Morris Jeff Community School is well worth looking into for your little one(s). They have an exponential staff in all areas, but especially the director of special education, Charlotte and her entire department. Teachers are incredibly kind.

My son had a bad experience with another student calling him a racial slur. The school handled this situation VERY POORLY. No one reached out far as the head of school, the 3rd-5th grade principal, or disciplinary director. I showed up to the school unannounced TWICE just for something to be done. I also involved the school board because I felt the situation was being swept under the rug. I would write more about this incident but I know they'll remove my comment.

My student did not do well in online private school during the 2020-2021 SY. As a result, I had them repeat the 9th grade and enroll at MJHS. While my child does have health issues, academics have never been a problem before last year. Since starting at Morris Jeff, my kiddo is thriving. The teachers have been very responsive and my kid, who became school resistant, likes school again. I have no experience with Morris Jeff below the high school level, so I can't speak to the elementary school. However, I can say that the high school has been very supportive and my child has been very successful there.

The leadership at this school is awful. Special needs and low income students do not receive the attention and care that they desperately need. They pride themselves on diversity, but bullying and division among the students is the worst I've ever seen. I'm so sad to have to send my daughter back next year. I can't afford private school and Morris Jeff is the only charter school she got into. We will keep trying, though. The school is run by a very select group of parents who the principal allows to walk all over her. Honestly, I'm not even sure what the principal does all day. She certainly does not make decisions. Through virtual learning, I overheard the band teacher screaming at a child with autism for not paying attention, and a 12 year old child throw a very concerning outburst and then was laughed at by other students and ignored by the teacher. That particular student was actually in the classroom when this happened, as they were on a hybrid schedule. So half the class was in person and the other half at home while alternating days between each half. The IB curriculum is a joke. The students are not bilingual as the school would have you believe. Test scores are awful. The only reason I can think of for this school to still be allowed to operate is that a lot of the parents are NOLA transplants with money. It's basically gentrification within the education system run by people who have no understanding of our city and our culture. So many parents on the Facebook group are so inappropriate. I've seen mothers chastise other mothers for not walking their kids to class or for not participating in meetings. It's like they have no concept of single mothers, low income households, and privilege. I would not recommend this school to anyone. Just don't. I can't even with this place. No.

This School is terribly mismanaged and fails to help the very students it prides itself on supporting. despite its stance on acceptance and community, the students couldn't be more divided and the facility makes no effort to make a genuine change. Many kids have been bullied out of the school and the teachers and principal seem too care little for the deeper issues regarding students wellbeing. Punishments seem outdated and unnecessary, such as the 'in school suspension' method which forces kids to sit in a room for the entire day without any engagement or proper protocol for solving their issues in the first place. The principal seems completely unwilling to make proper changes for the schools wellbeing and undermines the students concerns. For an IB school we expected so much more care and effort, please do not enroll your child here they deserve better.

Our experience thus far has been wonderful. The school is full of incredible teachers that take a sincere interest in the well-being and education of our children. The school is fortunate to have such a mission-oriented leader and caring parents. Our kids thrive in this environment and we're overjoyed that we chose MJCS.

Students run the school - discipline problems run rampant and teachers aren't able to teach, kids aren't able to learn. "Inclusion" is their word for taking state funds for SPED students and throwing them in the classroom with little to no support. Despite the appearance of teaching social/emotional skills and encouraging students to become "citizens of the world", disrespect and bullying are huge problems. Although they are more than aware, administration does nothing about this, likely because they are more concerned with growing the high school. With such a weak foundation, I can't see the high school doing well. I would not send my children to either, and would discourage anyone I care about from sending their kids here.

Terrible! Lots of bullying. My kid is called gay , racist, ugly etc. the school does nothing. For such a school to say how open they are, what they say and do are two different matters. Education is horrible and honestly I think the principle is the worst.

The teachers focus on only one set of kids in a classroom,they do not know how to deal with older children,and the students are often just ignored. The teachers instead of trying to actually help the student just use punishment.

The school punishes people for the tiniest things and does nothing to actually hear the students input. The teachers are bias and target the black children.

MJCS is fantastic! The IB curriculum provides an enriched learning environment for our children (5th grade, K). We sought a school that was diverse - racially, economically, philosophically --- and, MJCS is ideal. Our children are thriving. The school has a strong principal with an eye for talent in teaching, a board that has a grasp of financial management, and a commitment to being an excellent open access school. It has inspired our 5th grader to write her first novel --- I am well pleased.

