I wouldnt send my child here if it was the last school on earth. (my page reloaded after 2000 letters so I have to start over, worth it to me to get the message out about this awfully managed school). Starting with Van Sant, the vice principal. I skipped class once at the end of the school year, probably because I wasnt learning much anyways (not because I am not engaged in learning, but because classes move so slowly), he found me with my friends on the baseball field. Took us to the office, made micro aggressions assuming that I was a bad student all the time, and probably didnt learn anything. Mind you I have a 4.2 GPA and am double majoring in history and political science in the fall, some students at this school can’t write a simple sentence. Back to the skipping class story, a few days later, a teacher tells me that another teacher told them that van sant told them I was skipping class with a boy kissing and he caught us. That is a completely untrue and fabricated story. I have pictures of me and my friends running around on the field, no boys in sight. I don’t understand why the vice principal is gossiping about students, especially if what he’s saying is untrue. Next the education, the teachers are good, I didn’t have one teacher I didn’t like or who was bad at teaching. I would say classes move very slowly and there is no workload at all, I never had any work to take home. My entire sophomore year I didn’t get one essay assignment. If you want your student to learn to write coherently, do not send them here. My educated assumption is that teachers know the students will not write more than a decent paragraph, most writing assignments were 3-5 sentences. They dont want to write 3 sentences, but they will. This leaves no room for students to improve. INORITA AGUILAR, the school secretary. Not professional at all. As the person who picks up the phone when calling the school, and the first face you see when you walk into the office you would think she’d be nice or have some type of customer service skill but you’d unfortunately be wrong. Interacting with her is dreadful, since she’s so skilled at cutting you off, and when you call, she might get into a full conversation with someone else without telling you or putting you on hold. I have no idea where they got her from but she needs to go. Not enough room to write about the powertripping hall monitors. Once had detention for being late to class and got reamed for no reason. Awful administration.

The teachers in this school work hard for the pay that they are getting and they seem to want the students to actually learn but some teachers are reaching their boiling point and taking their anger to people who do not deserve it.

The leadership in this school is lacking as the students and the faculty seem to but heads on almost anything. As an example, there are football games that the music teacher is not notified on whether they are playing the national anthem or not and both the teacher and students are left awkwardly standing there with some people laughing. Another is the disrespect some staff has when dealing with the kids since they believe that they are some kind of god since they believe that they are always right and will punish a student for little or no evidence. An example is when a student was kicked out of school for making a joke to someone that a staff member overheard and expelled the student when everyone agreed that he did nothing wrong.

Overall I am neutral when it comes to the school since, on one hand, it has hard working teachers but on the other, the people running the school are uncoordinated when it comes to almost anything. When relying on teaching and learning Marina is decent but when it comes to disciplinary actions I have heard it is better to leave then to deal with the staff breathing down your back without cause.

Overall the good teachers (and school leadership that somewhat tries) slightly make up for all the abysmal sewage that seeps out from every nook and cranny here. And it is still leagues better than most MPUSD schools. The last bit being the only reason for a third star.

Some teachers give none and some give mountains. I drown in Economics work yet have nothing for nearly all the rest.

I love most of my teachers, but two have been supremely dysfunctional. Those two were so bad they pretty much single handedly made the class of 2019 abysmal at math.

It's a high school... and one full of lazy, dysfunctional people like me. They also let someone pass out during a rally and continued throwing candy like it was a joke. While no one helped the person

Two of my sons attended Marina while my oldest attended Westminster High School. Actually thought WHS was a better school. There were a few teachers at Marina High School that were off the charts on caring and teaching to their students staying after on a routine basis, but there were also a couple that were just done and they should be out of there as just awful. The office staff and guidance office came across very entitled and snobby.

My son attends this school. He is very happy with the teachers and student body. I am disappointed with the Great School Rating. Frankly, given the caring attitude of the teachers, I am surprised the rating is not better.

My daughter has attended here for the past three years and will graduate in 2012 and she loves it...both the principal and vic pincipal are outstanding as well as their staff. The school has challenging academic programs which I love about it. My daughter takes real pride of her school , she's in leadership, NCBI, ect. Oh and she is also on the softball team which is on their second year...Go Mariners!!!
