Concerns About Honesty and Educational Quality


As a parent, choosing the right school for your child is paramount. It's with a heavy heart that I write this review for Stevenson (RLS) Carmel Campus, which my child attended for multiple school years. I believe in providing honest feedback to help other parents make informed decisions.


Pros:


* The hot lunch program at the school is commendable. The variety and quality of food offered are impressive and appreciated.


*Initially, their "specials" program was robust and enriching, thanks to a team of talented teachers. However, now the majority of the lower school special teachers, who were very talented, left the school.


Cons:


* Honesty and Transparency: One of the significant issues we've faced is with the school's administration. There's a disturbing pattern of misinformation and lack of transparency. This ranges from trivial matters like outdoor activity times to critical aspects of our children's academic and social-emotional experiences. It's been disheartening to untangle these inconsistencies as a parent community.


*Educational Quality: When it comes to academics, the school unfortunately falls short compared to other independent institutions. Despite claims of offering differentiated learning, the reality doesn't match up. The one-size-fits-all approach fails to meet the diverse needs of students.


*Staff Turnover: The specials program, once a highlight of the school, has suffered due to the departure of many talented educators. This loss has noticeably impacted the quality of the program.


Conclusion:
While I appreciate the efforts made in certain areas like the lunch program, the overarching issues around honesty and educational quality are too significant to overlook. I had hoped for a more transparent, nurturing, and academically challenging environment for my child.

For parents considering Stevenson, I urge you to thoroughly research and look into other options. The well-being and education of our children are too important to compromise. We have a group of post-Stevenson families and the common theme is how thankful we are that we decided to leave, how much better our kids' new schools are, and how much happier our kids are.

Some nice improvements to the landscaping on the campus, but the campus is still mostly on a hill which can make it challenging to navigate and find decent parking in the surrounding neighborhood. There are some very good teachers there, but they are not the majority, unfortunately. And sadly, the school leans more towards taking care of the teachers than the students. One teacher was going off on students and it took them a long time to remedy the situation. The math and science departments are really lacking and aid students in falling behind. The Spanish and History teachers are top notch though. Overall, the school seems to have lost its energy and enthusiasm for learning. A bunch of parents left because their concerns were not listened to at all, and their kids were falling behind in reading and math.

School seems to attract misfits. There is too much bullying and too many kids with learning problems.

No, bullying was rampant. One boy has been suspended 12 times but his parents must be donating to school, because he always returns. Send terrible message.

Dismal. My complaints have fallen on deaf ears, so we removed our son. Far too much bullying and large proportion of kids were misfits. The 4th grade male teacher was himself a bully to my son on campus (a 6th grader involved in a game of tag) and when I confronted teacher, he was rude and dismissive. Sending youngest child to Carmel River School. Stevenson huge disappointment, creepily so.

They barely assign any in 4th, 5th, 6th.

There is a dour feeling on campus, as if many of the teachers are here temporarily and jockeying for a job somewhere else. Very odd vibe. Humorless teaching staff.

They should oust the ineffectual teachers and be more responsive to parents’ complaints. The whole essence of the school is a wacky exclusionary spin on PC culture which is basically misanthropic which is unfortunate.

We had a horrible 4th grade experience with teacher Jen Boen. This person should not be teaching. Absolutely not! Her personal bagge she tries to assuage by shaming and psycho babbling the kids. Two quotes my son brought home: “I teach to the bottom of the class to include everyone.” And, “All of you have social issues of some kind. My job is to identify and fix them.” Hands down the worst teacher we’ve ever encountered.

Our daughter has been attending Pre-K here for the last year. The teachers are caring and the environment is good here. However, they are not doing much. Last year our daughter did lot more in another school. Last year she did science projects, observed life cycles, did indoor and outdoor birdwatching, did actual gardening like planting and taking care of plants, made world map, just to mention a few. This year, nothing. Last year she was reading in class, and doing simple addition. This year she is doing phonetics, alphabet, counting to 30. I feel like she is going backwards. It's not worth so much money. We are going to move her next year.
