unorganized, rookie teachers and no progress towards improving the shortcomings

We've had a wonderful experience here. The teachers are engaging and my kids enjoy going to school. (Win!) The curriculum is thoughtful and teaches the students to understand concepts not just memorize facts. We and our kids have been very happy and feel very lucky to be a part of bricolage community.

This is really a tale of two schools. Bricolage began as a wonderful concept that taught kids how to think and interact with the world. The founder created a school that focused on academic excellence for the whole community, not just for kids whose parents work the system to get into the elite charters. However, once he left a couple of years ago, the new leadership decided to focus on social justice and equity with an anti-racist CRT inspired curriculum that is light on true academics but heavy on politics and feelings.
They have exceptionally high teacher turnover. I believe it is because the administration ties the hands of the few good teachers and makes them focus on the ridiculous curriculum they have chosen. The teachers that remain seem to be the ones that best toe the line.
Math: heavily focused on drawing pictures and showing large amounts of work in order to get simple answers. Actively discouraged the memorization of the multiplication table and demanded the kids solve 5x5 by writing out 5+5+5+5+5 or drawing 25 boxes and counting them.
Spelling and Grammar not focused on at all. Social Studies promoted left leaning concepts and politicians. Projects limited research sources to only approved readings that were all slanted in one direction and basically coached the kids to regurgitate trendy activist talking points.
If your kid shows exceptional talent, they will be ignored as the teachers do constant review for less capable students. If they need to be tested for special Ed, good luck. We waited 2 years.
Bottom line is that Bricolage is no longer a top tier school in the city. Our kids both got As in everything but after we moved out of state, our fears about how far behind they were compared to their peers attending real schools were confirmed. The sad part is that most of the parents have no idea how poorly their kids are being served.
