Crooked River Elementary School

I had two children who went here for Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grade. We loved this school. The teachers were very good about listening to the needs of the child and they did not send homework. My oldest first year he struggled with the transition and with my husbands deployments. They set him up with the military counselor and did special lunches for the military children. They also handled the school year during the Pandemic wonderfully. The only complaint I have about the school is lunch. I feel like lunch should be the children's break and they should be able to relax some. However, they're made to be very quiet and only allowed to talk to the person next to them.

The school district, in my opinion, could use longer recess. It is only twenty minutes even for Kindergarten.

4 out 5 of my kids have gone to this school...two of them straight A students the other 2 with A & B grades...teachers are always willing to help, encourage and challenge your child to strive...my opinion...this is one of the best schools in town!!

I've known others with children that required extra support in their education due to difficulties, but in our own case it did not seem very effective. It seemed communication between us and staff just was not clear, and that some staff involved weren't thoroughly listening to concerns.

As stated in my original comment, the school seems a bit disorganized and it did not follow its own policies.

I somewhat agree with this. In general, students seemed to be mild mannered and respectful of their school. I don't know that I would say the school itself is the reason. I would give the credit to some of the staff instead.

We experienced both great and not so great teachers. Our son's first teacher was great with him, patient. His second teacher seemed to have little patience or humor for young children and we felt he was essentially punished for being a child. He also had a tutor for extra help in a subject he seemed to be struggling with who was also patient and understanding and genuinely wanted to help him. Turned out our child actually understood the material and would just get bored or sometimes overwhelmed at the amount of work given to him and just stop working.

Typically, homework consisted of worksheets similar or practically the same as the ones they did first thing in the morning in class. Often times, when helping our child understand the directions we would find spelling and grammar errors, or the information was misprinted. I recall a worksheet that instructed the student to write numbers in given boxes, skip counting from one preprinted number to an end preprinted number, yet the skip counting wasn't logical for the numbers given. How do you teach children properly when the information provided isn't even written properly?

Came to the area just before oldest started 1st grade. His 1st grade teacher was very patient with him. She was fantastic. We weren't really thrilled with the school as a whole though. They do not have any art or music classes (though they have a music room full of instruments collecting dust), so that was rather disappointing to us. Our son progressively became less and less interested in going to school. One week into second grade and he started whining that he didn't want to go to school. My husband volunteered at the school occasionally and said it was rather discouraging. The children were yelled at constantly for chatting in the lunch room. Lunch is only about 15 minutes long, and recess was also rather short. When our son missed a few days due to illness, he spent at least the next week of recess sitting on the side of the playground catching up on worksheets he had missed. The place also seemed disorganized and failed to follow their own policies on multiple occasions. More than once when I went to pick up my child, he was nowhere to be found because he was sent to the wrong place (pick up line versus walk/bike path) which amazed me because their own policy was that staff HAD to go by the directions given to the office by the parents. There would be times I would drop him off in the car line in the morning, and for whatever reason they deemed he was also to be picked up in the carline even though we would always walk in the afternoons. Hearing opinions from other parents (before letting them know our own), the general opinion was that the student body had little morale and the leadership was poor. I'll admit, there were some staff members that we quite liked, who were friendly to everyone we saw them come in contact with, and helpful with students. Giving TWO stars rather than one simply for the sake of those star staff members who take their roles as they should.

My child went to kindergarten here, he loved the school. The teachers were very kind. Its one of the best schools in the district.

Great little school with nice staff. My son is in Kindergarten and loves his teacher. She calls and emails about his progress and welcomes my input. I've never been ask to get involved much with the school, so i don't other then that, i love this school.

My girls have been going to this school for 3 years and this past year has been the worst. The school is very unorganized. Teachers show favoritism and hold grudges towards students. After some very unprofessional and inappropriate comments made by a teacher, my daughter came home afraid to go back to school. Several parents made complaints and the principle did nothing to the teacher, not even time off while doing an "investigation". I don't think it was even reported to the school board until my wife called them. If a child had made the same comment, he/she would have been suspended no questions asked. Child pick-up on rainy days can be very confusing as it is left to the individual teachers to make the decision if they will ride or walk home instead of the school making best decision for all students. We have found MANY other parents that are very unhappy with this school and are moving their kids somewhere else. I think we will be doing the same!

We have attended Crooked River Elementary for 1 full year, with children in different grades. There is little to no homework assigned and very few projects. The combination of Silent Lunch, Silent Hallways, and time taken from the one 15 minute recess/day dicipline strategy showes little respect for the student body. The philosophy of disciplining the entire lunch room/class to improve the behavior of a specific student has proved itself unaffective, though it continues to be practiced at CRES. The sour faces and lack of love for children appears to be norm rather than the exception. The PTO colapsed a while back and a 2nd attempt is being made to get it started again this year. Frustration among the parents is high, few have found areas that welcome parent volunteers. It is hard to believe that the generous military community next to the school is constantly is shut out.

We moved here in April of 2007 as a military family. My oldest was in 1st and my daughter in kindergarten. They adjsuted very well with the help of the teachers for the last 4 weeks of school. The following year they thrived and achieved straight A's all year round. The teachers are willing to communicate and listen and help. My children both had Mrs. Klein for 2nd and 3rd grades (she moved up to teacher 3rd) and she is by far the most wonderful teacher we have had :) We are preparing to move to San Diego and I am going to miss this school terribly. The only downside is if you live in base housing there are no buses. All children are biker/walkers/car riders and it gets very hectic on rainy days/cold winter days trying to get them from school.
