Our kids absolutely love attending the Waldorf School of Lexington!

The teachers and staff create such a thoughtful and attentive environment. Our children come home genuinely excited about their day, feeling safe and connected. The Waldorf philosophy, especially the focus on hands-on learning and screen-free experiences, is something we loveit allows our kids to stay grounded in the real world.

This school feels like a community that really gets it when it comes to education and community. We couldnt be happier with how it encourages both intellectual and emotional growth in a warm, supportive atmosphere.

The Waldorf School of Lexington is a well established, academically rigorous, nature-based, arts-infused school that nurtures children's innate curiosity, wonder and joy. The faculty are highly skilled and devoted to helping every child discover their unique gifts. Teachers model empathy, community-mindedness and integrity in all tasks. The humanities, foreign languages & math programs are excellent, evolving in alignment with children's cognitive development. The school offers a particularly impressive music program with unparalleled orchestral and choral opportunities. Perhaps most importantly: children ENJOY learning at WSL. They are allowed to move, to play, to engage with nature, to "think outside the box"; they don't sit tediously completing worksheets and standardized tests or simply regurgitate facts. Waldorf offers a dynamic, vibrant, and engaging educational experience to all. I have appreciated raising my children in a school that is screen-free, especially in the younger grades, and within a community that is very intentional and discerning about media consumption. While not for everyone, Waldorf education has been a tremendous gift for my family. Students at WSL learn how to problem-solve, to collaborate, to communicate effectively. They become resilient, well-rounded, compassionate citizens of the world because of this amazing education. I cannot recommend WSL highly enough!!

We've been with Waldorf for a little over a year now and couldn't be any happier. We love the philosophy and the caring approach towards each child. My daughter was coming off a public school system that lacked in support. WSL provides everything my child needs... from physical activities to mental challenges. I absolutely love this school and highly recommend it!

Waldorf teachers have chosen to teach here and consider it a calling. They are deeply committed to the children, the educational philosophy, and the Waldorf movement as an antidote to the many ills in our current societal climate.

Over and over again, alumni are complimented for their excellent character wherever they go in the world. A Waldorf education weaves character education into everything it does, beginning in Mommy-Tot classes when the children are just babies. My own children stand apart in group sitations outside of school (ie sports teams) for their strong character, compassion, and respect for others. In fact, my son was awarded an award for this very thing as a Freshman on his youth hockey team out of the entire team. This integrity was built by his Waldorf education.

The Director has over 40 years experience in other independent schools and brings a great balance of leadership, collaboration, and deep listening to his role as Head of School. In addition, the governing structure is unique in that the Trustees, Directors and Teachers work together to govern the school. There is a very active Parent Community Association, as well, which contribute to the school's leadership.

The Waldorf School of Lexington respects and honors students with a variety of learning differences. This is actually the beauty of the education. The children learn to appreciate what each peer brings to the classroom. The school cannot, however, accommodate severe learning disabilities, but does work with each family to provide accommodations inside and outside of the classroom when it can.

The Waldorf School of Lexington has an excellent bullying prevention policy, as well as a gender diversity policy. The school handles bullying in an effective way when it occurs.

In Waldorf schools, homework does not usually begin until around grade four, which is terrific, because when they go home, they can rest and absorb what they learned in school. As a result, the children are free to be kids after school and do not experience any of the normal pressures or stresses found in public and other private school environments who have a lot of homework and tests.

Outstanding! My children have had a Waldorf education since they were toddlers. They are now teenagers and have grown into amazing human beings who care about others and the world. I have two masters degrees in education and have worked in education for over 25 years. Waldorf education is the ONLY education I would give my children. My only wish is that every public school in America was a Waldorf school. Everyone should have the opportunity to know about and experience Waldorf.

Excellent. This is a school that educates for life, not for a test. Our kids are in 8th and 6th grade and doing great. Alumni of this school all come back to stress how well and grateful they are to had a chance to stay at Waldorf . The faculty is well prepared, care for kids. Communications with families is improving and the staff is new and enthusiastic. Looking at private high schools, all teachers love to receive Waldorf students: they are interested, enthusiastic, know how to talk,..., in the long run this is what they are looking for.

If you have any doubts about the WSL or Waldorf education, rest assured, this is an amazing school with an incredible curriculum and forward-looking approach to education. My husband and I believe Waldorf education, and the teaching methodologies it uses, is the future of education, particularly early-childhood and elementary education.

All the teachers we have met in this school are warm, engaging and outstanding in every way. Our child is happy to go to school in the mornings and calm and relaxed when he comes home in the afternoon. We have developed friendships with other parents (and even some of the staff) that go beyond attending birthday parties and school events. My husband used to dread going to PTA meetings and events at our son's previous school - which was a highly ranked public school. Now he is the one who sends me reminders about school events at WSL and loves socializing with other parents. You will find a lot of academically and artistically inclined parents in this school who are grounded and socially engaged. This has been an emotionally rewarding journey for our entire family so far and we look forward to many more years of learning and fun.

This school feels magical and a long awaited haven from the public school rat race. The teachers are warm, dedicated and gifted in what they do. Most of them. However the administration is draconian, inaccessible and disrespectful. Don't expect communication from anyone if you have concerns about your child. They have no interest in a holistic approach to families - i.e. sibling preference for classes - which creates an extremely awkward situation for numerous longstanding families. They have no endowment, and little ability to manage money. The administration does not support the teaching staff, particularly with classes that have children who may have special needs. The state of the school under the current leadership - and particularly the director, who stays locked in a room unseen - is tenuous at best, particularly in the greater Boston area. Waldorf philosophy yes. Waldorf of Lexington, a big disappointing no.

I always envisioned my children attending our neighborhood public school. That was until I discovered the Waldorf School of Lexington, an Independent school 20 minutes from our home. The Waldorf School is unlike any other school my husband and I have known. Our children will attend this school from Pre-school through 8th Grade. What speaks to us at this school is the underlying philosophy of developing a child's "heart, hands and head". Our children are blessed to be attending a school where experiencing nature is paramount to a child's healthy development. In addition, there is an emphasis on weaving art and music through the curriculum. The uniqueness of this school never ceases to amaze us.

As a parent of two children at this school, my experience of it is very different from the review of May 28, 2011. I have found this school to be less driven by business/finance than others, very willing to work with families who are committed to the ideals they work toward. Kindergarten is run as it was originally designed back when that word was invented: to play and to learn through play. Academics do not start until first grade, when ABC's are learned in a most beautiful and memorable way (not second grade, as the reviewer states). If you want an academic kindergarten then don't go here. But if you want developmentally-appropriate learning, then this is the place. My oldest is about to graduate 8th grade after being here since the parent-tot program. She arrived a shy introverted child and while she has retained the beauty of who she is she is also able to stand up on stage and speak, sing, and play music. She has learned to observe and think for herself rather than becoming a bucket full of facts. She has had the opportunity to develop skills in many areas, and thus has balance in her life. The opportunities here wonderful.

It is like any other private school doing business (the business people are pretty hard-nosed, if I may add) sugar-coated with their "philosophy"...you may be taken by the their presentation skills but don't expect to learn ABCs until 2nd grade or so.. and the kindergarten teacher told me that the school discourages teaching at home...and the children have counting "in them" and they learn to count on their own without anyone teaching them... . . huh!
