We had a horrible experience at this school with the assistant principle. The vice-principal accused our child of hitting a schoolmate and alleged there was a video of the incident. After requesting to view the video and meeting with the vice-principal we were left confused and flabbergasted.

The video had absolutely no evidence of a punch or any physical interaction. We decided to document the accusation by taking detailed notes. This is went things went completely crazy and the vice principal began to lose his temper and began yelling and resisting any clarification.

The principal at the time was apologetic and understanding but kept saying "there is not much I can do."

We ended up moving our son to a completely different school.

After talking to other parents about the incident they shared very similar experiences.

The whole ordeal was traumatizing

I wish I could fully recommend this school because my older son truly loves it here, and thats honestly what makes this so difficult. Academically, weve had great experiences. But socially and administratively, if youre not one of the wealthy, overly involved perfect families, the treatment can feel very different.

As a single mom, Ive felt more judged than supported during difficult moments. Recently, my preschooler was publicly turned away from class over a tuition payment that was ONE day late, despite previous late payments never resulting in him being excluded before, and despite me already asking staff in writing to please handle financial matters privately after being embarrassed publicly once already.

The hardest part wasnt even me being embarrassed it was my son crying and asking why his teacher was mad at him and why he wasnt allowed to stay at school. He loves his school. He trusts his teachers. So when people say just switch schools, its not that simple when your child feels emotionally attached and safe there or at least did before this.

I completely understand schools needing policies and tuition management. I just think theres a huge difference between enforcing policies and humiliating families, especially young children, in the process.

At this school, I have experienced difficulties about my race, and some teachers have acted like this was never a problem, or acted as if they never heard about it. This school is good in the other categories, but not that much for safety.

The school is great, but sometimes nothing is done when racial remarks are made. Even if the student is caught, they will have little to none repercussions.

We've had a wonderful experience at Flagstaff. My child is in elementary school and has been attending for four years now, and we couldnt be happier. The teachers and staff are dedicated and truly get to know each student, not just academically, but as individuals. The school community is incredibly active, with lots of events throughout the year that make it easy for families to get involved and feel connected. The PTO is strong and engaged, which adds so much to the school environment.

I also value how seriously Flagstaff takes subjects beyond the core curriculum and starts exposing students to different classes early. My kiddo really enjoys tech lab and music which he has taken since he began there in kindergarten. Its great to see students exposed to such a well-rounded education with the option of joining after school clubs and activities. Another major plus: the K8 model. It creates a sense of continuity and community thats hard to find elsewhere. And as a public charter, its tuition-free, which makes this kind of education accessible.

We feel lucky to be part of the Flagstaff community and highly recommend it to other families looking for a supportive, well-rounded, and academically solid school environment.

We've had our two kids at Flagstaff since preschool and I love that they can be there through 8th grade. The amount of parental engagement and personal interactions with the teachers and staff have been phenomenal. I have found all of the administrators to be approachable and available- and they know the kids! The extra curricular activities just keep getting better as they get in the higher grades, plus there is an before/after/non-school day care and a summer camp! One of my kids struggles with anxiety and his teachers have gone above and beyond to help him feel comfortable at school and ease the transition from home to school. My other kid has struggled to learn to read and her experience with reading intervention has been amazing and she has come a long way! I can't say enough positive things about the school. We have a while, but I will be sad when they graduate!

My children have attended this school since kindergarten. They love it and I love it. The culture is warm, exciting, and inclusive. Academics are rigorous. There is a great library and an award-winning librarian. There is an outdoor greenhouse. The students learn to type, use computers, and prepare presentations. The teachers are engaged and caring. There is a strong emotional-social learning curriculum. There are so many opportunities outside of the classroom from sports to robotics to choir to Green Team. There is a very active PTO and lots of community activities.

My daughter recently graduated from school and as they call in Flagstaff Academy 'once a dragon, always a dragon', I wholeheartedly support that statement. As a 11 years dragon, I have seen my daughter grow immensely through all this time on multiple areas of her personality and Flagstaff Academy had a major part in that development. Great school campus well guarded by School Safety Supervisor. Friendly staff gives you feel of family like environment. Amazing STEM and Arts focused school. Diverse families from neighbourhood counties attending school. Definitely recommend this great school. Though my daughter is finishing her journey here, she is taking Flagstaff Academy dragon pride for her next journey!

As a proud graduate of Flagstaff Academy, I look back on my time there with immense gratitude and appreciation. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, I was surrounded by a nurturing and academically rigorous environment that laid the foundation for my future success. The teachers were not only knowledgeable but also deeply invested in my growth, both academically and personally.

Flagstaffs focus on science and technology helped spark my early interest in the health sciences, which I have continued to pursue at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. The schools commitment to hands-on learning, critical thinking, and character development gave me a strong start and the confidence to aim high.

While the school is science and technology focused, they're really about developing well rounded kids rather than singularly focused on STEM. It's a smaller school with a great community for the kids and families. We've been attending the school since 2019 and are impressed with the teachers and the breadth of academic programs for the kids. The school has a strong Gifted and Talented program, regularly wins academic and academic competition awards. The teachers are fantastic and are focused on developing your child from where they are now. There are multiple learning opportunities - the greenhouse, outdoor classroom nature area, tech lab, arts, music, etc. available to all students - elementary and middle. We've found class sizes to be smaller than other local schools. The staff really care about the children and the kids get to develop in a place where everyone knows them by name and is there to help them grow. Our kids are in elementary school now - but we'll most certainly keep them here for middle school as well. Not only is the middle school strong academically, but the size is much preferable for us rather than the large local middle school options. The school community is really impressive - the amount of events that are held and overall atmosphere are fantastic. We don't have experience with other schools - but consistently hear comments from people who've transferred from other local schools about how inviting and friendly the school community is compared to where they were.

For families seeking a dynamic, supportive, well rounded and safe educational environment for their kids from pre-K to 8th grade, Flagstaff Charter Academy is an exceptional choice. My family moved to Longmont from Chicago two years ago and have been extremely happy with the education that Flagstaff has provided my third grade daughter and first grade son. The school emphasized a STEM education which is complemented by robust arts, music, and character development programs. The teachers exhibit a high degree of empathy towards students and take the time to put them in positions to succeed. Family engagement is a cornerstone of the Flagstaff experience. The active PTO organizes frequent events, supports teachers, and fosters a strong sense of community. Finally, the continuity between elementary and middle school was a huge bonus for our children. Going to one school for nearly a decade provides the consistency my children need to maximize their potential, and Flagstaff middle school is quite strong, as it has been honored as a Colorado Trailblazer School to Watch. They are the only charter school in the state with this designation.

