As a parent to a sophomore this has been a TERRIBLE experience. My son was a good kid until he went to Bella vista. Vaping, both nicotine and THC seems to be normalized around there. When I called as a concerned parent I was told that if caught with drugs on campus, it’s a Thursday school or 1 day suspension at best.

And then soccer team at Bv. Specifically the JV coach 2025/2026. Omg. Awful awful awful.

I am pulling my son this week from this Petri dish of garbage!

This is the worst school I've ever gone to! I would never recommend this school to any reasonable person. The teachers were a mixed bag, with some good teachers and some just awful teachers. I was a freshman when I went to this school last year (2023-2024), and the school was just a disaster that whole year. The principal was horrible at administrating and behavior, and let way too many fights slide, just because he was too focused on vaping. I have heard that he was fired after that school year, and if he was then great! The students (especially on the football team, not all but most of them) are rude and they bully random people who don't ever even choose to talk with them. They can steal your items and then lie about it so that they don't get in trouble. They also bullied the ASL (sign language) teacher out of the school last year, they would always mock deaf culture and would always disrespect him. The students would always talk way too much and it was impossible to learn anything! Also, the students would always whine about the homecoming float being removed from the school, and it was a lot to take. I didn't like anyone in any of the classes last year. That being said I had some friends but they weren't in those classes. One thing most people do not know about this school is that it's also an overwhelmingly conservative school (the second most conservative high school in the district), so it's a good school for your child if you lean that way politically. However, I wish that I had known about that because I didn't beforehand and if I did I wouldn't have gone. I am very happy that I know go to a much better school! I wrote this review to warn others about this school.

BV used to have a great reputation. Unfortunately, these past two years for my now sophomore student have been extremely disappointing. There are some very good teachers, but he’s also had two honors-level teachers who are disorganized and unhelpful. The social environment is terrible. Bullying, fighting, and vaping are rampant and nothing is done about it. Nobody wants to use the restrooms because they’re walking into a cloud of smoke and vapes and likely to be harrassed. I will probably be pulling my student from this school.

In the last year, there have been more fight than ever before. Teachers and staff won’t get involved so your kids will rely on their friends. Are your kids into athletics? The AD will let them down! The soccer teams made playoffs this year. Due to the AD’s incompetence, neither the girls nor boys could play at home. Teams were given as little as 24 hours notice to accommodate games 1-3 hours away. Families and friends couldn’t attend due to the last minute changes. The head coach of the soccer program got the position by calling on th teacher’s union and pushing out good, qualified coaches. Worst yet…our basketball team qualified for playoffs but couldn’t attend because our AD (and principal?) dropped the ball. Seniors in high school were robbed of playing their last games! Let that sink in!!! Btw, these are also the ‘teachers’ educating your students. Best of luck…

I am a parent of a student at BV. There are many opportunities for students to join activities and find a group of friends. The school needs to be fenced in and have more campus monitors. It’s also the only high school in the district that doesn’t have a theater/performing arts center despite its award winning music program.

I am happy with Bella Vista High School. This school is still a traditional not block learning system. There is a lot of students and we were on a wait list to get into this highly ranked high school. Well worth the wait! There band department is excellent and award winning dedication is outstanding! My son took the 4 year engineering program. Excellent!! The teachers, staff, security team are all dedicated to our kids.

This is an amazing school with a proven track record of academic excellence. The teaching staff is top-notch, and most of the students are proud to call this their school.

Academics at this school are okay, however the overall school experience is lacking. Clubs and sports are not supported (other than band) and the school administration doesn't seem to recognize the importance of how the combination of academics and extra-curricular activities truly contributes to the overall success of students. While extra-curricular activities are offered, there is no accountability to ensure they are well run programs. What happened to, "If you're not going to do it right, then don't do it at all"? Bella Vista does not adhere to this school of thought. Parent input is certainly not welcome and in my experience just passed along to another staff member who doesn't have any influence over the outcome. If I had to do it over, I certainly would not have put my children in Bella Vista High School.

My daughter graduated in 2011, and had a wonderful experience all four years! I always was informed and happy with what was happening with my daughters education. The Bella Vista community is amazing!!

I have sent 4 kids to Bella Vista and they have all been well prepared for life and college.

I have sent 3 children to this school, and they have been well prepared for college courses. For the most part the teachers are awesome and care about the kids.

As someone has said below that a student did get into a fight but, all of the girls got suspended and one got expelled for her 2nd time fighting. The school is great and safety is one of their top concerns. The students where forced to take down the videos. They have security camera all over the school and one had caught the kids cause they fought in front of a camera. If a Teacher ever does anything wrong or incorrect the teacher will most likely get in trouble. I've had a horrible teacher and I had told my counselor and she had a sight down conversation with the Teacher and the Principle. Some things could change for the better but ask yourself why does BVHS have the highest Star Testing score in SJUSD. Its because we learn what we are required to learn.

The staff at this school seems to be more concerned with dress code violations than the safety of their students, they stalk the halls looking for violations. I have been made aware of 3 different fights that happened in the hallways of the school just in the past 2 weeks, they were recorded by students cell phones and then posted to various websites with all that goes with cyber bullying. Where is the staff when a child is getting beat up by another student?

Administration runs the school more like a prison. Parent involvement is unwelcome and a parents who want to intercede in their kids, educational or disciplinary course of action is labeled a trouble maker. Kids are also made to feel like children because "mommy" and "daddy" want to be involved in their progress.
