THIS SCHOOL SUCKS. THE TEACHERS DO NOTHING. LITERALLY NOTHING. ALL THEY DO IS SIT AT THEIR COMPUTERS AND/OR GO ON YOUR PHONES. THEY DON'T EVEN PAY ATTENTION TO THE STUDENTS. OH AND THE SAFETY THERE SUCKS. THE SCHOOL CAMPUS IS DISGUSTING THERE'S LITERALLY A WALL COVERED WITH GUM THERE. DO NOT GO HERE!

I hate this school so much. Thank God it's my last year.
My experience at this school has been pretty bad. Teaches are disrespectful and rude. bullying and violence are prominent, and the staff does nothing about it. Some teaches also treat some students better than others (calling on them more, helping them more, being nicer to them, explaining things to them, etc.) I would generally not recommend this school.

Folsom Middle School is an excellent school that provides a well-rounded education with modern facilities and engaging extracurricular activities. The teachers are dedicated, experienced, and foster a culture of intellectual curiosity. Students have access to the latest technology and resources, and are encouraged to participate in a range of clubs and sports programs. Overall, Folsom Middle School is an ideal choice for any student looking for a top-notch middle school experience. I would recommend this school over the disgrace that is known as Sutter.

If I could have a do over I would absolutely skip this school. Elementary and High school were great but for some reason this is the worst school. Admin doesnt care, school encourages bullying and at the end of the year they contribute to mental health issues in the area. Needs major improvement.

The worst I have experienced to date. Poor communication. Zero desire to actually assist. Whatever it is they are focused on, it is not families and kids having a safe and productive time in a middle school.

students are not taught how to study effectively. It is extremely frustrating that there are no standards for homework across classes or any consistency in how/when it should be completed. Very little is assigned. Very little critical thinking taught.

Aside from a few talented and dedicated teachers, most teaching staff we encountered over the years are a lousy excuse for a title of 'teacher'. Really seems like a bitter bunch that take their frustrations out at work. My biggest complaint however is that they do NOT view parents and allies and do their best to cut out parents from any learning equation. No critical thinking or analytic skills are taught either as they focus on getting kids to do well on a test and nothing beyond that.

Strong character?! Maybe thick skin, but definitely not strong character. Teachers are sarcastic and bitter. Office staff are patronizing and dismissive. I miss the deep level of respect and partnership that was shown to kids at our elementary school (thank you Oak Chan for forever raising the bar)

It seems like it has to be a big public issue for leadership to lead. The communication is cryptic - so if your student isnt involved in the issue, youll receive a mass communication without specifics. The leadership doesnt partner with your average students ability to learn and grow.

I think the district needs to lead by example. My son was physically attacked in elementary school. The district did nothing. Now hes in middle school and its part of the culture.

Equal Parts good and bad. I wish there was more involvement on ensuring kids are taught to understanding and partnership with parents. Too much energy is spent on significant incidents and not enough proactive student development. The vice principals are useless.

From the top down, children are taught that rudeness and inequity are okay. Principal won't meet with you to discuss items to address. He sends you back to the people who are the problem. Witnessed students asking simple questions at the front desk (politely) regarding conflicting memos and information on a field trip and being told answers such as "I don't know....and I don't know who would know." Experienced several unacceptable encounters myself from administration.

One of my children clearly had to do no work in a class because it was too easy. When I reached out to the teacher to suggest moving the student to the next-level class and requesting his/her recommendation, I never received a response.

Teachers help somewhat, but it's 110%the parent's job to instill these characters in their children. The administration doesn't demonstrate respect, integrity or compassion.

Rude administration that doesn't lead by example in the core fundamentals you would want your child to learn (e.g. how to communicate effectively, be courteous, respectful, understanding...etc.).

Principal does not seem interested in improving the environment in the front office (administration) or for his students.

There are some excellent teachers (as in most schools); however, it seems that many ignore negative communication within the classroom, among students and within administration.

Most of the students are in clicks and the way they treat other students is a reflection of the way their parents are are teaching them at home. Very influenced by one another, not in a good way.

This school is all about parents that are well off in the area. A lot of the students that attend this school act like theyre better than everyone else. The school faculty allows this. Its been going on for years.

This school is a joke when it comes to dealing with this issue! I had to take my daughter out of this school before she finished sixth grade! I home schooled her for the rest of her middle school years. They have no clue how to deal with bullying.

I didnt experience any of this when my child went to this school. My child was bullied from day 1 of 6th grade to the point of her being upset every day, not eating, anxiety, etc.