Flagstaff has been a great experience so far. I have children in 5th and 7th grades and they have had a pretty smooth go of it so far. I enjoy the staff and teachers, they seem engaged and creative. Leadership changes can be hard, but it seems like they're managing. As long as social emotional awareness, along with restorative justice practices are able to continue, I think our kids are in good hands.

We were skeptical about the school from bullying related reviews years back. So we went to another school. At the other school we had a very unexpected bullying situation with less than stellar admin response. We then went to Flagstaff and we could not be happier with the environment and culture of respect at Flagstaff. If a situation arose at Flagstaff, we have more confidence in their ability to support everyone involved. I hope this helps other families considering this school but were made nervous by old reviews on this subject, like we were. For us, I'm glad we went for it.

Repeatedly, from current teachers, extended family, and members of our community, I hear how well my kids are doing in school. I credit that to Flagstaff. They are academically, socially, and emotionally prepared for the next steps. Flagstaff CharterAcademy has the healthiest school culture I have seen. I would send my children to this school again.

Flagstaff has been a wonderful fit for our family. All the staff we have encountered are welcoming and dedicated to the students. I really appreciate that there is a safety supervisor on staff who dedicates his time to the safety of my kiddos and their peers. I also love the sense of community among parents, staff, and students. They talk about the whole child and I think that really shows. I toured a handful of schools and this was the clear choice for our family!

My daughter has been at Flagstaff since Pre K. We enrolled her here due to Flagstaff being a charter school, thinking it would provide a better, more individualized learning experience. Prior to beginning her Pre K year the teachers repeatedly assured us that she "didn't need to know anything, they would absolutely have her caught up by the end of the year." Halfway through the school year her teacher "resigned" and was replaced with the coordinator of the preschool department. This woman was not friendly and not who you would imagine thriving as a preschool teacher. My daughter stated many times that the woman was mean and not fun as a teacher. At the end of Pre K this woman advised us that my daughter was not even close to being ready for Kindergarten. She is now in 4th grade and has been told she is "not ready" for the upcoming grade at the end of every year so far. We are beginning to wonder how this is possible and if Flagstaff is ever going to have her performing at grade level. The only reason we have not pulled her from this school is because she loves being a Dragon and we believe that stability and consistency are important. However, if this year does not improve we are going to look elsewhere.

Aside from this, I can honestly say I've never had a positive experience with the office staff or administrators. They are consistently unhelpful and unaccommodating, while remaining rude. It does not make you feel comfortable or welcome as a parent. There is definitely a feel here that if you are a regular, working parent and you cannot be involved in the PTO 24/7 then they don't care to treat you well. Flagstaff does not have any regard for parents who actually work and cannot constantly volunteer or attend events during regular work hours. I do not appreciate being made to feel guilty for having to work and not being able to put in 30 hours a year of volunteer time.

Lastly, the dismissal process is a nightmare. I have other children who have attended other schools who complete their entire dismissal process in about 1/3 of the time that it takes this school. This again just makes it difficult for parents who have jobs and do not have family, friends, and neighbors to help. The whole process is confusing and takes far too long under the guise of "student safety."

All in all this school is obsessed with its rankings and test scores, all the while allowing children to fall behind. The atmosphere is unfriendly and difficult for parents in many ways.

Send your kids here if you want them to learn. The school day is longer than at other schools in St. Vrain, the teachers have been excellent, and my kids' friends (mostly) are kids you enjoy being around. I'm impressed by how much better the schooling is than when I was kid. Flagstaff also has an after school program called Dragon Flight that is great for working parents. Runs until 6pm and is available in the morning from 7am to 8am if you need that. Available during the various late start and teacher inservice days. It's right there on site. As a working parent there is never enough time - this program really helps us. My only complaint about Flagstaff is that the lunch time for the kids is pretty short.

One of the worst schools in Longmont. Their only chatter is all about getting a poster on the top that they are a great school with great rating in exams or so scored by kids whose parents spend day and night working with them, and the school takes the credit.

My child has been ruthlessly bullied by students and teachers alike. When I have taken this to the principle, we were brushed off and dismissed, rather than her doing the mandatory reporting as she should have done. The learning environment here is toxic. Staff micro manage students to the point of removing all individuality and punishing those who do not fit into their box. They target those who stand up for themselves. Staff behavior is shockingly horrible. This is an ongoing problem with this school. High teacher turn over rate shows a very unhappy working environment, which effects the children.

I started my child in first grade and thought this was the best choice for him. Fast forward to the present he is now in 5th grade and I couldnt be more disappointed with the staff at this school. The principal herself has told another student in front of my child to choose better friends, naming my child saying he is one of those kids to not be friends with.
Another staff member threatened my son during lunch causing my son to not eat for 3 weeks AND NOT A SINGLE PERSON NOTIFIED ME! NOR WAS ANY ACTION TAKEN AGAINST STAFF MEMBER.
Ive heard from other strident/parents that my son was wrongfully pulled out of class with no warning and for no reason. Never once did I ever receive a phone call for any kind of reason from the school. Not even telling me if he was misbehaving. When addressed they deny all allegations against them and put my 11yr old child in the wrong.
This school and stuff is a joke. The lack of communication, accountability, protection against bullying is weak I am baffled. Needless to say my child will not be returning to this school!

We have been in Flagstaff for three years now and are very impressed with the school. I really appreciate the focus on a STEM curriculum, but still having strong arts and music programs. I love the additional opportunities that my daughter has (greenhouse, technology, science lab, etc.). We have been really happy with all of the teachers and found them caring and responsive. The school encourages family engagement and as the COVID restrictions have lightened, there have been more opportunities for connecting with other families.

We are at our first year at Flagstaff and so far we love it!
The staff genuinely cares about the kids and they all seem to love their job.
Teachers are well taken care of from the PTO with the help of families.
Events are planned very frequently and are a nice opportunity to meet other families and get to know the school even more.
Classrooms and corridors are well lit and have adequate natural light.
Recess happens outdoor where kids can play on the playground or run in a nice field.
Overall it is a welcoming and warm place where kids and families can grow!

