Ive been a parent at MBCS for 3 years and I love it. Theres a sense of community and warmth that really adds to our experience. I have found many opportunities for parental involvement whether that be through giving time or resources. I am able to find ways to volunteer in the classrooms, at festivals and with field trips even a full time job.

My children have a reverence for nature and a respect for other living creatures that has only grown with their experiences at MBCS. I couldnt be more proud of the caring, responsible people they are becoming.

Weve been able to build supportive, communicative relationships with our teachers allowing us to feel safe sending our treasured young children off to school.

If you are looking for an emphasis on social and emotional development this might be the school for you. We did our research on public, charter and private schools in the area and have been very impressed with MBCS.

My second grader says, its really fun and in second grade you do a lot of math and math is the best. My TK says, I love circle time. I love playing outside and my teacher is the best. They spend lots of time outside and get to make food in TK/kinder.

We did a site visit before enrolling and found the process easy and enjoyable. Ive referred friends and coworkers to do the same. Check it out today!

I highly recommend Monterey Bay Charter school. They were warm and caring and dedicated to my children. They were very connected to all 3 of them and me individually not just academically but also socially and emotionally. The teachers, director and counselors spent a lot of time to make sure they were doing what was best for my children. Without going into too much detail they went above and beyond when my family was in crisis and were instrumental in helping me keep my kids safe from a dangerous situation outside of the school. My children thrived in this school in all ways. And we will miss them and this school tremendously as we unfortunately had to relocate out of state.

Both of my children are Monterey Bay Charter students - my son has been there 6 years and his sister 2 years. I am a frequent classroom volunteer & a member of the school's board. My wife and I are both educators and are compelled by MBCS' Waldorf-inspired curriculum with its focus on whole-child development, project-based learning, hands-on activities, field & camping trips. MBCS teachers are incredibly dedicated and skilled at creating welcoming, safe spaces and motivating their students to work hard & learn! If you're thinking about sending your precious child/ren to this school, go for it. They will be valued and treasured, they will find their place and be free to be themselves, they will emerge with a set of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Note: I am writing from my own family's experience. I will address at the end the reasons I believe there can be really varied experiences at MBCS. I had four to five children attend this school over a two year period recently, and we left due to a move.

I am really thankful for our time at MBCS. It is a really unique education style that is perfectly opposite of our modern world in all the right ways. They do a lot with pencil / paper rather than Chromebooks (though they do use), they do really fun activities that can't be done at traditional public schools (think camping and blacksmithing), and they have an incredible group of families that pulls it all off together. They learn a lot about classical and ancient history and culture - my children grew very interested in ancient Greek culture after one unit! They choose classic high-quality children's literature to study and read, including performing Shakespeare.

We have moved to a different area of the country, and my kids are really missing their friends and education there. The type of student and family it attracts make really great, fun friends that are active outdoors and in the community. There is less presence of technology in the kids' social interactions than where we live now (think less Tik-tok and phone dependence).

We find that our kids are well-prepared academically for their new school in both math and reading. They grew tremendously in their artistic and creative expression from drama and the arts integrated into the classroom. They learned how to camp, and better than camp, how to connect with their peers in really healthy and meaningful ways apart from technology.

It's not perfect - we had to have direct conversations with administrators about issues and the teacher quality can vary, but overall it was a fabulous experience that I am super grateful we had.

Regarding other reviews: We did not have any experience with the bullying noted in other reviews - I did find that the staffing was constantly in flux and often did not seem to have a strong leadership presence, which could certainly be a problem in the wrong situation. The classes can have a lot of kids and feel chaotic because the activities are hands-on, meaning there can definitely be behavior happening that is missed by a teacher as kids are up and moving around a lot. This can also be a huge positive for some children to be active in class. We personally felt supported by our teachers when we brought up issues.

Our family absolutely loves Monterey Bay Charter School! We have two children attendingone in 2nd grade and one in Transitional Kindergarten (TK)and we couldnt be happier with the experience they are having. From the moment we joined the community, we felt a genuine sense of warmth and inclusivity. The school fosters such a tight-knit, loving environment, where students truly care for one another, and this has made such a positive impact on our kids.

