I have a 9 year old son. I pulled him from public school for many reasons, but the one reason that stood out was the fact that he was beginning to show behavioral problems. Coming from a bad divorce and a newly blended marriage, it was difficult for him to adjust. He was very negative with low self-esteem and very angry. I enrolled him in Hueneme Christian School. Since I had a niece and nephew graduate from this school, I heard many good things. Once school started my fears came to pass and there was some difficulty. Ms. Murphy was his teacher last year. She called me and I felt hopeless, but she saw all the good things in him that I saw and this gave me hope. I came up with some ideas and Ms. Murphy and the Principal Mrs. Hernandez all got on board to help guide my son. In just a few months my son improved and was given student of the week for his efforts, which boosted his self-esteem (all Ms. Murphy's idea). At the end of the year he was a changed little boy. Loving, happy, and not easily angered anymore. This school is AMAZING!!! With the love shown there how could he NOT change. Their academic are amazing. Ms. Murphy is patient with all her students and when they get a little out of hand she has a way of getting them to behave in a positive loving way. I back this school all the way! The price is very affordable; I do not have a large income, but I make it work. It's worth it. The staff is amazing. Some how they get to know all the kid's names. They staff are fun and professional. I also want to state that they work very hard to make this school function. HCS....you rock!

I've never heard of any incidents of bullying at HCS among the students, faculty, or administration.

I can't thank HCS for actually behaving like Christians and taking this very important aspect of learning into consideration. Not all children have the same learning styles, and HCS absolutely makes sure that all students are learning and advancing.

The administration as HCS is the most hardworking I've ever met. They are constantly finding ways to involve the parents and make the school a success.

My child was an only child for five years, since starting school, he's learned to play well, share more, and he certainly is a compassionate and respectful kid, as he was taught at home, but even in these areas he's grown.

In seven months my child has shown vast improvement, not only in academics, but also in behavior and leadership.

I have a child at HCS and the school has helped him grown and mature beyond what I though was possible. I love the curriculum. When he started school, he wanted nothing to do with letters, only numbers. Now he's learned his entire alphabet, he knows all this letters and sounds, he's counting past 100 and he's memorized many Bible verses. He loves the administrators, the child care ladies, his teacher, and his little classmates. I could not have asked for a better school. Thank God I did not send him to New Harvest. The faculty and staff truly care about the students. As I invest in my child's education, I make sure I am receiving the service that I'm paying for. As long as he is safe, happy, learning, and advancing, I couldn't care less how the school manages the payments I make for my child to get an education. I'm paying for a good education and he's getting one.

My child attended K4 for 1/2 the year, I bought my son a new $40 HCS fleece jacket at the start, he wore it for 3 weeks before it was lost, when I checked the lost and found the aides told me to 'take any jacket, it's fine'... so now I know what happened to his jacket, we never again saw his brand new jacket for the rest the year. Many times he would come home wearing a sweatshirt I'd never seen before. While this may not be a big deal, that is super unsanitary and HELLO HEAD LICE!
While his teacher was amazing, they decided not to renew her contract for the 16-17 but didn't tell any parents until much after the decision had been made. We had another child preparing to enter K4 and even through the enrollment process never mentioned that she wouldn't be there. That's bad business.
The curriculum is old, my child was forced to start learning cursive in K4 when he had barely mastered simple printing, teacher even said she disagreed with the idea of teaching them this young.
The aides for the after school program never really pay attention to what's going on around or interact with the kids.
The property could use some serious updates, the kids are forced to play on asphalt primarily, which for little ones = a lot of scraped knees.
The favoritism and politics is real even in the younger grades, only children associated with the church were asked to perform pledge of allegiance, bible readings, etc
Overall, was not impressed,we will not be returning next year and I wish I would've heeded the warnings in previous reviews but the office assured me things had changed.

HCS spiritual & academic standards have declined tremendously!I would not recommend.Parent concerns are very much over looked "swept under the rug".Admin is unprofessional & uneducated in Christian education or any education @that.everything is handled very poorly & unorganized. No responsibility taken, nor is there changes made to better situations.You can literally go in with questions and request to talk to someone and no one knows anything or ever has an answer, the principal is clearly not doing her job in educating teachers and keeping them on point with new/updated curriculums & teaching methods.Admin has failed to hire quality/credentialed staff/teachers so u get what u pay for- minimum wage employees who are burned out teaching the kids).classroom sizes averaging 20+ (25-28)until recently due to famiies leaving.There is not 200+ students theres weeelll below that now.FYI parents are paying a lot for quality classrooms, teachers, staff, school.Wheres the money going?Years of multiple fundraisers with lil to show.Uniforms/first aid kits/books are very costly, obviously the school is also benefiting from those. Most staff NOT AT ALL Christian, though they say, if your around them long enough you will see.gossip is awful! Confidentiality- there is none!Mind blowing-the Pastor doesnt preach to the kids during chapel nor is there any form of discipleship.Your bible study if you get a teacher who cares may have something good to teach but chances are your child will just have a verse to memorize.The curriculum sad to hear is old & behind (especially math and science).Some teachers only educated in the philipines not the U.S. And have very hard accents that can affect childrens phonics/spelling grades.But some teachers are sweet- if thats what your looking for.Others have very bad attitudes.The subs are daycare staff (not teachers).Sanitation needs to be improved and physical changes need to be done the building shows lil $ put into it.there is roaches!be aware.Playground is not ideal. Favortism is a definite.they do not have the standardized state test that other schools go by, its another company that is not relevant to any other schools around, including private schools.They claim to be two years ahead-untrue!You will find that 2/3 of the class on honor roll which is really weird and they have a higher grading scale. Wheres the conviction?