We just transferred to this school from our neighborhood school and what a difference. This school has low class sizes (20) vs our old school which had 30 kids per class. My kids have homework and weekly tests which the other never had at our old school. They offer extracurricular activities like elementary band, Spanish, green team, student council and so much more. This school has an amazing community in which families get involved. We are thrilled with the education and community at Flagstaff, my kids are thriving at this school!

Our overall experience has been excellent! We have been so happy and pleased with teachers and staff.
Safety is a top priority at the school which takes so much worry away as a parent.

My children love Flagstaff Charter Academy. When we moved to Longmont, it looked like it was the best the school in Longmont and boy were we right! We have three kids enrolled with one in the preschool. The teachers are all phenomenal. The are kind, caring and inventive perfect for kids that need some TLC to make it through the day.

One of my favorite aspects is the after school activities for 5th graders on up. There is Green Team to help empower kids to make good choices in making the Earth a better place to live. Or Renaissance Quest a LARP D&D type activity with foam swords and creative make-believe quests for the kids to go on; teaching them that they too have the power to level up, even in real life and social situations.

We have been attending Flagstaff for 7 years so far. We have 4 kids enrolled in the school -- Elementary and Middle. I appreciate all of the hard-working teachers and staff who work tirelessly to give our kids a great education. We have yet to be disappointed with a teacher. They all seem to love our kids and want the best for them. Each teacher has communicated well with us anything that may need addressing at home. The teachers also communicate well with what's going on in the classroom. We love the technology available at the school, from the fun things the kids are learning in the Elem Tech Lab through the more technical courses in Middle School. The electives that the Elem students experience are amazing and so are the elective choices the Middle School students get to choose. There are options that no other schools have! Our kids come home excited to tell us about the latest subject/theme they have learned about. Any day we don't have school, our kids are quick to tell us they miss school, their teachers and their friends. There is a great community around Flagstaff, also. The school plans events to help navigate new experiences like going to Middle School, High School, and even tips for saving for college. The PTO seems to always have something going on to try to fit all of the parent's schedules. The PTO seems to be able to provide all sorts of amazing things for the school, teachers & students. We travel quite a distance to school every morning for drop-off and every afternoon for pick-up. We wouldn't do that for a school we didn't like.

We've been really happy with our experience at Flagstaff. My kids have loved all their teachers, and the teachers have been so helpful and supportive of my kids. I feel like they've gone out of their way to help my kids when any difficulties have popped up. The atmosphere in the school is very warm and inviting, and the kids and staff all seem happy. There's a lot of fun opportunities for the kids to get involved in the school, such as green team, student council, band, a reading club, and then when they hit middle school there's a ton of cool clubs and sports to join. The school does a lot to build community in the school, including park playdates, family events like the fall festival and winter lights, and then parent events. I've talked to many families whose kids went on to high school and their children were well prepared and doing well with the transition. The after school programs are incredible and my kids love them.

I went to this school from preschool to eighth grade. To say I have many years of experience of the disgusting social hierarchy in this school is an understatement. Many students, like myself, were always at the top of the class, helpful, etc but were never noticed and put down by teachers and administrators. They pick two to four students that they love and then for the next 8 years, only reward them. It can be easily stated that the child of one of the administrators was one of those students even though they were failing most of their classes.

The amount of homework given, especially in middle school, is atrocious. I remember having to stay until four am almost every night attempting to complete all the assignments, even if I started right when I got home. There was never any time for learning social skills. The social structure had the popular students (mostly children of the upper social class) who always seemed to be rewarded even if they received poor grades on the top with everyone else struggling at the bottom.

This school is the reason that I have to attend therapy due to the actual trauma it has caused me. From bullying to severe anxiety, social anxiety, and depression, I struggle today in my public high school.

Though this school did academically prepare me, it was at the cost of my mental health, ability to socialize properly, and ability to trust my own achievements.

My kids attended Flagstaff for five years. During that time they had many curriculum changes and first - year teachers. One of my kids is now a senior in high school and when given the opportunity to write an essay for college applications, wrote about moving from Flagstaff into a local public school. I never knew how much it had affected my child until I read the essay. It spoke of feeling completely unprepared and being behind other kids who had attended public school, especially in math and reading. The choice I made for my kids to attend this school will haunt me forever. I wish everyday that we had just stayed in our local school. Think really hard before entering this school, its just not worth it.

There's no character education anymore. The Dean of Culture has been asked to deal with behavior only (the principals have no time to deal with behavior anymore), therefore there's no time for him to do character development. We have watched the school for 3 years slowly remove this from the curriculum. Very sad! Not to mention the school can't keep a school counselor - one of the last ones lasted 2 weeks before quitting. The number one issue with this school is behavior. In elementary, expect that your student will be in a number of lock-downs, lock-ins, be diverted a different area, and/or schedule changes in order to deal with kids with major behavioral issues.

It depends. Our child was diagnosed with a learning disability but because he was doing "too well" the school made no accommodations for him. I know a number of parents that do tutoring and therapy outside of the school because the school isn't very supportive of issues in speech, dyslexia, math, etc.

This school went from being one of the top schools in the area to the very bottom (for Elementary). I know a number of parents pulling their kids out next year. With the lack of leadership, the ever changing curriculums between grade level (in math, grammar, spelling, etc), the staff turnover (between this year and last year - turnover is around 40%), no character education, and the behavior issues...the school is ready to implode!

Amazing...my daughter is in Kindergarten and she was in preschool there, too. She is in a class w a total of 10 kids. This school values teachers and kids and teaches character and compassion while teaching them core academic skills. We couldnt be happier!

The worst experience with an educational institution we've ever had. Things completely derailed and went to crazy town. Deeply troubling. A completely hostile environment. Our family was targeted and discriminated against. Be aware, Flagstaff had to hire a social media specialist to post positive reviews to counteract all the negative reviews. So when you read these reviews, just know, some "fantastic" reviews are really an employee trying to boost the school's image.

Many amazing venues for character development at every age. Middle school really focuses on giving kids the tools to navigate life in many levels with the compass program. The guidance counselors are incredibly invested and committed to helping kids learn skills for challenging situations.