One of the things we appreciate most is the Waldorf-inspired curriculum. Its unlike anything weve seen beforeso much focus on the whole child, integrating creativity, artistic expression, and hands-on learning with academics. The approach ensures that my kids are excited to learn every day, and they come home talking about everything from woodworking to storytelling! The emphasis on nature, collaboration, and experiential learning makes them feel connected to both the environment and their peers.

The teachers are nothing short of amazing. They are not just educators but mentors who genuinely care about the emotional and social well-being of each child. Ive seen such a deep bond form between my children, their classmates, and their teachers. It feels like a second family. My kids are always eager to go to school, and thats a testament to the loving, supportive atmosphere that MBCS creates.

If youre looking for a school that balances academics with emotional and creative growth, and where the sense of community is palpable, Monterey Bay Charter School is it. We couldnt ask for a better place for our children to thrive.

I have been extremely pleased with this school for my kindergarten son. He is in his second year there, and I feel like it has been a great fit for him and he loves his class and teachers. It is a very caring, nurturing environment. I love that they align with Waldorf principles, I think it is so good for young children to spend time outdoors and doing the activities that they do here (song, crafting, cooking, creative play, art) instead of typical kindergarten schoolwork. He has gained a good sense of numbers, letters, math and has started reading, but in a more relaxed, natural pace. For those considering this school for their young children, please consider how this school differs from a traditional kindergarten and look up what Waldorf is about. I think it is great and would have considered a Waldorf school but some parents who dont understand this type of learning sometimes criticize the school for their children not learning on the same timeline as traditional schools. I highly recommend this school.

I was a student at this school. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. I was bullied and sexually harassed by other students and my complaints were ignored by the school staff. They do not do ANYTHING to stop bullying and maintain class rooms to be safe learning environments for kids with noise sensitivitys. I was bullied and harassed by a girl (I am also a girl) for 6 years and no one did anything. She even told me to take my own life and I almost did. I was sexually harassed by a boy with autism and the counselors defended him because he had autism. So, I had to deal with getting my chest groped for four months before I was finally able to leave that school in fifth grade. The only thing that I really liked about that school was their 100% LGBTQ+ friendly environment. But thats literally it.

FAMILIES, BEWARE! We had to pull our child out of Monterey Bay Charter School for being emotionally traumatized by incessent bullying daily. MBCS is a dangerous place for children PERIOD! The MBCS administration is extremely neglegent when it comes to adequately protecting their students and stopping bullying from happening inside/outside of their classrooms! MBCS was grossly dismissive of our child's needs/our family's pleas for support, safety with every single incident that we brought to their attention. They wholly lack the proper skills/support required to effectively deal with and stop bullying/bullies ~ despite their "posititve, proactive" advertising. Sadly, our child is still dealing with the emotional/psychological ramifications that stemmed from not being protected by MBCS and from being racially, emotionally and physically bullied every single day. Please do your due diligence and research MBCS thoroughly!

I followed my gut and intuition to transfer my child to another school, and it has been the best decision Ive made. I originally read all of the bad reviews before enrolling my child into this school, but took it with a grain of salt and wanted to give MBCS a chance. A lot of the reviews below about bullying being a problem are true. My child is now thriving at another school, and much happier.

Please believe all the other reviews that mention how much of a problem bullying is at this school. I wish I had seen them sooner and kept my child far away from this toxic school environment. Administration will not help you at all if your child is a victim of bullying and will just try to sweep everything under the rug or try to gas light you into believing your kid is just lying. The Director at this school even stated during a public meeting about bullying that she has adopted the philosophy of "if you believe half of what your child says about me, I promise you, I will believe half of what your child says goes on at home". These people have absolutely no business working with children and it shows.

Now you may read some reviews online for this school and think "Wow, this seems like an interesting an unique approach to education." But I assure you that education at this school is kept to a minimum. Teacher's who don't know what they're teaching and/or teaching misinformation combined with a nearly non-existing curriculum ensures that by the end of eighth grade you're barely as smart as a sixth grader. And it's not just education that's wrong with this school. Bullying is also acceptable there. If you tell your teacher about bullying chances are she/he'll tell you to deal with it. You tell the director, she'll say something along the lines of, "Well there's no proof, so I can't do anything". And even if you get a good teacher, chances are they'll be fired for doing... you guessed it. Nothing. Among all the bullies are some good kids. If you make friends with one of them that friendship won't last for long however considering they're probably smart enough to switch schools. That leaves only the bullies. Who knew that refusing to do anything about bullying would end so poorly?