I have 2 kids going to this school for a few years now. Overall we are very happy here. I agree with some of the comments.

Yes there is favoritism, but this is unavoidable. If you have more than 1 kid, whether consciously or unconsciously there are times you would favor 1 kid over the other.

The school been around for 46 years, so their teaching method in my opinion is very outdated. Most of the teacher in this school does not have teaching credentials. But the teachers in my opinion are very caring, attentive and loves their kids. Though I really wish and hope they can work on this and upgrade their teaching approach. They do a lot of memorizing and not enough practicals or creative thinking.

I also do not agree on repetitive daily homework, this is very boring and unproductive. The kids already spent 8am-3pm daily at school, they should be able to have time to enjoy and learn things outside of school.

Some private school mandates parents participation/volunteer, I'm surprise they don't here considering how cheap it is to attend. To my knowledge this is the cheapest private school in Ventura county, especially if you have multiple kids!

Our overall experience has been good, I did made a complain to the office once and it was taken care of immediately.

I know some the teachers here in Hueneme Christian school were honest and doesn't held a grudge. There are also some teachers here in Hueneme Christian school who are dishonest, gimmicky, and are open to certain parents only of which what makes you think "why?"

Thought this school would be one of the best private school in the district. They've been up and running for over 46 years but this time around things has changed drastically. Unfairness and favoritism are the source of the problem of this school and it should stop. The staff are very helpful sometimes but the others are totally opposite as if they have inferiority conflict issues that they only choose to great and interact with very selective of group of people. They don't make you feel like a valued customer when you see or walked by them in the open space. this is something you do not want to have to encounter in the daily basis especially when you are with your child. They see it. They feel it. It's not healthy. The school personells are obviously not doing their job when things like this happens.

2-4 homework done every other day but the same type of homework in different format. The child will not learn much this way.

The teachers and staff are great. Leadership needs to change. I would highly recommend not wasting your money until leadership changes. I would like Mr Hanks to take over & maybe Mrs Martinez or Hernandez regain schools quality reputation. There's no accountability for fundraisers or explanation of where tuition goes. NO money I spent updating classrooms for teachers and there are serious health violations in that school & teachers need to be paid more n respected more. Unfortunately favoritism occurs and free tution occurs to family members because they have family in high position. Pastor handles all the money & promotes himself to high position which he has no experience & is hardly there. Ask about finances . That should tell you why leadership needs to be accounted for legally. Enough is enough

I have 2 children here. I really appreciate the academic structure and the caring teachers that my boys have. My oldest was struggling academically, his teachers did all they could to help him transition from public school to private school curriculum. With there help, constant participation, parental interaction we were able to catch him up. My little fella adapted a lot easier since this was his first official scholastic experience outside of daycare. I would highly recommend this school if it is in your budget.

I'm a parent and I have considered this school as my child's second home because I had a very high expectations of this school in terms of academics, building values, and instill self-confidence to little ones. The point is, more and more of their staff members (mostly in grounds), have no bearings on maintaining common courtesy I.e "Good morning" "How are you Mr/Mrs?" "Thank you" "You have a good day". This reviews it only reflects to the staff members on the ground. So here's my friendly 2 stars rating instead of 1(one). Changes of these ratings is determined based on actions taken for improvement.

My child is in her 2nd year with HCS. Started since K5, at first the school ratio was what you expect from a faith based private school. In my child's K5 class, there were two teachers and in each class were about 15-16 students (not bad!). However, come 1st grade, not only did the class size start bigger (25), but the class kept getting new students throughout the school year. Concerned parents discussed this issue of a "public school" type class size ratio but parents plea of splitting up the class were just ignored by the office staff. The current class size is 30 students. The public school across 1st grade class size is comparable. My child is great academically but that's due to the hard work that we put in at home. Parents need to volunteer to be a coach, in my child's case, busy parents weren't able to volunteer as coaches, therefore, 1st grade class does not have a sports team this year. The teacher appears caring but I'm sure overwhelmed. The custodian are wonderful. The office staff-as long as they're getting their $350+ tuition every month, they're happy. But listening to parents concerns and problems, good luck!

My child is going to this school for 3 years now. At first I agree with the teacher's being bias and it sometimes hurts. My son is at 1st grade now and only got 1 student of the week when he was at K-5. I have chosen to give 5 star because of overall quality of the school. I like Mrs. Hernandez being tough to staff to straighten things up on school, I wish just she will become principal there someday. Military friendly school they offer discounts for active duty personnel.

Teacher 'bias' gives better marks to favorite pupil (family friend) that lead a student to become "Student of the Year". It's very sad to know that there is one existed into this private school.

My daughter is in kindergarten and writes fluently in cursive and reads fluently as well. They are starting book reports and fractions. God also comes first in all their curriculums. If you are not willing to put in the time and extensive work with your child this is not for you and you will not succeed here. If you are you will be amazed at what your child can accomplish.

Moved my child here mid year in 7th grade from another christian school in the area. It's been like night and day. She is very happy here. Good teachers, good structure, well behaved students. I am thrilled we found Hueneme christian school. I highly recommend it.

If education and moral values are at the top of your educational requirements list for your child and you have the money to invest in his or her well being..Send them here. If you want your voice to be heard by staff and administration concerning your child, if ever the time should come. Send them here. My sun can read at a second grade level and he's only 5!
