The school does not have a welcoming and good educational environment. The interaction of the students is clique, which makes it hard for new students to assimilate. The teachers seem very interested in helping the students learn but there is an issue with the administrative staff. They will question your child and intimidate them so advise your child to have a parent present if questioned. The Staff appears to be enthusiastic for the school and students but below the surface we did not find a very caring place for our student to excel.

The school has a policy of searching backpacks without a well funded reasonable reason, hearsay is not good enough reason to do a search, in my opinion it violates a kids 4th amendment rights. They will also intimidate your child and question them without you being present which can be dangerous if they intimidate them to admit something they haven’t done.
If your kid goes there make sure you talk to them so they ask for a parent to be present to answer questions.
A lot of bad stuff goes around in this school (drugs, bullying, sexual harassment) and very little is done to the ones that really are getting this stuff into the school.

Many teachers at this school are terrible. They do not respond to email when a parent expresses concerns about homework, grades, etc. The school is run like a prison, kids are not allowed to laugh or talk (during discussions in the classrooms) and God forbid a child coughs or sneezes. "You're interrupting the class." One teacher my child has calls students names, throws objects and even leaves the premises when she's having one of her mental breakdowns, leaving the children unattended. I have reported this teacher more than once, yet she is still allowed to be abusive around students. I have never seen this behavior tolerated at any other school that my kids have attended.

PE 3X a week is not enough movement for 5th graders, whom are not allowed to run during “snack break.” My daughter has gained weight since moving here in the middle of the year due to no physical activity on some days. Paperwork for our children (504 plans, gifted paperwork, school physicals) has been misplaced more than once & the only teachers to return any email correspondence or phone calls are the band and chorus teachers. The 5th graders are not allowed to talk in the morning (there is a staff member literally screaming at them to “shut their mouths”) so my daughter, after nearly 3 months at this school, is miserable. Try to keep your kid in elementary school through at least 5th grade; this is not the place for young, creative & energetic kids.

Excellent school with very involved teachers who encourage academic growth in a supportive environment. Classes are still small enough 17-25, so teachers have the resources to challenge each student to best of their ability. Moved here from Alpharetta GA and sons are thriving.

My teachers refuse to individually give me assistance on work that I do not comprehend. Also they pressure us to not miss school even if we are sick. One teacher even refuses to help me catch up if I miss a day.

I go to Emerald Coast and the staff, students and atmosphere in general is terrible.

I am a student at ECMS. I am currently in the sixth grade and this is my 2nd year at the school. ECMS is the most amazing school. We have a great principal,great teachers, and helpful staff. The school also offers honors classes, an amazing band program, and many athletics. We also have a technology program and virtual classes that enable students to begin to earn high school credits while still in middle school. We have amazing school spirit and everyone comes together to support each other. I am the third child in my family to attend ECMS and we have all had the same great experience!

We moved here last year and ECMS has exceeded our expectations! Our 7th grader is getting a great education!! We were glad Honors classes are offered as well as Gifted. The teachers are very supportive and give great instructions to the students.

Emerald Coast Middle School Overall decent school but several issues here. Principal stays distant from parents, and my child found Mr. Marello to be rude quite often when no one else was around. Parent involvement here is better than most schools however. Some parents really great. The school has no lockers whatsoever and children must carry heavy backpacks and lunch bags around all day loooong! Also, what bothered me the most was the office staff, they are allowed to be rude on phone with no checks and balances. A number of times I had to call and was treated poorly on the phone. I found myself not wanting to call and would find ways around it... : ( The office is structured in a way that there are no other staff around her while she controls the front office and phones. And lastly, we found the school nurse to be very lazy, sits at her desk all the time, has a "couldn't care less" attitude towards going out of her way to be helpful to the students there. The teachers mostly really good here and while this is very important and key, all the other details add up and can make or break a good experience for a child that will spend possibly 3 years there.