The school has a culture of segregating the kids with special needs. The Special Needs classes are in portables behind the school and next to the large, rusted storage bins and abandoned desks. The Special Needs kids who are very behind academically have no avenues to participate with the general ed kids. The parents are told they can't even take electives because the school is at full capacity. The people who organize social activities -- and even the Jag Walk -- do not even think about accommodating the kids with special needs. Furthermore, some special needs kids clean up after the gen ed kids in the cafeteria and wash and fold their P.E. clothes as part of a "vocational program." It's very disappointing in this day and age.

Great academics/teachers and fun extracurriculars make Folsom Middle School a wonderful experience!

GREAT CLASSES & TEACHERS
My child is a 6th grader, who is really thriving at FMS. Some of her favorite classes are advanced math, English, and Project Lead the Way. FMS is focusing on STEM (now STEAM as they incorporate art), which gives my child an additional educational benefit. The teachers are really on top of it and give parents up to date grades daily on PowerSchool Parent. Anytime I've had a question, I just e-mail and they are prompt to answer. I'm told by my child Principal Bliss is often on campus saying hello and encouraging students.

EXTRACURRICULARS
There are SO MANY free after school clubs for students and some are even offered before school begins. There is definitely something for everybody. The Engineering Club is a huge hit and so are the school dances! The PTO (who helps pay for many of these clubs/events) only has 1 fundraiser at the beginning of the year, so parents aren't bombarded with multiple fundraisers.

FEEDER SCHOOL to VDL
Another benefit... Unlike Sutter, FMS is the feeder school to Vista Del Lago High School, which is quite known for its high academics and college like feel. This means that in a few years, when my child moves on to high school, not only will she will be well prepared, but she will not have to switch schools or leave her friends.

DROP OFF
The only downside is the drop-off/pick-up situation. It's packed! Be prepared and leave early (or use Flowers). Otherwise, my best advise is for your student to take the bus.

My child attends FMS and has since 6th grade. The academic experience in 6th and 7th grade was positive under the direction of Principal Chris Aland. However, Mr. Aland has moved on and FMS has a new principal - John Bliss. Mr. Aland was a very involved principal and sincerely demonstrated his love and devotion towards the children who attended FMS. Thus far, I am not impressed with Principal John Bliss. My child is now in 8th grade and thus far has been exposed to the most terrible academic experience to date. There is NOT ONE teacher who has proven capable of completing their "job". One of the teachers changes documentation and directions on how to complete her projects "daily". Not only that, she demands her students follow her directions to the letter. As a parent, I'm active in my child's education - and I can't even keep up with her amount of written material, not to mention to lack of consistency when it comes to directing and educating her students. I'm glad this is the last year my child will "have" to attend this school.

I am going to be an 8th grader in FMS. The school is overall above average, most of the teacher are kind and eager to teach, but I heard that this year some teachers are going to leave, so I was a bit worried because since next year there will be a huge pack of six-graders coming in. the kids are ok.

I am a parent of two children. Our children both struggle with mild learning disabilities. The teachers ALL band together like cops if you begin to complain about them and they will mistreat and passive aggressively take it out on the kids. They preach parent involvement, but when you get involved and ask questions like just trying to get details about homework assignments - they will put in on the kids saying that the kids should already know this. The poor principal has to be the one to enforce everything and the teachers do not support him either. The only thing these teachers do is respond to formal complaints. This year they were charging for text books in a Special Education English class and then we found out that they were not allowed to do this per California and Federal laws. Money was refunded. There is no oversite and accountability and it shows in the teachers' attitudes and actions.

I have two children who have attended FMS. I find the administration to be unwelcoming and rude which is unfortunate since many times this is the first impression. When you walk into the office there is no one at the counter to greet you and the people that are in the office don't even look up. I have been happy with many of the teachers however when my student began having academic struggles during 8th grade we did not receive support from teachers or counselors. We were told students were expected to struggle and unless they had an F there was no need to worry. As long as your child is an independent worker and does not need anything above and beyond what is provided during classtime they will be fine at Folsom Middle.

This school is quite lively, most of the teachers are very kind, and can teach your child well. To balance out the work, and fun, Folsom Middle School often has many rallies, or musical performances to keep your child motivated. There are some rude kids, however there is guard duties to check for bullies, etc.The source of food is varied, however, some meals, after being eaten over and over again, can be very unhealthy. The vice principal, and principal often go around the school at lunch, and passing periods to check for any misbehavior. Overall, this school is above average.. 4 stars.