We've been a part of this school for 7 years. If you are looking for a fantastic education for your child, this school is for you. Note: this is a school that expects family involvement- volunteering, and being connected from the parents. The leadership team as well as the teachers have many venues for communication. This isn't a school for the more challenging child, in my opinion, however. The school seems too tolerant with children who are not thriving- and need a different situation.

This a solid school. It is Core Curriculum. If that is what you are interested in, I think you will like the school. My first grader is learning amazing things but the amount of homework is astounding. He has weekly timed math tests, spelling tests, and usually a social studies test. This is along side the state mandated testing. Ugh. They do have a great focus on science. However, we are uncomfortable with the focus on memorization. Our son is very bright but the focus on memorization and timed tests seems to dim his love of learning. We will likely move him next year to a local IB elementary because of their project based learning and focus on creating a global citizen. We came from an IB background and really like the way its creates a love of learning. I am very surprised that another parent said there wasn't homework. We have at least 30 minutes-45 minutes nightly for a first grader. This is a bit much. We want our kidsto have a good education but not at the expense of his spirit.

While we found most of the teachers at Flagstaff to be exceptional, the current administration is not focused on what is best for kids and is completely dismissive of any parent input. They do not address bullying or other serious concerns, including any differential services for students with learning or social needs. When you advocate for your child, nothing happens and in fact, some staff engaged in things that are highly questionable and that could be detrimental to a child's well being. This never would have happened with Dr. Warren in charge. It is sad to see an establishment so drastically diminished. If you have a child with no unique needs - either above or below the norm and you are willing to say nothing and have no input then this is your school. however, if you are someone who wants your child to be treated with respect and consideration by ALL of the educators - look elsewhere. Beware of assuming that a charter school is better.

To misquote Star Wars, "This is not the school you're looking for".Years we have spent here and the promised education we have been supporting has not materialized. All my volunteer hours, money, physical donations and time has been spent trying to make this a better place and the board has laughed in my face. Appointing a principal and head school (what's Mr. Graingers title again?) with no education degrees, and in one case, no experience. The school refuses to admit that the lower test scores might not be because of curriculum but because of a constant stream of sweet but inexperienced teachers. When I received the email this week that a group of teachers AND parents reviewed a new reading curriculum, That was the final straw. What do parents have to say about a school curriculum?!?! We should defer to the professionals but unfortunately there is no education leader here and the one they FINALLY hired will be too late for my kids. Adios Flagstaff. The $500 in activity fees I used to pay to get my kids caught up for public school (and thanks for excluding my kids to the field trip also, it made their decision to leave much easier).
Also notice the school has not received the "John Irwin Award" since 2012 (and award given to schools that demonstrate excellent academic achievement).
You will hear the term "very vocal" (update: and "obviously disturbed") when referring to parents who criticize the problems with the school. I heard it over and over and it is mainly used by members of the administration to down play the issues. Ask yourself this, why don't other schools have other similarly "vocal" parents? Where are those reviews on those school sites? They are non - existent. Don't take my word for it, read the reviews of other local schools.
Update: My kids are thriving in their new schools. They are challenged in math (finally!!) and EVERYONE goes on the school field trips, no exclusions. Oh, and I didn't have to pay a large fee to start the school year...two thumbs up for local, public schools!
Update 2: My oldest child just emailed me to let me know that although started middle school significantly behind in Math, just tested (after 8 months in public school) and is now TWO grades ahead of where he needs to be in Math. Thank you St. Vrain public schools for giving my child the Math curriculum and experienced teachers that was needed

There are a close group of administrators, board members, and parents that promote each other and cover up unethical behaviors. They have driven every last respectable teacher and two principals away. Those remaining, including the new principal, don't know anything about educating children.

I am so happy that we switched schools to Flagstaff Academy! My child comes home absolutely happy and excited every day. Charter schools in St.Vrain differ from public schools mainly in parent involvement, curriculum, and character education. Coming from someone who has first hand experience working in a competing charter school in the same district and has a background in education, I was weary at first because I had seen how too much parent involvement can become ugly. I do however love the Core Knowledge curriculum and decided to pay a visit to Flagstaff last school year. I was very impressed with what I had seen with my own eyes. My daughter never really had specific issues at her previous school but didn't seem excited. I took her also on a tour of Flagstaff and let her make the choice. She completed her school year at her previous school and ultimately chose to leave. She is learning so much at Flagstaff and is thriving. Her teacher has had great communication with myself as well as all classroom parents, keeping us very informed with weekly update emails. I recommend Flagstaff every chance I get and I always suggest a first-hand tour. It's not a smart choice to rely solely on hear-say!

We have two kids here, and they are both thriving. The new common core curriculum is great, and we have had amazing, caring, nurturing teachers. No bad experiences so far - and all the other parents I socialize with feel similarly. Sometime those with bad experiences are the most vocal on sites like this, while those who are content don't even think to write a review. I just felt compelled to write because I was frankly shocked to see so many negative reviews! In our 4 years as a Flagstaff parent, I couldn't ask for a better school for my kids. And I can guarantee that most (not all!) of the current parents feel the same! Absolutely do your research - it isn't the perfect school for every kiddo. But if you pass over Flagstaff because of the vocal dissenters on here, you might be missing out. Come see the school for yourself and talk to current parents. There are some great things happening here!

This school flat out lies to parents in attempts to recruit more students and cover up their glaring mistakes. The school and some of its teachers and leaders are actually scary. My son was set up and suspended over a petty incident because we have spoken out against the school. As soon as we mentioned getting an attorney involved everyone became very helpful and told us how wonderful our son was. Awful school with a history of being run by awful people.

This person hired and fired a lot of people and stirred up a lot of controversy. One of his worst hires the Dean of Students is somehow still there and I don't think he would hold on to well under close scruitny

Poor teachers are all scared because if they do anything to anger the powerful parents or the awful administrators they will be out the door. Plus they make quite a bit less than the teachers in the surrounding non charter schools so they are probably less qualified to start.

I moved my child to a public middle school for this upcoming school year. After a couple of years of struggling with things just not going right, we woke up and realized it wasn't us, it was the school. After talking to a lot of other parents in public schools in SVVSD, and talking to administrators in other schools my husband and I feel comfortable making this move. The public schools are much more advanced in curriculum than this school. I feel I've been duped and sold a bag of tricks. It's unfortunate. I was excited when my son started this school in kindergarten. Now I'm just one of the parents leaving quietly. I won't recommend the school, but I wouldn't call myself disgruntled, just disappointed.

