Shocked by some of these poor reviews. I have never heard anything but glowing reviews of this school system. As a former student, this high school prepared me well for college/grad school and beyond. For such a small high school, there are a surprising number of extra curricular activities to get involved with- really something for everybody. I think its very telling that so many former students choose to move back to Lyme or old Lyme to have their own children attend this school.

I went to this school back in 2001-2005, so maybe things have changed since then, but when I was a student, the teachers were excellent. There were tons of clubs and extra curriculars with which to be involved. The music and theatre programs were excellent. I was involved in the school tv news program (WLYM) , the school newspaper (The Lyme Street Journal), cross country, creative writing, humanities, and multiple wind ensembles and orchestras. My siblings were involved with the excellent sports teams LOLHS has, including crew and soccer. I feel like this school prepared me for college incredibly well. I went back there as a substitute teacher between 2013-2016 and I found the school to still be excellent. They have high standards and passionate teachers.

Many college level classes, great special education, over 40 clubs, many sport scholarship programs, the teachers are extremely well liked and qualified, etc. 10/10 100% recommend!

I feel the equity gap is too large. My son is the only Hispanic/black child at the school, and we feel as if hes been pushed along. Smart kids succeed and the special need kids are slid along to graduate. I truly hope this is not the case and they truly care about the under privileged getting the same education and attention. We lived here for the schools, but cant wait to move once our son is done with high school. No diversity and very exclusive. Weve lived here for 5 years, participated in sports and activities, neither of us have established any friends. It is better to be here than where we were (Willimantic), granted, but he deserved better. I recommend trying for more diverse schools with mediocre ratings like in Hamden or East Rock New Haven for a more fair treatment of transfer/low income individual students. Its hard to find housing these days so we are stuck for now. Get to together Old Lyme, its embarrassing sometimes.

As a former student of this school with a good relationship with the teachers and administration I am disappointed and offended by the high standards they hold themselves to. After experiencing the real world I was shocked by the failure I was set up for by this school. Although the academics were good, I hold resentment in the lack of education on social issues as I had to learn the truth about them the hard way throughout college. This school is full of extreme hidden racism as I look back. The teachers are extremely discriminatory against students. The school has proven to handle mental health instances in an extremely inappropriate and offensive manor through enforcement, and continues to praise known sexual assaulters to this day. The administration overlooks the real issues of the school and targets specific students. To this day I am personally sickened by the persona this school puts on through PR, and their focus on gaining money through prioritizing out of town students who pay to attend. Things need to change, but the school will never recognize its extreme flaws.

Agree with the previous review 100 percent. Some good teachers who care. You could live here for 30 years and be kept at the margins by the sharp-elbowed locals. Definitely a 'we were here first' ethos prevails. While it's disconcerting for adults, it's profoundly difficult for children in the schools/community. Happy to be nearing the end of our stretch here. The locals made it a slog for our kids, who gamely made the best of it. Onward! If at all possible, take a pass on this burgh.

LOLHS is not as great as we had expected, especially as outsiders. We moved to the area as a military family, looking to settle down in a nice New England community with high quality schools. Naturally, we were attracted to Lyme-Old Lyme High School with its motto 'of private school experience in a public school setting.' The scores for the school likewise reflect great schools. However, our experience, and the experience of many other families that moved here from outside, has been similarly bad.

Lyme - Old Lyme is very small. This leads to great class sizes and teacher to student ratios (and a surprising number of clubs and athletic options) but it has all of the worst attributes of a small town in SPADES. Surprisingly, despite a very well educated and well traveled populace, it is very much a small town, very closed attitudes towards outsiders. Most kids have friends they've had since elementary school, and no interest in involving new kids in their friend group. This experience has been the case with multiple kids in our family, an exchange student we had, other military families, and non-military families that are new to the area. Our kids have been profoundly sad and lonely. The administration chooses to see these as isolated cases of kids with mental health issues rather than a systemic problem. The feeling of the town as a whole is similar, LOL's adult community is similarly closed, withdrawn, and not particularly friendly to outsiders. We have been here four years and feel like we would still be outsiders if we stayed for 40 more. Not a friendly place, would not recommend moving here . If your kid is very outgoing, exceptional at a sport like basketball, soccer or rowing, then they might be able to break in to a group of kids involved in a sport. Otherwise, your kids will be happier in a bigger more worldly school.
