Family School has been an incredible experience for our family this year. The teachers are truly exceptional. They are optimistic, deeply supportive, and so attuned to each child’s unique needs and strengths, not to mention creative and adaptable. The partnership I have with my child's current teachers is so positive and fantastic. I love the Seesaw picture updates! We have always felt that our child is genuinely known, understood, and guided by educators who are not only talented but also joyful and encouraging in the way they approach learning and development.

One of the things that sets Family School apart is its wide-ranging specialty programs and holistic approach to education. They have performing arts- theater and music-, visual arts, PE, Spanish, a Chumash Samala language and culture teacher, and the Purple Door kiddos have a cooking class this year- they really put emphasis on learning skills in a variety of areas. They also have a big focus on outdoor exploration and social-emotional learning. Every aspect of the program feels intentional and meaningful. Yesterday’s spring show was such a beautiful example of this. I was amazed watching every single child get up on stage with confidence and joy, singing songs, delivering lines, choreographed dances, and supporting one another so naturally (the kids who weren't performing were genuinely engaged in the show, minimizing behavior issues. It was clear how much care and encouragement go into helping children feel safe, capable, and proud of themselves, while providing a world-class education in how to be a human in this day and age.

I also deeply appreciate how grounded the school is in nature and mindfulness. The hikes, outdoor playtime, and connection to the natural world are woven seamlessly into daily life, giving children space to explore, regulate, and grow. At the same time, there is a strong emphasis on interpersonal skills and social-emotional learning. The school actively nurtures empathy, communication, gratitude, and self-awareness in a way that feels authentic and lasting. I love the drive down Fig Mountain and the conversations that come up with my child about their day.

Perhaps most special of all is the community itself. There is a culture of gratitude, mindfulness, and connection that extends far beyond the classroom-(re: Einstein Day!). Parents know each other, support one another, and feel like true partners in the experience. Family School lives up to its name in every sense.

Family School did not live up to what was promised when initially touring. The good teachers leave and the teachers who stay have have no schooling in teaching. The office did not communicate well when there were issues. They would tell different families different things which would cause unnecessary drama. My student had two teachers. One was amazing and said they were great in class. The other was constantly messaging us about how bad they were. That teacher was visibly always annoyed with my child and 75% of the rest of the class. My child said they thought the teacher hated kids. As the pattern goes the great teacher left because they are paid much less than public school teachers. The bad teachers, who can't get hired elsewhere, seem to be the few that stay. We are more of the thought that elementary school should be a social emotional building time and we do not put a strong focus on rigorous academics at this young age, but my child fell behind compared to kids at other schools and didn't get the social/emotional experience we were promised. The campus is beautiful, but the education, teachers/admin and experience were way below public school options in the area and definitely not worth the added cost.

There were some serious shakeups within this school in the last few years. 5 months in & 2 teachers have already left. As you can see by the various reviews people have either loved this school or actually been honest in recognizing the unfortunate direction it's going through poor leadership under the direction of an unqualified head of school. If you have any doubts just look at the numbers..7 different teachers in 9 years in just the kindergarten-first grade program alone. That's not including the various other grades who've seen their share of mass turn overs including the preschool program & office staff members. & even one lawsuit. Truly do your due diligence before considering having your child attend here. Key questions to ask would be what enrichment programs are offered, what the cost is vs the quality education your child's receiving & how what they receive will actually prepare them for middle school. Most importantly what qualifications the teachers actually have (degrees, credentials etc).

My child is in Green door (he is 4 and a half) and he absolutely loves it. I feel like the school matches my values and is helping my kiddo to learn and grow into their best selves. He has so many friends there and they do so many hands on activities. The teachers are great and very knowledgeable. My kiddo can be kind of sensitive and they are helping him find his voice. It really feels like a family there.

We have had a wonderful experience at The Family School. Three of our children have attended, all with very different personalities and learning styles. All have had wonderful experiences, and enjoyed their learning journey at the school immensely. The two who have graduated were very well-prepared, and are thriving both academically and socially in their middle school. More importantly (to us), all of them have developed a confident sense of self, are good community members and care about the feelings and well-being of those around them.

While we'd like to take some credit as parents, it is such a relief to know that there is such a great school in our community that reinforces these qualities as part of their philosophy, and gives our children a strong educational background on top of that. The SYV Family School is a special place in a beautiful setting that has a mission that we believe in. It is clear in talking with teachers, staff, and other parents that the school works hard to uphold these values of community, learning, and the recognition that every child is different.

Both of our children attend The Family School and it is one of the reasons our family has been so thrilled with our move to The Santa Ynez Valley five years ago. Every child is valued, the parent body is very active and involved and the teachers and administrators are tireless in their dedication. We feel lucky to be there!

Small class sizes, excellent teachers, whole child education, environmental and outdoor education and parent participation make this one of the best schools you'll ever find for children pre-school through 5th grade.