I will be completing outing myself to the administration, but parents need to know my experience before moving to this school.
I moved my older son in 2nd grade to this school because he comes from a brilliant line of men and I thought he would be better served in a charter. I was so so wrong.
Move forward 5 years and my son was making straight A's and bored in math at Flagstaff. I tried to work with the administration and teachers, but any plans put ahead where ignored about a month later.
Due to other problems within the school (detailed by others below) we moved both of our kids to public school for the 2015-2016 year. Testing has revealed that my brilliant, bored son is a FULL GRADE BEHIND average 8th graders in public school. We are devastated.
My younger son is also behind in math and writing. We have spent the summer paying for a writing tutor and an online math program to get him caught up to PUBLIC school 5th grade.
Going to Flagstaff Academy was a HUGE mistake for our family.
I am just glad we caught the problems before high school.
FYI, I am blessed that my kids have no learning disabilities or other problems. Just good kids who love school, reading and their friends. But yet, somehow, they are very, very behind their public school piers.

We started the kindergarten program with hopes and plans that our child would get a great education. Now after just 1 year we realize that our child will and would be better off at the local public school as they have surpassed FSA in testing scores and reviews. Now we have to put our child in a summer reading program to catch up to the public school kids as FSA could not help our child learn and placed it all on us. We were told that we should hold our child back to repeat the kinder program but they could go to first grade if we chose to do so. They gave us some time to make the choice and after meetings with the teachers and principle they made us feel like our kid was not ready and we decided to hold them back. So they came up with a plan to tell them before the graduation ceremony and they did not. They proceeded to let our child take part in the graduation and the principle gave a speech and at the end our child was left with a feeling that she was going on to first grade. We had to be the bad guys and tell our child that is not the case and it has left them devastated.. Flagstaff has taken a terrible turn for the worse!! An Inexperienced ex-cop runs the school and it will be interesting to see where tests scores are in a few years. But more importantly the entire vibe of the school has become negative. To the last comment perhaps the admin should do something to quiet the negativity. From experience this extreme negativity is NOT what you find at all schools. And you are correct - time has been spent this year trying to quiet the problems and not spent teaching kids! Teacher morale is at a low and I will not be surprised if some of the best teachers the school has leave. It is not fun to work in an environment where neg articles are being written. Something is broken and needs to be fixed! Sometimes the grass is greener - you just have to be smart enough to walk over and take a look!!!

Our daughter is thriving at the school. One of the things we love about Flagstaff is how hard the staff works to make sure your child is getting what they need. In our case, our daughter participates in a 504 plan which provides accommodations for her mild disability. The 504 team is responsive, open to feedback, and truly wants to work to make things right for our child. Another thing we love is the way the staff works to place kids into the right ability groups (e.g. math) and the right classrooms each year.

We left another Longmont elementary school for Flagstaff because of their rating and reviews from other parents. However, after 2 years, we are less than impressed and looking at a differnt school for 5th grade. The $240 annual fee is supposed to go for field trips, which my child's classes have never taken, extra activities, which my child never experienced, and classroom supplies, which we purchased out of pocket at the beginning of the year. This year, we're not paying the fee per a discussion with an employee of the St. Vrain school district office who states since the school is public, they can't impliment the fee, especially if you disagree with where they say it goes. Looking forward to a new year at a new school.

Flagstaff is not the school it advertises. There is dissatisfaction within parents. Families are leaving. Curriculum is slipping. Morale is slipping. Administration is getting bonuses. They prefer to bring the kids academics down so they can improve the growth numbers and wow everyone with high scores. If you dare speak up, you are blackballed and called a trouble maker and they ask you to be quiet. I have heard leadership talking badly about parents and airing information that should be confidential. What a shame. A once great school now has an article in a newspaper regarding corruption, people driving around with degrading messages about the school on their vehicle and bad morale. Not for me, not for my kids.

We visited 7 different schools in the area, including our assigned school, Niwot Elementary and 4 private schools. I am under the sense that many parents have recently become unhappy with the school because their input no longer carries the weight that it once did. Colorado is finally implementing the Common Core Standards that most other parts of the county have been using for years. Because there is a new curriculum, state and federally mandated, input from teachers, administration and parents will not have the weight that it once did. If children do all of the assigned homework there is plenty that is age appropriate. Parents can always add homework as they feel their own child needs. Our only complaint is regarding the classroom size, 27 is too big for many teacher to adequately control.

Flagstaff has definitely changed their academic focus since their old principal has left. We chose this school because of its academic excellence and it has become very apparent that with the lack of homework and interest from the administration to keep the academics strong this school is unfortunately headed in a different direction. I am disappointed that they will hire teachers that do not have the appropriate training or degrees. I also am worried that the focus of this school directly reflects what kind of education the administration would like for their children. Our family has been with Flagstaff for 6 years and it is so sad to see this change when it was historically such a great place! The administration is unable to deal with difficult situations and either doesn't respond to them at all or waits until they become a huge problem. It worries me that there seems to be a hidden agenda on their part as well.

Over the past year the school has gone through many changes that have not been for the best. the administration has been unable to effectively handle and minimize problems which has lead to at least 6 families leaving mid year within a few weeks. In addition to poor communication and lack of honesty from the school the academics have fallen below what one would expect from Flagstaff. Unable to replace teachers with experienced teachers. Many other schools in the area are getting much better results and have many additional resources available- no longer a top choice in the area.

Flagstaff Academy does a few subjects well, such as the core knowledge, science lab, and Spanish. The math and spelling tests are too easy. There is no difference between levels of the ability groups. Also, there is practically no homework, which is fine if your child is not planning to go into AP or IB in high school. I would recommend this school for those children that either hate school or struggle with certain skills because there is nurturing for them. It's probably not a great fit for everyone though.

We fell in love with Flagstaff from the moment we first visited. There's such a positive energy about this school which is apparent from the moment you enter. The students are smiling, the teachers are engaged, and the administration is happy to make time to chat. The teaching staff, in particular, is amazing. Last year our daughter was in second grade and it was a rare week when we didn't get at least 2 or 3 updates on how things were going in the classroom, and our child's teacher was always responsive to any questions or concerns. The teachers care deeply about their kids, and this is reflected in the attention and emphasis put on appropriate ability grouping -- the school works to make sure your child is in the most effective learning environment for their situation. The focus academically is on science and technology, yet the elementary school also has one of the best art teachers in the district and a strong core knowledge program that integrates math, science, and social studies across the curriculum. I recommend Flagstaff strongly and without reservation.