We have three kids at Monterey Bay Charter and are so grateful they get to attend this wonderful school. We appreciate the whole-child approach and their engaging methods of teaching. The incorporation of art, nature, music, and movement make learning fun. The knitting, sewing, felting, cooking, woodworking, and amazing field trips are a bonus.

This is not a good school to send your child.
They do not prepare the students to move on to high school academically.
They also do not adhere to the state mandates regarding bullying and because they are a charter school they can make their on rules and definitions with regards to bullying.
If your child is bullied by a student at this school they will minimize it and categorize it as a misunderstanding even if physical harm is done.
If you go the the board of directors or file any complaints about the staff their will be retribution from the staff against you and this has been documented.

I am a student at this school and about to graduate. I absolutely do not feel prepared for high school. It is a horrible atmosphere and the teachers and Directors do not care about bullying here. The teachers barely teach you and expect you to just figure it out on your own. They keep hiring new staff and the substitute teacher was the least involved one I have ever met. The Executive Director is leaving and they are supposed to hire a new one, so hopefully, the next one will care. The Assistant Director needs to care and finally do something to help the students. She is temporarily the Executive Director until they find one. There are lots of better school choices to send your kids to. Please spare your children from going here. The last reviews sound like the staff wrote them to boost the school's attendance since lots of kids have left because of racism too. Take my warning from a student that knows and prevent your kids from suffering the way so many of us have. You do not feel like you belong or feel safe at MBCS. We deserve better.

Thrilled with the school. It's a great alternative to middle schools in the area. I love the emphasis on art, music, and nature. They provide the kids with lots of meaningful experiences and opportunities to grow.

The environment is good and the students seem to enjoy it. However, the academic standards are low. My son went to this school for 7th and 8th grade and is struggling with writing in high school because there was no focus on writing mechanics such as outlines and essay development. Lots of coloring in main lesson books but that doesnt provide any actual value toward true academic achievement. The school is great for a social environment but academic rigor is lacking. My son needed structure and this school did not offer that. I truly believe this school made my son think that under achievement is acceptable. My daughter attended this school for 4th thru 6th grades and I think she got out just in time to go to a real school to prepare for high school before any serious damage could be done. The school used to be better rated which is what attracted us to it; however, I should have trusted my instincts on Waldorf education and enrolled my kids in the lower rated middle school.

The School newsletter posted on Oct. 22nd and explained that Monterey Bay Charter School is experiencing a significant deficit due to under-enrollment in the school. There will be many cuts regarding the School budget in order to save if enrollment does not go up. The School may need to use about $320K in reserve to cover the remaining deficit because of reduced funding regarding enrollment. This is not a surprise to me as the Executive Director (and staff) has not cared about bullying since arriving at the School and the situation is much worse now. So many parents have brought to the School's attention the bullying issue between students and the Monterey Bay Charter School staff. We are met with anger and retaliation, or just ignored altogether. Very inappropriate and I agree with the honest reviewers below. As parents, we need to protect our children and listen to them even when the Monterey Bay Charter School does not and I agree, why doesn't the Superintendent and anyone tasked to help do something from the Monterey County Office of Education? Time to reevaluate the staff at MBCS. There is a reason why teachers come and go. Also, when a Teacher is a bully too, MBCS has the habit of having the Teacher move with the student. A failure when in an emotionally unhealthy situation. Powers at be, please help.

A Waldorf inspired curriculum supported by handwork, gardening, woodworking, blacksmithing, art, and music. Caring staff and faculty, both my children have thrived there. My eldest is about to graduate highschool and was more than prepared leaving MBCS. Children learn life skills like sewing, cooking, growing, and making. Academics in kindergarten are learned through play. My eldest had learning challenges and was well supported. Middle school activities include dances, student council, Model UN, and sports. The curriculum is rounded out with amazing field trips, camping, and community festivals. Teacher collaborate and mentor each other while receiving formal Waldorf grades training every summer.

