So, the school year in 2022-2023 wasnt that bad except when ou will have THE MOST FAKEST FRIENDS and then have the most ridiculous math teacher. I forgot his name but he would just act like nothings going on just say 2 girls are arguing he would just say "Go outside or stop OR ignore it" But for the 8th graders at the school lock in

I was recently going into middle school and I chose to move into Bowie. At first sight, the middle school doesnt look great, but when you go inside, its another perspective. Everything is clean, everyone is happy with their friends and else. I have never seen a fight, well, at least once, but in the bathrooms there is no one fighting or smoking. I give safety 5/5. The teachers are very interactive with their students and they care about their students and seek for athletic teams so they can help them get into them. My learning there was awesome and it was one of the most easy-adapting processes Ive had in my school career.

I would not reccomended this school to anyone unless youre trying to get negative phone calls home every other day. Go to tasker instead. This school has gone DOWNHILL.

Principal is generally a good man and I haven't had any issues with the staff. The problem with the school is the school populace. In less than a year and my son was called a racist just because of the color of his skin and ostracized in the school. We're probably moving We're probably moving

I would rate this school a 4 out of 5. The principal at the school seems to struggle in her role. My son never had any issues and was accepted at the top DC area private school as well as the highly competitive Roosevelt Scienc e and Tech program for high school.

This school does the opposite. It ignored poor behaviors such as dishonesty and bullying and is run like a prison. Whenever I would come to the school during lunchtime, I would feel awful as I listened to the children be berated and belittled via an adult on the microphone during lunch. When infractions occured, teachers would pretend not to have noticed so they did not have to give statements. If they didn't see it, it didnt happen. I believe the arts are an integral part of character development and the arts teachers were wonderful! They were a shining light in the darkness for my children.

The principal is a coward who refused to meet with us on multiple occasions. The person in charge of grade-specific discipline tried to heavily penalize our child for a small infraction. Thank God we read the parental rights handbook that was given to us. The guidance counselor was not a warm and friendly person and was often very defensive.
Posted: June 22, 2018
I am neutral here only because the exceptional needs coordinator, Melissa Blodgett was absolutely fantastic. She truly understands that each child is unique and was able to help my chidlren suceede in a hostile, unwelcoming environment.
Posted: June 22, 2018
While they put a lot of talk in to dealing with bullying, there is definately an "if i didnt see it, it didnt happen" mentality and the student body knew it. Bullying often occured between classroom changes and in the lunchroom. We had to do a lot of damage control with our chidlren and teach them to deal with bullies, becsue sometimes even the techers would bully or publicly humiliate. When a child was found to have bullied, it was dealt with. But it needed to be very obvious to be caught.

Awful! The damage this school did to my children's psyche should be unlawful! While there are small pockets of wonderful teachers, the bad ones are very, very bad and the school seems not to care. If I had it to do over, I would have paid whatever it cost to send them to a private school or move to another school. The only thing this school seems interested in is churning out mindless followers. There were times I did not feel my children were safe at this school.
Posted: June 22, 2018
If your child does not fit the mold, it is difficult to get assistance with homework turn in. Even IF they have an IEP.
Posted: June 22, 2018
Some of the teachers are amazing. Most are mediocre at best. I had to have a meeting with a teacher to explain why yelling at my child was not effective or appropriate. If your child is not the sit down, shut up and do your work type, they become targets for the teachers.

School needs some improvements., but besides that is a good school. Teachers are good.
Posted: March 14, 2018
As I mentioned before, some kids are hard to deal with. As a parent, these values should be taught are home. School should only reinforce them, not raise our kids.

Yes, the school has an effective approach to homework. My daughter has homework everyday.

Teachers ate great. I think the only issue is there are some kids that needs some discipline at home. I volunteered once and let me tell...God bless the teachers because some students are not easy.
Posted: March 14, 2018
My experience with Samuel Ogle is good. As I mentioned before, there are some kids that are out of control and needs some discipline, which in my opinion should be taught at home and the school job is only to reinforce theses values.
Posted: March 12, 2018
The homework load is not bad. I think the school is good, but needs more parents to get involved.

There are a handful of great teachers and a handful of bad ones. Most are average.
Posted: February 22, 2018
There is no moral support system for students. They are there to learn and no one is teaching them to be model students.
Posted: February 22, 2018
The principal and administration are rude and uninvolved.
Posted: February 22, 2018
The students with disabilities are shuffled out of sight and completely isolated from the rest of the school.
Posted: February 22, 2018
The school administration preaches on and on about how anti bullying and harassment they are but do nothing when actual accounts are reported. When i was a student there, me and several other girls were harassed for several months by the same boy only for the administration to deny that anything had happened, despite numerous reports. We got in trouble for being mean and excluding the boy who constantly made us uncomfortable and touched us, because the principal did not feel like dealing with the situation!
Posted: February 22, 2018
The school is not the worst but it also isnt the best. Academics are average but the leadership is awful. The administration does not want to deal with any problems and ignores the students entirely. The principal is downright lazy and cruel.
Posted: January 26, 2018
The first year, it was pretty okay. The second was the worst. I learned nothing because 97% of the students, most of whom were black, were out of control. Not only that, but I also got bullied because of my race (I'm white). I remember the teachers having to scream to get the student's attention. But even then, the students ignored them. My Dad came in one day to sit in, and even with a visitor, they were still horrible. I went there for 6th and 7th grade. I'm in highschool now, and I couldn't be happier to be out of this horrible, out of control school. The most I'd rate it is a one, because admittedly, they do have some pretty great teachers. (Now, if only they could get the students to behave, so they could ACTUALLY teach)

As one reviewer stated, SOMS is 'above the P.G. average.' Unfortunately, that's not saying very much... There were some great teachers at Samuel Ogle, but their classes are too large to tend much to struggling students. As another reviewer pointed out, there were also a small number of teachers who seemed lazy or unmotivated. There have been a few good folks in the administration but they often follow promotions to other schools. Two years ago, every student joked about the acting principal's prominent bicep tatoos of her two ex-husbands. Nothing against tatoos, divorce or sleeveless attire, but the skeptical jokes undermined the dignity of the principals position. PGCPS and SOMS are dumbfounded about how to deal with cellphones and other communication devices, so they just ignore the issue (like so many parents, too), and the clever kids potty talk quickly evolves into bullying, sexting and other inappropriate activities. High school boys enter the school to hit on the gullible middle school girls, and gang recruitment begins here in middle school, believe it or not, though PGCPS, Bowie PD and the school vehemently deny that it's "a problem." But it may become your problem at SOMS. Good luck!

This is our first year at SOMS and honestly, I am not impressed. Overall the teachers are lazy and unresponsive. (We have had two outstanding teachers this year) The rest never give written homework and appear to have little control of their classrooms.
