There is a small ratio of teachers to students so students do not fall through the cracks. One of my kids has special needs and they worked really hard to make sure her needs were met. My other child has a short attention span, is very social, and still needed to be challenged. She was given work that helped prepare her for college and she graduated a semester early! My other graduated a semester late. That is another great thing about this school, students can go at their own pace. If they are behind they can catch up, if they need more time, they have it, and if they want to get it done faster, they can!

SAVA is a great school. The staff and teachers are warm and accommodating. My student's teacher takes his success seriously and works hard to assure he stays on track and completes his work. My experience with every person here as well as leadership has been outstanding. Any and all of my concerns with my student's education have always been addressed with his best interest in mind. I know that I made the right decision enrolling my student at this school.

The majority of teachers do not understand or reflect the communities they serve. They are mostly white middle class women with little experience with black and brown people outside of work. They unconsciously play out their implicit bias and set low standards for students. They are also out of touch with the unique experiences students face as impoverished neglected kids of color. They material they are learning is not culturally inclusive, relevant and often not meaningful to the students. Many teachers take this job because it is easy rather than out of a sincere need to serve and empower these vulnerable communities. The school is lead by an complacent white male who came from wealth and is also out of touch with the concerns and needs of these students. He recently let go the only Latino and African American teacher on staff creating even less opportunities for students to see reflections of themselves in their teachers. Staff members have been discouraged from addressing real issues such as ethnicity, racism and cultural pride. Only after the school was threatened to lose accreditation did it take these issues seriously. There is a sizable population of teachers here who have problematic and racist attitudes about their students. Teachers receive little To no support from admin in addressing these issues. In short, go here as a last resort. Staff severely lacks diversity and advocates for youth of color with few exceptions.

Th school tries but it’s inauthentic. How can you try to instill values ina community you don’t realky respect?

Leadership is too busy trying to make a horse and pony show of our students to gain more funding from his political alliances. His heart isn’t in it. He pretends to uphold his Christian values but he is more commuted to his white male privilege. I am not sure what makes him qualified to run the school other than he is the right complexion and the right sex. He has a reputation of promotion and hiring his white make friends and yelling at and degrading his white female staff. Staff of color that works here better either tap dance or keep your head down. He doesn’t like vocal women or uppity negroes. Do not challenge his inherent authority as a white man. It will not be tolerated.

Overall I was strongly disappointed with my experience here. The communities the school serves are some of the most vulnerable young people in Sacramento and I really don’t feel that the staff recognizes how much power they have to help this community. But you can’t serve people you fear. Teachers s here will say they are anti racist but they are not. There are absolutely teachers here who would cross the street if they saw some of our students walking down the street. The unchallenged racist biases these white middle class teachers have internalized about black and brown youth goes unchallenged in this school. Staff follow the lead of the leadership and the principal has no idea how to effectively serve these communities. It’s the blind leading the blind and the students are the casualties. And if you speak up and advocate for the students be prepare to be left go with no explanation- but st least you’ll be able to sleep at night! Parents stay on top of this schools should them accountable. You have a lot of power. Use your voice

An amazing school that cares deeply about the success of all students. They have really great hands on CTE classes and some count for college units. You won't find teachers and administrators that care more for the students. My child goes to the Elk Grove campus.

Love them very helpful to my son and he had a wonderful teacher who went above and beyond the for the better of his education. Wish more teacher's were like Mr. Sprinkle :) Great for students needing that one on one help.

SAVA offers an alternative setting and allows students who struggle in the traditional school setting a place to move at their own pace and set their own goals.