Morris Jeff is a Great school in the New Orleans area. Both of my children have attended since 2010 and have learned so much more than what they were learning at their previous school. There is a news letter sent home weekly with the kids and also emailed along with a work plan of what they will be learning throughout the week and what their homework consist of. Not only are their taught ELA, vocabulary and Mathematics, but other subjects include science, social studies(history and Louisiana history), writing(yes they do reports) Spanish, art, music and their IB unit. I'm very impressed how elementary school has changed in the 20 years that I attended.

My daughter is in her second year at Morris Jeff and while I've been happy with the school so far, I haven't been completely ecstatic about it. The teachers are fantastic, but leadership is definitely lacking. I like the IB curriculum aspect, the immersion program, and the diversity. Also, my daughter is very happy at this school, which is what has kept me from looking elsewhere. Communication is a problem. There are report card/progress conferences (as previously noted by another poster)...............twice a year. The website is terrible. It's full of old pictures and old information and is not exactly up to 2014 standards, in my opinion. The Facebook page is random. Other posters complained about discipline and rowdy kids. I have never found this to be a problem. They are children after all, and surely they can't possibly believe that the discipline problems compare at all to other public schools in Orleans Parish. The school is pretty much run by a group of parents, who are unqualified and not open to suggestions. (If you need proof of this, attend the spring fair.) Morris Jeff overall is a good school. The teachers are excellent. The administrative staff needs an overhaul.

I think that the truth is that both of the last posts are correct. I seldom have any communication from the school and there is nothing online to quickly check my child's grades. I like my child's teacher but the kids are kind of wild and undisciplined. The parents run the school and seem to be the ones that get anything done. Simple things like getting a lunch menu is way too difficult!!! It has many good points,too. They are very friendly and they will address problems if you make the request. It is no where close to perfect but it is a decent place.

I am very confused by the previous post. Every assertion is contrary to what we have experienced with Morris Jeff (my son is in his third year). Especially strange is the assertion that [r]egular parent/administration communication efforts are little to none regarding the progress of each child and what they are actually learning (or not learning) in class. It is a fact that there are regular parent-teacher conferences (we parents cook for the teachers and host an appreciation luncheon for them on conference days), along with regular report cards and daily updates that go home in folders. We also receive a weekly newsletter describing what the children are learning in each area of study and a homework packet for the week. When I email questions about an assignment, my son s teacher gets right back to me. As for the principal s responsiveness, I have contacted Ms. Perkins twice with concerns and received prompt, engaged, and appropriate responses. And really, the vibrant IB curriculum is stagnant ? The discrepancies between the previous post and reality lead me to conclude that the poster is a troll. What s the point in bad-mouthing a school you have no connection with?

My children attended this school for two years and I was more than disappointed. The teachers are not given the support that they need to handle the disciplinary problems in the classroom and support the special needs children that they are not qualified to care for. The principal turns a blind eye toward issues that need to be addressed and advanced children are not challenged and I watched my own children regress in this stagnant environment. Regular parent/administration communication efforts are little to none regarding the progress of each child and what they are actually learning (or not learning) in class. Now my children are attending better schools and I see a night and day difference in their achievements, levels of self esteem, etc. I would not recommend this school to someone who is active and interested in their child's educational advancement.

I am so impressed by this school. My son has mild autism, with speech and language impairment, and I was searching for a free, public school that would cater to his academic and social needs, have some diversity in race and socioeconomic class, and encourage family support. He has done so well here, and loves going to school everyday. His teachers, the special education director, and the principal are all so personable and willing to answer whatever questions and concerns you may have. This school was literally an answer to my prayers.

I love this school. This is my dream school for my children. I wanted them in a public school that was diverse in all aspects of race, socioeconomic status and abilities/disabilities. I wanted them in a school that reflected real life. This school is like a family and is a true community school. The teachers and administration are incredible. Parent's have a voice and the school community is very warm and inviting. My kids are very happy here. The afterschool Explorers program is a bonus for me since they need to stay in aftercare. There they get even more art, spanish, music, dance and enrichments. They never want to go home! The curriculum is rich in critical thinking and is challanging, yet fun for the kids. This school is a gem for New Orleans.

I am so pleased with most everything about this school. The teachers are supportive, creative, and tireless...the principal is a true leader, very present and very engaged. The curriculum is challenging and interesting. I love that everyone involved is always working hard not simply to be a great school, but the best school it can be for that community of students at that particular time--no resting on laurels here! The diversity, reflective of the city as a whole, makes for a vibrant and living, ever-evolving environment. There are so many opportunities for parental involvement, too, even for an incredibly busy single parent. I feel so lucky that my child here, I don't think I could ask for a better school.