Sweet school with caring teachers. I have one child that graduated and another still enrolled. My oldest was more than prepared for highschool and has excelled. My current child is thriving. The waldorf inspired curriculum is supported through art, music, handwork, woodworking, and blacksmithing. There is student council, dances, sports, and model UN for middle schoolers. Children in kindergarten learn academics through play.

I agree with the previous reviewers as this School does not care about bullying and discrimination upon families. The lack of care at this School by the Executive Director and staff has traumatized our child and many other families. Many families have chosen not to return and we also agree. The curriculum is also very lacking and there is a revolving door of educators that can also be verified. The Office of Education for this School should investigate and create the proper, safe educational environment every student and family deserves.

For the Waldorf approach to work you absolutely need top notch teachers. This is because the teacher stays with your child from grades 1-8 and teaches ALL subjects.

The problem with MBCS is that they are really budget constrained - so you can imagine the teaching staff - its a mixed bag. There are some great teachers, but many are just so-so.

If your child is stuck with a mediocre teacher, you will feel trapped and boxed in. Its really hard to change teachers. Your child is basically stuck with that teacher until high school.

Our experience with this School has been a nightmare. Absolutely racist and discriminatory. Certain parents are bullied as much as the students. The Director and Assistant Director turn a blind eye to School Policy and fairness as well as School staff. Absolutely appalling and please do not send your child or children here as empathy is just a façade. Can not wait to enroll in another School with integrity. If you speak respectfully with truth in mind, the retaliation and unprofessional behavior is allowed through the rank of command like the Board of Directors as well. Truly unacceptable and hoping their Superintendent conducts a proper investigation. An unsafe School in every way. Our Children's School experience is supposed to be a positive one to look back on. Not if they go to Monterey Bay Charter School. Emotional scars are valid as well as a proper education. They just started implementing report cards and that has been an unfair situation as well. Unless staff is changed, I do not see hope for this School.

This is a horrible school. They don't follow their own rules. Bullying is acceptable here. Violence is acceptable here. My sons teacher even moved his seat when his class mate slapped him across the face not her seat. Rules are only for certain kids and certain parents.

The inexperience of teachers is especially problematic when it comes to spotting social problems or bullying. My kids were bullied for years and I found out from other children. The teacher was completely clueless. I noticed few if any teachers supervise during recess, where such behaviors would be more apparent.

Homework is not given until 3rd grade. For the most part homework is age-appropriate. I disagree with the concept of giving homework for which kids need parents help (says so right in the assignment - ask an adult to...). If an adult is required, the homework is not for the child.

The community is close-knit, diverse and accepting. Special enrichment classes are icing on the cake - Spanish, handwork, woodshop, and games classes were a lot of fun and a different approach to enrichment courses. Art, music and core academics are done well.... It's not for everyone, but many children thrive here where they might not in a traditional setting.

There is a policy not to give any homework until 3rd grade, but I think some homework just for the sake of communicating with parents what is happening in the class and parents being able to reinforce those ideas at home would be beneficial.

The teachers are lovely and passionate, however they do not receive enough support from the administration. Because of this, they can be stretched which can impact day to day lessons. With even a little more support, this diamond in the rough has potential to shine.

The curriculum is beautiful and the teachers work to create a happy classroom environment and examine human nature through fables and tales. Take time to read the grade level year summaries on their webpage.
It's a lovely approach - and they try to be patient, kind and treat students with respect - which serves the students well.

Administration is... absent, defensive, stretched thin, ineffective. Often instead of anticipating a problem and proactively communicating or thinking about how to soften a blow, it seems like a head-buried-in-the-sand is the approach until everything becomes chaotic - and if there is any negative fall out the admin has lashed out and placed blame on the chaotic situation(s) which were very preventable. The director and board leadership have demonstrated multiple incidents of lashing out and talking down to parents and other members of the community. It is time for a change in leadership.

I don't have personal experience in this area but have heard of some students with medical issues or learning differences who may not be getting enough support... This was a big issue in the past and from what I understand the school was working to correct this.

The nature of the school creates a close environment which I believe limits the bullying in that the students all know one-another well, but does not prevent all bullying situations.

This school is a great school. It is different than public schools, but not all children benefit from the public school approach. The teachers here really care about the children and the classrooms start to feel like a little family since the classes stay together each year.

