board better this way, and who cares if they develop vision problems after that). Every time there is a need to talk to an administrator or one of the ladies in the office the parents get some negative experience and it has just been worse with an administrator change in January. They have no fair rules they follow themselves, how dare they teach our kids character?

Desert View Academy offers students a safe place to grow, an excellent education, and an opportunity for success! In an area like Yuma where A rated schools are few and far between DVA is the number one choice if you are looking for A+ education. With the best State testing scores around, and a teaching staff that dedicates itself to its students you will not be disappointed. Students GROW academically at DVA and in a changing global economy that is what we NEED for our students. As a military family we move often and I can compare DVA to several school in many states, both public and private and my children are receiving some of the best educational opportunities around. I need my kids to be taught skills to excel not only on standardized tests, but also in life and DVA is rising to that challenge. The Odyssey of the Mind program at DVA, of which my son was a part of,challenged him to become a problem solver and went beyond textbook education (and they had two teams make it to state). The focus on technology integration at this school far surpasses other schools and they have plans to take it even further in the future.There is a wait list at DVA BECAUSE of the education kids get.

The office staff are rude, incompetent and do not care about the children or the family. They seem to just want you out of their faces as quickly as possible. The new Principal Mrs. Weigal is nice but does not follow through and I question her integrity as she told me that she observed my child but actually did not. Mrs. Ogsden had an oppotunity to handle a situation truthfully but chose instead to back her questionable personnel when they were PROVEN completely wrong! She would not admit they were wrong and instead imposed a punishment on my child. I believe this school may have been an awesome choice years ago but I'm affraid that has changed in the past few years. There seem to be some decent teachers there but the leadership leaves much to be desired. Instead of trying to lead children to make better choices they issue warning tickets or move them to a seat by themselves alienating them. They say nice things about character importance but they really dont back them up with their actions. They talk down to the children and their parents as if we are not capable of understanding them and their highly evolved intellect. I don't recommend this school.

Desert View Academy is not the same school anymore, the office staff is rude and make you feel they are better than you, they do not have consistency in their rules to everyone equally. It is sad and frustrating as this has pushed me to choose a different school next year. On the other hand teachers are great!

Never send your child to Desert View Academy! I heard all about what a good school it is and was excited to send my child there. I got a very rude reality check; it is beyond terrible. The office staff will not work with you at all and seem to feel that they are better than you. There have been many incidents to include; not feeding children lunch, not making sure children drink enough water, leaving very young children at the bus stop alone at an unscheduled time and not notifying parents until afterward. I am outraged; it is disgusting that any school would place such little importance on the wellbeing of the children in their care. Even worse, is that they continue to tell parents how much they care about our children and what a safe environment they provide. I wish I had known the truth about Desert View Academy before I allowed my child to attend. This review is not a reflection of my opinion of the teachers.