I have one kid here and one at another school, and being in that situation highlights the differences for me. Flagstaff treats the kids like people, meaning if the child needs a drink he gets one, if he needs a snack (which children often do!!) he gets to have one. Just like an adult would. Not so at the other school, it's more about teacher convenience there (I would love to see if there are snacks hidden in those teachers' desks). The kids at Flagstaff have a longer day than the non-charter, which means there's more time for subjects like science (GREAT program, by the way) and technology (also awesome!). This is the great strength of Flagstaff. I've seen the complaints by unhappy parents (below) but I think they would find the same changes taking place in any St. Vrain school due to the common core mandate, rather than a specific problem with Flagstaff. I would agree that I want more time to talk to the teachers than I get, though. That bothers me. And a better understanding of where my child stands with respect to where he should be. I dislike the feeling that the teachers are avoiding answering those questions.

There are so many problems at Flagstaff Academy. My biggest concern is the over emphasis on test scores. Each child takes 4 standardized tests per year! The math instruction is horrible. Kids are forced to watch a silly video for the first part of the lesson. Then they practice their test taking skills. They don't learn any math and end up confused. A+ students are now getting Ds and are hating school. Parents aren't allowed to talk to teachers so they just form tutoring groups among themselves. Also the administration is too weak to fix any of the problems.

I can't speak to politics. I don't get involved in that way. I do however, get extremely involved in ensuring my children get the best education possible.. I know at Flagstaff that I am welcome and encouraged to be there as much as my schedule will allow. I have put in 1500 - over 2000 volunteer hours in the last nine years. During that time I have observed skinned knees, tears of sadness and tears of joy. My three boys run the gambit from mischievous boy who cares more about socializing than homework, , to the shy genius, to an earnest hard worker that takes forever to finish his work because of his dyslexia and other challenges. All three have been treated fairly with attention to their individual needs whether typical, gifted, or quote "special". Two of my boys have moved on to HS and are doing exceedingly well. Last night they each received four academic awards. One of them is #1 in his class, and is sitting for 6 AP tests this month including Calculus and AP Physics Calc based. He will be considered for the full-ride Boettcher scholarship next year. None of that would be possible without the outstanding education and foundation received from Flagstaff Academy.

My children have been at this school for a few years now, and we can't imagine being anywhere else! They're excited to come to school every day. The teachers here take the time to develop relationships with their students, and the teachers are always responsive! It's fun to volunteer in the school, and it's the best way to see how warm and welcoming the staff is, and how excited the children are. What other school has a greenhouse, a science lab, a librarian that teaches research skills and how to navigate online databases for information? This school attracts the students of families in the high tech fields for a reason - it's an academically rigorous school that believes science and technology matter in our future. The best thing? Our school is so much more than 'how well do we take tests?' My children matter as whole individuals. I recommend this school to my friends all the time - there's just not a better school in the area. I'm constantly blown away by the projects they come home with, and all the things that goes on at the school.

I have had kids at Flagstaff since the first year. I currently have children in 8th, 6th, 3rd and 1st grade. My kids absolutely love this school. I know that while they are getting an excellent education they are also getting the best teachers in the area. Over the last 9 years we have always had wonder teachers who care about my children and their progress. I recommend this school to all surrounding areas. This school as been a blessing in so many ways. We are proud to be Dragons!!

My oldest child graduated from Flagstaff Academy last year and is currently a freshman at a highly-ranked high-school. She is taking AP and honors courses and is thriving due to the strong academic background received at Flagstaff. Her teachers have commented on the quality of her writing and have said that Flagstaff students are always prepared for the rigors of high school. As for the issues of Principal leadership, the school is definitely in a transition phase. Many of the other comments that question the quality of the leadership feel unfair (and a bit reactionary). With the rapid growth of the school and the added responsibilities of administrators in Charter Schools, the school has undertaken a nearly year-long search for both a new principal and the newly-created position of Executive Director. As a parent I feel as if this year of transition has gone about as well as it could while the school sought out the best people for these positions. Parent involvement is encouraged as much as ever. Teachers are quick to respond to e-mails and are willing to meet. Parents are encouraged to run for the board, speak at board meetings, volunteer in class and through the PTO.

Flagstaff is really going downhill....My husband wanted to send my kids to Twin Peak and I insisted on Flagstaff, I really regret my decision now, and I know alot of parents are feeling the same things that is why the Gala tickets are not doing well this year, as what I was told. Flagstaff is an amazing place for student learning. They provide a rigorous program that is not for everyone, but they treat every child like an individual. These teachers go above and beyond for kids every day. Even though the Board needs to learn how to be a board, the director and MS principal make this the kindest and safest school anywhere. This school is very forward looking and my kids are super prepared for high school and, I think, college. Great teachers, great leadership, great future - what a great school - good luck trying to get in! Everyone knows that Flagstaff is great so it is super hard to get into this amazing school.

I have to agree with the previous posts. My kids have been in Flagstaff for six years. In the last two years the school has taken a nose dive. The communication from the school is terrible. It seems the teachers are having a hard time with new math curriculum. All of my kids will be in tutoring this coming summer to catch them up to where they should be. The teachers are talented and passionate but they have their hands tied. They can only do what a bad curriculum allows them to do. My kids have not had a problem with bullying but I do know there is a lot going on and the victim of the bullying always becomes the bad guy. There is a group of rough kids that never get into trouble and they ruin it for the rest of their peers every year. My biggest concern is that the staff cares more about implementing silly dress code rules than what is going on between the students. My student was once called out of class by an aide who was walking by and noticed his jacket was out of dress code and made him take it off while the teacher was still instructing the class. It's very disappointing to give a review like this. I feel very let down and my children will not be returning next year.

I agree with the previous posters. Flagstaff Academy used to be one of the best schools in the area. The teachers were so creative and made learning fun. Since the school was taken over by a small group of arrogant parents, it has changed into an insane asylum for juvenile delinquent males addicted to video games. The girls are so stressed out by all the chaos. The staff is miserable and it shows. If you are a prospective parent, check out the playground at lunchtime. That should scare you enough to look for another school.

