Both of my boys graduated from East Lyme High School within the last 3 years. They started out in preschool and then went to Lillie B Haynes, East Lyme Middle School, and finally East Lyme High School. They were always supported, they learned a great deal over the years socially, educationally, and they had a great time. Most importantly, they were always safe. The pandemic showed us how amazing the high school is and they never stopped advocating for our students. I will always speak highly of our EL educators, they helped us raise two amazing young men.

Bullying is routinely ignored. We reported it several times and our child continued to be harrassed by the same offender. When we mentioned it to our pediatrician she confirmed that she had several students who experienced poorly handled/ignored bullying. If your child is sporty and good at blending in then ELHS is probably fine. But it is a hostile environment for anyone who is gender non-conforming, neurodiverse or ethnically diverse. We moved to the area for the schools and are extremely disappointed by the hostile environment.

Certainly not a bad school. Definitely NOT a great one (unlike what people in town like to believe)! A grade of 6/10 or 7/10 is about right. Better than the utterly mediocre ELMS. Neighboring Old Lyme HS is better but other HS in the area are similar to ELHS or worse.
The district as a whole does not have a strong focus on high student performance or outcomes. But some families do. As a result, it is true that a small part of the student body is quite exceptional and some graduates go on to top colleges. But that outcome in many cases is despite EL schools not because of them! As a matter of fact, every year even National Merit Scholars and valedictorian-level ELHS students (ELHS does not report class rank, valedictorian, salutatorian etc) are not offered admission to any highly selective colleges despite exemplary records. At least ELHS does provide a large selection of AP classes.
Some teachers are indeed exceptional. Some are pretty bad. The administration does very little to support the former and reduce the numbers of the latter. All in all, a dual track school and district in terms of quality. Parents and students can and should take it upon themselves to do what they need outside of the school to really improve their situation. Best wishes that they achieve their dreams and goals!

I do not agree with the previous comment about not emphasizing math and science. Both my daughter and son graduated from ELHS and won scholarships to Purdue University where they studied Earth Science and Chemistry. My daughter's teachers adapted the math curriculum to fit her advanced knowledge resulting in her being awarded the Beering scholarship worth $250,000. I believe the students and parents are equally important in the quest for knowledge.

I think the school does not emphasis and promote the importance of science. The school does not encourge student to excell in math. That is why you hardly see any East Lyme graduates in top engeneer schools.