I think the school is very focused on character, which is nice. This didn't mean that my child was surrounded by great kids - we still had a bullying problem, that the teacher was very responsive towards - but in general the children were kind. They also get about 4 hours of play time every day, so that probably helps with getting their energy out!

The Director was a no-show during our entire time there. I even reached out, with no response. Then, the school realized it needed money from parents, and I started getting bombarded with robo-calls and emails from the Director. I've never been at a school where the head of the school was so uninterested in connecting with the community.

The parent community at this school is so defensive, and so determined to convince everyone that this is the best school imaginable. This is a terrible option for (1) military families, (2) children who are high achievers, and (3) parents who want their children to be motivated. This is a verrrry relaxed academic environment. Children are encouraged to go through kindergarten twice, and then each grade is doing work one grade-level below, so what you end up with is children who are working 2 grade levels below other children their age. The actual school day consists of many nature walks and recesses, to the point that I honestly couldn't figure out whether my child learned anything during her time there. Even in a 4th grade classroom, many children needed assistance with reading (!) and standardized tests were given with accommodations for that - I suspect their high test scores may have something to do with special requests. The claim is that children will catch up to grade level by the time they leave in 8th grade (and supposedly surpass their peers at that point), but I wasn't willing to watch my child go to a glorified summer camp for that long in the hopes that it would all be well at the end.

No recent reviews why? My kid was bullied all year. Talking to teacher about how to resolve didn't help. Teacher ignored our plea to take charge of the bully. Because kids stay with the same teacher and students all through 8th grade, that's a problem. The same bully will be in the same class year after year. Very bad!

This is a top notch school. The teachers are enthusiastic and well trained. I like the fact that the teachers go from 1st to 8th with the students or at least halfway in some cases (works well as some teachers prefer the younger students while others prefer teaching the older students. There is great parental involvement and there is a feeling of being a part of a large family here. I feel as my child is well connected and well taken care of as well as being encouraged to think beyond the box. Problematic though, is the amount of teachers let go in the last decade, there has been one average of one per year. For a small school, this is significant. There needs to be more support for the teachers in this school. It's a headache to have to try to explain why so and so teacher was let go, to a student bonded and thriving in that particular class. We are almost done, but I wonder if there is another teacher on the chopping block this year.

This is my second year as a parent in this school. I have two children attending. My son LOVES the place and is very happy with everything. My daughter is graduating this year. The staff, the administration, and the support staff are truly excellent and will go above and beyond to make sure your child is doing well. They are in the process of opening a high school and I am sure it will be a success story as well. I highly recommend the school.

This is my first year working at this school, as well as my first introduction to a Waldorf education. The whole atmosphere of this school is calm. I am very impressed with the affection the teachers have for each other and for their students. They are some of the kindest and most patient individuals it has ever been my good fortune to work with. The students begin with a teacher in first grade and both teacher and students move to the next grade level, all the way up to 8th grade. I believe this increases not only the bonding between teacher and student, but also is at least partially, if not wholly, responsible for the overall attitude of calmness in each classroom, as well as the respect the students have for their teachers. There is also an emphasis on the children's developmental stages, with many varied activities that help to develop both gross and fine motor skills. This is not a school that believes in sitting a child down at a desk for 6 1/2 hours five days a week. There are ample opportunities for them to exercise and move, with this movement being incorporated into the lessons themselves. I wish every school was a Waldorf school!

I went to Monterey Bay Charter School from Kindergarten through 5th grade, then I moved to a different state for 6th and 7th. At first I was so happy to get away from MBCS because I was sick of it for some reason, but then in the summer of 6th grade I realized how amazing this school is. The classes are SO close, but welcome new students in as family. The teachers are amazing, and you learn by using art such as drawing, painting, knitting, clay working, strings class, poetry, and so much more! I love Monterey Bay Charter School so much that I just can't stay away, I'm going back for 8th grade. I would HIGHLY recommend this school if you want your child to learn, be happy, and make lifelong friends like I did. :)

MBCS is an amazingly creative school thanks to the multi-talented teachers and staff. I feel lucky to have found them as an alternative to mainstream education. Waldorf is definitely the way to go if you want your kids to think outside of the box!