This school needs to get it's act togther, immediately! And Parent's WAKE UP! We once had this wonderful college prep schoool that has plummeted into gross negleance with this admistration. They do not care about the children's education at this school and are not willing to do one thing to get us back to the high standrads that we once had. My youngest child is not getting nearly the same eduation as the older sibling. Either you get your act together or I suggest you pull your kids from this school becuase they have no chance of reaching higher academic levels. Shame on you Flagstaff! The school is moving in a new direction. It was founded by parents who cared about academics above everything else. Back then, teachers were sent to conferences, where they were recognized for their innovative teaching styles. Today the school is triple the size. The classrooms are too large and disruptive. FA hires inexperienced teachers to save money and actively recruits autistic kids to make money, even though the stimulating environment is not appropriate for their needs. FA bought a new math program on the cheap and wrote their own writing curriculum. Now the school's math and writing scores are plummeting. The new math program is difficult to teach. Just one part-time teacher has been properly trained. The math curriculum is a year behInd and is full of gaps. It will be up to each individual teacher, most of whom are inexperienced, to make up these deficiencies if they want to. The extra money from classroom cuts has gone towards massive computer purchases, hiring friends, and promoting character development and restorative justice. Finally, the board behaves in an appalling way, making up rules, hiring friends, and generally behaving like everything is a joke.

Flagstaff has a policy that kids should not be doing more than an hour of homework per night. Although this might seem like a good idea, it doesn't work. If you aim at the average to below average student, then those who are above average spend 10 minutes on homework. This is not preparing above average students for honors/AP/IB programs. The special ed. department is horrific. It seems that the policy there is to get parents of special needs children to leave the school. Why did I rate them so high? Because despite that, the regular Ed. teachers are mostly above average and really put their heart into teaching. The curriculum is very rich and the knowledge of the world that my children have is incredible considering their ages. It is an above average education which is rich in technology and science and always very welcoming.

Flagstaff Academy is a great school which is maturing from a pioneer to an institution. Students and parents are actively involved in everything - classroom, extracurricular - and teachers and adminstrators pay close attention to test scores as the basis for performance measures. The review below which indicates that FA cares less about the welfare of the kids than test scores is unfair. Administrators are in the process of transitioning on a number of fronts and test scores are a measurement that is valuable. The school absolutely does not discourage parental involvement, that is the complete opposite of my experience. What I've experienced is my son learned how to read, has become much better at math than I have at this age, and has developed a group of close friends. If anything, the school attempts to communicate too much info, and solicit too much parental involvement. But I'd rather too much than too little. Our experience with Flagstaff has been excellent, and I hope if you are looking for an early education which is hands on, disciplined, involved then this would be an excellent school to consider for your child.

This school is a huge disappointment! I would think long and hard before enrolling in this school. Teachers are too young and inexperienced and admistration is lazy and discourages any sort of parent involement. Grades are slipping and the administration thinks being average is great. If you are alright with spening a fortune in tutoring your child on the side then go ahead.

Flagstaff Academy is falling behind from a few years back. The adminstration is more concerned with the testing scores than the welfare of the children. They discourage parent involment and there is a lack of communication. Too much pressure on the children!

Flagstaff provides a top-notch education. I had 2 kids transfer in last year. One was behind grade level, and the teacher & Intervention Specialist did amazing work encouraging her and help her meet realistic expectations. This year she is caught up and no longer on an ILP. Most importantly, her self-esteem has soared! Her teacher this year is absolutely wonderful, very cheerful & encouraging. I have been impressed by the principal Mr. Moore, the middle school staff, the middle school admin, Dr. Warren & Mr. Pugh. A good team all around. I have been especially pleased with how well trained the kids are in doing research projects, starting at the youngest grades. Honestly, I have been impressed with all the teaching staff that I have interacted with, which has been a lot of them!

I have a first grade student and a 7th grade student attending Flagstaff. This is our first year at the school and have been so very pleased with the school. The teachers, staff and leadership are all outstanding and truly go above and beyond. My 7th grader has struggled with math and reading for which we are finally seeing positive growth and results. Thank you Flagstaff!!!!

Moving our kids to this school has been the best decision we have made. The school culture is one of kindness and respect. The curriculum is excellent and the teachers are engaging. We love the amazing work our kids are doing at such a young age. I wish more children would have the opportunity to be exposed to this type of education. Thank you Flagstaff!

Disappointed! This year I have made a tremendous effort to drive my child all the way to this open enrollment school but my child has fell behind academically in language arts and in other areas. There are boys at the school who are emotionally disturbed and they harass the other children. This behavior is well tolerated by the teachers and leaders of the school. At one point my child was hit in the head by a sixth grade boy and when this was communicated to the assistant principal my child was told that that boy is 'angry today' as though that is a perfectly good reason to be have hit in the head. There aren't consequences and my child has experienced multiple bullying attacks. The communication within the school is unacceptable. The school doesn't welcome open communication and reprimands you for contacting them to report and discuss important safety issues. Maybe one problem is that the school is too large? and so they drop the ball. I would avoid St. Vrain School district If possible. They're hot lunches are terrible although that seems so minor in comparison to serious safety problems that are ignored at St. Vrain schools and this charter school is no exception.

I am one of the students from Flagstaff Academy and is currently an 8th grader. Even for just a student, I've experienced the school much longer and know it pretty well. These past (almost) 6 years, I came here, one year after the school opened. For me, I think if I were given a higher chance of rating scale (1-10) I would have given this school a 7.5 to 8/10. And here are some of the reasons why, First of all, not all the adults are bad. Yes, some were to the point where I despised them. However, ever since I arrived in Middle School (which was my first year at the new building) they have all left. Second, I've experienced all the principals. I do like the 3rd one better. Third, dress code isn't too good. First few years, no one really cared. Now in MS, it's a horror. Given write ups for the most small things or not given one at all, when you're wearing the most out of dress code things. Lastly, I can totally agree that the school jumps the curriculum way ahead. I am actually 1 year ahead of my math, 3 years head of my Spanish and is learning HS leveled L.A. They do give too much homework, but it's only because if you're going to take (IB) in HS, they want you to be ready.

I am a new to the school with a sixth grader. So far I really like it but more importantly my child really likes it. It seems that there are a lot of friendly children and so far haven't experienced any problems. My child has made a lot of friends and is challenged by the work but not stressed. Some highlights include Spanish class and Horticulture class. It was also an easy transition from a waldorf/art school for elementary. The only negative so far is driving everyday from Boulder but If you live in Longmont definitely worth checking out and open enrolling.

