New School Community Day

This school is wonderful. The teachers put time and care into each student, ensuring their success. Also, their music program is one of the best in the county! The only issue I have with this school is related to the office staff. The office staff are beyond rude, unaccommodating and condescending. I have never experienced such terrible customer service in my life. It is a shame their terrible attitudes are the face of the school.

Worst school they support bullying won’t do anything for students who are getting bullied the principal does not try to solve the issue with the bullying.

Teaching at New School has made my life richer and more connected to my community. The staff is amazing, caring and dedicated to serving the needs of the students. All students here are given the opportunity for success and a positive future. New School rocks!!!

New School is a small alternative education high school. Our students have, for whatever reason, not met with success in mainstream schools. Because we are small, and because we have a talented, committed staff who cares about our students, we make a difference. Children come to us with their history of struggle, challenges, and failure, and we help them to believe in themselves. Most (not all) of our students leave our school changed: they believe that they can do what they choose to do in life, that they do have a choice, and that their difficulties and challenges are not obstacles, but strengths. We give our students confidence. This, not any academic or subject area learning, is the greatest lesson students can learn. Without this, nothing is possible; with it, anything can be done. "Never give up."

New School is a Title 1, Community Day high school in Watsonville, California. The three primary avenues that bring students to New School are massive truancy records, oftentimes due to migrant family histories, behavior records that have led to suspensions or expulsions, sometimes from multiple other programs within our district or as terms of their probation. Our school's student population vacillates between 45 and 65 as students come in to recover credits and then cycle back out to comprehensive high schools. New School's motto is 'Never, Ever, Give Up,' and even though discipline is stressed and plays a significant role in our curriculum and daily routines, the most common description of our school from students, past and present, is that it is like a family. New School students demonstrate the most positive changes in attitude through participation in the Monterey Bay Alternative Schools Athletic League, the only alternative schools athletic league in the state of California. Students learn good sportsmanship, teamwork, build self-esteem and develop a better sense of community by participating in co-ed volleyball, basketball, soccer and softball throughout the school year.
