Being a military family, we have been to several schools, including Mascoutah, 5 miles away. When we came back to this area, we specifically chose Wesclin due to its smaller size (approx 100 students per class). Too much drama in bigger schools! The academics here have prepared my kids for college, and the staff and students were very welcoming. These are small towns with many families in farming, and the community is great. The new school is awesome. All the teachers have taken an interest in my kids succeeding and have shown flexibility when needed. I personally like that there are no AP classes here, they are overrated. Instead they have several dual credit classes that actually transferred 100% to my daughter's college. I highly recommend this high school.

90% of the teachers are wonderful & caring. Others there for the paycheck. The principal is a dictator & will not change his mind about anything once he's made his decision even if it goes against the handbook. The biggest problems at Wesclin are bullying, cliques & drugs. If you are new, you won't fit in unless you play football, are a cheerleader or on the dance team. A new school was built & opened this year. The focus of the school is apparent; the gym is huge; classrooms are not. The cafetorium is used as a cafeteria/auditorium & is not large enough for either. When plays or concerts are held, tall rails block the view of the stage. The "media center" (aka library) is in the middle of the school and the students are not allowed to pass through it to get to their classes, forcing them to walk all the way around and often making them late for classes. There are little extra curricular activities except for sports. It's mainly football, basketball & baseball/softball. There is a Math team and scholar bowl team. Education is good, but otherwise, am not overly happy with this school. They are far too worried about the students excelling in sports over academics.

I continue to be disappointed by the by how every little thing has to be run by the principal from class schedule changes to taking a class at a local college. Instead of letting the staff do their job, many things are micromanaged. That is why we have a counselor who is wonderful to work with. When school leadership is disrespectful to students and parents, people start searching for other schools.