I have been a part of FCA since the first year it was open. Both of my children have had wonderful teachers, I do not question their class selection process. I do not have "gifted" students, but both are challenged at FCA. We have never had too much homework, if they don't get their work done in class then they bring it home. If students are making wise use of their time, they shouldn't have more than 30 min a night with the occasional extra projects. The teachers ask that the parents let their children do the work, if parents want a project they can have their own separate one. I have dealt with some discipline issues with my kids and felt they were handled appropriately. There are bullies everywhere, FCA tries to work with them to turn the behavior around. There have been three principals over the 6 years and all have dealt with things differently. Much has improved over time as with any business. FCA has it's share of "Sped kids" and although I don't have one of my own, I know several that are and are worked with as the District provides support for. I would recommend this or any charter school to any parent.

My children attended Flagstaff for two years until we relocated out of state. I realized once we left how truly unique and special a school it was that challenged my children to do their very best. We ended up relocating back two years later and I am so glad that they are back at Flagstaff and thriving in a creative, challenging, and fun environment. I would and do recommend this school to anyone looking for a school that challenges kids at all levels.

My two children attended Flagstaff Academy. One from grade 3-5 and the other grade 6 only. I got to experience all three principals at this school, including the founding principal, the second principal and the current principal, and found the current principal to be the best leader, although younger than the other two. The curriculum in content rich. The teachers are less well trained that SVVSD public school teachers, but usually do a good job. There is some politics and bullying but not tremendously worse than Longmont public schools. The music program in the middle school is not as focused on performance as the regular public middle schools. The middle school math curriculum pushes kids ahead too much, without considering what the local high schools offer for math. Still the content in art and music for elementary school is outstanding. There is a bit too much discipline and homework for some kids, especially K-2, but we were at a different school for those grades. There is some politics with board member children that tended to affect how discipline was enforced in the classroom.

A charter school is parent -run. That is the beauty of it. So if a couple of "pushy" parents join the school board and start demanding accelerated classes, ability grouping, STEM, and a balanced budget, than more power to them. I am so proud of the successes I have witnessed at this school. FA students are grade levels ahead in Math, Reading, Writing, Science and History. We certainly don't do their homework. What an insult to all of our children who work so hard. The Principal works long hours. He is smart, kind, and committed. The teachers are so dedicated to FA, they send their own kids there. The teachers and students appear happy. My children transferred from a private school 4 years ago. My perception was the private school principal favored wealthy parents. The private school held my children back. They had to work alone in workbooks, while the teacher taught to the lowest level in her class. This doesn't happen at Flagstaff, where they are grouped with other students at their level, even if it is a grade up. I genuinely believe the teachers and administrators care about our children. They do care when a child is bullied. The discipline policy is fairly enforced.

My 2 kids attended Flagstaff for 2 years. We moved to another state so we had to leave this wonderful school. My experience was very positive. Most of the teachers are wonderful, one of them was a bit inexperienced, but still pretty good. They have an excellent science focus and ability grouping across the entire grades for math and phonics. The teachers we had were very good, enthusiatic, motivated and caring. There was great parent involvement and there were parents volunteers every day in the classroom (And several of them!). The people at the front desk are friendly and have an amazing memory, they know the names of all the students (just amazing). Great communication from the principal through their website, email blasts, and lots of email from their teachers. Some of the teachers would email the parents mailing list every day with news about the classroom. The new school we are in is quite average, and now we realize how wonderful Flagstaff was. Kudos to Flagstaff and I hope they are able to maintain and improve on their already amazing performance.

The teachers are enthusiastic and love the kids. My kids are challenged and are doing well. What more could I ask for? Prior to Flagstaff they attended private school and they are now getting a superior education! All the teachers I have had contact with have never been anything other than courteous and professional. As for the school constantly losing pupils? Try telling that to several of my friends who are on the waiting list! Safety issues? I personally think the businesses are being unrealistic and have obviously never driven by any school at end of day! The 'Flagstaff kids' are no worse than other kids, they're kids!

This school really is amazing. The CORE knowledge curriculum is fantastic, and yes, the expectations are high for students, but the work put out by the students more than surpasses work I've seen at other schools. My child loves this school, the teachers, the atmosphere, the curriculum, the activities- it is a fun and enlightened place to learn, and I am sorry we wasted years at another high performing school in St Vrain Valley (Niwot Elem). FCA does have its share of bullies and bad behavior, as does any school, but the way it is handled is light years ahead of the previous school we attended and is absolutely not tolerated. There is no pressure, whatsoever, to contribute money or be a member of the board. The elitism spoken of in previous reviews is completely unfounded. You can volunteer as much or as little as you want with no reprecussions from any parent, staff member or board member. The thing about FCA is that people WANT to be involved- it is that kind of community. I highly recommend this school for an active and involved learner with a family who wants to be a part of a school community.

Look long & hard at this school. Ask questions about the anti-bullying policy. If your child is a special needs child, ask what services will be provided and what won't. Know what you're getting into & don't just buy into the bells and whistles of the school. Our daughter spent four years at FCA before we realized we were *never* going to get the support from the admin., the "special ed. dept.", or from the teachers, that we were initially (& every year after) told she was going to receive. In four years, social and academic progress were at a snail's pace & 1/2 of her teacher's were out of line & spoke to her with disrespect, bordering on contempt. (I wish we would've recognized it at the time). This school is probably okay if your child falls within FCA's "norms". If not, look elsewhere.

I am a parent of a student who attended Flagstaff for all three years of middle school and just finished the first semester at a St. Vrain high school in honors classes with a 4.0 average. I have to save the success in high school is despite the terrible 8th grade year (2009-2010) when the administration and others in charge appeared to be totally unbalanced. At Flagstaff in the 8th grade year my child was belittled, bullied, accused of ridiculous misbehaviors, excluded from many activities, received grades obviously lower than what others did for the same work and I was treated with rudeness and contempt when I tried to address these problems. Sad to say the same administration remains in effect at Flagstaff. I've been amused to read about the publicity stunt that was staged with parents supposedly camping out in the cold in December to make sure their students were able to enroll for next year when the reality is Flagstaff is spending money in ads in local papers this January begging parents to enroll their students.
